hey welcome to flying wheels my name is craig from flying wheels in today's video i got the big fu from a customer and it really didn't feel good and it wasn't my fault to be honest with you it was rather rude and on the same note i actually sold the colorado and a chevy avalanche around here somewhere to two different customers all about the same topic so today's video is all about taking deposits down payments should we hold a car for somebody should we not hold a car for somebody what do you do when people are getting upset with you because you sold a car on them and is it the first common with cash gets it that whole policy there's so many things going on and it upsets a lot of people and today that's what we're going to talk about my name is craig from flying wheels that's get go so once again welcome to flying wheels i own a small car dealership and i've recently made some videos on how i've scaled back i've made some videos on how i've slowed down my business and how i've made appointments and things are pretty good i mean i'm still overworked and i'm still stressed because i'm short staffed that is not what this video is about i've already discussed that stuff today's video it's gonna be hopefully short and sweet because somebody gave me the big fu also left me some bad reviews and just generally made me feel bad about myself for something i don't really think i did wrong now i sold a camper last week to somebody that was happy as pie happy as a pig in mud happy as a kid that loves to eat with cake but i had also scheduled many appointments for this camper now i had told you in one of my other videos i'm showing everything by appointment it's working really really well for me so i was gone all weekend and then i scheduled my appointments for monday evening when i returned or tuesday or wednesday or thursday or whatever and i set up all my appointments well somebody didn't show up multiple times last week then they didn't show up monday so someone else showed up with the cash and bought it and then i messaged the guy politely the next day hey sorry it was sold and he replied with some really really rude responses which i'm gonna show you right now oh you gotta love selling stuff on the internet to people and this one i got a big fu you guys are gonna like the store even though it was awful for me this right here is a 2021 camper trailer that we no longer use because we built a house and now i want to sell it on the cheap so i can pay off some debt so i listed it for sale last week and i've had a ton of interest one guy in particular wanted to show up three different times and didn't show up all three times now i was away this weekend i had a bunch of messages so i told everybody hey you want to see this thing i can show it to you monday afternoon or anytime after that when i return now this one guy that was particularly interested i messaged him first even though he blew me off several times and said i'll be around after 6 30 and he said it's gonna have to be tomorrow between five and five thirty well what happened somebody else came last night and bought the camper paid full asking price so i messaged everybody else this morning hey trailer sold late last night sorry for the inconvenience this did not go over well with this particular guy he responded with you're kidding me i was first to talk to you i would have been there yesterday if you didn't come back late that's a real shitty thing to do to me because you could have at least seen if i would have paid more because i would have and i really wanted the camper now just to say this out loud he might have come and hated it he might have come and negotiated it he might have not come at all because he already hasn't several times so i politely responded sorry i had six people interested i pushed everyone off till yesterday and today first guy came and paid asking price it's not a shitty thing to do by the way first with the cash gets it oh it keeps going if you had that many people interested in it you would have mentioned it to me at some point typical dealer that camper was going to change my life but you don't give an f you don't even give me a chance or a warning you effin liar how do you live with yourself you're an effing liar shark is all you'll ever be this is how people talk to me like regularly like i'm not a person with feelings it hurts right here when people say this stuff to me politely once again i just said i understand you're upset it'll also change someone else's life now you've been calling me for a week and haven't shown up blame yourself not me you could have come last week you'd have come last night but you didn't i'm just a guy selling a camper i have no loyalty to anyone but my family and paying our bills your hurtful words are out of anger but very much uncalled for it's just another day in the life of selling things online now that is primarily what this video is based on as well as how i sold this colorado and the chevy avalanche not this the chevy avalanche over there to two different people when both came to look at that chevy colorado that's gonna i'm gonna get to that shortly now this trailer i had set up many appointments and to be honest with you i tell everybody hey it's the first with cash that gets it and when people ask hey will you leave a deposit can i leave a deposit so i can look at it first i always say no well listen i don't want your money to hold it to hope you want to buy it when you show up and then turn away everyone else what happens if i take your hundred dollars and i tell everybody else sorry it's sold somebody really wants this thing and then you show up and you're like hey i'll give you fifteen hundred dollars less or two thousand dollars less you try to negotiate or worse you're like nah it's not for me i want my hundred dollars back what good was that hundred dollars for me it was useless to me all that did was help you as a buyer and push off all the other buyers to help me which in turn hurts my sale so i'd rather not your hundred dollars and i tell everybody listen i've had a lot of people interested in this thing it's gonna be the first with cash gets it but people are still upset people still call you an a-hole people are still mad at you and blame you when they aren't the ones that got it it's the first that gets it with cash if i really want to be an ex-bike on facebook marketplace you might know that i love bmx bikes from the 90s and i rushed to go get there