today I want to respond to a question that I get daily I get an email I get a lot of questions in the comments people asked me Curtis where do you get your 1 inch deep 10 by 20 micro green flaps and I the same answer every time I kept from an old-school company locally that has a Salesman the drawers aren't in a van and they don't have a website but if you're curious they're called the professional gardener the companies out of Calgary but they have a sales rep in Kelowna I'm not kidding they don't sell online so I don't really have an answer for people next step I have now recently discovered something better these flats these are 11 by 22 inches and they're strong as can be I think they'll last you a lifetime they're the flats from the paper pot transplanter so it just started to do microgreens in these flap but there's so many things about them that I love I'll show you how strong they are in a second but one thing I love about them immediately it's how it will they're very rigid and they they stay true to their shape because they're so rigid they fit together really well they stack really well whereas these things you can see how fluffy they are when they have soil in them these things are completely rigid so it's an amazing product and I'm actually starting to use the drop cedar and seeding plate to seed my microgreens with them but I still have some experimentation to do there with the what densities I can plant out and whatnot so that is your standard 1021 inch deep flat you can see how flimsy they are even if you just put it on the table they pretty much you know they'll crack they always break on the corners they they really you can get one good season out of out of them and then if you use them the next season you have to sometimes double them up you just have to add two to get any sort of consistent rigidity that it doesn't break these guys so they're just a little bit bigger here's eyes in comparison there's one just fitting inside of the paper pot flap so you can see there's a little bit bigger it's about 20% more in square inches so I add 20% more with all of my feed densities so again see how these just Bend and flex like that like nothing these there's they're so rigid like you can really lean on them on the table and they won't break so these these will last a lifetime you know they are more expensive I buy these for about $3 apiece these are 650 apiece but they last a lifetime so I've probably bought close to a thousand of these in my career farming because summits so many of them end up being garbage where these I can pretty much just buy what I need and have them for life I'm going to find five plots of basil and I'm going to use the drop cedar and this thing you need to have different sizes to do certain microgreens but the one seed densities that have got dialed in right now that I'm happy with the result of is basil so I'm going to do five lots of basil with this and you'll see how fast this will this might revolutionize doing microgreens so we need to get a different size seed plates to do the variety of variety microgreens that we're doing so of course this isn't going to work for your wet seed which is your pee and sunflower because they just you have to spread the seed on it they're too big to go through something like this but that's okay those microgreens go fairly fast compared to the dry seed microgreen where I'm normally just sprinkling the seed on the platform and I'll continue doing until I have figured out all of the proper densities but I'm just going to show you some basil because I think it's pretty cool so I'm going to do five plots just press the plots out right now I'm using the same amount of soil in a 1020 as I do in one of these I've got a different size press board for these flaps of course because they're different size now water before I plant there's my basil take my drops Cedar clothing above the drop cedar it has this part on the bottom where there's no holes that's where you can up all your seed get it down like that spread it over spread it back is one done there's two dumb there's four done now that's what that basil looks like when it grows really even density I like the fact that there the seed is in little clumps I find that gives more airflow underneath it or not she is helping prevent mold problems thing I really love about these flaps is that there's a little bit of a lip with the amount of soil and put it on and the way that flaps it on top of one another they actually don't touch the soil which for basil is great because in the past I've been putting vermiculite on my basil so that I can stack my flaps and then the then the vermiculite is in contact at the bottom of the flat on top of it but with the basil or with what I'm doing right now with these flaps they have these little pieces these little edges here so when they go on top of another plot there's actually no soil contact so it's creating ellika 1 or 2 millimeter germination cushion in there and I'm getting really really nice even germination with no mold at all and the cool thing about it too because there's no weight on the soil I can stack more flats when I have in the top because there's not that pressure directly on the soil and when you do that you really have to be careful when you uncover it you leave them too long you'll get these big chunks of raw disease and with these that hasn't been happening at all so that Basil's good to stock you'll notice that I'm still doing my pee and sunflower in the 1020 it's just because I don't have enough of these new flats yet to bother I have a huge abundance of these so you know because I'm planting 40 right now in the summer i'm planting 40p in sunflower week which is less than we do in the winter so that means that I need to have at least 80 at any given time because I'll have two crops on the shelf at once so I just don't have enough of these at the moment but in time I'll be replacing all of my micro green flats with these because they're just so much further superior okay so I prepared for more flats and I just want to plant these ones by hand and just in comparison to show you the difference in speed there's to keep in mind here there's also human error like I if I sprinkle a little bit too much in one area then I'm like that might cause mold problems because there's too many feeds laying on top of one another so with good technique you can do this relatively easily I mean I've been doing it for so many years I'm probably faster than most people at it but there's still the chance for human error and I think this is where that plate the seed plates really going to come in handy so right now we only have a few different feed plate sizes but we're in the process of getting a bunch more because I really want to see this microgreens thing take off but I would like to do all of my microgreens with the seed plate because then it would just be that much faster so those are the ultimate 1 inch deep microgreens lot for future reference if you ask me where I get them paper pot Co is where these come from you can buy a case of 10 for 650 plus shipping and I think they'll last a lifetime I'm going to continue experimenting with them it's a killer killer product I'm very excited about it we'll talk to you guys later [Music]
