[Music] we can't be in chaos or we won't survive it and you look at Florida and and we really have a model uh to reverse the skids that the country's on now and get us on a much better pathway he says you're not going to be a dictator are you I said no no no other than day one I'm not wanted to read but I will hello everyone I'm major Garett in Washington welcome to America decides we will get to our show in just one moment but first we are following breaking news out of Las Vegas where police say at least three people were injured after a shooting this afternoon at the University of Nevada Las Vegas authorities say the suspect is dead President Biden has been briefed police in Las Vegas are calling this of course an active investigation but emphasized to the public there is no longer a threat the LIE dies slowly but it does die you know the LIE the one about the 2020 presidential election the lie that led otherwise sensible people to pretend they were something they were not specifically certified presidential electors the lie that led to the storming of the US capital and to date more than 1,200 arrests more than 700 guilty pleas and 170 convictions at trial that lie is dying wilting if you will under the pressure of slow persistent legal scrutiny guilty pleas have already been filed in Georgia today charges were filed against six Nevada Republicans supposed as fake electors also today a milestone in Wisconsin 10 Republicans admitted that Joe Biden won Wisconsin and the 2020 election that matters because these 10 Republicans filed phony paperwork to masquerade as the state certified electors the 10 fake Republicans signed a document that said in part quote we hereby withdraw the documents we executed on December 14th 2020 and request that they be disregarded by the public and all entities to which they were submitted the documents will be disregarded the actions will not be forgotten as part of this civil settlement these 10 Republicans promised not to serve as electors in the 2024 election or in any election where Trump is a candidate this is the first time fraudulent prot Trump electors have withdrawn their false paperwork and sworn not to do such a thing again the LIE colliding with stubborn facts so will all this come up at tonight's fourth Republican presidential debate where Trump again will be a no-show I mean after all the party's convention next summer will be in Milwaukee and Wisconsin Republicans just admitted in public they were dead wrong about the 2020 election to find out we will turn now to CBS News Chief election and campaign correspondent Robert Costa who joins us from Tuscaloosa Tuscaloosa Alabama with a preview Robert what can we expect tonight major it's great to be with you only wish you were here with me in Tuscaloosa this is a showdown in the Deep South for those Trump Rivals who are looking to gain Traction in this final lap of the Republican presidential race high stakes evening can they start to really make a contrast with former president Donald Trump the front runner in the race and will they tackle some of the trickier questions not just about politics but about American democracy especially after Trump made those comments in a town hall last night about how he could be a dictator at least on day one should he win another term and Robert it also strikes me that the Haley campaign is talking about momentum and the disantis campaign is talking about Gavin Nome in the case of Haley it's about better than better poll numbers and with Dan santis it's hey we went toe-to-toe with Gavin Nome and we came out on top that ought to matter do you expect either of those to be front and center tonight and do you think either one of those things are successful talking points for still on the fence Republicans Haley and desis both have a similar audience tonight yes they're speaking to Republican voters Nationwide but really they're talking to Major Republican donors those donors on Wall Street who are still figuring out where they're going to put their cash in this final dash of the Republican race will it be Haley or will it be the santis as the standard Bearer for that non-trump wing of the Republican Party they're competing for that support those dollars in this final stretch and Robert does it matter from your Vantage Point and based on your reporting that there are signs of if not disarray some manner of Discord within the disantis camp defections people have left the Haley campaign seems to be pretty unified does that matter and do you think that is something foreshadowing what may occur in Iowa New Hampshire South Carolina the first three important contests it matters to you major it matters to me we track the ins and outs of the presidential contest every day and we care about as reporters because it matters in terms of understanding the depth of campaign who's running the Super Pac and who's not running the Super PAC but for voters it comes down to the candidate and the message you know this as well as anyone and for governor Des Sanz tonight is about whether he can be seen as someone who's a credible alternative to Trump who's better positioned than Nikki Haley to be the voice for the non-trump wing in the Republican party and he has a real test his his super pack has seen a shuffling of Staff in recent weeks and does he reflect that kind of chaos behind the scenes with his Public Presentation or not if he's strong tonight if he's seen as credible and coherent to Republican voters and Republican donors all of that super pack noise won't really be an issue because the candidate will be front and center but if he seems unsteady and that is coupled with the unsteadiness that's widely perceived when it comes to his Super PAC that could lead to a perception problem for the disantis campaign and Robert