and hey listen somebody else bought it i'm sorry you know what that stinks for me but that's you know they somebody beat me to it whatever you see a great great great deal on facebook marketplace craigslist somewhere you can't wait to go get that thing but somebody else beat you to it that's exactly what happened somebody else beat you to it now taking down payments or deposits is inevitably going to hurt you if you have another buyer interested in that let me explain in more detail now i have somebody interested in let's say this chevy suburban okay they come they look at it they want it they need financing but you know they're really really interested in and you might not have anyone else definitively looking at this car today or in the next few days you don't have anyone promising i would then take a retainer to hold this car for that customer and i'll say listen go to your loan application i'll give you 24 hours i'll give you 48 hours if it falls through let me know i'll just refund it back to you that is fine why because i don't really have anyone else qualified on this vehicle it's not going to hurt me it's going to help them it's going to make them feel better it also ties them to the vehicle which makes them feel more obligated to buy it if they're like i'm going to go see how we do and then they might not ever come back but if they have money tied to that vehicle it's now theirs they have like a personal bond it's now their car that's why that deposit is so important for you this truck someone comes and looks at it and they say i love it i don't have all the money right now i'll give you 250 today that way you know it's in good faith that i want it tomorrow i'll come back with the cash or in three days i'll come back next time i'm available to get here i'll come back with the cash so i agree okay i'll take this for you i can see that you're sincerely interested in it and you're willing to put some money down i don't take large down payments i don't take large retainers i take 250 and i'll hold this vehicle for you obviously that's applied to your balance so it comes off the balance and then just come back in a few days when you're ready for it it is non-refundable and i make it clear listen i don't like taking retainers i don't like holding cars for people but you're seriously interested it's non-refundable if you change your mind in three days you can't have that retainer back you cannot have that 250 back so i give them a big non-refundable stamp wait what does that say that one stinks well it's supposed to say non-refundable and i also write that i've taken a 250 non-refundable retainer and i have them initial it that way if anything ever comes back or they call their credit card company and they charge it back i can say listen i did my part i did my part they canceled on me they paid it's non-refundable they agreed everything's fine now when else would i take a deposit or a retainer or whatever you want to call it there's multiple terms and some are legal in certain states and others are not legal in certain states it really depends on your own state but here's another time that i'll take a non-refundable retainer i am selling this 2004 chrysler town and country customer looks at it they love it but they might hear like the brakes grinding or a clunking in the front end well listen mr customer i'll pay for that i'll take care of that or it might need tires okay mr customer i'll do four tires on it for you and i'll cover the cost well what happens in three days when i've spent a thousand dollars on tires and that customer now says i change my mind i don't really want it well listen i just put a thousand dollars in tires it didn't need tires you just wanted tires i mean the tires were legal i did the tires for you and they're like oh sorry no big deal and they move on no big deal for them right but it's a big deal for you it costs you a thousand dollars nobody gives an f about you as a dealer as a seller so you want to make sure you cover yourself so in this situation i would have taken 500 put it towards the repairs of this vehicle and then tell them that's going towards the repairs and it's coming off the balance that is non-refundable because i'm doing this work for you in consideration of the sale i wouldn't normally do that so that is when i would take like 200 or 500 or whatever the cost of the repairs are towards the vehicle and tell them it's not refundable now i always talk about cya cover your rear right you always have to cover your rear and the way to do that is to just be transparent if it's somebody applying for a loan and they just need time and they're not quite sure i'll say yeah i'll take 250 and you know what if it doesn't get approved then just let me know i'll refund it why because i said i will refund it if they are buying something and leaving money for me to hold the vehicle towards the balance or whatever however you want to say it i will tell them okay but it's non-refundable if they want me to hold the car while they drive all the way out from rhode island and they are adamant about it happening which i always say no i will tell them okay but it is going to be non-refundable you're paying me for my time okay all right but if you change your mind it is non-refundable so if you're just transparent if you're always saying these things in advance people are still going to get mad i mean it's a 250 bucks most people are good about it because they'll just say like you're right i agreed to it it's on me it's like a 50 50 thing probably because it's still their money and they're gonna get upset at you you're gonna be the bad guys so is it worth like bad google reviews and everything else over 250 dollars usually not but i'll keep it because this is like our word i had an agreement with you you agreed on it so i stick to our agreements but for everything that i just said i usually don't take deposits interruption because i have to show you this perfect example of how taking a deposit could have significantly backfired now i shot this video that you're watching three days ago three days later this just happened which goes against everything i've been saying in this video last week like a week and a half ago a kid from town came in he wanted to buy this accurate tsx he had bad credit i got him financed on it i got him approved on it and then i never heard back from him at all no idea what happened to him he called me and said i might come in next week