unfailing love in the midst of every trial tonight we'll be focusing on verses from psalm 94 verses that assure us of god's unfailing love and support we'll be encouraged to let go of fear and anxiety we'll experience the freedom god offers as we lean on him through every circumstance but before we begin please take a few moments to settle into bed make yourself comfortable and take a few deep breaths to help you relax whisper a quiet prayer inviting the holy spirit to be with you ask for his presence in jesus name inhale and exhale feel every muscle relax as you center your thoughts on god's word in his presence tonight now let me pray over you heavenly father thank you for being with this listener tonight i pray that you will cover them with an amazing amount of peace the peace that surpasses all understanding and comes from your spirit i pray that no matter where they are in the world and no matter what they're feeling that you will be with them and free them from all anxiousness lord please help this person release every ounce of worry and stress to you right here in the stillness of the room lead them to extend their arms as a symbol of letting go of all the things that are troubling them please help them help them to know that you are with them and that you love them deeply lord i ask that you help this listener experience the freedom you offer when they look to you for answers and guidance instead of looking to the world please help them remain in step with your spirit letting you guide them in every decision help them to abide in the true vine allowing you to prune away all the things that don't belong and help them to rest in the protective shelter of your wings in the precious name of jesus i pray amen now take one more slow breath in and brought me joy rest in those words for a few moments each of us at different times in our lives has felt as though our feet were slipping either by our own choices or habits or by life circumstances of which we have no control we've found ourselves slipping away [Music] and even falling a time or two [Music] if this describes you please know that you're not alone other brothers and sisters in christ have slipped as well and many have found themselves living a life of imbalance and struggling to remain steady on their feet but please remember this god's unfailing love is always there to support you you are not left to figure out things for yourself he is there to uphold you to help you get back on your feet and then to lead you in the way you should go you can trust him lean on him and rest in him there is great peace and knowing that god's unfailing love never leaves you he supports you every step of the way steady strong unchanging unfailing that's what god's love is rest in the stillness of the room and feel god's unfailing love surrounding you supporting you and setting you free let's pray precious god holy god as the remnants of worry and anxiety decrease we feel your love increase more and more thank you we praise you we rest in your presence and find freedom in your spirit for where your spirit is there is freedom tonight lord break every stronghold of anxiety in the life of this listener cut the chains of fretfulness and unrest open wide the window of your peace and usher in the sweet fragrance of joy it is in the name of jesus we pray these things amen word consolation for a moment consolation means comfort compassion relief and strength your consolation comes from the unfailing love of god through jesus christ his son i'm reminded of a beautiful passage of scripture that tells of a man named simeon who was led by the spirit to the temple on the same day that mary and joseph brought the baby jesus to be dedicated you see simeon had long awaited the birth of the messiah the consolation of israel and by the divine providence of god his eyes beheld the newborn king this is what simeon said when he took jesus in his arms lord now you're letting your servant depart in peace according to your word for my eyes have seen your salvation which you have prepared before the face of all peoples a light to bring revelation to the gentiles in the glory of your people israel according to the word of the lord jesus came to be the consolation of israel a light to the gentiles and the glory of his people he is your consolation your light and your glory through comfort compassion relief and strength jesus casts all anxiety away and replaces it with perfect peace there is no need to be anxious anymore every need you have is covered in jesus he comforts you he offers compassion and relief from every worry he strengthens you and leads you into the assurance that he has everything under control release everything to him when anxiety was great within me your consolation brought me joy rest in the joy of the lord feel his peace wash over you like a healing balm in him you have received healing and renewal the old things are gone and the new has come all anxieties are taken away and replaced by god's consolation of peace in psalm 119 we hear these words remember your promise to me it is my only hope your promise revives me it comforts me in all my troubles remember god's promises they are your hope they comfort you in every trouble he promises to uphold you with his righteous right hand he promises to love you with an everlasting love he promises to be with you always never leaving you or forsaking you rest deeply in the promises of god tonight doubt cannot remain where god's truth abides fear is cast out where god's peace resides anxiety runs dry as god's presence fills worries are calmed as the holy spirit stills gracious god please remember this beloved listener tonight as they sleep soundly in your presence and in your grace bless them as they rest in you keep them in the fold of your unfailing love and guard them through every hour of the night thank you lord for freeing this person of all righteousness in today's story we'll travel 2000 years back in time to a judean hillside as jesus talks to his followers about worry and about god's providence as you prepare for today's story get keep your eyes closed imagine walking through the countryside of judea in the days of christ it's a day far removed from our cluttered lives there are no cell phones no computers no video games no cars it's just you and god and his creation oh and a few hundred other followers of jesus you're one of those followers but it doesn't seem crowded everyone around you is patient and happy and full of cheer it's as if they've waited all their lives for this moment it's as if their people have waited centuries for this time in history no one's in a rush no one is pushy they're savoring every second a mother and her young son are in front of you laughing the boy he appears to be about five turns around and gives you an innocent wave you smile back near them is a short gray-haired elderly woman she asks the question everyone else is thinking is he the messiah no one answers but you've heard enough stories about jesus healing the sick and giving sight to the blind that you've already formed your opinion he claims to be god's son and you believe it at the head of the crowd is jesus himself surrounded by peter james and john and the other disciples he's led his followers to an area near the sea of galilee it's a beautiful day and you're enjoying the walk it's warm and mostly sunny with only a few white wispy clouds high overhead they're moving ever so slowly across the sky as if they too are hanging around and watching jesus wanting a glimpse of the messiah the warm sunshine massages your skin and a cool breeze off the sea of galilee ensures you don't get too hot the breeze carries within a dozen earthy aromas water and dirt and freshwater fish and even the unmistakable scent of wildflowers from the nearby shore to your right you spot two fishermen in a small sailboat pulling their net up from the sea of galilee they've caught perhaps a dozen fish today and you watch as they carefully pluck each one from the webbing suddenly one of the fishermen looks in your general direction and motions to his friend who looks your way too you quickly realize that they're not looking at you but at jesus both men rush to the back of the boat and grab their paddles they hurriedly place them just under the surface of the water and begin rowing to shore they're wanting to see jesus and if they hurry they will up ahead on your path you spot a squirrel searching for food within the rocks it's cleaning its face oblivious to the crowd around it you hear a joyful child's voice commenting on the squirrel's bushy tail and furry ears all of a sudden the squirrel dashes away from you and toward the front of the crowd perhaps it's chasing an insect or maybe it's just like those fishermen and it wants to see jesus too a few minutes have passed and jesus has led everyone to a hill overlooking the sea of galilee it's filled with large and small boulders alike with green grass growing everywhere else please gather around he tells the crowd he's sitting halfway up the hill on a large flat rock underneath a tall juniper tree the hill is spacious enough to give everyone plenty of room just as important it's quiet enough so that anyone in the crowd can hear you find a small boulder to sit on to listen to jesus he's about seven long steps directly in front of you although the twelve disciples are the closest to jesus peter is sitting on a rock to your right he's laughing and talking to andrew his brother jesus is patient as everyone continues to find a place to sit an older woman sits down to your left in an empty spot of green grass she appears to be in her 60s and she begins chatting her husband she tells you is a farmer things have been tight lately during the drought her brow is filled with wrinkles she looks anxious it hasn't rained in days she says i'm worried she asks you if you think jesus is the messiah you smile at her and give an approving nod a hush quickly falls over the crowd jesus is speaking blessed are the poor in spirit he says for theirs is the kingdom of heaven blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be satisfied blessed are the merciful for they shall receive mercy blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see god blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of god blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account rejoice and be glad for your reward is great in heaven for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you you are the salt of the earth but if salt has lost its taste how shall its saltiness be restored it is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet you are the light of the world a city set on a hill cannot be hidden nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a stand and it gives light to all in the house in the same way let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your father who is in heaven jesus has been speaking for about 15 minutes you're struck by his calm demeanor his knowledge of scripture his love for the people above all you're struck by his wisdom he's unlike any rabbi you've seen his words seem as if they're straight from god himself your mind begins drifting as you think about jesus role in your life a thousand questions swirl in your head if jesus is the messiah then what does that mean for your future what does it mean for your people is he the answer to every problem in your life is he god suddenly jesus looks straight at you and smiles he continues preaching but you think to yourself was he reading my mind did he know what i was thinking whatever the case you continue listening no one can serve two masters jesus says for you will hate one and love the other you will be devoted to one and despise the other you cannot serve both god and money that is why i tell you not to worry about everyday life whether you have enough food and drink or enough clothes to wear isn't life more than food and your body more than clothing look at the birds he says pointing to a few sparrows on the tree limbs above him you don't plant or harvest or store food in barns for your heavenly father feeds them and aren't you far more valuable to him than they are can all your worries add a single moment to your life and why worry about your clothing jesus says pointing to the valley below they don't work or make their clothing yet solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are and if god cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow he will certainly care for you why do you have so little faith so don't worry about these things saying what will we eat what will we drink what will we wear these things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers but your heavenly father already knows all your needs seek the kingdom of god above all else and live righteously and he will give you everything you need so don't worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will bring its own worries today's trouble is enough for today an hour has passed jesus has finished preaching he and his disciples are huddled together further up the hill about 20 paces from you straight ahead some of jesus followers have walked back to their villages others though are still gathered on the hillside in groups of two or three discussing this sermon on the mountain the elderly woman who sat to your left is one of those who has hung around she's smiling now her demeanor has radically changed she's no longer worrying she approaches you with tears of joy and shouts the lord will provide the lord will take care of us she points to the western horizon a storm is building a cool wind is blowing your direction much needed rain is on the way you look up at jesus and his followers who are also looking at the growing storm he briefly glances down at you and smiles tears of joy stream down your face as you recall jesus words look at the birds they don't plant or harvest or store food in barns for your heavenly father feeds them and aren't you far more valuable to him than they are can all your worries add a single moment to your life and why worry about your clothing look at the lilies of the field and how they grow they don't work or make their clothing yet solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are and if god cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow he will certainly care for you seek the kingdom of god above all else and live righteously and he will give you everything you need as we transition back to the present day let's meditate on jesus promise to his followers as you relax and fall asleep listen again to the words of christ i will pray for you throughout the passage remember god will provide for anxious and yet you always provide for them your word tells us you already know our every need we praise you for who you are promise keeper and provider we love you seek the kingdom of god above all else and live righteously and he will give you everything you need so don't worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will bring its own worries today's trouble is enough for today father we lay our burdens before you and we thank you for everything you have given us i ask that you will grant this child of yours a wonderful night's sleep and pleasant dreams it's in christ's name that i pray amen listen that when we seek your kingdom first you will give us everything we need father we are seeking your kingdom we want to know you more we want to abide in your presence i ask that you will grant this precious child of yours pleasant dreams and a peaceful night's sleep help them to wake up refreshed ready to serve you another day it's in jesus name that i pray amen tonight's story healed by jesus takes us to a life-changing moment in time as a suffering woman takes a bold step of faith and reaches for the only one who can heal her but before we get into the scriptures please get settled into bed and take a few deep breaths to help you relax release everything that is on your mind clear your thoughts of all distractions by focusing only on jesus whisper his name invite the lord to be with you as you keep your mind fixed on him ask for him to fill the room with his peace and his presence breathe in and release your breath slowly be assured tonight that jesus loves you even though you've probably heard that phrase many times it is a powerful truth you can count on jesus loves you he knows your name amidst all the people in the world he knows exactly what you need inhale deeply and exhale completely pull the soft covers around you and lie very still for a moment think only of the gentle savior who loves you and surrounds you with his peace and tenderly jesus is calling calling for you and for me please pray with me heavenly father in the precious name of your son jesus i pray over this beloved listener tonight with each breath they take i ask you to fill them with your peace lord each of us needs your tender healing touch just as the woman bravely reached out and touched the hem of your robe so we reach out to receive healing from you tonight mind heart body and soul please heal every broken place lord as this dear child hears your words of comfort tonight let your spirit flow through them reminding them of your truth let them know they are deeply loved by you as they fall asleep i pray that your presence will guard them all through the night and when they wake pray that they will be fully renewed ready to face the day complete whole healthy and secure i ask for these things in the name of your son jesus amen before we get into our sleep story take one more deep breath in and release it as slowly as you can relax every muscle from head to toe feel the tension leaving your body god is with you feel his comforting presence rest in his love and peace oh how he cares for you now we turn to the shores of galilee as a multitude of people wait for jesus he steps out of the boat and is welcomed by them they gather around him pressing in on every side desperate to get close to him a woman is in the crowd a dear woman who has been bleeding for 12 long years can you imagine she has suffered for so long without relief she has spent her life savings on doctors and treatments hoping something will work she has been isolated and outcast as a woman who is unclean by every standard of the jewish law she should not be there this day however she has nowhere else to go she is desperate to find healing and she knows there is one who can make her whole perhaps you have felt unclean or isolated maybe you don't believe you should receive anything from god if so please release those thoughts to the savior tonight he has washed away your guilt and shame he has torn the veil so that you can enter the holy of holies he invites you to come boldly to the throne of grace gracious god please release this beloved listener of all doubt tonight as they come before you remove any obstacle that stands in their way restore their faith in you leading them to your throne fully surrendered to you in the name of jesus i pray even though the woman was deemed unclean by the jewish law the law of love prevailed that day her faith in jesus took her to galilee despite the label others had placed on her and in faith she waited for just the right time to touch the hem of his robe her story is recorded in luke chapter 8 verses 43 and 44. now a woman having a flow of blood for 12 years who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any came from behind and touched the border of his garment and immediately her flow of blood stopped immediately she was healed with one slight touch she received the power of jesus mighty to heal you see as jesus the great physician walked past she knew without a doubt that he was able to heal he is able as efficient says he is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine according to his power that is at work within us rest in