good morning everybody I'm here at the farm that I spend most of my time at and I'm gonna answer the question today that everybody has been asking what does it take for equipment to farm 1,500 to 2,000 acres of row crops in the year 2018 everybody's interested in how many tractors do you have to have how big do they have to be what do you pull with which tractor and how do you decide how that's gonna work now this is just how we do it this doesn't mean it's the right answer for everybody but it's how it works for us so we're just gonna stroll through the Machine sheds quick and have a little talk about how it works so enjoy I have always loved getting people out on a gravel road and letting them see the farm life firsthand whether it's in the field at our full time farming jobs or here at home on our own little cattle ranch so now I'll bring the camera along and you sit back and ask the questions let's explore this Midwestern farming and ranching lifestyle together this is your channel this is Dodge Brothers farm and ranch this is a John Deere 3033 are with front-wheel assist it is a 33 horsepower compact utility tractor this thing is amazing on the truck auger we pretty much have almost quit using all the other tractors to load semis with because this little tractor can get into tight little spots we can set the auger up at any angle we want and it's just so handy to be able to reach on over there and turn the key on and pop the pto button one thing this tractor does a lot of in the summertime is mowing we've got a five foot john deere rotary bush hog style mower that we pull behind it and it does a lot of mowing in the summer here's the mx-5 bush hog style rotary mower that goes on the back of that little 3033 are as you can see it needs a bath before winter really sets in but this thing spends a lot of time on the back of that 3033 are in the summer clipping head lands and driveways to Fields and just all-around keeping things looking nice and every farm needs a gator or two for getting around the field picking up rocks checking out tile problems and stuff like that you can't beat them no farm would be complete without a skid loader and a set of pallet forks this is a new holland el 175 it has ISO controls and it's just the perfect sized skid loader for moving seed pallets around also you put a mud bucket on this thing or a little backhoe attachment and it's great out in the field to pick up rocks and fix small tile problems like I say a skid loader is just you can't do without it these days this is a John Deere 6430 premium has front wheel assist I believe this tractor is I want to say it's a 2011 or 2012 it's a hundred horse it has a quad range powershift we run it on the snowblower in the winter time we run it on the rock picker in the spring and then in the summer it runs that three-point mounted disc mower in the fall it's oftentimes on a 70 foot 10 inch westfield auger unloading beans or transferring corn and then we do pull the wagon with it when we do some yield checks in the fall so this tractor is a workhorse it gets a lot of things done it's kind of a jack-of-all-trades nice little hundred horse tractor this John Deere three-point mounted disc mower goes on that 6430 and it's really handy for mowing waterways and CRP and cleaning up the edges of the road ditches around driveways and everything this westendorf land scraper works really good behind that 6430 to clean up the driveways and keep them leveled off we have also used it in the past for some sculpting of waterways and filling in washouts after a big disastrous rainstorm but for the most part it gets used around the yard on the driveways we've had this rock picker made by Remlinger for probably the last four or five years and this thing has been a great piece of equipment one man can pick up a lot of rocks with this thing in a day in a big hurry this Brent 644 wagon doesn't get a whole lot of use anymore we pretty much use it for weighing yield checks and for setting it up on an auger to transfer corn and occasionally when it's kind of wet sometimes we'll pull the wagon out of the field if we're working on a field that's really close to home instead of running the semi in and out of the field but we haven't done that for a few years but even though you don't use it very often you just can't part with a wagon this here is the planter it is a John Deere 1770 NT we've had this particular planter for almost nine years now I believe just a couple years back we did go through and put a bunch of precision planting equipment on it if you look at the row units you'll notice that it does have the V set meters it has the V Drive which is an electric drive on each individual meter which means that we have row shutoffs on individual rows and we can set populations on individual rows we have Delta Force installed on this planter the downforce system the hydraulic downforce system from precision we have loved that the Delta Force has been awesome and then we have the pneumatic Clean Sweep system for the row cleaners so we can control the down pressure or up pressure of those row cleaners how aggressive they're gonna run we can control that from the cab on the go we also do no-till our