let's talk about what is likely to be a theme during this evening's debate how establishment quote unquote Nikki Haley is or isn't is her campaign based on your interactions with them prepared for that does it have an argument to beat back the idea that she's sort of The Pick of a dying or weakened establishment Republican party I've spoken to Haley's allies at length about this issue about how her her opponents are going to try to cast her as a figure of the Republican establishment but she on the campaign aign Trail and on the debate stage often pushes back against that criticism by citing her own rise in politics think about how she became governor of South Carolina in 2010 she was part of that tea party wave reelected in 2014 ultimately joined the Trump Administration served until 2018 so she's trying to straddle that political line between being an outsider and an Insider and and Robert you referred to this at the top former president Trump in a town hall with Shan Hannity last night on Fox said he would be a dictator but only on day one is that in any way affecting the way people are thinking or talking about the debate do they categorize that based on your conversations there in Tuscaloosa as oh Trump just being slightly comic or reverent or do they fear that is something that is not only a warning but possibly politically injurious if he becomes the nominee some Republicans today like Senator Mitt Romney of Utah a trump critic have dismissed the comments As Trump essentially trying to appeal to the political base inside the Republican party at the same time many Democrats including the Biden White House they've said that these comments by Trump they represent an ominous threat to American democracy even raising the idea of being a sort of dictator with sweeping executive power on day one could be a problem for the American democratic system what I'm watching tonight as a reporter is how do Republican Rivals get into this if all do they say that's Trump being Trump or do they see this as an opportunity to cast themselves as someone who's different than Trump when it comes to American democracy look especially tonight for former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to take on these comments he is someone who has been far more independent minded when it comes to speaking about and criticizing Trump and one other thing I want to raise with you Robert if I can uh ask you to stay for just a couple more minutes V ramas Swami he has been in the shorthand of the review of the previous three debates the kind of wingman for the Trump aspect of the party complimentary to the former president but saying he's a new generation much the same thing and he has drawn the fire and the eye of Nikki Haley only four people on the stage tonight the two main combatants as we've described as santis and Haley what are you looking for when it comes to ramaswami tonight well I'd love to hear your take on this as well major is ramaswami is someone that let's not forget who at the last debate called on the Republican National committee chair Ron McDaniel to resign he is someone who's a provocator as well as a longtime entrepreneur uh he is really positioned himself as someone who's of the Trump movement uh but also running against Trump for the nomination so I'm looking for him to shake it up I mean this is someone who back at that first debate in the summer got a bit of a higher profile by taking some controversial stands in that first debate but he hasn't been able to build on that momentum in terms of polling traction since then and as he's moved to Iowa he's been in Iowa constantly and tried to put an emphasis on that State high stakes for him as well is he going to really stay in this race and and endure until late January early February or will he go the way of Governor Doug berum and former vice president Mike Pence and say in the winter season enough's enough there's just not the support there and this debate is maybe his last televised opportunity to really say I'm here not just echoing Trump but someone who a viable alternative to him even though I share many of his same positions Robert you used a crucial phrase just a second ago enough is enough lots of candidates have already reached that phase as you mentioned the former vice president Mike Pence Doug bergham sitting new North Dakota governor Tim Scott sitting senator from South Carolina they're already out they were on their debate stage earlier if ever so briefly and they're out is there a question like that that hangs over Chris Christie's campaign is enough and enough what is the path what is the point continuing on for Governor Christie I mean the dynamic tonight everyone's talking about is D santis and haly but I'm really watching Haley Christie because if DeSantis is coming out of Iowa maybe first maybe second against Trump that puts a real pressure point on Haley's campaign to perform well in New Hampshire but christe's looming in New Hampshire as someone who has been running a John McCain style Town Hall campaign and some of Haley's supporters in the financial Community have urged Christie to get out of the race so does Haley do that tonight does she say Chris enough's enough you should get out of the race and and throw your support behind me and how does Christie handle this does he take on Haley as someone who's too um quiet when it comes to criticizing Trump uh and someone who's just not willing to go as far as he is uh this is something that could test Haley's ability to Define herself as someone who can be both a supporter of the Trump agenda but also not someone who thinks Trump's electable can Christie be someone who gets a little bit of energy tonight by saying I'm the one to New Hampshire voters who really represents you in that Maverick streak