that comforting truth tonight gracious god healer and friend we come humbly before you thanking you for being with us as this beloved person seeks you tonight help them to find your grace and peace remind them that they are created to seek you reach for you and find you for you are not far from them i pray for this dear person to be assured of the healing power of your presence i ask lord that you heal every affliction every illness and every issue they might have in the mighty name of jesus and by the power of your spirit please move through this person's body to bring full healing and restoration thank you father in jesus's name amen after the woman touched the hem of jesus's robe he stopped and asked who touched me none of his disciples could answer him in fact they questioned the lord by saying master the multitude strong and press you and you say who touched me but jesus said somebody touched me for i perceived power going out from me jesus already knew who the woman was yet he stopped to ask who had touched him he wanted her to come forward in faith jesus wants you to come to him in faith as well he invites you to ask of him in john chapter 14 jesus said whatever you ask in my name that i will do that the father may be glorified in the sun if you ask anything in my name i will do it this heart lord needs your cleansing power this mind lord needs your thoughts of praise this body lord needs your healing touch this soul lord needs your hands to raise be still before the lord tonight resting in his love towards you trust him to know exactly what you need trust him to heal you when the woman saw that she was not hidden from jesus she came trembling and falling down before him she declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him and how she was healed immediately then jesus said to her daughter be of good cheer your faith has made you well go in peace here jesus's words again be of good cheer your faith has made you well go in peace your faith as small as a tiny mustard seed is enough believe that jesus is mighty to heal from every sickness and pain he is more than able to make you well do not give up keep pressing in keep taking hold of the hem of his garment believing he can heal you lord jesus i pray for this beloved person tonight hopeful for your hand of healing over their infirmities please lord renew their hope in you never let them doubt that you are able to heal give them strength comfort and direction as they walk in faithfulness to you i ask that you work through their body through every fiber of their being to heal and restore them to health no matter what lord i pray that this child will give you all the glory honor and praise i pray that they will be a living testimony of what you've done for them be with them lord be their comfort and their peace i prayed these things in your holy name amen we invite you to listen in as david determines that there is no reason for him to fear no matter what he faces because god is greater than his fear before we listen in to david as he admits and conquers his fear get comfortable relax and be ready stomach and your shoulders let your eyebrows relax as your body relaxes your mind can relax as well and release your fears dear heavenly father as your child prepares to sleep we ask that you will flood them with the knowledge that you are greater than anything they fear help them to lay any fears and concerns at your feet right now and to be confident that you are listening and that you care deeply for your child and will act on their behalf even as your beloved sleeps we pray you would direct their dreams protect them from their own stresses and worries by taking them on your own strong shoulders in jesus christ we pray amen with that let's begin our story david had been on the run for quite a while now he had been loyal to king saul but saul had betrayed him and sought to kill him by this david knew that king saul was not just going against him but against god saul and david both knew that god had chosen david to succeed saul yet saul refused to accept that to combat his fears david liked to write songs at one time he had written songs the comfort king saw yet now he wrote them to comfort himself writing down what was true about god helped him remember who god was which put his own fears in their place david pulled the slab of damp clay in front of him and then picked up the stiff reed to use as his writing tool he stuck the reed in his mouth for a moment as he thought as was often the case the words began to flow freely the lord is my light and my salvation whom shall i fear the lord is the stronghold of my life of whom shall i be afraid what comfort these words brought him as he sat in a dark cave he reflected on how the lord was his light the lord was the one who would ultimately rescue him david knew better than to trust in his own puny power and as he spent his life on the run it brought him great joy to remember that the lord is his stronghold and that was much more secure than the most powerful fortress your own fears become greatly diminished since god is your light salvation and stronghold david looked out of the cave's mouth and could picture saul and his mighty army coming after him he took a deep breath and rote when the wicked advance against me to devour me it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall though an army besiege me my heart will not fear the war break out against me even then i will be confident picture the lord standing at your side with his mighty heavenly army coming against your fear let that image give you confidence david bowed his head to pray and ponder what did he want from the lord as he thought about it he knew with certainty one thing i ask from the lord this only do i seek that i may dwell in the house of the lord all the days of my life to gaze on the beauty of the lord and to seek him in his temple more than anything david wanted to dwell in the house of the lord which meant that he wanted to be in his presence david knew that god was with him even in this dark cave but he longed to worship him publicly before all of israel his shoulders slumped as he thought about how he was barred from the places he'd come to love but then another thought came to him as he looked out over the fields of israel even on the run he was able to see god's handiwork yet he knew that the lord was even more beautiful than his creation he found great comfort in that the beauty of the lord is overwhelming and awe inspiring with these thoughts david sat up straighter and wrote for in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me at his sacred tent i will sacrifice with shouts of joy i will sing and make music to the lord the high ground was the best place for battle and every warrior wanted possession of it the lord kept him safe sheltered him and set him upon the high rock even if he wasn't on the literal high ground he was certainly on the spiritual high ground god has set you on the high ground spiritually and you can make music in your heart to him david stood up and walked outside the cave he suddenly felt overwhelmed with all he'd been through he lifted his arms and said aloud hear my voice when i call lord be merciful to me and answer me my heart says of you seek his face your face lord i will seek that's what he was doing seeking the lord's face he had bowed his head but now he lifted it up do not hide your face from me do not turn your servant away in anger you have been my helper do not reject me or forsake me god my savior david had cried out to god in anguish his emotions getting the best of him but now he put his arms down and put one foot but now he put his arms down and put one foot down firmly to help his body and heart follow his mind though my father and mother forsake me the lord will receive me this is what he knew to be true even those who loved him most would at times fail him but the lord would never turn him away david went back inside the cave he sank down onto the hard floor and thought about saul saul too had at one time worshiped god but now he had turned his back on him david never wanted to be guilty of that he knew how easy it would be to lose heart and confidence in god because of his circumstances so he whispered under his breath teach me your way lord lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors do not turn me over to the desire of my foes for false witnesses rise up against me spouting malicious accusations it helped david to recognize that what others said about him were lies it comforted him to know that god knew the truth yes god knew and was watching over him every moment he would never abandon him for even a second david picked up the read and wrote boldly i remain confident of this i will see the goodness of the lord in the land of the living he would keep this tablet and read those words often he committed them to memory so that when difficult things happened he would remember the truth that god is good and wants nothing but good for him david didn't know how long it would take for god to vindicate him and put him on the throne he didn't know how long it would take for saul to quit pursuing him but he did know one thing that he would tell himself and those who followed him wait for the lord be strong and take heart and wait for the lord as you drift to sleep let the silence of the night renew and refresh you god is in the silence and wants to whisper encouragement and assurance to your soul he wants you to know his great love for you and fill you with strength even as you sleep as you rest i will pray psalm 27 for you the lord is your light and salvation whom shall you fear the lord is the stronghold of their life of whom shall they be afraid when the wicked advance against them and they feel like they are going to devour them help them to know that it is their enemies and foes who will stumble and fall though an army besieged them they will not fear the war break out against them they will be confident i ask one thing that even as they sleep they will know that god dwells with them always and will never abandon them for even a moment help them to drift to sleep with the knowledge that god is beautiful beyond description because he made all things of beauty help them to sleep soundly for in the day of trouble you will keep them safe in your dwelling you will hide them in the shelter of your sacred tent and set them high upon a rock then their head will be exalted above their enemies who surround them this knowledge makes them shout for joy it makes them sing and make music to you lord hear their voice when they call lord be merciful and answer let their heart say seek your face and let them do so even in sleep i know that you will not hide your face from them that you will not turn away in anger you have been their helper your faithfulness in the past helps them trust you now you will not reject or forsake them god our savior even those who love them will fail them but you will never fail them lord teach them your way lead them in a straight path because of their oppressors if others tell lies against them you will remind them of the truth may they remain confident of this they will see your goodness in the land of the living you almost never do things on their schedule you always do things perfectly at the perfect time because you know everything help them to remember this lord help them to wait patiently for you help them to be strong and take heart in the boat to sleep you sit next to him you lean on him as your savior rests the wind begins to hit your face the spray from the waves you begin to feel water at your feet you wake up your master who is sleeping you see the look of peace in his eyes you're in awe of that peace jesus waves his hands perhaps without taking his eyes off of you you feel the wind stop the waves are gone jesus whispers to you my child have faith in me my child believe in me you feel yourself falling asleep in his arms as his peace surrounds you dear peaceful and restful father give this child tonight your faith give this child tonight your peace no wind in their face no mist from waves no water at their feet let them hear your peaceful voice let them hear your loving voice your powerful protecting voice a voice that calms storms a voice that brings peace a voice that brings rest sleep pace your breathing as you listen to the word of god being prayed softly over you breathe slow and deep as you hear god's heavy burdens that you were never meant to carry feel the gentle weight of your covers the pillow beneath your head the soothing night sounds around you relax and breathe keep your breathing slow and steady as you listen to the sound of my voice i want to take you to a place of unfathomable beauty and peace some think heaven is just a figment of your imagination but you know that it is real and you know that it is your true home your eternal country the place your heart longs for above all else sometimes the egg to be there is so strong but rest rest knowing that it is your future eternal home we all have experienced pain in this world we all have shed tears but there will come a time when there will be no more pain and no more tears listen to these verses from the book of revelation and i heard a loud voice from the throne saying behold the dwelling place of god is with man he will dwell with them and they will be his people and god himself will be with them as their god he will wipe away every tear from their eyes and death shall be no more neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore for the former things have passed away let's take a journey to this place of peace imagine you have just passed over a river and landed on the banks of heaven you feel no anxiety no worry no fear though everything is new to you yes all has been made new even you you look down at your body you hold out your hands and gaze at them turning them over and back that scar from when you cut yourself when you were nine and learning to use a pocket knife is no longer there your knees don't ache your lungs fill deeply your eyes are clear you're not sure but it looks like you might be glowing wonder stirs in your heart as you look up and see huge gates encrusted with beautiful priceless gems you hurry toward them as your heart seems ready to burst with joy you stop and wonder as you enter the gates your eyes trying to take in everything at once it's true it's so very true streets of gold and welcome a sense that you are finally where you belong the smile on your face is just huge as you take it all in you can't wait any longer so you enter the city the new jerusalem the promise you've read about all your life and you see them friends and family who have gone before you they're all there and all the saints of old that you've heard so much about the martyrs those who have had their lives snatched from them by evil because they proclaimed the name of jesus and right there jesus you know it's him he's in the center of all of it and he is looking directly at you a look of such happiness on his face that you are there and this time your heart does burst with joy the sight of your savior overwhelms you and you fall to your face on that glittering golden road nothing else matters now he is with you he is before you he is all around you your wildest imagination when you were on earth did not prepare you for the reality of seeing him in this heavenly place face to face he comes to you and lifts you up and says those words you've longed to hear welcome my child to your heavenly home you don't take your eyes off of him but you can still see that everyone around you is suffused with light and joy just from being in his presence you know that some of them have suffered such pain and sorrow in their earthly lives but here that pain is forgotten you remember what you've read he will wipe away every tear from their eyes and death shall be no more neither shall there be mourning or crying nor pain anymore for the former things have passed away and it's true no one is crying no one looks at anyone else in judgment of them you hear so many different voices all speaking in different tongues and yet you understand them all how can this be everyone together in perfect unity then you remember the rest of that verse behold the dwelling place of god is with man he will dwell with them and they will be his people and god himself will be with them as their god it's because god is their god just as he is your god you see clearly oh so clearly now god has gathered his people to himself and as you look around at all the precious faces before you you understand it was never about you it was always about jesus the people who suffered torture and death because of their faith it wasn't about them it was about jesus they joined in his suffering and now they are with him forever his people with no more pain and no more tears the awesomeness of being in his presence is both overwhelming and satisfying like you'll never need anything ever again and that's the truth of it isn't it you followed jesus faithfully if not perfectly and now you have your reward and it is jesus he's all you've ever needed and you know when you see him face to face that you will never feel sorrow or pain again that's all passed away everything has been made new as you continue gazing at this scene imagine you're breathing that celestial air inhale the presence of the lord exhale worry anxiety and fear feel your feet on those streets of gold see the faces of those who have gone before you cheering you on knowing that there is a place prepared just for you glorious lord jesus i can't wait to see you face to face you are holy and where you are is where i want to be thank you that you have prepared a place for me and that you are waiting for me at those heavenly gates there is so much pain and misery here on earth and i long to be where there are no more tears and no more pain but i know that as long as you have me here on earth that you want me to be telling others about you give me courage to talk to others keep my eyes fixed on you and my heart always turned toward home my true home amen tonight's sleep story is from daniel chapter 2 verse 1. king nebuchadnezzar the ancient king of babylon was having dreams that troubled him they were so troubling he could not sleep our time tonight is designed to promote more peaceful and comforting dreams like nebuchadnezzar if you have been troubled with nightmares or night terrors in the past this sleep meditation will help you rest in the comfort of the lord perhaps worries anxieties and troubled dreams are keeping you awake you may find yourself tossing and turning night after night your spirit is troubled and sleep has escaped you take a few quiet moments take a few quiet moments to release all of your worries anxieties and troubles to the lord go ahead release them now your heavenly father is waiting to take them from you tonight before we begin our story from daniel chapter 2 i let's begin tonight's story one night during the second year of his reign nebuchadnezzar had such disturbing dreams that he couldn't sleep he called in his magicians enchanters sorcerers and astrologers and he demanded that they tell him what he had dreamed as they stood before the king he said i have had a dream that deeply troubles me and i must know what it means then the astrologers answered the king in aramaic long live the king tell us the dream and we will tell you what it means but the king said to the astrologers i am serious about this if you don't tell me what my dream was and what it means you will be torn limb from limb and your houses will be turned into heaps of rubble but if you tell me what i dreamed and what the dream means i will give you many wonderful gifts and honors just tell me the dream and what it means they said again please your majesty tell us the dream and we will tell you what it means