[Music] this time high above las vegas a battle is on i'm hungry i have nothing more than this this has to work for me an elite crew take on the elements the gust of wind can blow you out then drops you and you body slam into the building pushing as hard as they can to stay on schedule i gotta be smarter than the banner man come on and putting their bodies on the line to get the job done i don't want to die today this crew take on the jobs no one else can their goal to be the number one rope access team in las vegas you couldn't pay me enough to do that i'm scared just looking at them down here they climb where no one else dares it's exciting like when you get to a spot and you're like no man has ever been here before attempting the impossible every time they go to work i don't make it tell my children i love them the most terrifying jobs in the world call for sky high scrapers las vegas every gleaming building seeks to stand out from the crowd as designs become ever more complex so does the job of cleaning and maintaining these towering structures ken pipissar wants to tackle this problem head-on taken vegas by storm with his team of rope access technicians vegas is made for rope access with shapes of the buildings at the glass the towers the angles for our skilled rope access technician that's exactly what they're looking for as it is for us it is it is we've just landed in heaven it's great opportunity for our company this crew take on the jobs others deemed too dangerous or too difficult to even attempt [Music] their motto any job any height any building now ken is risking everything to make it big in vegas our biggest goal here is to really make an impression on vegas good god i mean we could take over the town apsilon's assault in vegas starts here just off the glittering strip the 600 million dollar panorama towers a luxury apartment complex where residents pay a fortune for unparalleled views of the city and expect spotless windows ken has won a contract to clean all ten thousand panes of glass on the two skyscrapers it could make or break the company's expansion into vegas that is freaking big crew boss ricky dillman is ken's right-hand man he's planning to become one of the best rope access technicians in the business it's exciting like when you get to a spot and you're like no man has ever been here before you know i'm here with a couple pieces of ropes and nylon so that's pretty exciting today rick's second in command is sam shannon a born rock climber he's completed some of the most challenging climbs in america i've got something wrong with me you get me more than 30 feet off the ground i start grinding like an idiot so i'm happy but sam's only got five months experience as a rope access technician he's got a lot to learn from ricky rick's been doing rope access for five six seven years or something he only knows a whole lot and i learn a lot from him we get along really well um i don't know he told me when he first met me at the airport in phoenix a few months ago that he had a pretty good feeling almost immediately here we go guys what do you think i think it's a whole hell of a lot of glass panorama towers is a massive job on a high profile building cleaning every window will take two months but the crew won't be on site every day the plan is to fit in other shorter jobs as they come up today is their first on the job to stay on track they need to clean 300 windows by sundown for this they need the weather to cooperate did you check the forecast this morning rick i did and they're calling for up to 30 mile an hour wind gusts today and it's going to start in the early afternoon with a 130 meter structure to scale down strong winds are the last thing the team need if the wind gets over 25 miles an hour we cannot work because it is not safe a gust of wind can blow you out 15 20 30 feet from the building or more then the wind drops you and you body slam into the building just because i got a good feeling that the wind is not going to allow us to go all the way down and finish the drop today i just want everybody to stay right next to each other if you gotta wait for anybody then wait for anybody so that when the wind does pick up and we gotta get the heck out of there that we have a nice even stopping point trainees javier santana and eugene kuzmin are the junior members of the team to stay on schedule the four-man crew need to work together pooling knowledge and experience to get the job done today sam javier and eugene must each clean three windows in every one of the towers 33 floors there is nothing they can do about the weather so it's vital they concentrate on the parts of the job they can control the most important is making sure their ropes are correctly rigged their lives depend on it hey rick what's up i'm not super happy with this uh with this belay line i think we should have enough we may be able to run it all the way up on top of the elevator shaft we got more anchors up top there what if if i do an offset uh or you can do some crazy level three rope access black magic for us everybody's role i mean safety is everyone's responsibility we double check each other we're human we make human mistakes more sets of eyes is better each rope consists of an inner nylon spine called a kern covered by an outer sheath wear and tear means the crew must check the sheath on a daily basis we check ropes daily i mean i coil over a thousand feet of rope a day i inspect uh over a thousand feet of rope for each guy so sometimes that's four thousand feet of rope um sometimes five thousand feet and you know every time i send a line down over the edge that's runs through my hands i don't wear gloves i've got calluses to deal with the