inside the Republican party and as you know Robert there are intimate conversations that go on in this space that we reporters and chroniclers sometimes only hear about much later they're about power they're about momentum but they're also about persu I we hear about them we hear about them all the time major come on we're we're making the calls to make sure we don't hear about them too far too far down the calend not not too far down the field but I mean sometimes these most intimate conversations where politicians will look to one another and say with very few people in the room look I've got the momentum I'm the position of power I can persuade you and if you follow me now this this and this might be discussable or offered at a later time those are the very intimate very defined conversations this will be as you said a test for Haley and Christie in that space because they're going to have to make some decisions in the not distant future both of them one trying to persuade the other or vice versa and look I I've covered Christie since he ran for governor in 2009 I followed him throughout that whole campaign when he ran for re-election got 60% of the vote in 2013 if I've learned one thing covering Christie for over a decade is that no one tells Chris Christie what to do so good luck if the haly campaign and her network wants to somehow push him out of the race uh Christie is someone who believes he is a truth tell and so he's not running campaign just to kind of beat Trump he's not calculating it that way he's on more of a mission he's almost a movement candidate though it's an unusual movement he's someone who has a complicated political history of course his allegiance to Trump for many years but now running as a truth tell it's hard to push someone who thinks of themselves as an AB someone who's outside of the others running it's hard to push them out of the race uh when they believe they have this cause not just a political calculus Robert Costa for us in tuscalo tuscal ala Alabama I guarantee you ladies and gentlemen of Tuscaloosa I will get that right before we conclude in this hourlong presentation um we want to return to the developing story we talked to you at the top about the shooting that took place this afternoon near the University of Nevada Las Vegas campus police say that the suspect involved in that shooting is dead they also say that there are multiple victims and of course authorities are referring to this as an active investigation and they say there is no longer a threat to the general public in and around that area former FBI special agent tom o Conor joins us now Tom based on what limited information we have what is your assessment of what has taken place so far this afternoon near that campus unlb well first of all I'd like to say uh my heart goes out for the families of those who are affected by this obviously and for the First Responders who have to deal with this uh once again the the uh the University of Las Vegas uh um these these uh that whole area the Las Vegas area sadly has a history with 2017 with the active Shooters uh so they they have been training for this type of stuff for literally years um now comes the part that we have the shooter is has been neutralized as we're told and so there's no longer a threat the the work that now starts is going to be uh digging into person's background social media all the different uh Avenues and platforms that they may have been posting on uh talking to friends and family this type of thing to try and determine what drove this person to uh take this action um and the crime scene uh work is is something that takes a long time sadly uh I've been involved in numerous of these crime scenes for major shootings and it does take a long time it can't be rushed um so that's exactly what they're doing there is trying to figure out what happened why it happened and uh and put that together the investigation really just starts here the response is to the active shooter and uh that unfortunately uh had to take place and the shooter is no longer a threat which is a good thing so Tom we will of course speak in generalities because we are deprived of specifics and we want the authorities to assemble those specifics convey them as necessary on timely and accurate basis but in general what does it tell you that the timeline of identifying surrounding and to use your phraseology neutralizing the suspect what does that tell us about this particular what we are led to believe is a mass shooting well it it it tells us that the uh law enforcement and the First Responders did their jobs and they did it uh very quickly and very well um the the important part going forward is to try and determine first of all are there any other persons that might uh have connections with this person that may be a threat and that it doesn't seem like that is the the case uh but the the investigation is going to tell us why this person was led to this what their their conspiracies or mental illness combination thereof uh to to make this person go uh down this road um was the person a student was you know all these things are going to be answered uh during those uh interview with with uh friends family Associates and the real deep dive in this day and age is into social media and what that person is posting when they feel it their uh complete anonymity to be able to do so um so going forward uh this is what's going to be happening and the crime scene teams of both Las Vegas PD the FBI uh are going to likely be uh working each one of these shooting scenes and we don't know how many victims we have so we don't know how many of these uh scenes are going to be uh investigated but that's where the uh the time uh is put into to make sure that all of that is documented even though the shooter is no longer