[Music] the insiders were here with another survival dispatch university today we are going to talk about fire you know our issue to covered fire and food so we're going to break down just fire that's what we use what we prefer different options that you can use we're going to talk about how to get a spark of flame started our preferred method we're going to talk about different types of store-bought tinder you can have or or buy we're going to talk about different types of tinder you can find while in nature as well go through some of the kits that we have you know preferred methods of carrying it and just kind of break down you know what we use and then make sure that comment below as far as if you have any other questions that you want us to cover in our next live video that we do on Facebook so make sure you leave your questions and comments below we'll cover those and you know let's just work on on building building our kits making them better and working together as a community so so Chris is here with me where's gonna kind of start at the top yeah well I mean you know like well what's your what's your good you're in the woods you know this isn't like a survival situation but you're in the woods you're hiking I'm hiking and you were gonna build a fire what's your go-to we're gonna grab fur I mean first it's a lighter yeah pick later and I mean when we say lighter it can be whatever kind you prefer you can get a peanut lighter yeah I've got one I like your one myth lighter like it's here somewhere this is this is my preferred yeah and this thing is kind of crazy I like it there fire I got fired yeah you know that's gonna light something about us and yeah it's butane it don't last forever you got to carry fuel but this is so convenient easy and I can do this with one hand yeah even if I'm injured yeah I can get a fire going yeah and did this thing's kind of cool too you can switch it and it'll you know do it that way slow so this is my go-to this is and I carry like just like you I carry a bit lighter too you know a couple of them because I think so many people get caught up in the primitive fire skills and those are fun to learn they're fun to practice and I do too and I like doing them but and sometimes I'll use that as my primary word but if I'm in a and on a real emergency I need a fire yeah yeah I'm gonna start with this yeah and and I will say you'll see a theme that goes along with my fire kit pretty much everything in it is bright orange yeah I'm not trying to hide at this point if I'm building a fire you're not and the last thing that I would want is to drop a all black Ferro rod or something and leaves on the ground and now you can't find it and you know I remember on your season of alone I can't remember which which guy it was yo he lost his Ferro rod he was on a beach that was literally like black pebble stone okay yeah and he I think he signed it on his jacket or something and then lifted his jacket up and flipped his jacket up and tossed us feral and and literally it broke his will yeah yeah he was done it crushed him and because he was like yeah that was his you know I think at times we talked about morale boosters oh yeah and and there's there's less boosters than there is Nega negative yeah there's you know Rajee positives in our now you can find so many negatives and and losing your way to build a fire and fire I mean not only can it you know cooking food purify your water keep you warm yeah but it is a morale boost Winley when things are bad and you're in a hard time or a rough spot especially if you're wet and cold yeah man getting a fire it's just such a morale boot yes I mean it'll bring you up mentally physically yeah and I will say as far as a Bic lighter I mean this is probably what most people lean to always make sure you take a small zip tie and run it under the plunger this red part right here the way can't get the pressed in your bag and ya bleed out all that when you need it you know and the reason why I start with a lighter is because it gives me a constant flame to get something started where you're trying to use a Ferro rod you're working with sparks and I mean it can just take a while it doesn't give you that constant flame that you can hold constant source of heat will begin with yeah I mean so so I always start with with the lighter yeah me too that's my mic go to same deal and I'm and now you mentioned I need to get some reflective tape to put on this because I keep forgetting to do yeah and and I mean that's just something you know there's things one of the biggest things that I want to get out of these universities is passing on our failures yeah and our bad experiences because I think you learn more from the bad experiences and the good ones yeah and and I have learned throughout the years being in the woods hiking everything's bright orange I wouldn't use a blue or black or a green with yeah I want something that's I like the blues and and and like red to that it's not a natural color yeah the blue in particular to me stands out yeah I drop that in the woods because it's not a natural color yep and you're I can kind of gizelle so I start with a lighter you know and so I mean that's a you know that's that's the easiest way I think to to get a fire going and then we'll talk about let's go Ferro rod kind of options yeah I mean there's there's a zillion styles of feral rods big small yeah this I know this is a true fire tactical here with the magnesium and then the Ferro rod he makes a great product there's even a little magnet in here to keep your piece of blade nice so you can throw your spark and it's always there of course you