Aloha at the Honolulu Airport we meet a few of the many thousand passengers who travel on Aloha airline planes annually one of the advantages of traveling on this unique airline is the fact that passengers from the mainland arriving at the Honolulu Airport can transfer to an Aloha Airlines plane without even bothering to enter the airport station here's a family of seven for example just arriving from California and it's their desire to see the neighbor islands first reserving Oahu and it's Honolulu with a grand finale of their visit incidentally this is not the Swiss Family Robinson it's the American family Fitzpatrick perhaps there's no word in the Hawaiian language with more diversified meaning than the word Aloha it stems from the word love and it expresses a lovely welcome as well as a sad farewell and it also means the best in tirana line service in Hawaii at the time of our visit the Aloha Airlines specialized in comfortable dc-3 planes flying reasonably low over its picturesque planes of travel so as to permit its passengers to enjoy thrilling vistas of land and sea informality is the keynote of the lola airline service and it is not unusual to find its passengers dressed in local costumes although airlines and formal policy is based on the premise that the quickest way to know a place is to know its people here is a rather unique device originated and patented by aloha airline which permits passengers to take pictures through clear atmosphere thereby eliminating glass high elation after gliding by the famous shore of Waikiki our plane points out over the blue Pacific and in about 40 minutes we land on the island of Maui and continue our journey by automobile over one of the smooth highways that are to be found all over the Hawaiian Islands this highway winds its way from sea level to the very rim of Haleakala one of the world's largest volcanoes known in Hawaiian folklore as the house of the Sun it's crater is about seven miles long and two miles wide and it has been dormant for more than two centuries incidentally all of New York's Manhattan Island could fit very comfortably within this crater Haleakala is the home of the silver sword a strange plant which is said to be found only in Hawaii where it seems to thrive on volcanic cinders it was once threatened with extinction but it is now protected by law and it actually thrives in the more desolate parts of the crater continuing our journey we descend almost two miles to the level of the sea and we are again thrilled by beautiful vistas along the road which incidentally cost over $600,000 to construct we are now in the little town of Halawa Hina where we visit one of the most progressive schools in the Hawaiian Islands and here's the school band on parade and now we visit one of the classrooms where we are impressed by a very well-behaved group of children under the tutelage of mrs. Emma Shar one of Hawaii's most beloved teachers who is presenting a very special Christmas show so we say farewell to these happy little school children and drive onto the Maui Palms Hotel where we plan to spend a few days in rest and relaxation Maui found specializes and comfortable accommodations good food and of course the proverbial Hawaiian hospitality the swimming pool which is situated just off the main dining room of the hotel is always a scene of lively activity and when night descends upon this setting it forms an appropriate background for typical Hawaiian diversion on this occasion it is our good fortune to be entertained by the famous coral and dancing group under the direction of our schoolteacher friend emma sharp the favorite number in Emma's diversified repertoire is this so called organ pipe death wherein the sound is made from bamboo sticks pounded against the ground at definite intervals you and so ends our brief visit to Maui the next day we rise into the Hawaiian skies again enroute to the island of Kauai one of the world's most picturesque Island Kauai is known as the Garden Isle and it is noted for its scenic grandeur which we lose no time and exploring we are now traveling and one of Willy do our sightseeing buses the ideal vehicle for a comfortable trip around the island and there's the colorful valley of Hanalei a paradise in itself still growing products of the soil that originated here long before the days of King Kamehameha especially the ancient taro plant which was once the staff of life and old the white the lush valleys of Kauai abound in beautiful scenery fields of sugar cane bananas and coconuts present a panorama of subtropical splendor one of the most impressive landmarks along this roof is known as the sleeping giant and here you can see it's outlined in the distance background no visitor call I would be complete without a sojourn of the Coco Palms Hotel which we are now approaching the hotel grounds are literally covered with cocoa ponds and at night hundreds of charges are lighted beneath these palms by the traditional torch bearers who run around the trees at astounding speed as they light the torches not only is the setting and exotic attraction the accommodations are unique and unusually comfortable and the food especially the barbecued steaks and turkeys is superb just across the way from the Coco Palms the strip of beach that is ideal for bathing after three days of delightful sojourning we lead the lovely island of Kauai and fly out over the sea again unroot to Hawaii the largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago inside the plane the incomparable airline service continues unabated and we have begun to feel like Native Hawaiians in this