friction and the rope is running through my hands i can feel a bad spot in there and i'll stop and pull it back up and inspect it if i see a bad spot dude double check on yourself clipped in with an asap clipped in with an id edge protection is in place got extra edge protection got what i need to actually work with kit sorted it's time for the most terrifying part of every job going over the edge i don't make it tell my children i love them and we are working going over the edge is probably the scariest part that's it gets me every time it never you know i'm not comfortable still with it you know it gives you the the butterflies in the stomach the adrenaline rush you know but that's what keeps me going that's what is going to keep everyone safe is that that initial fear going over the edge you know you're double checking your gear your equipment you're making sure your buddies are safe the crew has five hours to complete the day's window quota but ricky will have to keep a close eye on the weather sam we got 15 miles an hour winds up here 15 up there yep so we're good we're still in the clear yeah i mean it's less down here i think we're definitely on the leeward side but we will keep an eye on it if the wind shifts round it will end the day's work not a gambling man but i'd put 20 bucks on it that the wind is going to pick up within an hour and we'll have to bail out with 10 000 panes of glass to clean it's a delay they can ill afford 130 meters above the las vegas strip an elite team of rope access technicians is cleaning windows on the 33-storey panorama towers their goal is 300 windows for the day they're less than halfway through and the desert winds are picking up the wind is the only thing that scares me gust of wind can blow you out 15 20 30 feet from the building or more then the wind drops you and you body slam into the building at the moment the building is shielding the team from the wind but the forecast predicts it will shift round it's only a matter of time before it hits them but right now the biggest threat to sam shannon and the crew comes not from the weather but the building itself that is a sharp sharp edge that wants to cut my line and i don't want that to happen every single one of these window sills like right above me where that black pipe is is a very very very sharp edge that will cut your rope if you're not careful to combat the problem the crew use a rope protector this is basically a standard rope protector it's got a little sling on it so i connect it to my line above me i say i've got a sharp edge right here that i want to protect i'm going to hang it on my rope so this is over the edge my ropes go inside of the edge protector but because these edges are so sharp it cuts through even this if this fails now my ropes are exposed to danger my ropes are in danger of cutting so sam and the team have improved on it what we've come up with what's going to be better is just a basic rough prototype right now is a rigid piece of pvc pipe and the ropes go inside of it and it's a vast improvement over the traditional rope guard that's what we use to make sure the lines stay safe and everybody goes home to their family tonight the trusting the gear you know just putting the faith and the gear that you have on you yeah once you get over the edge once you get in that work mode and you start to get comfortable and talk with your your co-workers and kind of make jokes and stuff go as you're going down the building that's that's where it gets comfortable things look differently from the ground got out of my truck and i saw some ropes hanging on the side of this wall and i look up and hear these guys are 100 200 feet up cleaning windows no scaffolding just hanging on ropes it was bizarre it blew my mind people they look up at us and they freak out they get scared they don't understand what's going on but for us it's normal one guy is completely horizontal with his feet on the side of the building hanging straight out right now as we speak you couldn't pay me enough to do that i'm scared just looking at him down here for the absalom crew hanging off a rope a 100 meters up is just another day at the office and banter helps pass the time my special technique for washing windows is apply a lot of pressure use a lot of dry rags all those fails talk dirty to it yeah that works too the dirtier the window washer the cleaner the window yes sir the pressure is on to get this job right across the state line in phoenix arizona husband and wife team ken and renee need every job to go well if they are to fulfill their ambition to grow the business i started the company as just a one-man show cleaning windows for some elderly folks and i would be on my hands and knees thinking it's not going to be like this for long renee is the company president and looks after the books always worrying about them i worry about them every day it's scary to think of them up in those ropes and how high it is can is responsible for getting new business and running their team of 11 employees i'm hungry i have nothing more than this this has to work for me i care about building this business into something major and that's why we have the name absalon usa i believe that someday we will be a national company [Music] to make this happen every job counts after several hours of steady progress the crew has cleaned nearly 200 windows but the wind has just hit them you can see it's really windy right now extremely see the flag about three quarters of a mile away on top of the rio that's well over 25 miles an hour oh i would say it's probably i don't know 20 25 miles an hour right now it's bad timing as the team scale down their ropes become longer making them much