going to be going to trial uh the the fact is that this shooting uh has to be nailed down as to how why uh and and you know what led this person to it and also uh when you you do a full investigation the forensics review of this shooting is to to build on how the person make it more difficult for uh anyone in the future to do this same type of a shooting it's a soft target a school is a soft target and it's it's very hard to to lock that down completely very very difficult Tom as you mentioned you have experience unhappily in this space the first and most declarative thing that authorities said in Las Vegas is there is no longer a public threat based on your experience how important is that declaration and what's the process by which authorities go through to make sure they can issue that declaration with confidence well I mean that's number one right is to uh to take that threat out of the picture whether that is to capture that person and uh you know bring them to justice or engage them um in in a in a shooting uh which appears to happen today many many times when these events take place uh the shooter will uh commit suicide prior to the engagement with law enforcement but the the initial movement of law enforcement is what forces that person's hand and and uh literally stops the threat to additional persons within that school Community or within the Greater Community of Las Vegas uh so that is that is really the most important thing is to respond respond efficiently and quickly and uh save other lives and and that is exactly what it appears happened here today Tom oconor we thank you for your time and your expertise we will have more analysis ahead of tonight's upcoming Republican debate you are streaming America decides welcome back to America decides at a campaign fundraiser in Boston yesterday president Biden said he's quote not sure he would be running for reelection if former president Trump wasn't also in the race later in the day when asked if he would be in the race if Trump wasn't the president said I expect so but look he is running and I have to run speaking at the White House today Biden said what he thinks would happen if there is a rematch in 2024 do you think there is any Democrat who could defeat Donald Trump other than you probably 50 of them you do believe that there I'm not the only one to read but I will defeat him principal Deputy campaign manager for the Biden Harris re-election campaign Quinton folks joins us now from Tuscaloosa I told you I'd be able to get that right Quinton it's good to see you uh what should the country make of this Spade of comments from the president in the last 24 hours about him and Trump and the seemingly political codependency he's described well first of all thank you for having me again major look at the end of the day this is nothing new um the president has said this in fact in 2020 he said that he was running because of the the threat that Donald Trump POs to democracy uh as he was trying to rip away the very fabric of our nation um and so you know I think the president's comments are being taken out of turn here uh but what we should be focusing on is the fact that Donald Trump on Prime Time television last night said that he would rule as a dictator from day one um and we've known for a very long time what that agenda would look like but last night he actually said the quiet part out loud of how he would do it and that as a dictator ripping away healthare continuing to brag about whipping away a woman's right to choose um and so on and so forth and so our campaign is focused on making sure we push out the message of exactly what a second Donald Trump term would do former president said I would be a dictator on day one but only one day that does not uh diminish your concerns uh unfortunately no I I wish it was a laughing matter but it's not and in fact we've seen Donald Trump's agenda as he ruled like a dictator before last tonight I think he just said you know what we've all known out loud uh talking about ripping away Health Care from from tens of millions of Americans driving up the uninsured rate from African-Americans for 20% Latinos for 15% uh continuing to double down you know unfortunately again uh not refusing to stand up to the NRA while kids continue to duck and hide in classrooms from gun violence so this is exactly who Donald Trump is and when he continues to tell us uh we need to believe him uh Reed Hoffman who's the co-founder of LinkedIn confirmed to Barons today that yes he did write a check about $250,000 to Nikki Haley's super pack saying he did so because she's an American institutionalist and is someone he regards as politically competent he's historically been a supporter of Democrats a supporter of President Biden what does it mean to you or doesn't mean anything at all that he is currently dividing some of his financial interests and assets uh look I I think uh I I'm I'm not in a position to tell anybody what they should do uh with their resources when it comes to supporting candidates but it doesn't change anything from the Biden Harris campaign our agenda from day one has been to set out to talk to Americans about what President Biden and vice president Harris have accomplished for them and their daily lives and that includes creating 14 million jobs 800,000 good manufacturing jobs standing up to Big Pharma continuing to drve down the cost of inflation and make uh America more affordable uh for middle- class families and that's exactly what we're going to continue to do what are you watching for tonight there in Tuscaloosa Alabama Quinton um you know look at the same time there's been uh three Republican debates already uh and if you've seen one you've seen them all they're all talking to the same audiences they're all pretending to be