[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] look at that elephant [Applause] well good morning my friends it's your old pal jordan the lion how y'all doing today i hope you said well today we are adventuring in palm springs we're going out to visit a famous youtuber named memory lane trips with steve i've never met him before but we have the same interest and we thought it might be fun to vlog together today let's go have a blast days with jordan the lion it begins right now i love these old signs i know i do too well we have arrived steve and i started driving out exploring palm springs and check this out he was showing me the old this is the bootlegger but this was the old don the beach comber here in palm springs isn't that cool love those tiki gods out there so we'll take a look at this house it's kind of an unassuming house but this was kirk douglas's house his second palm springs home right here [Music] and steve was telling me that uh when they were making it to mad mad mad mad world spencer tracy and catherine hepburn were staying out here because they did some of the filming out in this area kind of cool not your typical hollywood home my friend scott michaels always loves to see the mailboxes of famous people so there's kirk's palm springs mailbox take a look at this property in that great wow that's definitely the kind of place i'm gonna get when i move out of my parents house this was dinah shore's house and now apparently leonardo dicaprio who i'm a big fan of actually owns it that's somebody who i have to give him credit the guy just he can make any character come to life whether it be someone who actually lived or right off of a page i remember seeing him in this boy's life which was a true story it was a book by tobias wolfe and he was just amazing in that and then he's done howard hughes and catch me if you can he's just an amazing actor definitely one of those people i'd love to hang out with and meet sometime what a beautiful place of course he was and once upon a time in hollywood recently rick dalton in that he was amazing in that of course the dinah shore show so she was a mainstay out here i mean she's got roads named after her out here and just beyond who's owned it it's just a architectural masterpiece i mean palm springs really all is it's really just a masterpiece of architecture okay so this address right here they actually have a plaque out front it says the walter kirschner residence aka casa dere completed 1937 spanish colonial revival kirchner a successful owner of grace in a national chain of ladies apparel shops named casa dare in honor of his daughter brewster and benedict made extensive use of decorative glazed tile throughout the home guest unit and pool rather grandiose edition built in the 1980s on the east side of the home obscured a large portion of the original structure [Music] and here's the front of casa and dare we were looking through that gate where the plaque was but here you can kind of look inside and see the house and the fountain and everything look like apparently this is listed there's a website where you can rent celebrity owned mansions here in palm springs uh via the internet and apparently this was one that elizabeth taylor stayed in and look we made a friend over here at the kirchner residence cassadar what's up kitty so one of the main historic homes that i really wanted to check out today is alan lads love alan ladd's work and unfortunately this is the death home this is the home that he passed away in 1964 and he was a meticulous guy in pretty much everything in his life so there's steve behind me pretty meticulous guy in everything in his life so kind of excited to see what his palm springs home is gonna look like oh take a look at that gate isn't that great very cool take a look at this place carl heyman residence 1964 desert modern the heyman's first visit palm springs in the 1930s the unique modular cast aluminum sunscreens were designed by architect john de covan hill for the tennessee fabricating company the rich ornamental texture complements the strong simple volumes of fray chambers design this custom home take a look through there here's their driveway gate this place is just amazing like i said just palm springs steve even mentioned it's like the architects become the celebrities here because the houses even if somebody famous didn't live in them they're just amazing to come look at but um there's actually a rental you can um i try to get a hold of them you can rent it for weddings i was hoping we could go and take a tour of it and everything but uh at the time that i called their phone number their answering machine said they were only fielding calls from the owners of some of their properties but alan ladd was really one of the biggest stars of his time in fact at the time or at a time for about 20 years he was one of the biggest draws in the box office he really was famous for shane i think that's the one that most people have gravitated towards even he believed that was probably some of his best work because george stevens really gave him some freedom to create some interesting moments in shane even though he's probably most known for being shane or maybe even the great gatsby what people said he was most proud of in his life was the movie that he made with his son where he was a returning soldier from the civil war and he came back home to find his wife had died that his son had been sent to an orphanage so he goes to retrieve his son and finds out that his son can't speak so the movie when they were going to cast it the casting director secretary said if you considered alan ladd because he has a son who's an actor and maybe he would be good for this part and that's exactly what they did so even though alan was drinking in his later years quite a bit he would drink on the set sometimes it was actually during that movie that he made with his son he wouldn't drink