The most important detail in this is one that people might not pick up on because it goes by so fast. Edwards he says he was given the opportunity to make something small, about $90,000 -- but made it look like $250,000 because of his skill in VFX. It's a small thing, but this is the key to building a sustainable career as a creative. Take what you're given, and make it look like more. That's where the skill of being any sort of creative lies, because it works on any budget level. If you've got $1,000 then you'll be successful if you can make it look like $5,000 -- just like if you can make $250,000 make like $2.5MM. If you can replicate this every time, that's a skill that is very valuable to the film industry.
God that was a riveting watch. Really inspiring, but not in a trite way or anything, and packed with so many neat anecdotes. Loved the bit about Scarif haha.
Wow. Great video, thanks! I remember obsessing over "Monsters" when I was in film school :P So cool seeing how his story has evolved as a filmmaker.
I don't usually like these talks, as they often don't come across as honest or in any way insightful for aspiring creatives, but this was very different. This felt a lot more relatable, even down to the way he addressed getting into SXSW. He didn't just brush it off as "so we got into SXSW and..." like other talks I've seen.
If anyone is checking the comments before watching, I'd highly recommend watching/listening to this if you're an aspiring director, or just a creative who feels that they're in a bit of a slump. It could really help, in ways you don't expect it to.
That was a great talk. Very inspiring. It truly is a great time to be a filmmaker.
Truly insightful stuff, more than anything else. Honestly he makes it sound "too easy" but I guess it's all in your head in the end.
The part were he talks about fear, well that was an eye opener!