soybeans with this planter and those row cleaners have been amazing for that along with the Delta Force it really helps to keep that row unit in the ground a plus for precision on this planter this is a JM green storm 1050 with big floater tires on it and a tarp to roll across the top this has been a really good grain cart for us for the last three or four years we've really enjoyed it it has an adjustable spout on the end we've got a camera mounted out on the spout so that we can watch a monitor inside the cab and make sure you're not gonna run over the other side of the semi as you're loading it overall this has been a really good green card it unloads really fast this is a Dalton 16 row 30 inch side dress applicator the tank holds sixteen hundred and fifty gallons it is a full type unit and it works really well we've been happy with it I have had to replace a few Coulter's in the last couple of years but overall we got a lot of side dress and done very quickly with this piece of equipment this here is a john deere 82 85 r we've had this tractor for about five years now i believe it's a 2012 13 model maybe i think it's a 2013 it does not have def it just has the tr4 a system which is a kind of an afterburner system in the exhaust it does go through a regeneration cycle every once in a while it's been relatively trouble-free for us though we haven't had any trouble with the emission system on this tractor with John Deere's current numbering system the eight is the series that's the eight R series and the 285 signifies that this is a 285 horse tractor this tractor has probably about a little over 2,000 hours on it right now it's a powershift transmission it does not have the the ivt transmission it does not have front suspension or front duals this tractor runs the cornplanter in the spring that you see parks right there it runs the grain cart in the fall and then it runs that side dress applicator after we plant the corn we we put on 32 percent uan with that side dress applicator and that those are the three things that this tractor does every year you're in a year out so that's one of the things that a lot of people wonder about is how do you share tractors across different operations in the grain farm and so this tractor is a planter side dresser and grain cart operator this is a landahl 2111 Coulter chisel with a big tine Harrow on the back it's a 16 foot implement and 13 shanks we've had this I would say for probably four or five years now we used to have a John Deere deep Ripper disc Ripper and we switched to this unit we've been really happy with it it's it's done a good job we're running it about eight to 10 inches deep depending on the year and right now it's still hooked up to the tractor because we're still hoping that we're gonna be able to get back out in the field with it looking at the weather it looks like we might get another chance so let's roll right into this tractor this is a case 340 Magnum we've had this tractor for four years as well we got it the same fall that we got the landahl chisel this tractor is a nineteen speed power shift which means that it has 18 speeds and then the 19th gear is actually the same road speed as 18th gear but it idles the engine off to 1700 rpm for fuel economy when you're roaring down the road this tractor has front suspension it's got front duals has a suspended cab and it overall it's a pretty nice tractor I prefer the deer's in terms of operating them but that's probably because I spent a lot more time in the deer than I do and this one this is a Land all VT plus it's our spring tillage tool we do all of our tillage right ahead of the planter with this machine I know it looks like a disc but they call it a VT which stands for vertical till the difference is the gangs of blades are not angled nearly as severely as they would be on a disc they're almost running straight and they're much closer together they're seven inches apart it does a great job of busting up clods and sizing the residue we used to run a field cultivator soil finisher in the spring with shovels on it and we ran into a bunch of problems getting the stalks through it the stalks have just been getting tougher and tougher and tougher with these new hybrids so we were looking for something that could handle that and stop making piles of stalks in the spring we tried this VT out it works great the only caveat is you have to be able to go between eight and nine miles an hour to do a really good job of leveling because it doesn't move that much dirt horizontally but when you can achieve that speed you can get over a lot of acres we have no trouble keeping ahead of the planter with this rig it's just the right size for that 340 Magnum case to pull and we've been really happy with it tucked back here where I really can't even walk to it is the John Deere 47 20 sprayer has a 90 foot boom on it this sprayer has been with us for at least 10 years a lot of guys hire the coop to do that but it seems like you can never get it sprayed when you need to get it sprayed and with the tight windows weed pressure and whether it's nice view spray your own stuff so this has been a really good investment here's the old International semi tractor single