can use your knife if you lose it or whatever but it's nice to have it right yeah yeah and you can get the magnesium ones that like Coleman makes and stuff that you see a Walmart all the time I'm not a huge fan of them if you're gonna buy those magnesium block ones don't buy the Coleman or the Cogan's you need to find one manufactured by domes company do ans that is the real one that works of magnesium and like the color in the coal man and those cheap ones that stuff is so hard yeah it is nearly impossible to scrape like this magnesium here on this one this is some of the softest magnesium there is and this stuff just comes off so easy yeah so there we go couple scrapes I've already started hold a pile of magnesium yeah and that's what you need you don't want something that you're having to work get at you want it to just peel off a nice little curl yeah you know a little bit of pressure right there you can see you get a nice little curls out of it and that's what you want because you need that surface area that curl to if you just have a powder pile of dust lay on the ground and you hit with a spark it may or may not catch but you have these little curls that actually catches a spark way better yeah and and I mean this is just a an inexpensive Ferro rod that I I have in my pack as a as a secondary you know fire source if I want to and it comes with a striker I mean you can use a blade if you want but you know I I like feral rods as a law term oh yeah survived a fail-safe I mean yeah wet whatever they're gonna work and and you're going to get years really yeah out of these things I mean you know I know Chris has a real big diameter yeah I've got a one-inch one it's about that long weighs one pound yeah that's a little overkill but that's that's a grass sagres better ah you know these things I mean you can get thousands upon thousands oh yeah Drake's off well and too you know there's a way to do this you know I see a lot of people they'll have their feral rod and particularly using a knife man they'll they'll just hammer on these things and and it's not necessary a simple piece of hacksaw blade like this and a stump that's not like that on fire and it's just a simple little strike not the carbon off this thing here that's all you need just that that's all you need to do you know you works like making afraid and stuff and you'll see people chopping on these things you're destroying the life of it it's not gonna last nearly as long you're not gonna get nearly as many uses out of it as just a simple strike and you're saying some of you look and say oh that's better to light a fire I'll guarantee you I put this into the right tinder I love this stuff you know like I care even a bag of magnesium let's not hit that gonna be a hell of a fire but you know it's gonna catch so you don't need to don't abuse your tool here that's what I'm trying to get at is you know use it properly and it'll last a long long time yeah and so I mean that's a that's a you know fair odds you know in general are great to have around as a backup you know take a little bit longer to get a fire eat I think I think the biggest thing is is as you tear down your tinder your set up everything has to be perfect yes you know with a fire with with a lighter it could be a little bit wet a little bit damp you're still gonna get it go bit bigger yeah and it's like when you go from from man-made objects to now primitive or wrong in flint and steel or you know Robins did you know bow drills however diction fires yeah yeah you've got to have and that's the thing too when we've talked on what build a fire get everything together yeah a lot of these shows i watch you'll see the people set out to build a fire and they'll have a little pile of leaves something and they'll use their magnesium and they'll get that lit and then they're looking around for stuff to add to it get your tinder ready yeah get your kindling ready you know get the next size stuff because I don't go from kindling straight up to you know wood and then your bigger fuel so that you can build that thing up into a sustainable heat source and then have a fire yeah it's it's not the time to go looking for firewood when there's a flame you need to have that all set and the rule I like to use is gather as much as you think you need and then double that you know because no one ever gathers enough firewood yeah we've all been there and camping in the middle of night and we're stumbling around in the dark looking for something throw in the fire because it's about to go well yeah and then you know next next way you can go is is a spark wheel you know which is pretty much a very thin Ferro rod turned vertically yeah like this is the lighter Flint so I said yeah so instead of striking the side you're now rubbing the top with an aggressive you know striker wheel kind of like you find on a lighter and you get you know a nice a nice little spark I actually prefer this over a Ferro rod because this I can operate I mean literally if I have three hangers with one hand I don't need two hands what it also allows me to do with a Ferro rod you're always trying to get it into the tender and if it slips or something then you're not getting your glass or in your glass where this I mean if I'm holding whatever it might be a petroleum jelly or these commercial extender you know I can hold it precisely where I want and and direct the spark exactly where it where I want it this is the XO tack one this is hands-down my favorite one I think it's the best engineered spark bill there is I mean from the lanyard attachment and then you can unscrew the bottom and it keeps a quick tender