Donald Trump they're all racing to the extreme magga base uh and so tonight for this campaign uh we know that what we're going to see tonight on this stage uh is just more of the same none of these candidates tonight are going to stand up to Donald Trump saying that he would rip away healthcare for millions of Americans none of them are going to stand up to Donald Trump bragging about the fact that he ripped away a Roman's right to choose uh and so it's going to be more of the same of what we've seen so far during this Republican primary very quickly Quinton does it matter to you that all three Trump Haley and DeSantis could say in Battleground States they run ahead of the former pres of the current president no I mean look we've always known that this election is going to be a choice I and that this election is going to be close our campaign has had its head down making sure we're out in front communicating with voters we beginning to staff up our early Battleground States uh and that's a lot of work that Republicans are going to have to catch up doing when they come out of this divisive the primary so for us we're going to continue to put our head down and make sure that when the choice is clear uh between President Biden and whoever the Republicans decide to nominate and put forth while they were in a position to win the most votes Quinton folks we thank you for your time as always we have plenty more this hour next we'll take a closer look at what Nikki Haley's campaign is saying you're streaming America decides as candidates get ready to debate tonight it appears Nikki Haley is gaining some momentum possibly to be the top Republican alternative to former president Trump Haley has been rising in polling numbers both nationally and in some of the early primary and caucus States and has received quite a few noticeable endorsements this comes as her Republican competition looks to paint her as the quote establishment candidate Nikki Haley campaign spokesperson Olivia Perez cubus joins us now Olivia how are you going to deal with the establishment logo that they're going to try to stitch or apply to your candidate tonight well look first I'll say that we're excited to be here Nikki's had three winning debate performances already and we're excited for another opportunity for her to address millions of Voters many of whom are still meeting her for the first time so she's going to talk about her vision for a strong America for a proud America she's going to talk about and and share her message about the need for a new generation of conservative leadership as far as the attack are going to come Nikki's way I will say that uh attacks against her are growing by the day particularly from desantis's Team um at this point it is like they are trying to throw spaghetti out a wall and hoping and praying that something sticks so we're getting pretty at use we're getting pretty used to it at this point I think it is very much a reflection of Nikki's rise it is a reflection of how far he how far he has fallen and in terms of this establishment candidate anyone who knows Nikki anyone who knows her record knows that she is a tried and true conservative and we're just looking forward to sharing our message and building off the momentum that we've had over the past several weeks is part of that message that former president Trump is unfit not only for the Republican nomination but for the White House itself well look Nikki is running because she wants to be president of the United States she is sharing her her vision and the importance of why we need a new generation of Republican leaders why we need someone in the White House who can leave the drama and the chaos behind someone who is not focused on personal vendettas and drama and dysfunction and division this country needs someone who can bring people together and that person is Nikki Haley does the country or the Republican Party need someone who can tell the truth about the 2020 presidential election that's right and look this is one of the uh one of the many areas where Nikki disagrees in TR with Trump when she disagrees with him she says it Trump says January 6 was a good good day she says January 6 was a bad day she's uh presenting a very stark contrast between two two visions for America and Nikki is focused on the future we've got a crisis at our border the world is on fire we've got a war in the Middle East we've got a war in Russia China become increasingly aggressive we need someone who can lead this country who can unite this country and that person is Nikki Haley Olivia imagine for a second you're speaking to undecided voters in Iowa and New Hampshire tell them why Nikki Haley is is a better choice than Ronda santis well Ronda sanz's campaign has been flailing for quite some time at this point he has invested over aund million in Iowa alone and he's got absolutely nothing to show for it he's lying about Nikki he's lying about her record we need someone who can bring this country together we need someone who has a Clear Vision who is clear eyed about the threats that this country faces and more than anything we need someone who can grow the tent who can Brad in the party who has broad appeal who is a good messenger who is authentic and honest that person is Nikki Haley she's going to make continue to make that case on the debate stage today and and we're looking forward to building off this momentum carrying it into Iowa carrying it into New Hampshire and then it's on to her home state of South Carolina where voters there know her they love her they have taken a chance on her before and they will do it again Olivia Perez cubis thank you so much for your time thanks for having me up next we will discuss tonight's debate with our political panel how exciting will that be your