tropical utopia thrilling pictures never cease the views from the magic camera windows and Ally airline planes naturally provide a tremendous advantage for ideal photography we are now flying along the coast of Oahu which presents some of the most picturesque misses that this world has to offer there before us is the famous old landmark known as Diamond Head the crater of an extinct volcano the story is told that some British sailors exploring this old crater discovered what they thought were diamonds which in reality were sparkling olivines formed by the intense heat of molten lava many centuries ago nevertheless the false diamonds gave a name to this old landmark which will always be dial and head and now we're guiding by that renowned district known as Waikiki with a strip of Beach which has become world-famous as a front yard for many of Honolulu's outstanding hotels and now we're approaching the main entrance to Honolulu Harbor with its famous aloha tower ordinarily passengers would disembark in Honolulu but insofar as we are on a special flight we will turn south eastward to the grand ole light on the Hawaii the largest in the group we land at Hilo the principal city and lose no time and starting our sightseeing tour in a trade winds autobus this is Main Street and we happen to be here during the Christmas season which accounts for the street decoration one of hero's favorite tourist attractions is Rainbow Falls you by autobus from hilo we will travel over roads that lead through spectacular fields of lava which have not lost the heat of eruption and here's our bus one of the fleet which is operated by tradewind towards an ideal way to do your sightseeing while in Hawaii about 30 miles from Hilo we arrive at our destination a black sand beach which is known as kalapana most of the world's volcanoes are situated within contact distance of the sea the ultimate receptacle for the molten streams of lava that arbel step through the earth in this particular instance the flow created a beach of fine lava sand which unfolds like an eerie black carpet as we see it here remember the Fitzpatrick family we saw getting on the Aloha airline plane of Honolulu well here they are all seven of them and they're having a wonderful time the next day we drive from the hilo hotel to the great volcano fields of Kilauea although there was no volcano activity to speak of during the time of our visit there is always a thrill of expectation when one travels through here fortunately the geologists who have become familiar with the eruptions of these volcanoes have established the safest routes for travels for all this region this is the crater of Kilauea which has been one of the most active of all Hawaiian volcanoes the story is told of a young Japanese girl in a Portuguese sailor who were ardently in love with each other but the girl could not get her parents consent to marry the Sailor consequently these young lovers formulated a suicide pact and both of them jumped into the pit of this crater it was necessary to run a cable across the special section where the bodies lay and the grief-stricken father of the girl was lured from the cable to the fatal spot and with the body of his daughter in his arms he was heisted back to the rim of the crater then he made a second ascent and brought up the body of the Sailor from the volcano house we motor through the colorful fern forest on route to the Kona Coast they Turing a little from our roots we pause at a fishing village to watch some native fishermen catching fish after the fashion of old Hawaii another method that has become very popular here is spearfishing in this manner continuing our journey we finally arrived on the picturesque Kona Coast aside from fishing Kona plays a very important part in the history of Hawaii for it was here that the ancient kings and queens made their headquarters and not the least of these was the great kamehameha himself the little town of Kailua has become a popular vacation resort and tourist shopping center here the female branch of the Fitzpatrick family visit the Kona gift shop where one may purchase a splendid assortment of Hawaiian souvenirs and wearing apparel including the full-blown muumuu the original version of the muumuu one of the name of Mother Hubbard was introduced by the early missionaries who were somewhat shocked by the Polynesian custom of wearing Skadi attire the attractive young lady who operates this shop is Barbara thirsty one of the most successful stylists in the Hawaiian island and now behold the transformation Fitzpatrick's have become Native Hawaiian and they will no longer answer to the name of mala heave or newcomer and spar at their karma - are old timers at the Kona Palms Hotel we enjoy a plunge into the ever popular swimming pool before leaving this exotic place we accept an invitation from mr. and mrs. Lauren Thurston to swim in the fantastic pool which adjoins their kona estate it is really a walled-in arm of the Pacific Ocean and here comes the first and speed boats slowing down to enter the Magoo but now the time has come for us to bring our family sojourn in Hawaii to a conclusion and as the Sun sinks slowly into a cloud Laden sky we most reluctantly say farewell to the Hawaiian island utopia of the Pacific and for those of you who would like to follow in our flight steps we most sincerely recommend the Aloha airline for all inter-island flights throughout the Hawaiian Islands remember Aloha means welcome and farewell and it is also the name of Hawaii's most popular airline so when you visit the Hawaiian Islands don't forget to fly Aloha Airlines