more vulnerable to being smashed against the side of the building you know but it is a very uneasy feeling when you uh get pushed away from the building and you know it's not you doing it so it kind of makes you uh second guess your rigging and everything that you're attached to it's not worth the risk ricky orders the crew to make a rapid descent to the ground we just put away the squeegees and we get the heck out of there [Music] knowing that it was windy up on top of the parapet knowing that the wind is blowing on all other three sides of the building we're scared nervous all well it ends well and now it's lunch lunchtime there are a hundred windows short of their target and we usually um err on the side of a side of caution and you know and get a lot more done with a with a full crew with a couple of guys that didn't make it home that day the shortfall will have to be made up next week [Music] next day is saturday with no work scheduled ricky and sam are off climbing they're heading to red rock canyon a world-class climbing site just 25 kilometers from the city from monday to friday ricky is the boss but today the roles are reversed sam is a far more experienced rock climber ricky is this student rick knows a little bit about climbing and it's similar enough to rope access that he's got a pretty good foundation already it's nice to be able to take him out on the rocks and get to be the one who's driving the bus to get a climb in they will need a little luck we just check the weather check the weather before we go to bed check the weather first thing we wake up check the weather throughout the day get forecasts you know thank god for for smartphones and things and just keeping an eye out climbing in a storm can be deadly rain makes the rocks slippery and worse climbers are exposed to lightning that's the issue that's the issue that's the issue right now we're good so it could rain like a sun we're out here and it's windy we're trying to trying to go climbing in between a break in the window i'm going climbing let's go the red rock climb is tricky 40 meters of sheer rock face will push ricky to the limit i'm a little nervous i'm definitely a little nervous but i think if i trust the gear and i trust sam my partner he should be able to help me through it right now the clouds are holding off the weather is clear enough to start the climb all right good to go good harness good device good harness good not gonna die not today to help build ricky's confidence sam sets up a safety line by screwing a series of cams going up the face of the rock and running a rope for it it's going to be great you'll see but even this isn't straightforward the clip holding the safety rope has pulled out broke of the rod edge of the rock sam laughs it off but if this happens higher up the consequences could be far more serious [Music] sweet take it up tight rick yeah no it's nice to come out here with rick or whatever you know same with working with him i show him little different things he shows me different things we learn from each other um that'll be good on down please with the route set out it's time for ricky to step up we already tested our harnesses i got a good grigri you're the man i'm the hand all right climbing rock and roll [Music] ricky starts the ascent under sam's watchful eye [Music] so i don't want to clip it on the locker right i'm losing yeah you want to clip the the uh aider directly in to the string like the highest point so either like to the strap okay i mean you can tell too like when you can give up three inches and just clip into the [ __ ] it's already clipped through both ends of the strap but in general you want to clip your clip your steps as high as possible okay clip in your other set all right trust the gear right trust the gear do i want to screw any of these gates at first he makes steady progress once you get you know into the climb it's just like work you know you get into work mode and it's just you drown out everything that's going on around you you focus on what's right in front of you in your next move and what's ahead but it doesn't take much to unnerve him god damn it [Applause] rick's feet are supported in stirrups and the left one has become tangled with his weight fully on it the stirrup gives way he was binding with the other walker yeah yeah yeah your mind gets ahead of you it starts to think about you know different scenarios and what ifs and how is the piece going to fail and you're going to fall this is the old rope that we have is it going to snap that's sketchy man all i'm honest those two cams got the two cams and the third that you're clipped into directly where oh sam's reassurance is calm ricky but he faces a much bigger threat holy [ __ ] look at that yeah let's hope it keeps blowing the way it's been blowing i don't know i don't want to die today you're not gonna i had other things to do i don't want to die with you amen you want down you're drying no i mean but look at it come dude i do not want to get stormed out i mean it's moving fast towards us yeah we should probably yeah you're gonna be here ricky's caution avoids a dangerous situation they make it to the shelter of the cave just in time ricky and sam head back to the city on monday the team start a new job at the university of nevada and it's their most challenging yet sam you need to fix this issue now all right one more time and i'm gonna come down there and take over okay because we gotta move we gotta get this done ricky dillman and his crew are trying to establish themselves as the number one rope access crew in las vegas today they start a job at the university of nevada's football stadium applying the final crucial touches for the