i actually really like this theory. not sure about the whole AI is a villain thing but the nanobots are definitely plausible

An A.I. being the one responsible is most definitely what the author is going for, as it represents one of the latest and most important advancements in modern science. Coupled with the emergent field of nanorobotics, which would definitely see a huge leap in the almost 20 years of difference from our current time to the manga's (set in the year 2037 before the petrification), at the very least in private and/or secret research, this theory is looking to be pretty close to true.

Perhaps a high-end A.I. prototype, first of its kind, was being used to speed up the research into medical nanorobot technology, with its directive being "save humans & protect the planet", then it went out of control (who knows, maybe one of the researchers assisted it) and settled on "saving" humans by preserving them in stone w/ the nanomachine procedure (which also completely heals them once/if undone), then the planet was "protected" by extension, since humans couldn't do any more harm to it.

EDIT: Also, I bet Senku's biological father and Byakuya's friend has something to do with it.

An actually reasonable theory? you know when matpat's actually interested in his work.

As someone who knows Matpat is usually wrong, yet still very entertaining, I'm actually SURE his team is correct with this one. Don't watch it if you don't want probably spoilers.

I don't think we can necessarily assume an explosive level of Nital concentration. Yes it's 30% cave nitric acid to 70% Alcohol ... but that's with stone age levels of purity for both. The alcohol has been distilled but only to the level of brandy not pure ethanol - it's still clearly red when poured. And the cave nitric acid goes through (charcoal, I think) filtering but no concentration.

The idea of Nanobots is compelling but I think if this is the case I think it might make more sense if the green light in both cases is just the "activation signal" for these nanomachines rather than an actual physical dispersal of them and they'd been quietly dispersed throughout the world a couple of days ahead of time.

I don't buy the "AI antagonist" theory though. Yes, it's probably automatic but an automated response to a radio signal is hardly AI level technology. Any faction that could have created the petrification beam could have also created an automated response system. The AI theory also doesn't really account for the healing effects of petrification - I think that makes more sense if someone took a prototype medical technology and weaponized it which subjectively sounds more human factiony since the AI could have probably just developed nanobots itself. An AI is still definitely a possibility of course but it's just one possibility among many.

My pet theory for the why signal though is that it's not the antagonist at all. The actual antagonist is destroying technological civilizations when they arise and a survivor of the last civilization set up this signal as a warning - they got destroyed after they started broadcasting radio and the antagonists noticed so the survivor set up this response system to try and freak the new civilization out and get them to stop broadcasting.

There was post apocalyptic scifi tv series with a similar premise to dr stone, it was called revolution. About a world wide blackout that left humanity without electricity. It was cancelled before they gave the answer for the blackout but it was later revealed that it was caused by nanomachines that were everywhere on earth that sucked all electricity from machines and can be deactivated with a special key.

This is excellent, nanotechnology would be something that even when they get the β€œpetrification weapon”, there won’t be a way to understand it or reverse engineer it with the level of technology they have... in fact, even if we came across such item with the current level of technology humanity has, it would take a lot of effort to find out what it is.