tab in here so you know I always have an emergency way of starting a fire on me all in one package its watertight you can you know throw this in the water you never got to worry about it it's great for throw it in your pocket keychain and your bag small kits and you have so that's a spark wheel and I would consider those to be the three primary - yeah lighter Ferro rod spark wheel yeah when you're talking man-made stuff about getting into the primitive fictions yeah and then from there we can talk about well and I would say there's a couple more ways to sort of I mean nine volt battery well not matter steel wool a road flare you know this is a this is the end-all be-all emergency fire starter and or something similar to a road flare is I didn't bring one with me but they're called fire pucks you can search money on this on there pretty much a road flare but it's like a hockey puck size object that you strike the top and they burn for probably seven or eight minutes I mean a fire that yes just read you'll get a fire yeah so you know those are those are the ways that we prefer to start fire and then you can go the primitive route also ya know which which we'll do another video yeah well on that different we'll get out one day and out the fields and I'll shoot one where we messed with all these different ones and talk about so but we're just talking to you man-made stuff that you can you can buy throw into your kit and get your fire kit going so then the next step i mean we've we've talked about how to produce a spark it lame yep now something to catch it yeah and we just talked about magnesium so here's just a sack of magnesium shavings that I have that this would be thousands upon thousands of fires get Agron yeah quite a few I mean really you just need a pinches yeah and one of the cool things I think people are doing nowadays is you know we all carry 550 cord and they're coming out with the newer ones with everything from brass wire in them to fishing line jute in this one this one here has the the fire caller yeah which is this stuff here which is pretty cool this easily takes a spark you know you want to rough it up get those fibers exposed to catch your spark and and this is your tinder you get this going then you have a tinder nest obviously of foreign grass the finest stuff the finder the better the more surface area on that product the better into which we'll put this and get it burning and then you start building a fire from there yeah my all-time favorite for that though always is just the Vaseline cotton balls you know you can make these yourself at home and like that's all you need that right there will start your fire and here that here's one thing that I'll say about universities our Facebook live idiot you're gonna realize Chris and I don't agree all the time no thing no I I hate petroleum jelly cotton balls I hate I feel like it's just I'm in the woods now I have junk all over my hands see but to me the like they're cheap they're inexpensive they work well they burn well they're reliable yeah I agree with with all of that the other thing to see the other reason I carry this stuff is you know you're in the woods you know tool maintenance you know you got it you're gonna get rust on a blade or something your hatchet your nitrile you can smear this stuff on it you can use it on your lips yeah you can i chat skin I use something similar it's a little bit cleaner at times I use and you can get these at almost any medical and you can get them at Walgreens CVS they are Vaseline prep pads yes Vaseline prep Penn State come in this very thin mylar bag giving them up there medical grade stuff I mean they're completely sealed they have tons of uses first of all I can use it we're talking about fire yeah I mean you can use it it pretty much if there's a gunshot wound and you get thrown into an ambulance and it's a chest wound an EMT is going to use a petroleum pad for the most part that's what these most of time because it just cost-effectively I can't pull out hey Lucy right every single time they're gonna stick that on you and tape you up with that and then vent it off as they need to so I mean it could be used as a like a sucking chest wound gunshot wound it can be used for fire so I mean I do carry those they're multiple but they they stay a little bit cleaner because I can just open them up and I can spark it in there and I knit my fingers yeah you know that's the difference with us you know you can go with the the quick like quick tender there's all kinds of different I carry those I've got my little PS case on my bag over there and those are what's in my PS K that is because because again I don't want to pack this until PS k yeah the this this one came from XO tech just because it came with the XO tech striker that I bought I will say when you're looking for these look for the ones that are kind of pink or orange looking because that means they have wax coating on them there's a lot of guys that will just they make hot hot you know and yes they'll catch but they won't burn as long because they don't yeah that'll Brown yeah so it's gotta feel so make sure you look for the ones you know I mean I know gosh UST makes the everybo I mean I buy them in bulk on Amazon yeah I buy them like 50 or 100 or taya these big bad yeah and just just look on the kits and you'll have a slightest like orangish pink tint to them and that means it has wax in those little ones that I I prefer to use anything to extend burg times yeah yeah so so make sure you look at that you know we have insta fire here there's a lot of these too I know wise food makes one as well these falls in the