the king replied i know what you are doing you're stalling for time because you know i am serious when i say if you don't tell me the dream you are doomed so you have conspired to tell me lies hoping i will change my mind but tell me the dream and then i'll know that you can tell me what it means the astrologers replied to the king no one on earth can tell the king his dream and no king however great and powerful has ever asked such a thing of any magician enchanter or astrologer the king's demand is impossible no one except the gods can tell you your dream and they do not live here among people the king was furious when he heard this and he ordered that all the wise men of babylon be executed and because of the king's decree men were sent to find and kill daniel and his friends when arioch the commander of the king's guard came to kill them daniel handled the situation with wisdom and discretion he asked arioch why has the king issued such a harsh decree so aryak told him all that had happened daniel went at once to see the king and requested more time to tell the king what the dream meant then daniel went home and told his friends hanania mishael and azria what had happened he urged them to ask the god of heaven to show them his mercy by telling them the secret so they would not be executed along with the other wise men of babylon that night the secret was revealed to daniel in a vision then daniel praised the god of heaven he said praise the name of god forever and ever for he has all wisdom and power he controls the course of world events he removes kings and sets up other kings he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars he reveals deep and mysterious things and knows what lies hidden i thank and praise you god of my ancestors for you have given me wisdom and strength you have told me what we asked of you and revealed to us what the king demanded king nebuchadnezzar was not a king devoted to the lord in fact ezra chapter 5 verse 12 recalls how nebuchadnezzar rose up against the lord and his people instead of humbling himself before god he exalted himself allow god to create a peaceful space in your mind god your creator loves you deeply turn your heart to the god of peace the god who is able to bring you relaxing sleep he is your comforter and friend part of nebuchadnezzar's distress was that he didn't understand the meaning of his dreams he was anxious for someone to help him figure them out however he didn't ask for the lord's wisdom or revelation his first course of action was to seek worldly advice counsel from people who were not walking with god when it comes to your worries and troubled thoughts you can go to the lord for answers you can seek his wisdom you can ask him for divine revelation rest in god's wisdom i invite you into this peaceful space with god as you continue to breathe softly in and out rest securely in the presence of the lord know that the holy spirit covers you with his love joy and peace remain in his presence as i pray over you heavenly father i pray for your covering over this beloved person tonight by your holy spirit i ask that you shelter them in the palm of your hand lord i know that you care deeply for them you love them you created them you long for them to have peace the peace that comes from knowing you please help this beloved child release all of their burdens to you now one by one loosen their fingers and help them release their tight grasp on the worries of this life assure them of your great love and provision as they place their trust in you thank you lord thank you for covering them in your presence tonight in jesus's holy name amen in daniel chapter 2 verse 3 king nebuchadnezzar said i have had a dream and my spirit is anxious to know what it means his spirit was anxious his anxiousness prevented him from sleeping let there be no hint of anxiousness in your spirit tonight allow yourself to be delivered from it by the mighty hand of god he knows all about your life he cares for you his spirit overcomes every hint of anxiousness that resides in your spirit release your anxiety now there is a deep sense of beauty as you enjoy the embrace of your father in heaven you feel peace and contentment like never before [Music] allow your breath to feel the serenity of his peace there's an old hymn that has the sweet refrain whom shall we trust but thee o lord where rest but on thy faithful word none ever called on thee in vain give peace o god give peace again there is no one else who is more trustworthy than jesus christ our lord let the word trust settle deep in your heart faithful word tonight no one ever calls on god in vain for when we call on him he hears us he never grows weary of our prayers our petitions are like sweet incense rising before his throne he hears us when we pray allow your silent prayers to rise like incense before god give peace o god give peace again yes lord give us your peace tonight give us peace in place of our troubling thoughts rest in the assurance of god's peace for a few moments finally after turning to the wrong advice and getting nowhere king nebuchadnezzar sought wise counsel from daniel daniel was god's beloved servant set apart in holiness and righteousness daniel was committed to seeking god first in everything chapter 2 verse 20 of daniel says blessed be the name of god forever and ever for wisdom and might are his wisdom and might are his wisdom and might are his let those words sink deep in your heart tonight inhale and exhale breathe in god's wisdom and the strength of his might daniel also said this about the lord god reveals deep and secret things he knows what is in the darkness and light dwells with him god reveals deep and secret things nothing is hidden from him he sees it all nothing is too difficult for him he knows the answers he has a plan for you you can trust in him trust in him tonight the lord knows what resides in the darkness you don't need to be afraid for light dwells with him he will expose every hidden thing in him is light true light that is pure and holy remain in the light of god's holiness for several moments please let me pray over you father god i come before you on behalf of this beloved person tonight i ask that every troubled thought be wiped away by the comforting presence of your spirit lord i pray that this child of yours would not be fearful about anything and might and have now made known to me what we asked of you for you have made known to us the king's demand daniel's first response was thanksgiving and praise let your spirit respond with thanksgiving and praise for several moments god inhabits the praise of his people our worship is a beautiful sound to his ears hear the hushed sound of your spirit worshiping god's spirit as you rest in him tonight when sleep eludes us we can ask god to reveal what is troubling our dreams he is the great revealer he is the great restorer he is our beautiful redeemer feel the presence of your you may need tonight they were in need of safe harbor every ship has treasure of some kind and you are no different you are precious cargo as you prepare for sleep know that you are anchored in the waters of freedom and have a carte blanche invitation to explore the depths of god with a great liberty [Music] and no you are welcome here before our voyage begins place yourself in the comfort of your bed or a place where you can sleep relax each part of your body close your eyes for the next few moments focus only on your breath if your mind wanders on the events of your day and it probably will gently pull it back in feel your breath going in and out notice the way your arms are resting on the bed your feet feel the coolness of the soft sheets allow god to nurture you so you can get the rest your mind and body need before setting sail any good captain needs to have all the necessary tools otherwise this ship could sail right into unfriendly waters and never reach the harbor the christian sailor uses scripture and prayer as a nautical guide with that let's turn to prayer if you are anxious still your heart we pause to remember that we are invited into the presence of god and to commune with him it's the same god who created the universe and hung the stars who guided the sailors of old come home to the deep presence of the lord i come before you now help me to continue my journey and trust knowing that you will never fail me and that your divine purpose in my life cannot be stopped by the enemy of this world i pray that you will give me a very real sense of your presence and all that is going on in my life and what i am going through equip my body my vessel for the days and weeks ahead i pray that you will fill my sails with your peace and will open my eyes to know that you are with me despite the fierce storm that is all around me help me to look to you and only you for strength and shelter lord help me to know that my hope and my safe harbor are found in you and your protection as i prepare for sleep please relax my body send me thoughts that will quiet and calm my mind and reassure my spirit that you and your angels are watching and singing over me please send your angels into my dreams with messages that will help me become healthier give me the faith [Music] oh lord give me the faith i need to trust that you will intervene in any situation specifically to say to you as you sleep in psalm 107 we find a group who gets caught in a storm while on a business trip at sea imagine you are part of this group of fishermen psalm 107 23-32 describes the scene some went down to the sea and ships doing business on the great waters they saw the deeds of the lord his wondrous works in the deep for he commanded and raised the stormy wind which lifted up the waves of the sea they mounted up to heaven they went down to the depths their courage melted away in their evil plight they reeled and staggered like drunkards and were at their wit's end as you look around you see boats headed in different directions some are headed out to sea while the others are headed for port others seem to be merely drifting going one way and then another oblivious to the changing conditions stormy clouds begin to roll in blocking the bright sun it silently looms over your crew in anticipation you scramble across the teetering deck to your assigned position shadows swallow the last rays of light and thunder crackles through the air rain begins to pour furiously drowning any sight of certainty monstrous waves of contrasting shades slam your boat the waves break around the rocks in the shallows their foamy crests becoming chaotic lace over the blue mesmerized by the swirling tides the movement of the water choreographs your thoughts as you call upon the lord our passage continues then they cry out to the lord in their trouble and he delivered them from their distress he made the storm be still and the waves of the sea were hushed as things around you calm down you notice that some of the other ships reflect the wear and tear from weathering the storm others though are not damaged they are taking pleasure cruises or are bound for their own predetermined destinations you are thankful you've crossed the rough waters the waves have subsided yet the air is damp and foggy through the fog a glimmer of light shines dimly the golden beam slowly rotates it's a lighthouse navigating weary captains and their crew to a safe harbor this beacon of hope has stood strong and weathered the storm the psalmist writes then they were glad that the waters were quiet and he brought them to their desired haven let them thank the lord for his steadfast love for his wondrous works to the children of man let them extol him in the congregation of the people and praise him in the assembly of the elders they rejoiced when the waves grew quiet then he guided them to the harbor they longed for let them give thanks to the lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the counsel of the elders as you drift further into a deep sleep allow the gratitude in your heart that god has delivered you to safety flow out to him while your cargo has bounced around you are a little rattled but you've survived the worst of it you are in one piece you slowly steer your boat deeper into the harbor where you can see more clearly nestled in a small inlet as a mooring perfect for your long anticipated respite you know that if boats are not secured they can drift away if a storm occurs at night so you make sure your tie lines are tight now that you and your fellow fishermen are securely anchored may restful sleep come your way you feel a gentle rock of your vessel from side to side tiny waves gently move along the outside of your boat your soul finds comfort god's hand protects you he has delivered you through the storm i invite you now to say in your spirit that you are open to hear the truth of god's word a word that might be a word from him in your inmost being through your sleeping hours he stilled the storm to a murmur and the waves of the sea were hushed they rejoiced when the waves grew quiet then he guided them to the harbor they longed for let them give thanks to the lord for his faithful love and his wonderful works for all humanity let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the counsel of the elders while on the depths of the sea they saw the deeds of the lord the sailors observed firsthand the power and fury of nature he describes a powerful storm the ship of your heart is filled with treasure filled with thoughts of god which are more valuable than the greatest pearl the finest cut diamond or any other priceless treasure man could possibly find or conceive of so as you traverse the seas of life and in times of trouble and turmoil do not focus on the evil at hand or possible evil to come as matthew and luke remind rest and be anchored in the rock of my heart an anchor which can not slip focus on me and you will stay afloat god is your safe harbor of consistent hope and endless love israel and by the divine providence of god his eyes beheld the newborn king this is what simeon said when he took jesus in his arms lord now you're letting your servant depart in peace according to your word from my eyes have seen your salvation which you have prepared before the face of all peoples a light to bring revelation to the gentiles in the glory of your people israel according to the word of the lord jesus came to be the consolation of israel a light to the gentiles and the glory of his people he is your consolation your light and your glory through comfort compassion relief and strength jesus casts all anxiety away and replaces it with perfect peace there is no need to be anxious anymore every need you have is covered in jesus he comforts you he offers compassion and relief from every worry he strengthens you and leads you into the assurance that he has everything under control release everything to him when anxiety was great within me your consolation brought me joy rest in the joy of the lord feel his peace wash over you like a healing bomb [Music] in him you have received healing and renewal the old things are gone and the new has come all anxieties are taken away and replaced by god's consolation of peace in psalm 119 we hear these words remember your promise to me it is my only hope your promise revives me it comforts me in all my troubles remember god's few hundred other followers of jesus you're one of those followers but it doesn't seem crowded everyone around you is patient and happy and full of cheer it's as if they've waited all their lives for this moment it's as if their people have waited centuries for this time in history no one's in a rush no one is pushy they're savoring every second a mother and her young son are in front of you laughing the boy he appears to be about five turns around and gives you an innocent wave you smile back near them is a short gray-haired elderly woman she asks the question everyone else is thinking is he the messiah no one answers but you've heard enough stories about jesus healing the sick and giving sight to the blind that you've already formed your opinion he claims to be god's son and you believe it at the head of the crowd is jesus himself surrounded by peter james and john and the other disciples he's led his followers to an area near the sea of galilee it's a beautiful day and you're enjoying the walk it's warm and mostly sunny with only a few white wispy clouds high overhead they're moving ever so slowly across the sky as if they too are hanging around and watching jesus wanting a glimpse of the messiah the warm sunshine massages your skin and a cool breeze off the sea of galilee ensures you don't get too hot the breeze carries within a dozen earthy aromas water and dirt and freshwater fish and even the unmistakable scent of wildflowers from the nearby shore to your right you spot two fishermen in a small sailboat pulling their net up from the sea of galilee they've caught perhaps a dozen fish today and you watch as they carefully pluck each one from the webbing suddenly one of the fishermen looks in your general direction and motions to his friend who looks your way too you quickly realize that they're not looking at you but at jesus both men rushed to the back of the boat and grabbed their paddles they hurriedly placed them just under the surface of the water and began rowing to shore they're wanting to see jesus and if they hurry they will up ahead on your path you spot a squirrel searching for food within the rocks it's cleaning its face oblivious to the crowd around it you hear a joyful child's voice commenting on the squirrel's bushy tail and furry ears all of a sudden the squirrel dashes away from you and toward the front of the crowd perhaps it's chasing an insect or maybe it's just like those fishermen and it wants to see jesus too a few minutes have passed and jesus has led everyone to a hill overlooking the sea of galilee it's filled with large and small boulders alike with green grass growing everywhere else please gather around he tells the crowd he's sitting halfway up the hill on a large flat rock underneath a tall juniper tree the hill is spacious enough to give everyone plenty of room just as important it's quiet enough so that anyone in the crowd can hear you find a small boulder to sit on to listen to jesus he's about seven long steps directly in front of you although the twelve disciples are the closest to jesus peter is sitting on a rock to your right he's laughing and talking to andrew his brother jesus is patient as everyone continues to find a place to sit an older woman sits down to your left in an empty spot of green grass she appears to be in her 60s and she begins chatting her husband she tells you is a farmer things have been tight lately during the drought her brow is filled with wrinkles she looks anxious it hasn't rained in days she says i'm worried she asks you if you think jesus is the messiah you smile at her and give an approving nod a hush quickly falls over the crowd jesus is speaking blessed are the poor in spirit he says for theirs is the kingdom of heaven blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be satisfied blessed are the merciful for they shall receive mercy blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see god blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of god blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account rejoice and be glad for your reward is great in heaven for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you you are the salt of the earth but if salt has lost its taste how shall its saltiness be restored it is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet you are the light of the world a city set on a hill cannot be hidden nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a stand and it gives light to all in the house in the same way let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your