first game of the season it's such a tough job ricky has called in operations manager mike duran mike's been working on ropes for three and a half years and has proved himself a natural i feel like i found something that i love to do and i i enjoy coming to work every day another you can be up this high and be totally calm and you're meant to be this high up in the air and doing what we do mike is based in phoenix and he'll stay at the crew house while he's in town all right home sweet second home it's another day i'm back in vegas i haven't really had no down time out here every time i'm out here it's go go go and then i'm back off to phoenix it's vegas you know it's another place for us to work and to you know show what we can do and try to make some money that's really what we're here for you know it's nothing else it could be freaking it could be out there in the boondocks it don't matter as long as we're making money i don't care where it's at jocelyn my wife you know she's you know she's there back home with my son and it's always kind of that's always kind of a a tricky situation so you know if i got to be away from my family i better be making me some money it's three days to the first game of the season the stadium managers want the crew to replace two giant banners and install a firework display at the top of the floodlights we're down the last couple of days before game day and so these big banners which is kind of a focal piece everybody coming into the stadium right now you know they're advertising a whole different event which is not something we want up there how are the banners put up are they like uh stable in place it's a screw-over cover so there's a back plate and then the front plate screws on top of it so it's pinched in but in between do you have the banner on site or something that you guys picked up yet no we're waiting on that to show up perfect sounds good [Music] this job will be tight for time and over running isn't an option the new banners have to be in place before the game ricky and the crew need to be ready to fit them the moment they arrive but first they have to remove the old ones for this the crew will be suspended from ropes 30 meters above a concrete pavement falling that far is unthinkable so their first task is to find a solid anchor point for the ropes i mean you could see there's some temporary anchors lightweight anchors here for probably banners stuff like that it's definitely not meant for a five thousand pound load sure you definitely can't drill into this i mean it's a soft there's nothing underneath i would say we have to come from the back side and rig to this you know some of the structural steel and bring it up and over with the game fast approaching they don't have much time mike's plan is to anchor the ropes to structural steel on the floor below and run lines up over the roof and down the outside of the building you know all the structural beams that we got pretty pretty solid we had a couple here and a couple there i think our best bet is to come off of these beans the columns and the beams yeah but there's a problem a large awning is in the way we have this big old awning or whatever it is here so we can't just tie a line here and run it straight up there because what's going to happen our roads will be caught to solve the problem mike will have to rig the ropes so they go around the awning we have to improvise a little bit and what we do is we'll use structural anchorage we'll run a line off of here and there so it basically turns our building here what we're standing on into one giant anchor system it's a rigging nightmare and it's slowing them down the spider web ropes everywhere which if there's a spider web and it looks confusing that we're doing our job [Music] it takes all morning to rig the lines each crew member will be attached by two 11 millimeter thick orange ropes rated to over 3 000 kilograms one is the primary line that will carry their weight the second a safety backup while ricky and mike go over the edge it'll be down to sam and javier to ensure the lines don't become tangled we're all there for a reason we're running safety up there they're running safety down here so we all got a job to do we take proper safety measures and you know we're not out here to goof off and see who's the bravest rock climber or anything else like that we're here to eliminate all the risks you know so there's no no kudos for being a bold rope tech with a safety rope system attached and everything double checked ricky and mike are ready it's time to put the untried rigging system to the ultimate test ricky makes good progress using a power drill but mike only has a hand powered ratchet screwdriver the crew had no way of knowing how many screws they would need to remove i had to put a couple hundred screws down there a ratchet screwdriver is really no way to tie it off and without still being able to utilize the screwdriver and so it's just a lot of a lot of pressure on your arm and your hand your muscles you know i was just cranking away at that screwdriver trying to keep up with ricky who had the drill so it's a little bit we're down to the finishing uh finish the screws here here as soon as he pops that one it'll be free and we can lower it down it is free and it's free my friend that's what we wanted so now banner's been successfully removed it's on our rope up here and what we're gonna do is we're just gonna lower it down you know if something happens out there and those guys were to give way i mean this is a pretty heavy banner it could you know just the weight of the banner itself could fall and just if it hits you it'll be kind of it could be kind of dangerous this job is the