this video is brought to you by manscape.com recently i bought a chunky windows xp laptop off of ebay and the box has finally arrived and yeah for some reason it's uh wrapped in cling wrap of all things as well and it's a bit rattly inside so i think it's time we open it up and see whether it survived the journey on closer inspection the outside is not covered with cling wrap like you'd find in the kitchen but packing wrap that you'd normally see on large pallets it's a good thing it was added as there wasn't much tape holding the box closed and inside is the laptop protected with well basically nothing this should be wrapped in a layer of bubble wrap to cushion it at the very least the power cable also has a us plug end no big deal as i've got heaps of other ones the original charger looks to be intact and then we've got the chunky hp laptop itself this is the zv5000 released sometime in 2004. oh the ebay selling absolutely didn't mention that the hinge was broken so i messaged the seller asking for a partial refund i assume the hinge was damaged due to the poor packaging i then looked at the papers inside the handwritten note mentioned the hinge being loose and that you could simply prop it up on a bench a pro tip mention the damage in the listing not after the fact in the package and thankfully the seller did agree to a 25 refund at the very least there was also a windows xp instruction booklet and some of the original documentation and after turning the laptop on we can see it's running windows xp as advertised the seller left the password written down and it doesn't appear as if they reset anything a pro tip always delete your passports personal medical records family photos and resumes before selling your computer this was a laptop designed for multimedia consumption the 15.4 inch 1280x800 high def widescreen display was pretty great 18 years ago 30 percent more information 22 larger picture when viewing widescreen movies the laptop screen looks so much sharper when set to 1280x800 it's likely the previous owner never saw how good this panel actually looked the harman kardon speakers allowed impressive for built-in speakers the laptop being so thick meant there was plenty of room for sizeable resonance chambers this model appears to be very similar to the compact r3000 a laptop i covered last year hp and compact had merged a few years prior selling strikingly similar machines the extra heft this chunky device has is put to good use no shortage of ports you'd want back in 2004. definitely one of the last laptops to include a parallel port which were primarily used for printers and scanners in the 90s and at the front there are also volume controls adding to the multimedia theme of this device with it being a higher end model it also has wi-fi built in along with a larger hard disk so let's clean out this old notebook and see if we can fix the busted hinge while we're at it 2022 is a new year so why not start by looking your best my friends over at manscape to hooking you up with the latest tools and formulations designed specifically for men they've sent over the performance package 4.0 which is an all-in-one men's grooming and hygiene kit now my facial hair could definitely do with a trim so let's begin maybe once more that's more like it the first item in the performance package 4.0 is the lawnmower 4.0 body trimmer this is manscape's 4th generation electric waterproof trimmer with skin safe technology this reduces nicks and cuts on the most sensitive parts of the body and i must say it also did a nice job on my face the lawnmower 4.0 has a super smart cordless charging system and led indicator lights to know just how much juice you've got left it's even got a travel lock feature if you press the power button three times it'll lock so it can't go off in your bag there's also other goodies included with the performance package 4.0 including the crop preserver bull deodorant and the crop reviver bull toner spray the crop reviver is a convenient spritz with cooling aloe vera to quickly refresh the area whenever you need it there's even a nose and ear trimmer called the weed whacker for a limited time get all this plus two free gifts the shed travel bag and a pair of manscape anti-chafing boxer briefs simply go to manscape.com today for 20 off plus free international shipping that includes the free gifts using my promo code psi at checkout manscape always use the right tools for the job opening up the zv5000 isn't all that hard and i was able to find an ifixit tutorial to follow i'll link that in the description below and this laptop uses a 2.5 inch ide hard drive which i could swap out for an ssd however the drive seems fine for the tests i'm doing next i removed several phillips head screws all of which throughout this teardown use the same bit which is convenient first of all i want to remove the screen and have a crack at the hinge the screws i just removed hold the plastic above the keyboard on releasing the plastic clips did take some time as i did want to be careful in my mind this doesn't look like an 18 year old laptop that being said plastics aren't strong forever and i'm sure a few bits are bound to break off during this video as well under the keyboard is also the second ram slot this unit has already been upgraded to 1.25 gigabytes which is totally fine back in 2004 this machine came with either 256 or 512 megabytes of ram as standard and the lower end variants didn't come with wi-fi oh how times have changed now we get to see exactly why the hinge is broken with any luck we'll be able to fix it well that seems like a bit of a problem the metal has completely given way the rectangular pins slot into that hole this is going to require a fair amount of work to fix such a massive failure of the metal after removing the hidden screws i carefully went around the edges to release dozens of small plastic clips there also seemed to be some adhesive tape around the edge of the display panel itself so i was careful not to snap the plastic bezel eventually i was able to remove that bezel and clearly this wasn't meant to be easy now i can remove the damaged hinges which are also attached to