father who is in heaven jesus has been speaking for about 15 minutes you're struck by his calm demeanor his knowledge of scripture his love for the people above all you're struck by his wisdom he's unlike any rabbi you've seen his words seem as if they're straight from god himself your mind begins drifting as you think about jesus role in your life a thousand questions swirl in your head if jesus is the messiah then what does that mean for your future what does it mean for your people is he the answer to every problem in your life is he god suddenly jesus looks straight at you and smiles he continues preaching but you think to yourself was he reading my mind did he know what i was thinking whatever the case you continue listening no one can serve two masters jesus says for you will hate one and love the other you will be devoted to one and despise the other you cannot serve both god and money that is why i tell you not to worry about everyday life whether you have enough food and drink or enough clothes to wear isn't life more than food and your body more than clothing look at the birds he says pointing to a few sparrows on the tree limbs above him you don't plant or harvest or store food in barns for your heavenly father feeds them and aren't you far more valuable to him than they are can all your worries add a single moment to your life and why worry about your clothing jesus says pointing to the valley below they don't work or make their clothing yet solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are and if god cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow he will certainly care for you why do you have so little faith so don't worry about these things saying what will we eat what will we drink what will we wear these things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers but your heavenly father already knows all your needs seek the kingdom of god above all else and live righteously and he will give you everything you need so don't worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will bring its own worries today's trouble is enough for today an hour has passed jesus has finished preaching he and his disciples are huddled together further up the hill about 20 paces from you straight ahead some of jesus followers have walked back to their villages others though are still gathered on the hillside in groups of two or three discussing this sermon on the mountain the elderly woman who sat to your left is one of those who has hung around she's smiling now her demeanor has radically changed she's no longer worrying she approaches you with tears of joy and shouts the lord will provide the lord will take care of us she points to the western horizon a storm is building a cool wind is blowing your direction much needed rain is on the way you look up at jesus and his followers who are also looking at the growing storm he briefly glances down at you and smiles tears of joy stream down your face as you recall jesus words look at the birds they don't plant or harvest or store food in barns for your heavenly father feeds them and aren't you far more valuable to him than they are can all your worries add a single moment to your life and why worry about your clothing look at the lilies of the field and how they grow they don't work or make their clothing yet solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are and if god cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow he will certainly care for you seek the kingdom of god above all else and live righteously and he will give you everything you need we transition back to the present day let's meditate on the boat and is welcomed by them they gather around him pressing in on every side desperate to get close to him a woman is in the crowd a dear woman who has been bleeding for 12 long years can you imagine she has suffered for so long without relief she has spent her life savings on doctors and treatments hoping something will work she has been isolated and outcast as a woman who is unclean by every standard of the jewish law she should not be there this day however she has nowhere else to go she is desperate to find healing and she knows there is one who can make her whole perhaps you have felt unclean or isolated maybe you don't believe you should receive anything from god if so please release those thoughts to the savior tonight he has washed away your guilt and shame he has torn the veil so that you can enter the holy of holies he invites you to come boldly to the throne of grace gracious god please release this beloved listener of all doubt tonight as they come before you remove any obstacle that stands in their way restore their faith in you leading them to your throne fully surrendered to you in the name of jesus i pray even though the woman was deemed unclean by the jewish law the law of love prevailed that day her faith in jesus took her to galilee despite the label others had placed on her and in faith she waited for just the right time to touch the hem of his robe her story is recorded in luke chapter 8 verses 43 and 44. now a woman having a flow of blood for 12 years who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any came from behind and touched the border of his garment and immediately her flow of blood stopped immediately she was healed with one slight touch she received the power of jesus mighty to heal you see as jesus the great physician walked past she knew without a doubt that he was able to heal [Music] he is able as ephesians 3 20 says he is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine according to his power that is at work within us rest in that comforting truth tonight gracious god healer and friend we come humbly before you thanking you for being with us as this beloved person seeks you tonight help them to find your grace and peace remind them that they are created to seek you reach for you and find you for you are not far from them [Music] i pray for this dear person to be assured of the healing power of your presence i ask lord that you heal every affliction every illness and every issue they might have in the mighty name of jesus and by the power of your spirit please move through this person's body to bring full healing and restoration thank you father in jesus name amen after the woman touched the hem of jesus's robe he stopped and asked who touched me none of his disciples could answer him in fact they questioned the lord by saying master the multitude strong and press you and you say who touched me but jesus said somebody touched me for i perceived power going out from me jesus already knew who the woman was yet he stopped to ask who had touched him he wanted her to come forward in faith jesus wants you to come to him in faith as well he invites you to ask of him in john chapter 14 jesus said whatever you ask in my name that i will do that the father may be glorified in the sun if you ask anything in my name i will do it this heart lord needs your cleansing power this mind lord needs your thoughts of praise this body lord needs your healing touch this soul lord needs your hands to raise be still before the lord tonight resting in his love towards you trust him to know exactly what you need trust him to heal you when the woman saw that she was not hidden from jesus she came trembling and falling down before him she declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him and how she was healed immediately then jesus said to her daughter be of good cheer your faith has made you well go in peace hear jesus's words again be of good cheer your faith has made you well go in peace your faith as small as a tiny mustard seed is enough believe that jesus is mighty to heal from every sickness and pain he is more than able to make you well do not give up keep pressing in keep taking hold of the hem of his garment believing he can heal you lord jesus i pray for this beloved person tonight hopeful for your hand of healing over their infirmities please lord renew their hope in you never let them doubt that you are able to heal give them strength comfort and direction as they walk in faithfulness to you i ask that you work through their body through every fiber of their being to heal and restore them to health no matter what lord i pray that this child will give you all the glory honor and praise i pray that they will be a living testimony of what you've done for them be with them lord be their comfort and their peace i prayed these things in your holy amen we invite you to listen in as david determines that there is no reason and will act on their behalf even as your beloved sleeps we pray you would direct their dreams protect them from their own stresses and worries by taking them on your own strong shoulders in jesus christ we pray amen with that let's begin our story david had been on the run for quite a while now he had been loyal to king saul but saul had betrayed him and sought to kill him by this david knew that king saul was not just going against him but against god saul and david both knew that god had chosen david to succeed saul yet saul refused to accept that to combat his fears david liked to write songs at one time he had written songs the comfort king saw yet now he wrote them to comfort writing down what was true about god helped him remember who god was which put his own fears in their place david pulled the slab of damp clay in front of him and then picked up the stiff reed to use as his writing tool he stuck the reed in his mouth for a moment as he thought as was often the case the words began to flow freely the lord is my light and my salvation whom shall i fear the lord is the stronghold of my life of whom shall i be afraid what comfort these words brought him as he sat in a dark cave he reflected on how the lord was his light the lord was the one who would ultimately rescue him david knew better than to trust in his own puny power and as he spent his life on the run it brought him great joy to remember that the lord is his stronghold and that was much more secure than the most powerful fortress your own fears become greatly diminished since god is your light salvation and stronghold david looked out of the cave's mouth and could picture saul and his mighty army coming after him he took a deep breath and wrote when the wicked advance against me to devour me it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall though an army besiege me my heart will not fear the war break out against me even then i will be confident picture the lord standing at your side with his mighty heavenly army coming against your fear let that image give you confidence david bowed his head to pray and ponder what did he want from the lord as he thought about it he knew with certainty one thing i ask from the lord this only do i seek that i may dwell in the house of the lord all the days of my life to gaze on the beauty of the lord and to seek him in his temple more than anything david wanted to dwell in the house of the lord which meant that he wanted to be in his presence david knew that god was with him even in this dark cave but he longed to worship him publicly before all of israel his shoulders slumped as he thought about how he was barred from the places he'd come to love but then another thought came to him as he looked out over the fields of israel even on the run he was able to see god's handiwork yet he knew that the lord was even more beautiful than his creation he found great comfort in that the beauty of the lord is overwhelming and awe inspiring with these thoughts david sat up straighter and wrote for in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me at his sacred tent i will sacrifice with shouts of joy i will sing and make music to the lord the high ground was the best place for battle and every warrior wanted possession of it the lord kept him safe sheltered him and set him upon the high rock even if he wasn't on the literal high ground he was certainly on the spiritual high ground god has set you on the high ground spiritually and you can make music in your heart to him david stood up and walked outside the cave he suddenly felt overwhelmed with all he'd been through he lifted his arms and said aloud hear my voice when i call lord be merciful to me and answer me my heart says of you seek his face your face lord i will seek that's what he was doing seeking the lord's face he had bowed his head but now he lifted it up do not hide your face from me do not turn your servant away in anger you have been my helper do not reject me or forsake me god my savior david had cried out to god in anguish his emotions getting the best of him but now he put his arms down and put one foot but now he put his arms down and put one foot down firmly to help his body and heart follow his mind though my father and mother forsake me the lord will receive me this is what he knew to be true even those who loved him most would at times fail him but the lord would never turn him away david went back inside the cave he sank down onto the hard floor and thought about saul saul too had at one time worshiped god but now he had turned his back on him david never wanted to be guilty of that he knew how easy it would be to lose heart and confidence in god because of his circumstances so he whispered under his breath teach me your way lord lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors do not turn me over to the desire of my foes for false witnesses rise up against me spouting malicious accusations it helped david to recognize that what others said about him were lies it comforted him to know that god knew the truth yes god knew and was watching over him every moment he would never abandon him for even a second david picked up the reed and wrote boldly i remain confident of this i will see the goodness of the lord in the land of the living he would keep this tablet and read those words often he committed them to memory so that when difficult things happened he would remember the truth that god is good and wants nothing but good for him david didn't know how long it would take for god to vindicate him and put him on the throne he didn't know how long it would take for saul to quit pursuing him but he did know one thing that he would tell himself and those who followed him wait for the lord be strong and take heart and wait for the lord as you drift to sleep let the silence of the night renew and refresh you god is in the silence and wants to whisper encouragement and assurance to your soul he wants you to know his great love for you and fill you with strength even as you sleep as you rest i will pray psalm 27 for you the lord is your light and salvation whom shall you fear the lord is the stronghold of their life of whom shall they be afraid when the wicked advance against them and they feel like they are going to devour them help them to know that it is their enemies and foes who will stumble and fall though an army knowledge makes them shout for joy it makes them sing and make music to you lord hear their voice when they call lord be merciful and answer let their heart say seek your face and let them do so even in sleep i know that you will not hide your face from them that you will not turn away in anger you have been their helper your faithfulness in the past helps them trust you now you will not reject or forsake them god our savior even those who love them will fail them but you will never fail them lord teach them your way lead them in a straight path because of their oppressors if others tell lies against them you will remind them of the truth may they remain confident of this they will see your goodness in the land of the living you almost never do things on their schedule you always do things perfectly at the perfect time because you know everything help them to remember this lord help them to wait patiently for you help them to be strong and take heart and wait for you lord in jesus name i pray amen as you hear this prayer from psalm 51 feel yourself relaxing falling back and surrendering yourself into the loving and forgiving arms of jesus releasing the weight of your worldly cares as you focus on the likeness of the gospel the good news of the death burial and resurrection of your lord and savior jesus christ let me pray for you now o peaceful and heavenly father you give this one your child sleep for the refreshing of their soul and body grant this one this gift tonight i pray keep them in that perfect peace which you have promised to them whose mind is fixed on you and give them such a sense of your presence that in these moments of silence they may enjoy the blessed assurance of your love through you o peaceful and loving father be merciful to this one oh god because of your constant love because of your great mercy wipe away their sins wash away all evil and make them clean from their sin tonight tonight let them hear the sounds of joy and gladness create in them tonight a pure heart o god give them again the joy that comes from your salvation god grant this one peace so they can sleep soundlessly and awaken with a renewed spirit ready to face the day knows your needs seek the kingdom of god above all else and he will give you everything you need so don't be afraid little one for it gives your father great happiness to give you the kingdom dear disciples are all around you you hear jesus tell you to prepare prepare to cross over the sea of galilee you watch as jesus falls asleep jesus your savior curls up in the boat to sleep you sit next to him you lean on him as your savior rests the wind begins to hit your face the spray from the waves you begin to feel water at your feet you wake up your master who is sleeping you see the look of peace in his eyes you are in awe of that peace jesus waves his hands perhaps without taking his eyes off of you you feel the wind stop the waves are gone jesus whispers to you my child have faith in me my child believe in me you feel yourself falling asleep in his arms as his peace surrounds you dear peaceful and restful father give this child tonight your faith give this child tonight your peace no wind in their face no mist from waves no water at their feet let them hear your peaceful voice let them hear your loving voice your powerful protecting voice a voice that calms storms a voice that brings peace a voice that brings rest sleep pace your breathing as you listen to the word of god being prayed softly over you breathe slow and deep as you hear god's words for you tonight as you lay down to sleep do not be afraid tonight as you lay down tonight let your sleep be sweet in peace god will be with you tonight as you sleep you are not alone god is with you and you will be safe as you whatever has been bothering you today release into the hands of your heavenly father trust him to take care of it he loves you so much he doesn't want you to carry heavy burdens that you were never meant to carry feel the gentle weight of your covers the pillow beneath your head the soothing night sounds around you relax and breathe [Music] keep your breathing slow and steady as you listen to the sound of my voice i want to take you to a place of unfathomable beauty and peace some think heaven is just a figment of your imagination but you know that it is real and you know that it is your true home your eternal country the place your heart longs for above all else sometimes the egg to be there is so strong but rest rest knowing that it is your future eternal home we all have experienced pain in this world we all have shed tears but there will come a time when there will be no more pain and no more tears listen to these verses from the book of revelation and i heard a loud voice from the throne saying behold the dwelling place of god is with man he will dwell with them and they will be his people and god himself will be with them as their god he will wipe away every