streaming America decide We are following breaking news out of Las Vegas where the police say at least three people were injured this afternoon in a shooting that took place near the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas and we have just learned President Biden has been briefed on the situation we will continue to monitor this developing and breaking story and update you if and when we we learn more we are just hours away from the fourth Republican presidential debate Nikki Haley Ronda Sanz Chris Christie and VC ramaswami are set to square off in Tuscaloosa Alabama Ashley etn and Matt Gorman join us now Ashley is CBS News political contributor former communications director for vice president kamla Harris and former house Speaker Nancy Pelosi Matt was a senior Communications adviser for Tim Scott's campaign and also had many other iterations in Republican politics Matt and Ashley very good to see you Matt let me start with you come on does this thing even matter let's go come on come on it depends honestly I it matters what on what does it depend it depends on a couple things number one whether the moderators will let him mix it up a little bit see if there's some contrast but look I think what you're seeing tonight is what can possibly shake this out to be the second place candidate with some momentum as we go into the holidays or things will stay static and then iOS after the year Trump has a steady lead can someone emerge as a consensus in second place quickly Matt is it just about Dan santis and Haley tonight no it's actually also about Chris Christie I'd watch him he's talked a big game about what he does in debates but he hasn't really shown up he's been kind of invisible for much the last couple debates he's been going after Haley if he can have a moment like he had in New Hampshire in 2016 where he really crippled Marco Rubio's candidacy maybe against Haley that might PHR at the time and in the room was Nea exactly he's been like Kirk Gibson he's an injured candidate he can't go the distance but can he swing and hit a home run tonight we'll see I don't know who Kirk Gibson you missed out I thought gole Google Vin then you will know then you will know Ashley um get to the baate in a second president said yesterday if it Trump wasn't running I'm not sure I'd be running sure yes okay that is sort of consistent but in the context of well if Trump might not be the nominee might not Biden run again that seems to inject a little bit of I don't know hypothetical into this no no I mean I'm reminded of what my old boss Speaker Pelosi used to say when people would ask her why she hasn't left the chamber and her point was that I'm on a mission I'm not on a timeline and clearly the president's mission is been very consistent with what it was in 2020 which is protect and defend American democracy Donald Trump is the greatest threat to American democracy as you said said earlier in the show he said on day one I'm going to be a dictator and the one thing that we've learned and have come to find out about Donald Trump as he said coming down that ES you have to believe everything the man says he's going to do because he actually pursued and followed up on all of that so I think the president's on a mission and that was his point my mission is to protect and defend American democracy absent Donald Trump not sure it's in great as great a Peril interesting so Haley or DeSantis or chrisy or ramas Swami would not represent the danger that former president Trump does well I mean I think right now the front runner is Donald Trump so the the rest are like you know non-factors do you think think tonight's debate net net matters I definitely think it does I mean I think um what I am most impressed with is how Nikki Haley has really perform she has really what feels like to me has learned the lessons of Hillary Clinton and every other woman that's run on the national stage and she really is setting a new paradig articulate that lesson what is that lesson the core of that lesson well I'll tell you I mean one is you have to be you know again I hate to keep quoting speaker Pelosi but she used to say women have to especially in the political space bring all your assets to bear and that's what you see Nikki Haley doing she's smart she's strong she dishes it as well as she can take it you know she's not backing down from the boys you know I don't I don't want to disparage any other candidate but she's really performing and and positioning herself in ways that women have not using very strong language like finish them when referring to Hamas so I think that this that's what I really want to see because you know I'm a huge fan of women at the national stage and seeing them perform and the way that she's performed is just really Stellar tactically Matt your advice if you're in the disantis camp to your candidate tonight tactically you have to remember at this core stop idealizing debates they're television shows got to hit your mark you got to hit your line you talk about finish them that is a short quotable line that people can remember can hit in a Chiron the next day like if I was saying Governor Dan santis you need to remember that you need to have memorable crisp lines and if you go after inhaling and go getting it back and forth she's come after you with those you have to match her with that as well you're the haly adviser what do you tell her I would tell her be careful uh you're going to be the focus of a lot of incoming tonight you got to know when to respond because she's been very effective in doing so whether no matter it's if it's Tim Scott Ronda Sanders or anybody else very effective dispatching it and pulling an Oppo when needed but also you don't want to hit everyone when when do you be dismissive and ignore it and go on