crew's first at the university with over 90 buildings and three stadiums on campus they hope it could become a regular customer so keeping the client happy is an added pressure we're impressed that's moving along really well and i'm really glad the weather's held out because uh again right now there's no sun baking them to death which will be on the other one one down one to go but on the ground sam can see a problem in 48 hours or less the stadium's gonna be filling up with a bunch of people for their opening day game we were told the new banners are going to be delivered yesterday but uh as of as of right now they are still somewhere on the road the team need the banners delivered today so they can install them first thing tomorrow but for now the priority is stripping down the second banner the number of screws holding the banner up has taken its toll on mike's arm so ricky's rock climbing buddy sam steps in i'm doing sam to get him over the edge i know he was standing on the ground for half the day i'm sure it was bugging the hell out of him and it gives a chance for mike to rest you know sam has one major advantage of a mic on this drop a second power drill now we know we have the other drill now we know we'll go about it that way next time yeah rock and roll holy moly be allowed to work today what a privilege now they've dropped one banner the second should be easier provided sam can master his drill newton's law every action has an equal opposite reactions and all i've got up there i'm hanging on the rope i've got nothing to hang on to besides the ropes when i push the drill up against the wall the wall pushes back against the drill and i you know you just end up every time you push you end up pushing yourself back away from the wall it's a problem that is causing friction sam you need to fix this issue now communication please communication please thank you well i'm right here okay talk to me first please my god is it warm i hate everyone i just like to complain i'm good at it he's thinking about whacking me in the face with that thing extracting your revenge sam please come on from out of nowhere the wind picks up cooling tempers and the breeze the relief is short-lived the cooling breeze quickly becomes a gusting wind and a nightmare for ricky and sam mother nature is she's a just the wind kind of picked up really fast and start to get an updraft and go up towards the roof it was kind of stressed you know we got to get this down getting it down fast before it rips there was at one point where the channel actually flipped around and nearly hit me in the face as the end of the day nears the delivery they are depending on arrives hey guys you guys ready for this oh is that the new banner it's a new banner awesome you can just lay it right there you got it perfect at last the second banner is down [Music] it's one day until the first game of the season to meet that deadline the crew start work at 6am mike and sam will drop the first banner while ricky directs from above but it's three hours before the lines are rigged and the sun is already beating down on the stadium there's shade right there mike i see it my friend i see it i can smell it ricky and sam's boss ken has arrived from phoenix to check on progress the job at the stadium is a big deal to the company if we do it right we do it safe we impress the client then there's endless opportunities more work for us within the university the chance to earn more business in this town finally at 9 00 am ricky gives word and the drop begins under ken's watchful eye again sam struggles come on butter fingers come on it's coming out of your paycheck five cents a screw if sam can't get a grip on his tools the banner won't be installed before the game ken has been joined by associate director of operations matt ewing he's on a deadline and he needs the job finished there's that apprehensive or worriedness or whatever you would call it you're as good as your track record in this business so your word is your track record and if you can't keep your word then you're in trouble you know if the rope team missed their deadline matt is unlikely to give them any more work at the university the pressure is on all right one more time and i'm gonna come down there and take over okay because we gotta move we gotta get this done poke listen stick the stick the screw through the banner yeah stick it through the banner so the banner is going to hold it in place yeah there you go you got to be smarter than the banner man come on rick guide sam through the technique and finally success there you go there's your method so do that over and over and over a little more on the right more on the right hold on hold on hold on hold it sweet perfect all is over good job guys fantastic cloud cover has lowered the temperature making the job easier but this is monsoon season if the clouds turn into a storm they won't be able to work the safety of the guys we have to stop work if that's what it's going to take with a lightning storm or a rainstorm rain begins to fall worse still there's lightning on the horizon you're constantly checking for lightning to see if there's anything around you you have to be 100 positive that there's no lightning in the area ricky orders everyone off the roof despite their deadline they can't afford the risk lightning bolts can reach up to 40 kilometers across the sky and the team is working on one of the highest points around there's not a whole lot of daylight left there's a storm coming uh we got a game tomorrow night in less than what 24 hours away you know the one thing that has to happen is i have to have that banner up by tomorrow morning there's nothing they can do but wait in las vegas