The Humble pushu it's been around for a crazy long time now there's a lot of different versions of the pushu but for the most part its function has remained the same today we're going to see if we can change [Music] that [Music] one of the biggest problems I have in my shop and I'm sure many of you have the same issue as finding a push stick when I need one so I decided I was going to take some scrapwood and make a whole bunch of them now I don't do small projects very often so when I get a chance to use my nicer hardwood scraps I use them up I cut a bunch of templates on my CNC kept a couple for myself and the rest were to give away as gifts once I had those cut out I could use that to Mark out the sizes I need of my scrap wood to glue them up now one of the things I wanted to be really careful about is making sure I had some cross lamination I didn't want all the grain going in One Direction CU that would make for a weak handle so I have vertical grain and then cross grain where the handle part is so CU I have a lot of power there and once I had that all figured out the rest of it was pretty much standard templating and [Music] routing [Music] a [Music] before we jump further into today's video let's do a little bit of definition so this right here is called a push sck this right here is called a push shoe it's called a push shoe because it has a sole just like a shoe that shoe or the sole of the shoe goes on the material this is a push youe this is a push steak and then there's push blocks but I don't have one of those now on the bottom of our push shoes you're always going to find this m material this is cork rubber we cut it into strips like this use some carpet tape and then attach it on there making sure to roll it on nice and strong we get this material from incline.db stick even more stable to do that I needed a way to be able to secure that stick in here at different lengths to do that I simply drilled a hole in the back of the push stick over on a drill press and then I used a tap to thread it out that tap matches the threads on this 38 bolt now for the head I cut out some more pieces on the CNC and I was able to just epoxy these in place so that made it very secure and I had a bigger knob with a little bit more torquing power to secure these down so I made another template like this so it's basically just the push you without the handle and then I added those holes now in this case I glued two pieces of those sticks those Square sticks to the side so they'll fit right in to there a functionally letting me make this push youe as wide as I want it and to lock it in place all I have to do is add the knob and that second one I put that there for support and be honest it's not really needed I could have done it with just one hole but that second hole hole gives us some more [Music] options so as you just saw that leaves this piece sticking out over the blade which is really not a problem there's more than an inch there between the base of the shoe and the bottom of that little crossmember so as long as you leave the in the blade an inch below you're perfectly fine doing that and the nice thing about this is it offers a lot more stability and it puts the pressure right where you want it past that halfway mark the other advantage to a format like this is I can add a third piece to the outside and lock that in place and then I could also add a secondary piece for stability that comes down here now what that does is it gives me some options so if I have a thin piece and I want some more stability on the outside I can lower this I can cut with a blade in between here this gives me more stability on the outside as this rides across the top of the tabl slop [Music] fence using a square for those pieces that go through it ended up being a really stable way of holding those pieces so I experimented with lots of things like just using one stick going through or one pieces of wood going through the hole and it was really stable and that led me down another train of thought what if I didn't want 6 in of this wood can of leave it over the blade what could I do to make it shorter but still have the adjustability and being able to just use one hole at a time made a lot of sense so I can use a 3-in piece here and a 3-in piece on this side as well so I can increase the width even more which gives me more stability on pieces that are wider now at some point someone's going to say well at that wide you could just use your hand and you can if that's your thing for me it's much more comfortable to have my hand up off the material and as far away from the blade as possible so I can adjust this to many widths now the one thing I really like this for is resawing on the band saw the other thing I like it for is the shaper that gives me a lot of area that I'm covering and pressure that really keeps the material held down well thing this lets me do is pull this side off so I can get right up against the fence and I still have support out here where I want it if I'm cutting something a little bit narrower and then just being able to take these things off really rapidly back to a normal push stick that's really cool this is super handy to use it's very adjustable and I can accessorize it as I'm going along which I'm really enjoying now I know a lot of you are thinking there's a push blocks out there that you can move stuff around on and I'm not picking on micro drg or anybody else I'm going to have to ask you guys to use your imagination for a minute because I don't have a I don't have a push Block in my shop but it's a block so the width is not really adjustable you are stuck with this fixed width now you can adjust the center one on it and I think the newer ones you can do some adjustments on the side but for me I want something that I can rapidly adjust to lots of different thicknesses or widths or be able to take apart and just use the regular push you really rapidly I don't want to spend a lot of a Time adjusting and then guessing and making sure that I'm not going to hit the blade I can see through this so I can see for sure where that blade is going I got to tell you guys I am loving this format this made a whole lot of sense to me it's easily adjustable you can get it as thick or as thin as you want it so you and you're not stuck with everything on here you can take it off really rapidly the one thing that I don't like about it is that to adjust it on this to adjust this one I have to adjust a knob here and here and do that and over here I have to adjust two knobs as well to get it all right so it got me thinking what if I could adjust the thickness with just one knob instead of having all these different knobs around that I had to play with and make it even faster and that led me down a really interesting [Music] path [Music] [Music] [Music] so with just one knob I can adjust this out to 5 1/2 in wide just like that and I can easily rip material down to a/ in wide this just made a whole lot of sense to me it's super rapid to adjust and at this thickness it's an inch and 3/4 wide and I can take this piece off really quickly if I'm doing a bunch of stuff that's inch and 3/4 or 2 in and don't want to cut into here I think on the next version I'll make this so it just lifts up further so I don't have to worry about taking it off but I am really proud of this design it just made a whole lot of sense it's super fast and I don't have anything sticking out way over the edge the problem with this is it's a little bit trickier to build and it has to be done right whether it's this version right here with its rapid adjustability being able to take things on and off as easy and as fast as you want leaving you with a regular pushup Sho or adding them back on for safety or my rapid adjustment version both of these have taken the push you to a level that I think makes a lot of sense now I don't have a build video on this I did this off camera now that know that I know that it works really well I'm going to make a couple different versions of it play with it for a while and then if you guys are interested I'll come back with either a plan set or maybe we'll even take this one to Market regardless I really appreciate your time I hope you learned something and if you're interested in this let me know down in the comment section below I'd love to hear your thoughts on what you think about these versions of the pushu and until the next time we'll see you in the next [Music] video