same line as wet fire trioxane yeah tracks bars you know all kinds of stuff this is pretty much a granulated you know trioxane bar that's I mean I know there's other stuff in here whatever though it's that I haven't messed with that stuff yet this kind of a product well does it work with Ferro rod yes yeah yeah it worked pretty well so this is one of the fire kits that I have and I have it I what I do is is I actually take these because this is probably three or four fires probably in here I would say good so I'll take these and I'll take smaller Ziploc bags and we run it out okay and they can throw in different kits what you can also do with this is if you leave it as a bigger I mean you can throw this in it's it's light as can be yeah I don't wait nothing you can get a fire started get some tender on it and then pour some more of this on there it's like more fuel build it up build it up a little more actually build a damp dry yeah so you know so you know insta fire trioxane bars wet fire it's a it's a solid fuel source that you can use and it's one that you know is gonna light yeah you know the the stuff we find in nature you know bit birch bark or mosses grasses all that kind of stuff you know they're inconsistent yeah they're they're natural they're they're you know they're not always gonna be the same the benefits of this kind of stuff you know is it's it's a known you know what it is you know what's gonna work so these are good to have in and if you're in an area that has a lot of good tinder maybe don't use this first just because you have it if you've got quality tender laying around that's easily accessible use it and I'd recommend doing that when you're out camping and practicing and stuff first because in a survival situation this stuff is your fallback this is you know or crisis you know I'm wet and I'm cold I need to fire anyone right now well we're gonna go you know we're gonna go this way yeah but to build your skills up start with a little bit harder and I don't mean with a friction fire yeah I mean you know tried natural tenders maybe practice with your Ferro rod but have these other methods on you so that when those fail you know and you can't find quality natural tenders you have a way to get a fire going yeah and so I mean that kind of leads us into you know the man-made tenders that you know help us get the fire started and and then Chris talked about you know in nature I mean you know birch wood or birch bark and you know fat that would I carry fat wood and oh my I can't mine too cuz it can be shaved down yeah you don't wanna hear you know when you go to use this stuff it's just gonna be seeing principles of magnesium you're just gonna shave off a pile of it yeah same principle and a little pile of these curls like that you know a little more than that of course that's all you need to do and this will last for a long long time let's start many many fires for you now if you're in a area where it's wet and and you've got poor wood then you can split this thing out you start making little toothpick sized pieces to help feed that fire to get the heat up to start drying that material out to keep a fire going so you know that's man-made you wanna talk about kids yeah I mean here's one this came in a battle box that I have and I'll be doing a video on battle box later a little different than what everybody else does I hate those yeah let's open it I don't do that but this one's the zombie tinder and so you can buy commercial kits you know this is one and that's so well yeah yeah well I love their products actually I'm real fan of theirs and so in here you know they give you a piece of paracord for making a bow drill again back to primitive last-ditch some jute twine this is what they were famous for I guess this is their zombie firestarter but look into this this is like fire their last there I gotta have a fire got out right now well if all your Karen's a Ferro rod which is kind of funny to me in this kit you need a flame to like this there's a wick mm-hm you know lighter you need a batch they didn't put any of those items in here even one match one lifeboat man you would have been yeah so there's no way to light that thing but and then they've got a piece of petroleum gauze aritaum cotton and some char cloth which I know you don't like char cloth I like char cloth I make it home again you know it's very nice thing here's what it is it's the reason why I don't gravitate towards it it doesn't engulfed with flame I know it's a smoke it keeps an ember in it that's that then you need another process I mean you need something else you need a very fine tinder bundle yeah to then blow this into flame it's not like you're gonna put a spark to this with this char cloth and kind of fine and have a flame you're gonna have a little glowing smoldering thing that you need to put into a tinder ball and nurse into a flame by blowing into it and keeping the oxygen flow going yeah and so that is a skill for sure it's not that's not a guaranteed fire and then they include a pretty nice fire steel you know it's machined little aluminum deals got the striker built into it the striker comes out this and always get this wrong so there's the striker so it's all machine together on the lanyard so you can keep it together but it's a it's a pretty nice little striker and then they had a flint and steel and and I'm gonna knock them on this because here's the piece of steel and as you can see they've got a divot here too for using it for a bearing block for a bow drill so that's kind of a neat idea this is a little bit heavy yeah I'm steel it's steel and it's just carbon steel it's just