and i'll leave a deposit and i'll take care of it never hurt him again all right deal's dead right let's move on three days ago a woman in town super nice lady came in to look at this 2008 nissan rogue she wants it for her daughter she loves it she says i want to leave a hundred dollars my husband's coming later today we just hold it till he gets here yeah i don't usually take deposits but if he comes to tell you what i'll give you 24 hours just until then and then i can't hold it any longer she says fine no problem she gives me a hundred bucks reluctantly i don't even want to take it but she's in town and i'll hold it for her just in good will well her husband comes and i get a call the next day and the wife mother says you know what my husband didn't really like the rogue he loved the acura take that hundred and put it towards the acura i'm like all right fine when are you coming in tomorrow so the husband comes tomorrow he looks which was yesterday looks at it he likes it the wife likes it the daughter likes it they say okay we'll call you tomorrow okay now to me that means they're going to buy it but to them it means they're going to sit on it overnight so now it's been a three-day process not 24 hours meanwhile i still have her 100 bill so to her i'm holding her acura now until she decides yes or no to me i'm thinking okay they're coming today to buy it because they all looked at it and they all loved meanwhile the customer from a week and a half ago that loved that car and got financed on it calls me and says craig i'm coming today i'm gonna buy that acura now what do you do what do you do i have a customer that i think wants it meanwhile a guy that i already got approved that wants to buy it today wants to come pick it up how do you handle that situation that's why you don't take deposits now let me tell you what happened i'm in here busting my knuckles on this cadillac escalade because my mechanic's on vacation customer that came and wants the car for her daughter strolls in and she says craig we talked about it last night we don't want the acura can i have my hundred dollars back so what good was that hundred dollars for me it was just basically hey don't sell this for three four days while i think about it if i think about and decide against it i want my hundred dollars back like what is the point it is completely moot now if i kept your hundred she's gonna be pissed and she lives in town and you don't want anyone upset in town with you or your business so i would never hold it on her so it just is counterproductive for me it really really hurts me now luckily this works out my favor because she doesn't want it so i can still sell it to the other guy that was financed on it so it's going to work out okay in this situation but it could have worked out really terribly like what if i told that guy hey sorry i took a deposit on it yesterday i can't sell it he's like all right i'll go look somewhere else then you lose that sale then the lady strolls in and she's like well i decided i don't want it anymore what do you do that just another reason why you shouldn't be taking deposits what am i talking about now okay i sold a boat last year one of my favorite boats i had a hurricane i absolutely loved this boat and apparently i listed it too cheap because my phone exploded same thing happened with the nissan 350z from a couple weeks ago my phone went crazy and if those people that really really want this thing aren't the first person to get it they're going to be upset so someone called a lady called action she's like i love it i want a boat for my family i need to wait till my husband gets home we take a check i'm like no i can't take a check it's cash only she's like okay we're gonna go to the bank and i'm gonna come over after we get home from work i'm like all right fine call me before you come by whatever meanwhile someone else calls he's like hey i live right up the road i want a boat for my family will you be there soon i can swing by right now i have the cash yeah absolutely come on by he gave me my asking price he paid cash and gone and he's happy i see him on the water still to this day and he loves the boat i call the other customer and i'm like hey listen i sold the boaster what how could you do that now it was my personal boat they linked my cell phone number to my business and then found my business and then left me you had facebook reviews google reviews yelp blah blah blah blah blah blah because she didn't get the boat now yeah she went to the bank to go get her cash but she didn't make it in time she wasn't the first with the cash first to get it is the winner right that's usually how it is so here's one of the many facebook reviews that i got on google and facebook and yelp and everywhere literally never even talked to this guy talk to the wife this guy's a clown he was selling a boat we contacted him he said it was available but it's friday and he was leaving for the weekend that was true so we asked if we could come by it before he left and he said yeah still true asked him if he wanted a bank check or cash he said cash he was about an hour and 45 minutes so my girl immediately stopped working racist to the bank to get cash was a large amount because there's a boat and starts driving there texted him and told him gps puts in there three he responded three works fine at 245 he texted her saying that he sold it to someone else not only were we pissed that he wasted our time but we have two kids that are heartbroken he is not a man of his word very unethical but what should one expect from a d-bag used car salesman people love throwing that in my face now this was on my business page this was a personal boat that i was selling on my personal facebook page it's a real bummer so i just responded this is not a customer flying wheels me personally was selling my family boat had minimum of 30 calls on the first day this person's wife said they wanted to leave a deposit to hold it for them until they have time for someone to look at it with them and then make a decision now that wasn't included here she wasn't even sure that she was buying it she wanted to bring someone with them to look at it just in case i replied no deposits i'm not holding it i'm leaving for the weekend the first with the cash can have it i say that to everybody it sold to someone else before they could get it i reached out to everyone i spoke with and this woman's husband called me threatened me