tear from their eyes and death shall be no more neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore for the former things have passed away [Music] let's take a journey to this place of peace imagine you have just passed over a river and landed on the banks of heaven you feel no anxiety no worry no fear though everything is new to you yes all has been made new even you you look down at your body you hold out your hands and gaze at them turning them over and back that scar from when you cut yourself when you were nine and learning to use a pocket knife is no longer there your knees don't ache your lungs fill deeply your eyes are clear you're not sure but it looks like you might be glowing wonder stirs in your heart as you look up and see huge gates encrusted with beautiful priceless gems you hurry toward them as your heart seems ready to burst with joy you stop and wonder as you enter the gates your eyes trying to take in everything at once it's true it's so very true streets of gold and welcome a sense that you are finally where you belong the smile on your face is just huge as you take it all in you can't wait any longer so you enter the city the new jerusalem the promise you've read about all your life and you see them your friends and family who have gone before you they're all there and all the saints of old that you've heard so much about the martyrs those who have had their lives snatched from them by evil because they proclaimed the name of jesus and right there jesus you know it's him he's in the center of all of it and he is looking directly at you a look of such happiness on his face that you are there and this time your heart does burst with joy the sight of your savior overwhelms you and you fall to your face on that glittering golden road nothing else matters now he is with you he is before you he is all around you your wildest imagination when you were on earth did not prepare you for the reality of seeing him in this heavenly place face to face he comes to you and lifts you up and says those words you've longed to hear welcome my child to your heavenly home you don't take your eyes off of him but you can still see that everyone around you is suffused with light and joy just from being in his presence you know that some of them have suffered such pain and sorrow in their earthly lives but here that pain is forgotten you remember what you've read he will wipe away every tear from their eyes and death shall be no more neither shall there be mourning or crying nor pain anymore for the former things have passed away and it's true no one is crying no one looks at anyone else in judgment of them you hear so many different voices all speaking in different tongues and yet you understand them all how can this be everyone together in perfect unity then you remember the rest of that verse behold the dwelling place of god is with man he will dwell with them and they will be his people and god himself will be with them as their god it's because god is their god just as he is your god you see clearly oh so clearly now god has gathered his people to himself and as you look around at all the precious faces before you you understand it was never about you it was always about jesus the people who suffered torture and death because of their faith it wasn't about them it was about jesus they joined in his suffering and now they are with him forever his people with no more pain and no more tears the awesomeness of being in his presence is both overwhelming and satisfying like you'll never need anything ever again and that's the truth of it isn't it you followed jesus faithfully if not perfectly and now you have your reward and it is jesus he's all you've ever needed and you know when you see him face to face that you will never feel sorrow or pain again that's all passed away everything has been made new as you continue gazing at this scene imagine you're breathing that celestial air inhale the presence of the lord exhale worry anxiety and fear feel your feet on those streets of gold see the faces of those who have gone before you cheering you on knowing that there is a place prepared just for you [Music] glorious lord jesus i can't wait to see you face to face you are holy and where you are is where i want to be thank you that you have prepared a place for me and that you are waiting for me at those heavenly gates there is so much pain and misery here on earth and i long to be where there are no more tears and no more pain but i know that as long as you have me here on earth that you want me to be telling others about you give me courage to talk to others keep my eyes fixed on you and my heart always turned toward home my true home amen tonight's sleep story is from daniel chapter 2 verse 1. king nebuchadnezzar the ancient king of babylon was having dreams that troubled him they were so troubling he could not sleep our time tonight is designed to promote more peaceful and comforting dreams like nebuchadnezzar if you have been troubled with nightmares or night terrors in the past this sleep meditation will help you rest in the comfort of the lord perhaps worries anxieties and troubled dreams are keeping you awake you may find yourself tossing and turning night after night your spirit is troubled and sleep has escaped you take a few quiet moments take a few quiet moments to release all of your worries anxieties and troubles to the lord go ahead release them now your heavenly father is waiting to take them from you tonight before we begin our story from daniel chapter 2 i encourage you to get comfortable relax every muscle in your body starting with your shoulders and moving all the way down to your feet release the worries of the day take a few that says to submit yourselves therefore to god resist the devil and he will flee from you father god please continue to teach me how i can stand against any future invasive nightmares in my sleep and what i need to learn so they don't recur thank you heavenly father for being faithful and good and for hearing my prayers for help in the name of jesus i forbid satan from coming against me in my sleep with that let's begin tonight's story one night during the second year of his reign nebuchadnezzar had such disturbing dreams that he couldn't sleep he called in his magicians enchanters sorcerers and astrologers and he demanded that they tell him what he had dreamed as they stood before the king he said i have had a dream that deeply troubles me and i must know what it means then the astrologers answered the king in aramaic long live the king tell us the dream and we will tell you what it means but the king said to the astrologers i am serious about this if you don't tell me what my dream was and what it means you will be torn limb from limb and your houses will be turned into heaps of rubble but if you tell me what i dreamed and what the dream means i will give you many wonderful gifts and honors just tell me the dream and what it means they said again please your majesty tell us the dream and we will tell you what it means the king replied i know what you are doing you're stalling for time because you know i am serious when i say if you don't tell me the dream you are doomed so you have conspired to tell me lies hoping i will change my mind but tell me the dream and then i'll know that you can tell me what it means the astrologers replied to the king no one on earth can tell the king his dream and no king however great and powerful has ever asked such a thing of any magician enchanter or astrologer the king's demand is impossible no one except the gods can tell you your dream and they do not live here among people the king was furious when he heard this and he ordered that all the wise men of babylon be executed and because of the king's decree men were sent to find and kill daniel and his friends when arioch the commander of the king's guard came to kill them daniel handled the situation with wisdom and discretion he asked arioch why has the king issued such a harsh decree so arioch told him all that had happened daniel went at once to see the king and requested more time to tell the king what the dream meant then daniel went home and told his friends hanania mishael and azria what had happened he urged them to ask the god of heaven to show them his mercy by telling them the secret so they would not be executed along with the other wise men of babylon that night the secret was revealed to daniel in a vision then daniel praised the god of heaven he said praise the name of god forever and ever for he has all wisdom and power he controls the course of world events he removes kings and sets up other kings he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars he reveals deep and mysterious things and knows what lies hidden i thank and praise you god of my ancestors for you have given me wisdom and strength you have told me what we asked of you and revealed to us what the king demanded king nebuchadnezzar was not a king devoted to the lord in fact ezra chapter 5 verse 12 recalls how nebuchadnezzar rose up against the lord and his people instead of humbling himself before god he exalted himself allow god to create a peaceful space in your mind god your creator loves you deeply turn your heart to the god of peace the god who is able to bring you relaxing sleep he is your comforter and friend part of nebuchadnezzar's distress was that he didn't understand the meaning of his dreams he was anxious for someone to help him figure them out however he didn't ask for the lord's wisdom or revelation his first course of action was to seek worldly advice counsel from people who were not walking with god when it comes to your worries and troubled thoughts you can go to the lord for answers you can seek his wisdom you can ask him for divine revelation rest in god's wisdom i invite you into this peaceful space with god as you continue to breathe softly in and out rest securely in the presence of the lord know that the holy spirit covers you with his love joy and peace remain in his presence as i pray over you heavenly father i pray for your covering over this beloved person tonight by your holy spirit i ask that you shelter them in the palm of your hand lord i know that you care deeply for them you love them you created them you long for them to have peace the peace that comes from knowing you please help this beloved child release all of their burdens to you now one by one loosen their fingers and help them release their tight grasp on the worries of this life assure them of your great love and provision as they place their trust in you thank you lord thank you for covering them in your presence tonight in jesus's holy name amen in daniel chapter 2 verse 3 king nebuchadnezzar said i have had a dream and my spirit is anxious to know what it means his spirit was anxious his anxiousness prevented him from sleeping let there be no hint of anxiousness in your spirit tonight allow yourself to be delivered from it by the mighty hand of god he knows all about your life he cares for you his spirit overcomes every hint of anxiousness that resides in your spirit release your anxiety now there is a deep sense of beauty as you enjoy the embrace of your father in heaven you feel peace and contentment like never before allow your breath to feel the serenity of his peace there's an old hymn that has the sweet refrain whom shall we trust but thee oh lord where rest but on thy faithful word none ever called on thee in vain give peace o god give peace again there is no one else who is more trustworthy than jesus christ our lord let the word trust settle deep in your heart tonight as you breathe softly in and out there is no other place where you can rest more deeply than on god's faithful word his promises are true his covenant is everlasting rest deeply on his faithful word tonight no one ever calls on god in vain for when we call on him he hears us he never grows weary of our prayers our petitions are like sweet incense rising before his throne he hears us when we pray allow your silent prayers to rise like incense before god give peace oh god give peace again yes lord give us your peace tonight give us peace in place of our troubling thoughts rest in the assurance of god's peace for a few moments finally after turning to the wrong advice and getting nowhere king nebuchadnezzar sought wise counsel from daniel daniel was god's beloved servant set apart in holiness and righteousness daniel was committed to seeking god first in everything chapter 2 verse 20 of daniel says blessed be the name of god forever and ever for wisdom and might are his wisdom and might are his wisdom and might are his let those words sink deep in your heart tonight inhale and exhale breathe in god's wisdom and the strength of his might daniel also said this about the lord god reveals deep and secret things he knows what is in the darkness and light dwells with him god reveals deep and secret things nothing is hidden from him he sees it all nothing is too difficult for him he knows the answers he has a plan for you you can trust in him trust in him tonight the lord knows what resides in the darkness you don't need to be afraid for light dwells with him he will expose every hidden thing in him is light true light that is pure and holy remain in the light of god's holiness for several moments please let me pray over you father god i come before you on behalf of this beloved person tonight i ask that every troubled thought be wiped away by the comforting presence of your spirit lord i pray that this child of yours would not be fearful about anything i ask that they rest in your light the true light that overcomes all darkness in the name of your son jesus i pray just as the lord gave daniel wisdom concerning king nebuchadnezzar's troubling dreams he gives dwelling in god's healing rest tonight after daniel sought wisdom from god the lord answered him daniel's response was i thank you and praise you o god of my fathers you have given me wisdom and might and have now made known to me what we asked of you for you have made known to us the king's demand daniel's first response was thanksgiving and praise let your spirit respond with thanksgiving and praise for several moments god inhabits the praise of his people our worship is a beautiful sound to his ears hear the hushed sound of your spirit worshiping god's spirit as you rest in him tonight when sleep eludes us we can ask god to reveal what is troubling our dreams he is the great revealer he is the great restorer he is our beautiful redeemer feel the presence of your redeemer with you tonight allow god to settle your heart and mind in christ jesus let go of everything release it all you can trust god to give you deep and peaceful sleep you are covered by his spirit he watches over holy god please cover this precious child of yours tonight blanket them with your spirit your spirit of love peace goodness and gentleness watch over them as they sleep and give them sweet dreams help them to awaken refreshed and ready to face another day we trust that you will continue to shine your light over them we trust that you will replace any troubled dreams with peace you are good you are holy you are just it is in your name that we put our trust tonight amen life sometimes takes us into choppy waters hanging on for dear life we find ourselves off course in need of a safe harbor that may be where you are tonight in need of rest and a word from the lord in your dreams as psalm 107 assures us tonight our destiny will be a place that is safe from the harms of the world like a protected cove you can feel totally comfortable peaceful and anchored in god's protection our scripture involves israel's restoration from exile in babylon just like you may need tonight they were in need of safe harbor every ship has treasure of some kind and you are no different you are precious cargo as you prepare for sleep know that you are anchored in the waters of freedom and have a carte blanche invitation to explore the depths of god with a great liberty and know you are welcome here [Music] before our voyage begins place yourself in the comfort of your bed or a place where you can sleep [Music] relax each part of your body close your eyes for the next few moments focus only on your breath if your mind wanders on the events of your day and it probably will gently pull it back in feel your breath going in and out notice the way your arms are resting on the bed your feet feel the coolness of the soft sheets allow god to nurture you so you can get the rest your mind and body need before setting sail any good captain needs to have all the necessary tools otherwise his ship could sail right into unfriendly waters and never reach the harbor the christian sailor uses scripture and prayer as a nautical guide with that let's turn to prayer if you are anxious still your heart we pause to remember that we are invited into the presence of god and to commune with him it's the same god who created the universe and hung the stars who guided the sailors of old come home to the deep presence of the lord father i come before you now help me to continue my journey and trust knowing that you will never fail me and that your divine purpose in my life cannot be stopped by the enemy of this world i pray that you will give me a very real sense of your presence and all that is going on in my life and what i am going through equip my body my vessel for the days and weeks ahead i pray that you will fill my sails with your peace and will open my eyes to know that you are with me despite the fierce storm that is all around me help me to look to you and only you for strength and shelter lord help me to know that my hope and my safe harbor are found in you and your protection as i prepare for sleep please relax my body send me thoughts that will quiet and calm my mind and reassure my spirit that you and your angels are watching and singing over me please send your angels into my dreams with messages that will help me become healthier give me the faith oh lord give me the faith i need to trust that you will intervene in any situation i present to you in prayer you for always being present with me and for loving me unconditionally and completely knowing that i can confidently rest in a relationship with you oh lord hear the cries of my heart i pray these things in jesus name amen and amen and with that prepare to hear the words from psalm 107 may you open your heart to the possibility that the lord may have something specifically to say to you as you sleep in psalm 107 we find a group who gets caught in a storm while on a business trip at sea imagine you are part of this group of fishermen psalm 107 23-32 describes the scene some went down to the sea and ships doing business on the great waters they saw the deeds of the lord his wondrous works in the deep for he commanded and raised the stormy wind which lifted up the waves of the sea they mounted up to heaven they went down to the depths their courage melted away in their evil plight they reeled and staggered like drunkards and were at their wit's end as you look around you see boats headed in different directions some are headed out to sea while the others are headed for port others seem to be merely drifting going one way and then another oblivious to the changing conditions stormy clouds begin to roll in blocking the bright sun it silently looms over your crew in anticipation you scramble across the teetering deck to your assigned position shadows swallow the last rays of light and thunder crackles through the air rain begins to pour furiously drowning any sight of certainty monstrous waves of contrasting shades slam your boat the waves break around the rocks in the shallows their foamy crests becoming chaotic lace over the blue mesmerized by the swirling tides the movement of the water choreographs your thoughts as you