axle that we lovingly refer to as old blue it's got a cat engine starts up every time but this tractor has been retired from pulling the grain trailer in years past and now it pulls the spray trailer out of the shed around behind the shed and then it's just a basically a mobile jack stand for the spray trailer but you just can't part with a good semi tractor like this you never know when you're gonna call it into action we did pull the grain trailer with it for a day and a half two years ago in the fall when the Volvo was down with a radiator but it was nice to be able to keep going so you got a hold on to something like this back there in the corner behind the corn planter is the spray trailer it's got a couple water tanks inside of it it's plumbed up to hook up to the water it's got the pump and the mixing cone inside and then it's got plenty of storage for sticking your chemical totes in there and boxes and jugs it's it gets hooked onto old blue every year and pulled out of the shed pulled around behind the shed and just like old blue it gets probably it doesn't even get a quarter mile on it every year it probably gets 300 feet on it every year and then it gets put back in here but it's nice to be able to put that out back where you can pull right up to it with the sprayer and load up in years past this trailer used to go to the field a long time ago but at this point we're just driving the sprayer home to reload every time it goes thirty-plus down the road when it's empty so it works really good that way this is a 1999 Volvo VNL with a Cummins m11 under the hood and a super 10 transmission and the only thing this semi tractor does now is pull the grain trailer in the fall we used to pull a nitrogen tanker with it inside dress season in the early summer we've gone away from that bought a few more ground tanks and we have enough storage here on the farm now to unload an entire transport of 32% uan here at the farm and then we just drag the applicator back from the field with the tractor to fill it up every time here's the 36 foot jet grain trailer that goes behind that Volvo VNL this is a steel trailer we like the steel trailers because we don't take them outside in the wintertime they don't get any salt and they're a lot easier to weld and fix on the farm here that an aluminum trailer would be we did have a 30-foot trailer a few years back that we traded off on this one and we weren't quite able to get enough bushels on that one to keep the grain cart happy now everything is sized pretty well the grain cart topped off really nicely we'll fill this semi trailer perfectly and so you don't have to go back for any more to fill the truck of course as we've mentioned in recent videos we just got this 635 FD John Deere Flex Draper this year it's got a Unruh Firth cart underneath it all wheel steer a very good combination we really like this head this year and we really enjoyed the cart it was a big blessing being able to turn in and out of our small driveways so easily with the all-wheel steer cart this is the 2015 John Deere s 660 combine this was our first fall with this machine we had a 660 that we traded off on this one this machine actually came from the same guy that the Draper came from it was traded in together with the Draper and we picked both of them up this fall we really got along great with it with the exception of that valve body that cracked on us in the middle of harvest this machine worked flawlessly it's just the right size to run on our 8th row corn head well unless you're pulling a big hill in mud dump it on the go you've got plenty of power it works great with that 35 foot Draper we're running a 608 c8 row corn head on this combine and underneath we have the yetter stock Devastator attachment we really have liked that we wondered if it was going to work at all it seems like a small diameter roller like that we were afraid it was going to get mudded up we have had a a couple of occasions where you get a small rock stuck in between the frame and the roller and it starts to push and plugs the rows up ahead of it but overall it's been great it busts the stock over right at the ground level disturbs the root ball enough that when you go to chisel it it seems like we have a lot easier time getting rid of the stock rows with the chisel plow and then going into plant beans no-till the next year it's a lot easier on the tires on the tractor and the planter and it really does a good job so that's pretty well it for the equipment for the row crop operation on the farm that I work for I'll have to do another one of these equipment to our videos in the summertime and show you the Haiti equipment that we run with my dad and my brother to make our hay in the summer and then the various equipment that we use to take care of our small cattle herd but as for the row crops that's it for today so thanks for watching thanks for asking all the questions keep them coming thank you for subscribing if you have not yet subscribed I would encourage you to hit that little bell right next to the red subscribe button that way you'll get a notification every time a new video comes out and you won't miss a thing thanks a lot I'll see you next time [Music]