raw steel so it also rust something to bear in mind and they put this piece of Flint in here except this isn't Flint this is some kind of a piece of like it's like calcium almost like limestone yeah limestone yeah now there is a nugget of Flint right there but I've tried with this thing many times and I have yet to ever see a spark come off of it you see I'm just not gonna chunks of counts of lime off this but so you need to be careful when you buy commercial kits and test them and test them don't don't why some point doesn't throat your patent I'm good yeah fire kit yeah I mean aside from this and and and their lack of forward-thinking on this item this is fairly decent you know it's it's very basic I mean you get a Ferro rod and a couple pieces of tender that's all you get in this kid so you know I would be careful I'm not saying I'll buy one I think it's pretty neat kid comes into ten and they got a couple of like cord locks in here for making a lanyard for something but assuming with that yeah pair of cord so it's not a bad kid but I wouldn't qualify it as a as a as a good kit yeah it would be better than nothing you know it'd be something to have so when you're in when you're looking at fire are kids and maybe we should do that well maybe we should do a comparison compare get a few buy several of them and we'll do a tabletop compare so maybe you take them out the field and and we'll put them a test you see what they do cuz um I hate seeing people buy stuff like this under the guise of being ready yeah and what I always tell people is if you just feel like in in your state of life right now I don't have time to put a fire kit together yeah now if your first thought is I don't know how to put a fire kit together just listen to what we're saying I'm gonna tell you what to put in watch a video yes watch the video yeah if you just say I just do not have time to buy the stuff put it in a bag build it myself yeah go go buy a kit go buy one yeah but in in all actuality I mean you can put a better fire kit together for the same price with everything in it that you know how to use and it will work and will well for less money than you're gonna be I will say we didn't talk you know lifeboat matches I were just gonna say that we haven't talked matches containers you know for them oh yeah I say make sure yeah I like ziplock bags yes little little containers like this this is just an example of something that you could very easily turn into a fire kid yeah right I like I like the ziplock bags you know from from hiking I keep weight down it's it's water well this is a lock sacks as you say see now the difference between when we're talking ziplock bags let's talk about it this is a lock sack bag these are great bags this is your conventional sandwich with zip locks and yeah and it's been in my pack for a long time and it's starting to show its we're in a big way I'm actually stop taping it back together now so yeah I got to do something different so make sure whatever you build your kit its robust you know it can survive you know life of your gear inside your pack is hard yeah you know just even if you're not carrying it mine lives in the bed of my truck and that stuff pays a price it's a kind of a harsh environment thank you so I mean that's that's you know that I mean in since we're talking about kits I mean listen it can be a big fire kit like this this is this is pretty big but what I have in here is a 3 inch 4 inch fixed blade knife in here as well so that I can put on small stuff but I know it's not huge you know I'm not batani you know right 3/4 inch 5 inch you know by getting batani and going you know you got to have you have to have a blade on you yes it's a must need tool for the most part yeah fire-starting for getting wood small enough to keep catch fire or carbon feather sticks which is somewhat out of time what I also have in here is a headlamp just a small headlamp yep because once again being in the woods I found it's dark it's dark early you start quick and and it is hard working when you don't have light around yeah and and listen making it making a fire isn't extremely difficult but it's not turning on the stove at your house you know no burning or turning on the barbecue grill and and most of the time what if you're in a if we're just hiking you and I are just hiking yeah hey we got some time to build a fire fine we're hanging out if you're in a survival situation you are cold or wet scared scared stressed need a fire yeah I need a fire now and and then you add darkness to that in like the second log the psychological side of that is already all right you already acknowledged the fact you're lost or maybe you're not acknowledging the fact that I lost yet and your stress levels building and painting can set in yeah and we were talking earlier about the psychological benefits of fire na Mele is our gonna warm you in cook food and process water to make it safe to drink the psychological boost that having that fire going does for you is profound now the other side that coin is when I talked earlier about collecting enough firewood the psychological loss if it goes out yeah it is just as profound and not being able to start one is just as bad as well so make sure that you can get a fire started and make sure you plan to keep that fire going you know if you're in a survival situation and you're sitting around thinking oh I don't have anything to do yeah you do collect firewood that's an ongoing job if you're in a survival situation if you're not collecting food or water or working on your shelter you need to be collecting firewood because you will never have enough