the sides of the display panel for extra strength it's not surprising that the small metal hole gave way honestly it's a pretty bad design as it will fatigue over time having the whole screen pivot on two small metal pegs isn't going to last and it didn't perhaps these pins seized up over time as i found them very difficult to turn after lubricating the parts i knocked them open slightly with a screwdriver and a hammer and since it looks like they've warped from years of use i clamped them down and straightened them out there was a definite improvement and they felt like they moved a lot more freely to help loosen them up even more i let them sit in some wd-40 the next day i began bending back the broken hinge pieces the vice easily straightened out the metal for added strength i decided to use super glue to hold the pins in place i let both pieces sit for quite a long time while clamped in place for even more strength i bent a small piece of mercano metal over the hinge that was then super glued on and clamped down the vice overnight i also added a little bit more glue along with some sugar crystals to form a hardened structure with all that drying i could disassemble the rest of the laptop and now we get our first look at the pretty decent cooling solution inside this fan looks way dustier than the other perhaps the other one only comes on when under load and getting the rest of the cover off only required the removal of a few more phillips head screws the dust build up wasn't as extreme as i was hoping and only a small carpet was forming on the exhaust fins and as it looked like before the other fan had barely any dust the 2 gigahertz cpu runs at 67 watts there's only one core one thread a new application of paste is definitely a good idea after so many years it is a socketed processor however compatible upgrades are pretty limited the old paste hadn't become hard and crusty so i do suspect it was changed at some point somewhere that did appear dusty underneath was the speaker assembly there was a single screw holding this in place and after some wiggling i was able to unclip it yummy speaker fluff i now began removing the dust from wherever i could if you've got a laptop that's starting to overheat or is used in a dusty environment you should definitely consider doing something similar the hp zv 5000 had models starting as low as 1149 and exceeding three thousand dollars for the highest end configurations according to cnet another higher tier option was the nvidia geforce iv 440 go graphics processor but even in 2004 this was considered an ageing chip as it was first introduced back in 2002 and getting access to that chip would require me to remove the metal frame itself which i don't consider necessary as it doesn't even run that hot anyway it's now time to see if the hinge pieces i fixed still line up keep in mind that both sides of the hinge were previously two separate pieces before i glued them together for extra strength with a good amount of luck i lined the hinges up and everything fit in place knowing that i felt confident enough to piece the display back together and i'll avoid moving the hinge until the glue has had at least 24 hours to properly cure i would recommend applying some thread locker to the hinge screws to stop them loosening over time we'll have to wait before putting the plastic back on as it requires the display to be bent back pretty far in the meantime i was able to clean off the casing with some eucalyptus oil being quite gentle i wiped off the display and once the hinge is strong with the glue dried i can put a bit more effort into removing the tougher debris and with a permanent marker i restored some of the missing paint on the speaker grille a few days later i came back and installed some software i hadn't moved the screen hinge the glue should have really dried by now i was expecting it all to fail however it seemed pretty solid i can now put the plastic cover back on the underside of the hinge cover doesn't line up perfectly due to the added thickness of my repair job so let's try running some old software on here i have fond memories of going through the windows xp tour as a kid it seems so futuristic at the time and it was also one of the only programs we had because we didn't have many games back then got a whole lot easier running star wars battlefront 2 with low settings at 1024 by 768 was a good experience totally playable on this laptop the original far cry game still looks pretty good this is on the low graphical settings and it runs pretty well on here i also can't make one of these videos without testing old school runescape it's not the smoothest experience but considering it's a much slower paced game this is totally fine another childhood favorite of mine is monster truck madness 2. this is a game released in 1998 so of course it ran perfectly web browsing is still possible however the two browsers i did try didn't play youtube videos firefox was nearly able to play an ad at 144p not ideal really an arctic fox was able to browse apple's website pretty well thankfully all good digital artists start their career drawing in microsoft paint and it's pretty clear that i personally never improved that's for sure i'm pretty stoked that the hinges seem to be functional once again i can now clean off the top of the display and a bit of eucalyptus oil proved effective at removing the name written in permanent marker faintly on the surface hp made a robust swiss army knife of a laptop lots of features and i think a pretty decent keyboard while it isn't slim or light it made up for it for being a solid all-round multimedia machine 3.6 kilograms or just under 8 pounds is not a laptop you'd want on your lap necessarily but it is a notebook that i'm glad to have in my collection so there we have it another old windows xp laptop from ebay you'd think i'd have enough of those by now and yeah i think i guess i do but i have a problem with collecting these kind of things anyway thank you very much for watching if you've liked the video feel free to leave a like and if you want to see more definitely consider subscribing i'll see you in the next video [Music] you