at all he didn't want to do anything that would possibly affect his son or his son's performance in that movie a lot of people say it really was one of the greatest things that alan ladd ever did and that movie was called the proud rebel now take a look at this house isn't this incredible you see all those statues and everything out front let's see who this belonged to you can probably tell by looking at the piano mailbox right here that's one of the clues in that great that and then maybe the fact that there's a sign here that says piazza d liberace that's right this was the old palm springs liberace estate i wish they had the fountains on here because those are great let's take a look you can see the uh the detail he always had these at his houses by the way i've uh got the opportunity i'm gonna be going back to vegas and vlogging the inside of liberace mansion here soon i love they have all these statues still here from when he i assume they're from when he lived here you would think right and then take a look as we go around the property there's a statue of liberty in here as well now what you can't see um i could kind of see it from the road in there but down here on the other side he's got like what looks like lions walking by the cement part but as we go over here great trees you'll be able to see the statue of liberty right over here right here from the gate with mardi gras beads i just kind of look at this and imagine his limo being parked right there waiting for him to come out so steve just brought me over to this building here and he was telling me that this was alan ladd's hardware store so i started reading up on it was kind of interesting to find out that how this all came about was when alan and his wife moved out here when they bought this house out here in the 50s they um they had the house built and everything they contacted the builders because they wanted to do an addition onto the house and when they called the builder whose name was higgins to come out they found out that um that allen and he had both went to north hollywood high school and so they got along pretty great right away and when they started talking about additions they wanted to put on to the house they quickly realized that they couldn't get all the lumber and everything that they needed around here so they started talking about it and decided that maybe they should go into business together and even though alan was producing a movie at the time and higgins was building like seven different houses they worked overtime together i guess they said they would work 14-hour days to try and put this together to bring palm springs a hardware store so this was once known as allen ladd hardware and steve was telling me that up until a few years ago right around the corner over here on the side of the building you could still see where they had it painted allen lad hardware so you're saying it used to say it right up there when you would drive by for years so now we've went inside and you can see that they've turned it into all kinds of different businesses that connect through here but this all used to be the big hardware store here in town and inside the building they have all these memorable film posters but right there you see lucille ball lane sheryl mcclane dean martin they better have alan ladd there's elvis and the flaming star the nelsons bob hope catherine hepburn gilda then check out some of this art that they also have inside the building kind of appropriate for a former hardware store wouldn't you say it's an actual real paintbrush it's 3d very cool here's the paint roller okay so now that we made it to the totally opposite side of the building we do have an acknowledgement here right there it says 500 formerly the allen line building so there we go i'm so glad i followed you down here operated by the lab family an upscale hardware store until 2002. steve's taking me out to a little bit of lunch here in palm springs we're going to a place called sherman's deli i'm gonna eat outside of course because of the mandate but the interior has a lot of great film history there's a killer elvis of course that is picasso john wayne miss russell oh karen black nice k ballard and checky green we have some baseball ones back here because the angels originally had spring training out here there's willie mays bob miller and cookie burns don rickles ed asner that's great ah danny bonaduce phyllis diller's down here rip taylor who has a great scene and things are tough all over with cheech and chong carol channing and here's a signed picture of uncle milty milton burrell elvis and jerry look at that and everybody from poncharello to the beaver and wally that one is michael douglas right next to little ricky from i love lucy and their famous deli case with googly eyes look at that let's go eat all right we're gonna have a little deli food here and then we're gonna resume a little sightseeing so this is why i don't normally vlog with other people because i just forgot to film my entire meal thanks to this guy all right even though we're losing a little bit of the daylight we're still gonna see a few houses before the sun goes down oh this is it this is great this used to be walt disney's house steve was telling me that walt had a house out here originally that was up by um smoke creek ranch smoke tree smoke tree ranch but he sold it so that he could get some of the funding to build disneyland i think that was probably a pretty good investment so he then wanted to have a house here so he got this one i was looking at that push up and i was like that's a stretch for a hidden mickey a little bit of a stretch but now on the other side of this house is the golf course oh cool so it overlooks the golf course and it overlooks i don't know if you can actually see his statue but he had a statue and a fountain made for the golf course and i think you might be able to see it from the house