yeah you will never have enough there's no such thing as too much yeah you know and then as far as other items that I put in this is something that has has saved me a couple times it's gonna sound so dumb oh here's another your Fresno Mines yeah I was gonna mention those good so so you know it's a magnifying lens yeah I mean yeah you know now they work it's got to be sunlight yeah very bright very bright you know but it'll work but I also keep this is a soda can that I cut up and I've used this more times than I can count because I can stand it up to make a windshield oh yeah windscreen that I can get my fire started I have literally not this one but I have taken my fire-starting kit into my vestibule of my tent because it was raining so much to get the fire till the fire going and then I carried it out on the metal and got it going so I've used this as a windscreen I've used it so many different ways to get a fire started and listen once again it it always feels like we need a third hand yeah so now I have my tender in one hand I have my lighter in the other and I have no way to protect right so now I'm trying to you know put my fire tender on the ground I'm trying to block it with my hand I'm trying to light it with a fire little tiny piece and that's a really good whack and I started with aluminum foil but it's it's too light yeah it's just too light and blow the wind blows it this gives it a little bit sturdier you can actually get it in the ground I've I've even started my fire on these because the ground was so soaking wet that I've started my fire on it and then I just built my fire over it yeah and then in the next morning when it was stopped out and dumped it out and grabbed it yeah throw it back in with you pack it back out which pack has right you know that and then and all of my fire kits I always have duct tape yeah I have duct tape in many it places as much it does two things duct tape is something that I never seen anybody's fire kit ever and and it's something that number one you open it up get the sticky side and stick your tender to it listen magnesium yeah fat wood dust yeah like instant fire whatever if you have any wind at all yeah gone and into like with duct tape like we showed Mike it once before are you on another video I take duct tape and lay it out and I pour this stuff in there yeah nice and thick as much as a little stick and then roll that up a little rubber band around it that's an instant piece of tinder that not only is the magnesium gonna catch and burn but it's gonna set that tape on fire it gives me a little more burn time yeah a little more room for getting my crap together you know yeah so it holds it together and it gives you gives you some some fuel as well to to get a fire going so I always have duct tape in there I always have a windscreen you know that those are some of the things that the hard knocks that I've yeah I've learned yeah when was a big one that's when in water ah and I've even I've even set this thing up as a teepee and started my fire under it because it's been raining here the rain so much I can get it started enough so it's a neat little idea so so you know these are the things that I've learned the hard way and that's part of what I want the university to be it's not just I should hey showing you the cool products what we use it's it's our I would say sucky life experiences that you know I've been enough of those that and in in in future videos we'll actually be doing some of that yeah guys well get out there and some of the crap weather and let's get a shelter up and get a fire going yeah you know yeah so you can see how much fun it is and then we'll do the things where hey you think that a really flat area and that's because it's a riverbed and then when he starts rainy in the middle of the night yeah I thought it's a riverbed not that I've been there before yeah so so I always have that stuff and then insta fire and fat would carry it nons yeah I always have some of the so so that's what Chili's finding my fire kit along with a lighter and you know a spark wheel so so that's what I carry you want to add anything um not not much that I can think of to add right now other than preparing your materials ahead of time that can't be stressed enough um get your Tendo tinder bundle keep it dry yeah if you're in a wet area take your tender put your jacket yes you know carry any about your body heat will dry that out so while you're getting all your stuff together you can collect your tinder bundle bundle up put it inside your jacket and continue your work of getting everything else together processing your wood breaking things down getting them ready so you've got your kindling and your fuel everything's staged out it's all right there then you take your tinder bundle out of last minute get that spark to it get it lit and start building your fire yeah so you're not running around looking for the stuff when the fire is there yeah I mean you've got to have it ready ahead of time yeah and I'll tell you I mean you know we'll pull out the old war stories here I we did like a like a 15 or so mile hike day and we decided hey let's push three more to the next campsite it was in north as on the Appalachian Trail northern North Carolina it was getting cold but we said alright let's do that I have three miles because then it allowed us to do some more mileage the next day we got to this campsite and we didn't know it was kind of a quasi like public campsite a a lot of guys car camping I know there are like people everywhere literally could not find a stick or a twig yeah on the ground yeah because there were 50 other people