call upon the lord our passage continues then they cry out to the lord in their trouble and he delivered them from their distress he made the storm be still and the waves of the sea were hushed as things around you calm down you notice that some of the other ships reflect the wear and tear from weathering the storm others though are not damaged they are taking pleasure cruises or are bound for their own predetermined destinations you are thankful you've crossed the rough waters the waves have subsided yet the air is damp and foggy through the fog a glimmer of light shines dimly the golden beam slowly rotates it's a lighthouse navigating weary captains and their crew to a safe harbor this beacon of hope has stood strong and weathered the storm the psalmist writes then they were glad that the waters were quiet and he brought them to their desired haven let them thank the lord for his steadfast love for his wondrous works to the children of man let them extol him in the congregation of the people and praise him in the assembly of the elders they rejoiced when the waves grew quiet then he guided them to the harbor they longed for let them give thanks to the lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the counsel of the elders as you drift further into a deep sleep allow the gratitude in your heart that god has delivered you to safety flow out to him while your cargo has bounced around you are a little rattled but you survived the worst of it you are in one piece you slowly steer your boat deeper into the harbor where you can see more clearly nestled in a small inlet as a mooring perfect for your long anticipated respite you know that if boats are not secured they can drift away if a storm occurs at night so you make sure your tie lines are tight now that you and your fellow fishermen are securely anchored may restful sleep come your way you feel a gentle rock of your vessel from side to side tiny waves gently move along the outside of your boat your soul finds comfort god's hand protects you he has delivered you through the storm i invite you now to say in your spirit that you are open to hear the truth of god's word a word that might be a word from him in your inmost being through your sleeping hours he stilled the storm to a murmur and the waves of the sea were hushed they rejoiced when the waves grew quiet then he guided them to the harbor they longed for let them give thanks to the lord for his faithful love and his wonderful works for all humanity let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the counsel of the elders while on the depths of the sea they saw the deeds of the lord the sailors observed firsthand the power and fury of nature he describes a powerful storm the ship of your heart is filled with treasure filled with thoughts of god which are more valuable than the greatest pearl the finest cut diamond or any other priceless treasure man could possibly find or conceive of so as you traverse the seas of life and in times of trouble and turmoil do not focus on the evil at hand or possible evil to come as matthew and luke remind rest and be anchored in the rock of my heart an anchor which cannot slip focus on me and you will stay afloat god is your safe harbor of consistent hope and endless love invite him into the deepest parts of you and he will anchor you to a place where all things work together for good crawl up into the ship of his heart and let him show you how he sees things in this troubled day jesus thank you for being our safe harbor as you drift further and further to sleep rest in his loving arms when the storms rage and the winds blow when the waves are high when our very hearts are shaken strength and courage seem to melt away remember the one and only the one whom the wind and waves obey the lord most high who can calm any storm he speaks peace be still in jesus name amen this sleep to the temple on the same day that mary and joseph brought the baby jesus to be dedicated you see simeon had long awaited the birth of the messiah the consolation of israel and by the divine providence of god his eyes beheld the newborn king this is what simeon said when he took jesus in his arms lord now you're letting your servant depart in peace according to your word from my eyes have seen your salvation which you have prepared before the face of all peoples a light to bring revelation to the gentiles in the glory of your people israel according to the word of the lord jesus came to be the consolation of israel a light to the gentiles and the glory of his people he is your consolation your light in your glory through comfort compassion relief and strength jesus casts all anxiety away and replaces it with perfect peace there is no need to be anxious anymore every need you have is covered in jesus [Music] he comforts you he offers compassion and relief from every worry he strengthens you and leads you into the assurance that he has everything under control release everything to him when anxiety was great within me your consolation brought me joy rest in the joy of the lord feel his peace wash over you like a healing balm in him you have received healing and renewal the old things are gone and the new has come all anxieties are taken away and replaced by god's consolation of peace in psalm 119 we hear these words remember your promise to me it is my only hope your promise revives me it comforts me in all my troubles remember god's promises they are your hope they comfort you in every trouble he promises to uphold you with his righteous right hand he promises to love you with an everlasting love he promises to be with you always never leaving you or forsaking you rest deeply in the promises of god tonight doubt cannot remain where god's truth abides fear is cast out where god's peace resides anxiety runs dry as god's presence fills worries are calmed as the holy spirit stills gracious god please remember this beloved listener tonight as they sleep soundly in your presence and in your grace bless them as they rest in you [Music] keep them in judea in the days of christ it's a day far removed from our cluttered lives there are no cell phones no computers no video games no cars it's just you and god and his creation oh and a few hundred other followers of jesus you're one of those followers but it doesn't seem crowded everyone around you is patient and happy and full of cheer it's as if they've waited all their lives for this moment it's as if their people have waited centuries for this time in history no one's in a rush no one is pushy they're savoring every second a mother and her young son are in front of you laughing the boy he appears to be about five turns around and gives you an innocent wave you smile back near them is a short gray-haired elderly woman she asks the question everyone else is thinking is he the messiah no one answers but you've heard enough stories about jesus healing the sick and giving sight to the blind that you've already formed your opinion he claims to be god's son and you believe it at the head of the crowd is jesus himself surrounded by peter james and john and the other disciples he's led his followers to an area near the sea of galilee it's a beautiful day and you're enjoying the walk it's warm and mostly sunny with only a few white wispy clouds high overhead they're moving ever so slowly across the sky as if they too are hanging around and watching jesus wanting a glimpse of the messiah the warm sunshine massages your skin and a cool breeze off the sea of galilee ensures you don't get too hot the breeze carries within a dozen earthy aromas water and dirt and freshwater fish and even the unmistakable scent of wildflowers from the nearby shore to your right you spot two fishermen in a small sailboat pulling their net up from the sea of galilee they've caught perhaps a dozen fish today and you watch as they carefully pluck each one from the webbing suddenly one of the fishermen looks in your general direction and motions to his friend who looks your way too you quickly realize that they're not looking at you but at jesus both men rushed to the back of the boat and grabbed their paddles they hurriedly placed them just under the surface of the water and begin rowing to shore they're wanting to see jesus and if they hurry they will up ahead on your path you spot a squirrel searching for food within the rocks it's cleaning its face oblivious to the crowd around it you hear a joyful child's voice commenting on the squirrel's bushy tail and furry ears all of a sudden the squirrel dashes away from you and toward the front of the crowd perhaps it's chasing an insect or maybe it's just like those fishermen and it wants to see jesus too a few minutes have passed and jesus has led everyone to a hill overlooking the sea of galilee it's filled with large and small boulders alike with green grass growing everywhere else please gather around he tells the crowd he's sitting halfway up the hill on a large flat rock underneath a tall juniper tree the hill is spacious enough to give everyone plenty of room just as important it's quiet enough so that anyone in the crowd can hear you find a small boulder to sit on to listen to he's about seven long steps directly in front of you although the twelve disciples are the closest to jesus peter is sitting on a rock to your right he's laughing and talking to andrew his brother jesus is patient as everyone continues to find a place to sit an older woman sits down to your left in an empty spot of green grass she appears to be in her 60s and she begins chatting her husband she tells you is a farmer things have been tight lately during the drought her brow is filled with wrinkles she looks anxious it hasn't rained in days she says i'm worried she asks you if you think jesus is the messiah you smile at her and give an approving nod a hush quickly falls over the crowd jesus is speaking blessed are the poor in spirit he says for theirs is the kingdom of heaven blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be satisfied blessed are the merciful for they shall receive mercy blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see god blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of god blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account rejoice and be glad for your reward is great in heaven for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you you are the salt of the earth but if salt has lost its taste how shall its saltiness be restored it is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet you are the light of the world a city set on a hill cannot be hidden nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a stand and it gives light to all in the house in the same way let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your father who is in heaven jesus has been speaking for about 15 minutes you're struck by his calm demeanor his knowledge of scripture his love for the people above all you're struck by his wisdom he's unlike any rabbi you've seen his words seem as if they're straight from god himself your mind begins drifting as you think about jesus role in your life a thousand questions swirl in your head if jesus is the messiah then what does that mean for your future what does it mean for your people is he the answer to every problem in your life is he god suddenly jesus looks straight at you and smiles he continues preaching but you think to yourself was he reading my mind did he know what i was thinking whatever the case you continue listening no one can serve two masters jesus says for you will hate one and love the other you will be devoted to one and despise the other you cannot serve both god and money that is why i tell you not to worry about everyday life whether you have enough food and drink or enough clothes to wear isn't life more than food and your body more than clothing look at the birds he says pointing to a few sparrows on the tree limbs above him you don't plant or harvest or store food in barns for your heavenly father feeds them and aren't you far more valuable to him than they are can all your worries add a single moment to your life and why worry about your clothing jesus says pointing to the valley below they don't work or make their clothing yet solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are and if god cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow he will certainly care for you why do you have so little faith so don't worry about these things saying what will we eat what will we drink what will we wear these things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers but your heavenly father already knows all your needs seek the kingdom of god above all else and live righteously and he will give you everything you need so don't worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will bring its own worries today's trouble is enough for today an hour has passed jesus has finished preaching he and his disciples are huddled together further up the hill about 20 paces from you straight ahead some of jesus followers have walked back to their villages others though are still gathered on the hillside in groups of two or three discussing this sermon on the mountain the elderly woman who sat to your left is one of those who has hung around she's smiling now her demeanor has radically changed she's no longer worrying she approaches you with tears of joy and shouts the lord will provide the lord will take care of us she points to the western horizon a storm is building a cool wind is blowing your direction much needed rain is on the way you look up at jesus and his followers who are also looking at the growing storm he briefly glances down at you and smiles tears of joy stream down your face as you recall jesus words look at the birds they don't plant or harvest or store food in barns for your heavenly father feeds them and aren't you far more valuable to him than they are can all your worries add a single moment to your life and why worry about your clothing look at the lilies of the field and how they grow they don't work or make their clothing yet solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are and if god cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow he will certainly care for you seek the kingdom of god above all else and live righteously and he will give you everything you need as we transition back to the present day let's meditate on life-changing moment in time as a suffering woman takes a bold step of faith and reaches for the only one who can heal her but before we get into the scriptures please get settled into bed and take a people wait for jesus he steps out of the boat and is welcomed by them they gather around him pressing in on every side desperate to get close to him a woman is in the crowd a dear woman who has been bleeding for 12 long years can you imagine she has suffered for so long without relief she has spent her life savings on doctors and treatments hoping something will work she has been isolated and outcast as a woman who is unclean by every standard of the jewish law she should not be there this day however she has nowhere else to go she is desperate to find healing and she knows there is one who can make her whole perhaps you have felt unclean or isolated maybe you don't believe you should receive anything from god if so please release those thoughts to the savior tonight he has washed away your guilt and shame he has torn the veil so that you can enter the holy of holies he invites you to come boldly to the throne of grace gracious god please release this beloved listener of all doubt tonight as they come before you remove any obstacle that stands in their way restore their faith in you leading them to your throne fully surrendered to you in the name of jesus i pray even though the woman was deemed unclean by the jewish law the law of love prevailed that day her faith in jesus took her to galilee despite the label others had placed on her and in faith she waited for just the right time to touch the hem of his robe her story is recorded in luke chapter 8 verses 43 and 44. now a woman having a flow of blood for 12 years who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any came from behind and touched the border of his garment and immediately her flow of blood stopped immediately she was healed with one slight touch she received the power of jesus mighty to heal you see as jesus the great physician walked past she knew without a doubt that he was able to heal he is able as efficient 320 says he is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine according to his power that is at work within us rest in that comforting truth tonight gracious god healer and friend we come humbly before you thanking you for being with us as this beloved person seeks you tonight help them to find your grace and peace remind them that they are created to seek you reach for you and find you for you are not far from them i pray for this dear person to be assured of the healing power of your presence i ask lord that you heal every affliction every illness and every issue they might have in the mighty name of jesus and by the asked who touched me none of his disciples could answer him in fact they questioned the lord by saying master the multitudes strong and press you and you say who touched me but jesus said somebody saul but saul had betrayed him and sought to kill him by this david knew that king saul was not just going against him but against god saul and david both knew that god had chosen david to succeed saul yet saul refused to accept that to combat his fears david liked to write songs at one time he had written songs the comfort king saw yet now he wrote them to comfort himself writing down what was true about god helped him remember who god was which put his own fears in their place david pulled the slab of damp clay in front of him and then picked up the stiff reed to use as his writing tool he stuck the reed in his mouth for a moment as he thought as was often the case the words began to flow freely the lord is my light and my salvation whom shall i fear the lord is the stronghold of my life of whom shall i be afraid what comfort these words brought him as he sat in a dark cave he reflected on how the lord was his light the lord was the one who would ultimately rescue him david knew better than to trust in his own puny power and as he spent his life on the run it brought him great joy to remember that the lord is his stronghold and that was much more secure than the most powerful fortress your own fears become greatly diminished since god is your light salvation and stronghold david looked out of the cave's mouth and could picture saul and his mighty army coming after him he took a deep breath and wrote when the wicked advance against me to devour me it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall though an army besiege me my heart will not fear the war break out against me even then i will be confident picture the lord standing at your side with his mighty heavenly army coming against your fear let that image give you confidence david bowed his head to pray and ponder what did he want from the lord as he thought about it he knew with certainty one thing i ask from the lord this only do i seek that i may dwell in the house of the lord all the days of my life to gaze on the beauty of the lord and to seek him in his temple more than anything david wanted to dwell in the house of the lord which meant that he wanted to be in his presence david knew that god was with him even in this dark cave but he longed to worship him publicly before all of israel his shoulders slumped as he thought about how he was barred from the places he'd come to love but then another thought came to him as he looked out over the fields of israel even on the run he was able to see god's handiwork yet he knew that the lord was even more