really and this is a vacation rental this is kind of a um airbnb type deal we found out yeah look at the gates across the street that is so cool whoever's house that is that is great yeah the spanish style homes they were so popular back then what a beautiful gate huh town of bedrock it's a page right out of history doesn't that look like the flintstones it does i haven't thought of that but it does now here's definitely a mid-century modern home and this one was chuck connor's house the rifleman there's also in roots i'm using a ton of stuff but i think everybody probably knows him primarily from the riflemen one of the interesting things to me about chuck connors is that he was a professional athlete in three different sports if you go to the vlog i made at his grave he was on the celtics i think he was on the cubs and want to see the bears yeah pretty crazy guy was extremely talented rifleman so this is not one of our famous home stops but it's a beautiful house but it's right next door to one of our stops not incredible so this one's great this is the former home of the great don adams maxwell smart not only maxwell smart but uh inspector gadget can't forget that one it's kind of sad when he first passed away he uh he had this really amazing headstone it was a bust of him with the shoe phone and i actually have a photo of myself as mark twain for halloween posing with that and for some reason the family removed it almost immediately and then they put like a plaque out there of almost the same thing but it's too bad it was way cooler before what a great career he had he knew this was going to be a success so he was one of those people that made sure he got the back end of his time on this show and he he made a lot of money okay there it is right off my facebook page so disregard that square over don adams head but that is me dressed as mark twain with my shoe up to my ear next to don adams original bust so and then he moved over to the one we went to earlier so this was kirk douglas's house for two years in 1955. so that would have been the uh the home of the man who was spartacus who just recently passed away so this is funny just as i got out of the car to walk over and vlog it a gentleman was out finishing up his walk and was crossing the street over here and actually walked right in that he owns this house this was bob hope's house look at that casa hope and it says this spanish-style ranch home and casita was the first home purchased in palm springs by bob and delores hope acquired in 1941 the beloved home remained the hope family in the hope family for 72 years isn't that cool so that's it 72 years owning this home in the family and if you don't know i'll be the one to tell you bob hope at one time was a very very very large land holder in california in fact i think they said he had either the most property in california or the second most at one time so kind of cool to see this okay so this house this is the el nido this one is also a vacation property that they're um touting as being dorothy lamour's house and dorothy lamora was really big in her day the 30s 40s especially one of the biggest actresses on the screen but i primarily know her from bob and bing movies i love those movies and it's you know she's right here in the area of where both of those guys live so it's kind of funny to think that they probably talked about making those movies while living out here but yeah this was her house el nido this house on the corner for sale is the bob hope second home here let's take a look at this since it's for sale they've got it all lit up and everything they've got a plaque here plex is the home of hope built 1935 bob hope and wife delores hope purchased this home in 1946 the hope family enjoyed many years living here while in their beloved palm springs the hope estate sold the property 67 years later in 2013. isn't that cool it's all staged for sale and everything oh it's in escrow so it looks like someone's already hopped on this one so we're gonna pop in this botanical garden really quick um steve was telling me that the guy who used to own this used to be the like the gardener for walt disney at disneyland and also apparently way back even before that he was one of the keystone cops not one of the original seven but he he was in the keystone cop movies he's a keystone cop fortunately he's passed away but apparently this place is pretty great so we're gonna check it out take a look at this cactus slim was your father yeah amazing yeah he was truly an amazing man he was telling me he used to do the uh some of the the gardening and everything of disneyland it was keystone cop and well he he he actually came to california got into movies then he worked around the movie industry for several years but it was eyes they didn't discover to have tuberculosis so he went to the adventure tv yeah and they said he probably wouldn't survive but he did live 50 more years and escaped his home here oh that's how you knew disney disney called him and said you know we need some desert landscaping it a little amusement park we're building he says so that's how we got connected with the desert plants at frontierland when it opened up that's so cool oh there's his father this is their botanical garden he was telling us that uh i said his dad originally came out here mining for gold and uh found out that you made a lot more money selling cactus than you did gold so he got into cactus instead what a beautiful place huh i love all the uh little accoutrements everywhere they're getting ready to close right now so we'll have to come back but uh kind of nice to just take a look around we're open every day ten to four just closed wednesdays all right we'll come back and explore us another time then wow what a great day in palm springs today i hope you guys enjoyed this all right steve well it's now 9 30 in the evening you've shown me around palm springs and been a
