hey i'm ben i'm a huge fly fisherman [Music] welcome back to another episode of huge fly fisherman thanks for taking the time out of your day to watch my video today's huge fly fisherman video is all about hats first of all if you don't wear a hat while you're fishing you're insane a hat is an essential part of your fishing kit they help you see fish protect you from the sun support your local sports ball team give free advertising to your favorite brand that doesn't care about you a hat is a useful tool and you can use it to make a statement about yourself and let the world know who you are and what you stand for let's talk about some different kinds of hats that you can wear when you're fishing we'll start with the basic ball cap the most important thing you need to know about a ball cap is that if it's black underneath the bill it will help you see fish better that's not a joke it's like i black that athletes wear fly fishers aren't athletes but some like to pretend they are so if you want to go that extra mile make sure your bill is black underneath and smear some mud on your cheeks now all ball caps are not the same so let's talk about some different types we'll start with the curved bill the dad hat this hat says you're either old a redneck or brian fleshing i don't like curved bills because i can't get the bill low enough to actually block out the sun because it hits my sunglasses okay how about a flat bill what does a flat bill say about you you drink monster you tow a jet ski behind your obnoxious truck and you fish streamers because you suck at fly fishing pro tip if you tuck your ears in you'll get 10 more feet on your cast now let's talk about a lesser known subset of the ball cap style hack the long bill maybe you've seen these before think lefty cray mark sosan or kevin they're obviously useful for blocking out the sun some have a little spoiler in the back to help you stay in the boat the long bill hat is quite useful but i think most guys today just wear them so they can look like they're old school am i right kevin all right moving on from ball caps next is the wide brim for extra sunny days i love my wide brim hat i wear it because i'm too lazy to put on sunscreen and i'm a pasty ginger so the wide brim is like a bimini for my head you can wear a wide brim hat for the functionality like me or you can wear one just for style points so you can fake being outdoorsy on instagram just remember when you're posing with your hat that if you're not also wearing sunglasses then all of your credibility as an angler is gone out the window next hat is the beanie or knit hat or toke or toboggan if you're a weirdo a beanie is what you wear on your dome if you're fishing in winter or if you're from florida and it's below 70 degrees for me it's important that my beanie covers my ears for some reason my body temperature is regulated by my earlobes if you want to shake things up with your beanie you can wear one over your ball cap yes you can shade your eyes from the sun and keep your head warm at the same time remember there are no rules in fly fishing let's see what other kind of fishing hats are there you could wear one of these hats for fishing if you're already married and not trying to attract a mate you could wear a hard hat if you're fishing for asian carp or if you're fishing in mexico you know what needs to be done what about lucky hats do you believe in lucky fishing hats i certainly do a lucky fishing hat should be disgustingly dirty and so threadbare it could disintegrate at any moment and when your lucky fishing hat finally dies it's perfectly acceptable to grieve by taking a day off to go fishing we'll finish up here with one of the great hat debates if you're wearing a hat and a hood does the hood go over the hat or the other way around hood over hat is comfy and loose hat over hood keeps your hood from blowing off and makes you look like a grandma wearing a bonnet but hey maybe that's what you're going for and i think that's gonna be all for today i hope you learned something or maybe had a little fun along the way thank you for watching my video today i'll be back as soon as i can with another huge fly fisherman video until then go to my website and get yourself a hat and stay huge [Music] is this part called the bill or the brim