and yeah he like threatened to kick my ass i have no shows in clowns as you say never show up to their appointments or hold their end of the agreement on a daily basis that's why i was selling it to the first person that comes with cash and how dare you attack my business of being sour on a boat that you didn't get and has nothing to do with flying wheels i wish i could leave reviews for customers you sir would be a one star just another day in the life of selling things on the internet now what do i do when multiple people want to see the same vehicle like that chevy colorado over there well like i said already in this video and recently in another video i'm trying to show everything by appointment so if i'm gone friday afternoon and coming back tuesday i'll set everybody up for tuesday wednesday thursday friday whenever it's available for them and convenient for the both of us i will list it now i talked to somebody on saturday and they're like oh man i really want to see this colorado like i'll be there tuesday 10 a.m if you want he's like i'll be there tuesday 10 a.m well i will usually follow up on monday i forgot this guy followed up this morning right after someone that i talked to yesterday called me and said hey i'm going to be there at 10 a.m so now i set up two people for 10 a.m which is bad on me because you don't want two people fighting over the same car because number one it could work out in your favor if two people know that two people are interested they'll kind of battle back and forth and work off each other the first guy will buy it because he doesn't want the second guy to get it that works on your favor but it doesn't usually work out in your favor that way because people are bitter and and just tough maybe i'm bitter maybe you haven't been ruined by this business but i don't know so let's say i show it to two people one guy comes and i i will usually as a courtesy say like hey i know you just came to look at this thing like let's say i didn't have an appointment someone comes and looks at it at 10 a.m they're here but the guy with the appointment shows up at 1005. i will usually say to the first guy that shows up hey look at it i did have an appointment for 1005 for somebody else so if you don't mind looking at it just i have to let the other person look at it as well because they were here they called first they made the appointment well the problem is the first guy will pick it apart in front of the second guy and they can work off each other negatively as well so you really have to think of it like it's going to go against you so you don't want to set two people up it makes everything uncomfortable makes everything awkward and it's just not good for any of the parties so what did i do well i messaged the guy that called me this morning and said listen i completely forgot i set up an appointment at 10 a.m for someone else that i spoke to on saturday you're welcome to come but he was the first i spoke with if he's here when you're here if you don't mind just hanging out in your car that's fine and then you're welcome to it after that or i can call you if it sells or doesn't sell and then you're welcome to it at that point it's up to you and i also messaged the first person and said hey i just want to make sure you're here at 10 because someone else is really interested and they want to come at 10. now this puts a little bit of fire under the original person's butt now he's really hyped on it because he doesn't want to miss out on he's spoken many times and now he has that like fear of loss effect working on him we're like oh someone else is interested i'm now i'm really interested so that works well in your favor now the guy that was gonna be here at 10 a.m that uh i scheduled second he showed up but i spoke to him in advance turns out the car didn't work for him anyway he was really really tall and that's a really really small car now he's here and i ended up selling him this avalanche for the same price now i took uh like more than a thousand dollars off of this because it's a sale he's already here it was easy and the other guy bought that car so the other guy bought that one helped me put this guy in this one two cars two people same time easy peasy lemon squeezy it works really really well for us all now i'm gonna summarize because i said i wouldn't rant and i'm already ranting i can't help myself if you're a buyer first with cash gets the sale gets the purchase don't be bitter don't be upset don't be sour if somebody says they're gonna hold something for you and they don't i mean that's on them but if you're not the first to get something it is what it is maybe it just wasn't meant to be anyway think of it that way don't take it out of the cellar there's no loyalty anywhere we're all strangers we're all human all we have to think about is focusing on making sure that we're covered our families are covered that our food is on the table like that's our most important thing so a sale is important to us so we can continue moving forward and yes you want to be good to each other as good humans but i mean it's the business of sales you there's no loyalty in it so you can't really just hope a stranger is going to show up with all the money when someone else is here ready to buy so just don't hold it against the seller now as a seller transparency is key be upfront with people tell them that somebody else is interested tell them that i can't take a deposit or i will take a deposit but it's not refundable or that you will take a deposit and it is refundable that's up to you guys completely but i hope i did give you some information on how i made two sales today how i did sell a camper and why i made the decision what happened with my boat all of these things are things that i go through as car dealer i mean like apparently we're scum of the earth to everybody it is really really difficult but it is lucrative and it has helped establish the lifestyle that i have which is great and i provided a camper to somebody that was homeless that legit needed a place to live still upset somebody else about it i provided a boat to a guy who wants to take his family boating even though someone else didn't get to take their family boating and then i provided transportation to two different people that actually don't have transportation right now that guy has no car that guy is starting his own construction company so now like you're you are helping people but you know not