beautiful than his creation [Music] he found great comfort in that the beauty of the lord is overwhelming and awe-inspiring with these thoughts david sat up straighter and wrote for in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me at his sacred tent i will sacrifice with shouts of joy i will sing and make music to the lord the high ground was the best place for battle and every warrior wanted possession of it the lord kept him safe sheltered him and set him upon the high rock even if he wasn't on the literal high ground he was certainly on the spiritual high ground god has set you on the high ground spiritually and you can make music in your heart to him david stood up and walked outside the cave he suddenly felt overwhelmed with all he'd been through he lifted his arms and said aloud hear my voice when i call lord be merciful to me and answer me my heart says of you seek his face your face lord i will seek that's what he was doing seeking the lord's face he had bowed his head but now he lifted it up do not hide your face from me do not turn your servant away in anger you have been my helper do not reject me or forsake me god my savior david had cried out to god in anguish his emotions getting the best of him but now he put his arms down and put one foot but now he put his arms down and put one foot down firmly to help his body and heart follow his mind though my father and mother forsake me the lord will receive me this is what he knew to be true even those who loved him most would at times fail him but the lord would never turn him away [Music] david went back inside the cave he sank down onto the hard floor and thought about saul saul too had at one time worshipped god but now he had turned his back on him david never wanted to be guilty of that he knew how easy it would be to lose heart and confidence in god because of his circumstances so he whispered under his breath teach me your way lord lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors do not turn me over to the desire of my foes for false witnesses rise up against me spouting malicious accusations it helped david to recognize that what others said about him were lies it comforted him to know that god knew the truth yes god knew and was watching over him every moment he would never abandon him for even a second david picked up the reed and wrote boldly i remain confident of this i will see the goodness of the lord in the land of the living he would keep this tablet and read those words often he committed them to memory so that when difficult things happened he would remember the truth that god is good and wants nothing but good for him david didn't know how long it would take for god to vindicate him and put him on the throne he didn't know how long it would take for saul to quit pursuing him but he did know one thing that he would tell himself and those who followed him wait for the lord be strong and take heart and wait for the lord as you drift to sleep let the silence of the night renew and refresh you god is in the silence and wants to whisper encouragement and assurance to your soul he wants you to know his great love for you and fill you with strength even as you sleep as you rest i will pray psalm 27 for you the lord is your light and salvation whom shall you fear the lord is the stronghold of their life of whom shall they be afraid when the wicked advance against them and they feel like they are going to devour them been their helper your faithfulness in the past helps them trust you now you will not reject or forsake them god our savior even those who love them will fail them but you will never fail them lord teach them your way lead them in a straight path because of their oppressors if others tell lies against them you will remind them of the truth may they remain confident of this they will see your goodness in the land of the living you almost never do things on their schedule you always do things perfectly at the perfect time because you know everything help them to remember this lord help them surrendering yourself into the loving and forgiving arms of jesus releasing the weight of your worldly cares as you focus on the likeness of the gospel the good news of the death burial and this gift tonight i pray keep them in that perfect peace which you have promised to them whose mind is fixed on you and give them such a sense of your presence that in these moments of silence they dear peaceful and restful father give this child tonight your faith give this child tonight your peace no wind in their face no mist from waves no water at their feet let them hear your peaceful voice let them hear your loving voice your powerful protecting voice voice that calms storms a voice that brings peace a voice that brings rest sleep pace your breathing as you listen to the word of god just a figment of your imagination but you know that it is real and you know that it is your true home your eternal country the place your heart longs for above all else sometimes the egg to be there is so strong but rest rest knowing that it is your future eternal home we all have experienced pain in this world we all have shed tears but there will come a time when there will be no more pain and no more tears listen to these verses from the book of revelation and i heard a loud voice from the throne saying behold the dwelling place of god is with man he will dwell with them and they will be his people and god himself will be with them as their god he will wipe away every tear from their eyes and death shall be no more neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore for the former things have passed away let's take a journey to this place of peace imagine you have just passed over a river and landed on the banks of heaven you feel no anxiety no worry no fear though everything is new to you yes all has been made new even you you look down at your body you hold out your hands and gaze at them turning them over and back that scar from when you cut yourself when you were nine and learning to use a pocket knife is no longer there your knees don't ache your lungs fill deeply your eyes are clear you're not sure but it looks like you might be glowing wonder stirs in your heart as you look up and see huge gates encrusted with beautiful priceless gems you hurry toward them as your heart seems ready to burst with joy you stop and wonder as you enter the gates your eyes trying to take in everything at once it's true it's so very true streets of gold and welcome a sense that you are finally where you belong the smile on your face is just huge as you take it all in you can't wait any longer so you enter the city the new jerusalem the promise you've read about all your life and you see them your friends and family who have gone before you they're all there and all the saints of old that you've heard so much about the martyrs those who have had their lives snatched from them by evil because they proclaimed the name of jesus and right there jesus you know it's him he's in the center of all of it and he is looking directly at you a look of such happiness on his face that you are there and this time your heart does burst with joy the sight of your savior overwhelms you and you fall to your face on that glittering golden road nothing else matters now he is with you he is before you he is all around you your wildest imagination when you were on earth did not prepare you for the reality of seeing him in this heavenly place face to face he comes to you and lifts you up and says those words you've longed to hear welcome my child to your heavenly home you don't take your eyes off of him but you can still see that everyone around you is suffused with light and joy just from being in his presence you know that some of them have suffered such pain and sorrow in their earthly lives but here that pain is forgotten you remember what you've read he will wipe away every tear from their eyes and death shall be no more neither shall there be mourning or crying nor pain anymore for the former things have passed away and it's true no one is crying no one looks at anyone else in judgment of them you hear so many different voices all speaking in different tongues and yet you understand them all how can this be everyone together in perfect unity then you remember the rest of that verse behold the dwelling place of god is with man he will dwell with them and they will be his people and god himself will be with them as their god it's because god is their god just as he is your god you see clearly oh so clearly now god has gathered his people to himself and as you look around at all the precious faces before you you understand it was never about you it was always about jesus the people who suffered torture and death because of their faith it wasn't about them it was about jesus they joined in his suffering and now they are with him forever his people with no more pain and no more tears the awesomeness of being in his presence is both overwhelming and satisfying like you'll never need anything ever again and that's the truth of it isn't it you followed jesus faithfully if not perfectly and now you have your reward and it is jesus he's all you've ever needed and you know when you see him face to face that you will never feel sorrow or pain again that's all passed away everything has been made new as you continue gazing at this scene imagine you're breathing that celestial air inhale the presence of the lord exhale worry anxiety and fear feel your feet on those streets of gold see the faces of those who have gone before you cheering you on knowing that there is a place prepared just for you [Music] glorious lord jesus i can't wait to see you face to face you are holy and where you are is where i want to be thank you that you have prepared a place for me and that you are waiting for me at those heavenly gates there is so much pain and misery here on earth and i long to be where there are no more tears and no more pain but i know that as long as you have me here on earth that you want me to be telling others about you give me courage to talk to others keep my eyes fixed on you and my heart always turned toward home [Music] my true home amen tonight's sleep story is from daniel chapter 2 verse 1. king nebuchadnezzar the ancient king of babylon was having dreams that troubled him they were so troubling he could not sleep our time tonight is designed to promote more peaceful and comforting dreams like nebuchadnezzar if you have been troubled with nightmares or night terrors in the past this sleep meditation will help you rest in the comfort of the lord perhaps worries anxieties and troubled dreams are keeping you awake you may find yourself tossing and turning night after night your spirit is troubled and sleep has escaped you take a few quiet moments take a few quiet moments to release all of your worries anxieties and troubles to the lord ahead release them now your heavenly father is waiting to take them from you tonight before we begin our story from daniel chapter 2 i encourage you to get comfortable relax every muscle in your body starting with your shoulders and moving all the way down name of jesus i forbid satan from coming against me in my sleep with that let's begin tonight's story one night during the second year of his reign nebuchadnezzar had such disturbing dreams that he couldn't sleep he called in his magicians enchanters sorcerers and astrologers and he demanded that they tell him what he had dreamed as they stood before the king he said i have had a dream that deeply troubles me and i must know what it means then the astrologers answered the king in aramaic long live the king tell us the dream and we will tell you what it means but the king said to the astrologers i am serious about this if you don't tell me what my dream was and what it means you will be torn limb from limb and your houses will be turned into heaps of rubble but if you tell me what i dreamed and what the dream means i will give you many wonderful gifts and honors just tell me the dream and what it means they said again please your majesty tell us the dream and we will tell you what it means the king replied i know what you are doing you're stalling for time because you know i am serious when i say if you don't tell me the dream you are doomed so you have conspired to tell me lies hoping i will change my mind but tell me the dream and then i'll know that you can tell me what it means the astrologers replied to the king no one on earth can tell the king his dream and no king however great and powerful has ever asked such a thing of any magician enchanter or astrologer the king's demand is impossible no one except the gods can tell you your dream and they do not live here among people the king was furious when he heard this and he ordered that all the wise men of babylon be executed and because of the king's decree men were sent to find and kill daniel and his friends when arioch the commander of the king's guard came to kill them daniel handled the situation with wisdom and discretion he asked aryak why has the king issued such a harsh decree so arioch told him all that had happened daniel went at once to see the king and requested more time to tell the king what the dream meant then daniel went home and told his friends hanania mishael and azria what had happened he urged them to ask the god of heaven to show them his mercy by telling them the secret so they would not be executed along with the other wise men of babylon that night the secret was revealed to daniel in a vision then daniel praised the god of heaven he said praise the name of god forever and ever for he has all wisdom and power he controls the course of world events he removes kings and sets up other kings he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars he reveals deep and mysterious things and knows what lies hidden i thank and praise you god of my ancestors for you have given me wisdom and strength you have told me what we asked of you and revealed to us what the king demanded king nebuchadnezzar was not a king devoted to the lord in fact ezra chapter 5 verse 12 recalls how nebuchadnezzar rose up against the lord and his people instead of humbling himself before god he exalted himself allow god to create a peaceful space in your mind god your creator loves you deeply turn your heart to the god of peace the god who is able to bring you relaxing sleep he is your comforter and friend part of nebuchadnezzar's distress was that he didn't understand the meaning of his dreams he was anxious for someone to help him figure them out however he didn't ask for the lord's wisdom or revelation his first course of action was to seek worldly advice counsel from people who were not walking with god when it comes to your worries and troubled thoughts you can go to the lord for answers you can seek his wisdom you can ask him for divine revelation rest in god's wisdom i invite you into this peaceful space with god as you continue to breathe softly in and out rest securely in the presence of the lord know that the holy spirit covers you with his love joy and peace remain in his presence as i pray over you heavenly father i pray for your covering over this beloved person tonight by your holy spirit i ask that you shelter them in the palm of your hand lord i know that you care deeply for them you love them you created them you long for them to have peace the peace that comes from knowing you please help this beloved child release all of their burdens to you now one by one loosen their fingers and help them release their tight grasp on the worries of this life assure them of your great love and provision as they place their trust in you you lord thank you for covering them in your presence tonight in jesus's holy name amen in daniel chapter 2 verse 3 king nebuchadnezzar said i have had a dream and my spirit is anxious to know what it means his spirit was anxious his anxiousness prevented him from sleeping let there be no hint of anxiousness in your spirit tonight allow yourself to be delivered from it by the mighty hand of god he knows all about your life he cares for you his spirit overcomes every hint of anxiousness that resides in your spirit release your anxiety now there is a deep sense of beauty as you enjoy the embrace of your father in heaven you feel peace and contentment like never before allow your breath to feel the serenity of his peace there's an old hymn that has the sweet refrain whom shall we trust but thee o lord where rest but on thy faithful word none ever called on thee in vain give peace o god give peace again there is no one else who is more trustworthy than jesus christ our lord let the word trust settle deep in your heart tonight as you breathe softly in and out there is no other place where you can rest more deeply than on god's faithful word his promises are true his covenant is everlasting rest deeply on his faithful word tonight no one ever calls on god in vain for when we call on him he hears us he never grows weary of our prayers our petitions are like sweet incense rising before his throne he hears us when we pray allow your silent prayers to rise like incense before god give peace o god give peace again yes lord give us your peace tonight give us peace in place of our troubling thoughts rest in the assurance of god's peace for a few moments finally after turning to the wrong advice and getting nowhere king nebuchadnezzar sought wise counsel from daniel daniel was god's beloved servant set apart in holiness and righteousness daniel was committed to seeking god first in everything chapter 2 verse 20 of daniel says blessed be the name of god forever and ever for wisdom and might are his wisdom and might are his wisdom and might are his let those words sink deep in your heart tonight inhale and exhale breathe in god's wisdom and the strength of his might daniel also said this about the lord god reveals deep and secret things he knows what is in the darkness and light dwells with him god reveals deep and secret things nothing is hidden from him he sees it all nothing is too difficult for him he knows the answers he has a plan for you you can trust in him trust in him tonight the lord knows what resides in the darkness you don't need to be afraid for light dwells with him he will expose every hidden thing in him is light true light that is pure and holy remain in the light of god's holiness for several moments please let me pray over you father god i come before you on behalf of this beloved person tonight i ask that every troubled thought be wiped away by the comforting presence of your spirit lord i pray that this child of yours would not be fearful about anything i ask that they rest in your light the true light that overcomes all darkness in the name of your son jesus i pray just as the lord gave daniel wisdom concerning king nebuchadnezzar's troubling dreams he gives us wisdom when we ask but when we ask we must believe and not doubt in your heart believe and do not doubt settle your mind on the word believe for a few moments god shines his light in dark places he reveals troubling thoughts and replaces them with peaceful thoughts he exposes secret things so that he can bring thank you and praise you o god of my fathers you have given me wisdom and might and have now made known to me what we asked of you for you have made known to us the king's demand daniel's first response was thanksgiving and praise let your spirit respond with thanksgiving and praise for several moments god inhabits the praise of his people our worship is a beautiful sound to his ears hear the hushed sound of your spirit worshiping god's spirit as you rest in him tonight when sleep eludes us we can ask god to reveal what is troubling our dreams he is the great revealer he is the great restorer he is our beautiful redeemer feel the presence of your redeemer with you tonight