absalon usa are racing to install two giant banners on the side of a football stadium but lightning has brought work to a standstill and the team is in danger of missing its end of day deadline what's it looking like right it's just a narrow cell and it's moving up from california and it's just right over us vent we definitely have to get this done tonight tonight eventually the storm passes it's getting late but with future university contracts at stake they must finish the banners tonight tomorrow morning they have a firework display to install before the start of the game all right let's rock and roll you know i know they were worried about it and they really needed that up for their home over and they want their stuff to look nice so and us as well we don't ever like to leave a job half done at all costs we would have stayed here all night if that's what it would have taken the team works on into the darkness by 10 pm the banners are safely installed it's the day of the big game stadium managers want to start with a bang the crew has just four hours to install two boxes of fireworks on the very top of the floodlights for this ricky must climb 40 meters up in the air a fall from this height could kill him so the team need to come up with a safety plan definitely getting to the top of these lights if you notice something i mean all they have is the little small um bolts coming out of the side of which they used to climb up and change those lights and for us you know we have to make sure that we figure out a safe way to get up there and be able to set our anchor system up there high powered stadium lights and heights are a dangerous mix add in fireworks and it's potentially deadly believe it or not walking on the astroturf gets a lot of static electricity so prior to handling it and moving the stuff you got to ground yourself before you touch it to make matters worse another storm is building rick can only make the climb if the weather holds as you can see by the clouds in the sky it's definitely getting nasty out we are for sure going to be fighting the weather before they get done over there you get up on top of the light tower and that's it you're at the highest point you know for miles around here you're on a standing on a huge steel lightning conductor with the game just hours away and the weather closing in they have to get it right first time the one big thing is when i left that wire twist up like once you get the line you're going to haul you know keep it to the side and don't let it hurt because that thing will want to start to do this so just make sure you keep everything away we'll make sure that that the pulley system is nice and even and when you guys start to haul nice and slowly don't rush it don't you i mean [Music] ricky must install a pulley at the top so the team can raise the load as he climbs the pole begins to sway in the breeze the wind will naturally push you back and forth like a swing that'd be our only concern just making sure that we kind of beat this wind and if it's too bad then we've got to call it the wind speed picks up the higher you go obviously now and then uh the stadium kind of covers a lot of it so once you get past that wall you know the wind's really kicking it it was you know just an unease feeling there's for a if the wind gets above 20 kilometers per hour the crew will be forced to abandon the lift after a tough climb ricky finally sends down a line to hoist up the first box got it fully fixed all right everything looks good ready to haul all day nice and easy nice and easy eugene nice and easy keep it away it's crucial they control the box as it rises yeah don't pull out but you don't want it to swing too close either you see that white line will untangle it up either go ahead keep on keep on nice and slow tag it out tag it out be careful behind you jesse each package of fireworks weighs 22 kilos and have been specially built for the event we don't want this thing to swing and boom all right hold there all day hold on all right i gotta fix this mike and the ground crew have hoisted the box as far as the pulley system will allow it's all down to ricky to lift the box over the rail slippery hands could be disastrous ah come on nice you know he's out there securing it so that nothing happens you don't want to tip it over something next you know it comes crashing down ricky wrestles the box into place but he has another to install on another 40 meter mast and the weather window is closing mike speeds up the job by making the second climb with ricky after an intense four hours of work the job is finally complete it's not every day you get to rig up pyros and climb to the top of a light pole in a football stadium and rig up some crazy crazy ra system to be able to get it up there highlight of the job now the crowds are showing up the banners are in place and the fireworks primed the team have worked three days straight to hit their deadlines ricky and mike are about to see if all their hard work has been worth it coming in hot yeah [Applause] [Music] [Applause] come on in 12 seconds [Applause] but it's all right it was awesome that was awesome all that hard work paid off it got up then it got awesome we're good next time the battle to break into vegas continues a job well done at the football stadium earns them a call back to the university and their most technically difficult challenge yet you find me somebody else on the property right now who wants to do what rick's doing nobody nobody and they hit the big time landing a job at the very top of one of the strip's most iconic landmarks pretty windy i'm not gonna lie i'm a little nervous at least pushing 25 miles an hour right now [Music] you