that were doing the same exact thing so I mean we got in there it was like 6 o'clock at night Sun is going down it's dark and there's no twigs it's like you're in a forest and you can't find a stick on the ground there's no sticks someone went there cleaned up yeah yeah and I mean we literally had to hike like a half a mile to find a dead tree cuz and then had to process it that night so so as far as you know tinder and stuff goes I'll pick up small twigs and stuff and as far as putting em in your get you know if if you're hiking during the day and it's raining everything's gonna be wet at night yes so pick it up in the middle of the day put it in your jacket pockets pants pockets whatever it might be and let that stuff start drying let's talk about home fire you know survival situation at home it's wintertime you know we need to keep a fire going I mean I would say first of all as far as processed firewood it needs a couple months to dry out yeah I mean I keep a big stack like I'm going camping next weekend I told you one of the things I'm doing is I'm loading up a bunch of my wood the thing to my trailer I'm just taking it with me that way I know when I get to this campground because like you said it's a pub that's a state campground I'm not out there trying to make sure I have wood I'm taking it with me yeah but yeah you need to think ahead if if a potential for having to heat your home or cook over fires is anywhere remotely possible in your scenarios plan ahead get a pile of wood I mean it's easy to do like in Florida right now down here you can get firewood every other yeah because that's a storm there's trees down everywhere but it's stacked all over size Road you just stop them loaded up yeah take it home pile it up and let it let it cure because green wood is tough to burn yeah yeah it's not gonna burn nearly as hot nearly as long so you know you definitely want to give it a couple months if you're if you're processing wood the commercial fire logs you know that you can buy at the store Home Depot as far as in a fireplace at home they're a fantastic start they're good speakers you can get a little bit wetter wood on it that's not completely dry and those things get hot enough it there are a lot of the products that we have on the table built into a log yeah what I do there's things I'll buy those fire logs and I take my axe and I'll take a chunk off the end of it about like that like that in the fireplace and then build my fire on top of it cuz then I can throw bigger stuff on there I'm not having to try to start it too small in to work up if I want to fire the fireplace just for the no niceness of a fire in the house yeah I'll start with that and just put on bigger stuff to get it going but you know keep that stuff on hand have it's you know when you need it's not the time to be looking for it that goes really this stuff we're talking about and I will say you know end with if you find yourself in a dire situation gravitate towards a camping stove a backpacking stove if you got a butane stove I mean that's the hottest fire I mean it's a blue flame yeah that if you got to get your hands warm if your core temperature has gone to nothing I mean grab a Mylar blanket or something to wrap up and get that thing started yeah because I mean that's the flick of a switch yeah or the strike of a lighter well and going and we're going to be talking about stoves on and a video on food here soon and I think everybody should carry a stove personally now I know a lot of people say oh I don't want a stove or and they're bug-out bags and well there's only so much fuel and it only lasts so long so there's I'm taking it well the sense of taking it is for there's times when you're cold wet you can't get a fire going and you need to warm up so you've got a stove and a pot and you're like so your water bottle you can light your stove put a pot of water on get a boil and keep your hands around it for a warm soon as there's hot pour it in the water bottle sticking your jacket yeah no more putting your sleeping bag at night you know it'll help warm you back up I think everybody should carry one and I know a lot of guys don't because they say the fuel will run out well then when the fuel runs out you know throw the empty fuel can wait hang on the stove you never know you might find another one or you can cannibalize it for other stuff later but but I think everybody should carry one and maybe they're so small day someone we got a couple different ones we'll show in another video but I think everybody is you can put everybody's kid so guys that's gonna wrap it up here for a fire make sure you comment below questions you know comments whatever you might have comment on Chris's beard you know always make sure you do that yeah I am so and you know we'll get to your questions we'll make sure they're answered and probably put in you know what you carry what you like as far as your eyes because this is this isn't just us pitching stuff out you know this is the survival dispatch community and that's what we want we want community input we want know what you guys are doing how you do things hear your ideas stuff we didn't think of but obviously we didn't mention everything Ireland there's all kinds of we talk about yeah but you know this is a good rundown on how to get started and some basics and again we'll do some videos on actually getting out and building the fires there's a lot of people that can't build fire weather damage you know and you know you need to know how to build a fire to get a fire going so we'll cover that so guys stay safe we'll see you next time until next time guys [Music] you
