[Music] morning everybody welcome back to the homestead today I'm going to make some fermenting pills for fermenting the chicken feed so right now I have to buy the organic uh grains started off with layer pellets and and U Mash when I first got the chickens but only at first until I got the bulk of the chicken so now we're up to 10 hens and one rooster four of the hens are old enough to lay and they've just started laying and then the rest of them probably going to be another 2 to 3 months before they start laying but I want to get them on organic feed now so they're producing eggs that we that uh we feel good about eating and part of that is to ferment grains now so goat organic grains but really in preparation for all the feed that I'm producing in the garden all the seeds and Grains um I want to ferment that so basically I'm going to keep rotation of three going at a time so some of them will be actually sprouted some will be fermented so I can show you in future video what the difference is between the two but basically what I'm going to do with these Pals is drill drainage holes in each of two of the buckets and then put the seeds in there and then put that bucket into this bucket with water in the bucket that that I can keep changing so b b I'll show you I'm going to drill the hole put seeds in here this in this bucket that's full of water leave it for a day or half a day pull it out drain the water put fresh water in there keep doing that for probably 2 days on average you can go as little as 24 hours but I like to ferment or Sprout completely it just increases the nutrition so it maximizes the amount of nutrients I'm going to get from the grains that I'm spending all this time and money and Space drawing it's a 1/8 drill bit it's the smallest drill bit that I have so a few of the grains will be able to go through there but most of them [Applause] won't these are some chickpeas that we spread it over this will be day three for these carbano beans I guess people call them so these are actually chickens have been eating them they love them they go crazy for them but also that's ready to be planted as well so what I'm doing with these buckwheat actually buckwheat seeds that's to plant in the food plot around the cabin for the deer so that's something they're going to eat during the summer the deer are going to eat during the summer but mainly what I'm trying to do is just build start building the soil not really ready the whole clearing is not finished but I'd like to get the soil starting to get improved so I don't want to miss this growing season so by planting buckwheat I can get a lot of green Mass growing and then just knock that down or let it die in the fall and then it'll add to the organic matter in the top of the soil as it decomposes but the deer will EAD it to and hopefully like it happened in the actual Garden around the cabin is that the seeds mature drop and then they're sitting in the ground in the seed bag for the following year then they'll pop up and uh produce another crop next spring so so the reason I want to soak these though is I want to pre germinate them because I'm late for getting these in the ground they're growing fast here but I had them in a week or week and a half ago and we've had a decent amount of rain since then unfortunately after today or tomorrow we have a dry spell coming so it's not the best time to be planting especially in a forest where there's animals to consume the seeds but if I can pre-s Sprout them or at least soak them then they'll have a good amount of moisture to get started and hopefully we get a you know rain another several days or a week after I get them in the ground so they continue to grow without vesicating without drying out I'm going to soak these for a couple of days and then get them back into the food plot probably 2 days from now [Applause] [Applause] because it's fermenting you want that gas to escape so I'm just going to PP some holes in the lid here [Music] too if there's a risk of bugs getting in then it's better to put like a cheesecloth and I could still do that put a cheesecloth um covering on there maybe even set the lid Loosely on top that would stop any insects from getting through maybe these small holes probably not going to be too much of an issue depending on where I keep these oh