allow god to settle your heart and mind in christ jesus let go of everything release it all you can trust god to give you deep and peaceful sleep you are covered by his spirit he watches over you every single moment he can fill your dreams with good things he can bless your sleep so that you awaken renewed waters hanging on for dear life we find ourselves off course in need of a safe harbor that may be where you are tonight in need of rest and a word from the lord in your dreams and psalm 107 assures us tonight our destiny will be a place that is safe from the harms of the world like a protected cove you can feel totally comfortable peaceful and anchored in god's protection our scripture involves israel's restoration from exile in babylon just like you may need tonight they were in need of safe harbor every ship has treasure of some kind and you are no different you are precious cargo as you prepare for sleep know that you are anchored in the waters of freedom and have a carte blanche invitation to explore the depths of god with great liberty and no you are welcome here before our voyage begins place yourself in the comfort of your bed or a place where you can sleep relax each part of your body close your eyes for the next few moments focus only on your breath if your mind wanders on the events of your day and it probably will gently pull it back in feel your breath going in and out notice the way your arms are resting on the bed your feet feel the coolness of the soft sheets allow god to nurture you so you can get the rest your mind and body need before setting sail any good captain needs to have all the necessary tools otherwise his ship could sail right into unfriendly waters and never reach the harbor the christian sailor uses scripture and prayer as a nautical guide with that let's turn to prayer if you are anxious still your heart we pause to remember that we are invited into the presence of god and to commune with him it's the same god who created the universe and hung the stars who guided the sailors of old come home to the deep presence of the lord father i come before you now help me to continue my journey and trust knowing that you will never fail me and that your divine purpose in my life cannot be stopped by the enemy of this world i pray that you will give me a very real sense of your presence and all that is going on in my life and what i am going through equip my body my vessel for the days and weeks ahead i pray that you will fill my sails with your peace and will open my eyes to know that you are with me despite the fierce storm that is all around me help me to look to you and only you for strength and shelter lord help me to know that my hope and my safe harbor are found in you and your protection as i prepare for sleep please relax my body send me thoughts that will quiet and calm my mind and reassure my spirit that you and your angels are watching and singing over me please send your angels into my dreams with messages that will help me become healthier give me the faith oh lord give me the faith i need to trust that you possibility that the lord may have something specifically to say to you as you sleep in psalm 107 we find a group who gets caught in a storm while on a business trip at sea imagine you are part of this group of fishermen psalm 107 23-32 describes the scene some went down to the sea and ships doing business on the great waters they saw the deeds of the lord his wondrous works in the deep for he commanded and raised the stormy wind which lifted up the waves of the sea they mounted up to heaven they went down to the depths their courage melted away in their evil plight they reeled and staggered like drunkards and were at their wit's end as you look around you see boats headed in different directions some are headed out to sea while the others are headed for port others seem to be merely drifting going one way and then another oblivious to the changing conditions stormy clouds begin to roll in blocking the bright sun it silently looms over your crew in anticipation you scramble across the teetering deck to your assigned position shadows swallow the last rays of light and thunder crackles through the air rain begins to pour furiously drowning any sight of certainty monstrous waves of contrasting shades slam your boat the waves break around the rocks in the shallows foamy crests becoming chaotic lace over the blue mesmerized by the swirling tides the movement of the water choreographs your thoughts as you call upon the lord our passage continues then they cry out to the lord in their trouble and he delivered them from their distress he made the storm be still and the waves of the sea were hushed as things around you calm down you notice that some of the other ships reflect the wear and tear from weathering the storm others though are not damaged they are taking pleasure cruises or are bound for their own predetermined destinations you are thankful you've crossed the rough waters the waves have subsided yet the air is damp and foggy through the fog a glimmer of light shines dimly the golden beam slowly rotates it's a lighthouse navigating weary captains and their crew to a safe harbor this beacon of hope has stood strong and weathered the storm the psalmist writes then they were glad that the waters were quiet and he brought them to their desired haven let them thank the lord for his steadfast love for his wondrous works to the children of man let them extol him in the congregation of the people and praise him in the assembly of the elders they rejoiced when the waves grew quiet then he guided them to the harbor they longed for let them give thanks to the lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the counsel of the elders as you drift further into a deep sleep allow the gratitude in your heart that god has delivered you to safety flow out to him while your cargo has bounced around you are a little rattled but you've survived the worst of it you are in one piece you slowly steer your boat deeper into the harbor where you can see more clearly nestled in a small inlet as a mooring perfect for your long-anticipated respite you know that if boats are not secured they can drift away if a storm occurs at night so you make sure your tie lines are tight now that you and your fellow fishermen are securely anchored may restful sleep come your way you feel a gentle rock of your vessel from side to side tiny waves gently move along the outside of your boat your soul finds comfort god's hand protects you he has delivered you through the storm i invite you now to say in your spirit that you are open to hear the truth of god's word a word that might be a word from him in your inmost being through your sleeping hours he stilled the storm to a murmur and the waves of the sea were hushed they rejoiced when the waves grew quiet then he guided them to the harbor they longed for let them give thanks to the lord for his faithful love and his wonderful works for all humanity let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the counsel of the elders while on the depths of the sea they saw the deeds of the lord the sailors observed firsthand the power and fury of nature he describes a powerful storm the ship of your heart is filled with treasure filled with thoughts of god which are more valuable than the greatest pearl the finest cut diamond or any other priceless treasure man could possibly find or conceive of so as you traverse the seas of life and in times of trouble and turmoil do not focus on the evil at hand or possible evil to come as matthew and luke remind rest and be anchored in the rock of my heart an anchor which cannot slip focus on me and you will stay afloat god is your safe harbor of consistent hope and endless love invite him into the deepest parts of you and he will anchor you to a place where all things work together for good crawl up into the ship of his heart and let him show you how he sees things in this troubled day jesus thank you for being our safe harbor as you drift further and further to sleep rest in his loving arms when the storms rage and the winds blow when the waves are high when our very hearts are shaken strength and courage seem to melt away remember the one and only the one whom the wind and waves obey the lord most high who can calm any storm support you you are not left to figure out things for yourself he is there to uphold you to help you get back on your feet and then to lead you in the way you should go you can trust him lean on him beautiful passage of scripture that tells of a man named simeon who was led by the spirit to the temple on the same day that mary and joseph brought the baby jesus to be dedicated you see simeon had long awaited the birth of the messiah the consolation of israel and by the divine providence of god his eyes beheld the newborn king this is what simeon said when he took jesus in his arms lord now you're letting your servant depart in peace according to your word from my eyes have seen your salvation which you have prepared before the face of all peoples a light to bring revelation to the gentiles in the glory of your people israel according to the word of the lord jesus came to be the consolation of israel a light to the gentiles and the glory of his people he is your consolation your light and your glory through comfort compassion relief and strength jesus casts all anxiety away and replaces it with perfect peace there is no need to be anxious anymore every need you have is covered in jesus he comforts you he offers compassion and relief from every worry he strengthens you and leads you into the assurance that he has everything under control release everything to him when anxiety was great within me your consolation brought me joy rest in the joy of the lord feel his peace wash over you like a healing balm in him you have received healing and renewal the old things are gone and the new has come all anxieties are taken away and replaced by god's consolation of peace in psalm 119 we hear these words remember your promise to me it is my only hope your promise revives me it comforts me in all my troubles remember god's promises they are your hope they comfort you in every trouble he promises to uphold you with his righteous right hand he promises to love you with an everlasting love he promises to be with you always never leaving you or forsaking you rest deeply in the promises of god tonight doubt cannot remain where god's truth abides fear is cast out where god's peace resides anxiety runs dry as god's presence fills worries are calmed as the holy spirit stills gracious god please remember this beloved listener tonight as they sleep soundly in your presence and in your grace bless them as they rest in you keep them in the fold of your unfailing love and guard them through every hour of the night thank you lord for freeing this keep your eyes closed imagine walking through the countryside of judea in the days of christ it's a day far removed from our cluttered lives there are no cell phones no computers no video games no cars it's just you and god and his creation oh and a few hundred other followers of jesus you're one of those followers but it doesn't seem crowded everyone around you is patient and happy and full of cheer it's as if they've waited all their lives for this moment it's as if their people have waited centuries for this time in history no one's in a rush no one is pushy they're savoring every second a mother and her young son are in front of you laughing the boy he appears to be about five turns around and gives you an innocent wave you smile back near them is a short gray-haired elderly woman she asks the question everyone else is thinking is he the messiah no one answers but you've heard enough stories about jesus healing the sick and giving sight to the blind that you've already formed your opinion he claims to be god's son and you believe it at the head of the crowd is jesus himself surrounded by peter james and john and the other disciples he's led his followers to an area near the sea of galilee it's a beautiful day and you're enjoying the walk it's warm and mostly sunny with only a few white wispy clouds high overhead they're moving ever so slowly across the sky as if they too are hanging around and watching jesus wanting a glimpse of the messiah the warm sunshine massages your skin and a cool breeze off the sea of galilee ensures you don't get too hot the breeze carries within a dozen earthy aromas water and dirt and freshwater fish and even the unmistakable scent of wildflowers from the nearby shore to your right you spot two fishermen in a small sailboat pulling their net up from the sea of galilee they've caught perhaps a dozen fish today and you watch as they carefully pluck each one from the webbing suddenly one of the fishermen looks in your general direction and motions to his friend who looks your way too you quickly realize that they're not looking at you but at jesus both men rush to the back of the boat and grab their paddles they hurriedly place them just under the surface of the water and begin rowing to shore they're wanting to see jesus and if they hurry they will up ahead on your path you spot a squirrel searching for food within the rocks it's cleaning its face oblivious to the crowd around it you hear a joyful child's voice commenting on the squirrel's bushy tail and furry ears all of a sudden the squirrel dashes away from you and toward the front of the crowd perhaps it's chasing an insect or maybe it's just like those fishermen and it wants to see jesus too a few minutes have passed and jesus has led everyone to a hill overlooking the sea of galilee it's filled with large and small boulders alike with green grass growing everywhere else please gather around he tells the crowd he's sitting halfway up the hill on a large flat rock underneath a tall juniper tree the hill is spacious enough to give everyone plenty of room just as important it's quiet enough so that anyone in the crowd can hear you find a small boulder to sit on to listen to jesus he's about seven long steps directly in front of you although the twelve disciples are the closest to jesus peter is sitting on a rock to your right he's laughing and talking to andrew his brother jesus is patient as everyone continues to find a place to sit an older woman sits down to your left in an empty spot of green grass she appears to be in her 60s and she begins chatting her husband she tells you is a farmer things have been tight lately during the drought her brow is filled with wrinkles she looks anxious it hasn't rained in days she says i'm worried she asks you if you think jesus is the messiah you smile at her and give an approving nod a hush quickly falls over the crowd jesus is speaking blessed are the poor in spirit he says for theirs is the kingdom of heaven blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be satisfied blessed are the merciful for they shall receive mercy blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see god blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of god blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account rejoice and be glad for your reward is great in heaven for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you you are the salt of the earth but if salt has lost its taste how shall its saltiness be restored it is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet you are the light of the world a city set on a hill cannot be hidden nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a stand and it gives light to all in the house in the same way let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your father who is in heaven jesus has been speaking for about 15 minutes you're struck by his calm demeanor his knowledge of scripture his love for the people above all you're struck by his wisdom he's unlike any rabbi you've seen his words seem as if they're straight from god himself your mind begins drifting as you think about jesus role in your life a thousand questions swirl in your head if jesus is the messiah then what does that mean for your future what does it mean for your people is he the answer to every problem in your life is he god suddenly jesus looks straight at you and smiles he continues preaching but you think to yourself was he reading my mind did he know what i was thinking whatever the case you continue listening no one can serve two masters jesus says for you will hate one and love the other you will be devoted to one and despise the other you cannot serve both god and money that is why i tell you not to worry about everyday life whether you have enough food and drink or enough clothes to wear isn't life more than food and your body more than clothing look at the birds he says pointing to a few sparrows on the tree limbs above him you don't plant or harvest or store food in barns for your heavenly father feeds them and aren't you far more valuable to him than they are can all your worries add a single moment to your life and why worry about your clothing jesus says pointing to the valley below they don't work or make their clothing yet solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are and if god cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow he will certainly care for you why do you have so little faith so don't worry about these things saying what will we eat what will we drink what will we wear these things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers but your heavenly father already knows all your needs seek the kingdom of god above all else and live righteously and he will give you everything you need so don't worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will bring its own worries today's trouble is enough for today an hour has passed jesus has finished preaching he and his disciples are huddled together further up the hill about 20 paces from you straight ahead some of jesus followers have walked back to their villages others though are still gathered on the hillside in groups of two or three discussing this sermon on the mountain the elderly woman who sat to your left is one of those who has hung around she's smiling now her demeanor has radically changed she's no longer worrying she approaches you with tears of joy and shouts the lord will provide the lord will take care of us she points to the western horizon a storm is building a cool wind is blowing your direction much needed rain is on the way you look up at jesus and his followers who are also looking at the growing storm he briefly glances down at you and smiles tears of joy stream down your face as you recall jesus words look at the birds they don't plant or harvest or store food in barns for your heavenly father feeds them and aren't you far more valuable to him than they are can all your worries add a single moment to your life and why worry about your clothing look at the lilies of the field and how they grow they don't work or make their clothing yet solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are and if god cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow he will certainly care for you seek the kingdom of god above all else and live righteously and he will give you everything you need as we transition back to the of the field and the colorful wildflowers they're all just a small part of your masterpiece they don't plant or harvest or store food and yet you take care of them they're never worried or anxious and yet you always provide for them your word tells us you already know our every need we praise you for who you are promise keeper and provider we love you seek the kingdom of god above all else and live righteously and he will give you everything you need so don't worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will bring its own worries today's trouble is enough for today father we lay our burdens before you and