to your next point you got to find that balance that's what she should have been working on I'm sure she has the last couple of days or weeks in debate prep she's got a me she's got a mean counter punch but can I just say this I will say it's over for disantis I I don't even see why we're talking about him I why would he ever debate the governor of California Nome I mean he diminished himself Nome went in with and yet that's part of their pre-debate talking points that he mopped the floor with Governor Gavin Newsome and that means he is the future of the Republican party I think he embarrassed himself I mean I think he made himself look small you know my mom used to always say this don't dress for the job you want dress for the job you you don't dress for the job you have dress for the job actually want I'm not sure why he decided to debate another Governor it was a huge mistake on his part it made him small it made him you know diminished him and listen Gavin Nome only had three goals going into that one one was to to set up a a dynamic to defend Joe Biden set up a dynamic where uh DeSantis was diminished and has set himself up as a future of the democratic party he achieved all of those I'm not sure what DeSantis got out of that debate any advice Matt Gorman you would give Chris Christie swing for the FES man because there's no third act for Chris Christie when he ends this campaign it is done if you really are as good of a debater as you seem channel that energy from New Hampshire and go after whomever you want because otherwise it's just a lot of talk hopefully mostly Trump Matt Gorman Ashley I told you that'd be exciting we're exciting thank you gang a programming new we will have coverage live from Tuscaloosa Alabama after tonight's debate join us meaning join me at 10 p.m. Eastern right here on CBS News former house Speaker Kevin McCarthy soar of shocked colleagues on the hill today by announcing his eminent retirement more from the hill that's next welcome back to America decides former house Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced today he will leave Congress at the end of the year McCarthy's announcement came in a oped at the Wall Street Journal talked about his historically slim majority down to a two vote margin that is is to say with McCarthy's absence McCarthy had been a member of Congress for the last 17 years and was the first person ever ousted from the position of house speaker that happened just a little while ago CBS News Congressional correspondent Nicole Killian joins us now from Capitol Hill Nicole how did that news land with his Republican colleagues well you know in talking to some members uh they said they weren't necessarily surprised I mean keep in mind the filing deadline for Kevin Mar to make a decision as to whether or not he was going to seek reelection was due at the end of this week so irrespective of his oped today he had to make a decision as to whether or not he would seek another term I think maybe what surprised some lawmakers who a fact that he said that he would step down by the end of this year uh saying that he is going to turn his passions into a new Arena uh but look uh you know there's a lot of bad blood that is still left from the speaker race not just at the beginning of the year but obviously the one that took place this fall when McCarthy was housed and while McCarthy at the time said that he has no regrets uh for the decisions he made and how he handled himself as a leader you know it really uh was something that was very upsetting particularly to allies of Kevin McCarthy and many of them kind of reiterated that today that they are upset about how this all went down in terms of the motion to vacate trying to force him out uh particularly with respect to those eight lawmakers who were the ones who ultimately forced his ouer and one of those lawmakers a congressman Matt Gates I spoke to him just a short time ago and I asked him for his reaction he said that he wishes the former speaker well but when I asked him if he feels like he is responsible for driving McCarthy out he said well I'm not the one who asked him to resign he he's the one who made that decision for himself yes I'm sure bat Gates Wish is the former speaker well but he is the one who filed the motion to vacate setting in motion the outing of the former speaker that's just exactly the way Washington phraseology sometimes lands Nicole catch us up on the status as you know it of negotiations in the Senate on combining Aid to Ukraine Aid to Israel and changes in Border policy well it's not a great outlook here on Capitol Hill I mean as you know major for several weeks now uh at least particularly here in the Senate there have been these ongoing discussions over uh border security and Border policy that is something that many congressional Republicans have insisted need to be part of any National Security Supplemental package for it to move forward particularly as it relates to providing additional funding for Ukraine so much so that there was quite a heated briefing just yesterday on the hill particularly on the Senate side where they were briefed by members of the administration and it turned into a bit of a shouting match over some of the concerns that Congressional Republicans have and you know even just today we heard from President Biden who urged Congress to act and was really uh you know gave some strong words and a Stern rebuke uh for Congress and not doing anything on this take a listen frankly I think it's stunning that we've gotten to this point in the first place while Congress Republicans and Congress was willing to give Putin the greatest gift he could hope for and abandon our Global Leadership not just Ukraine but beyond that so even as concerned as the president is about this the likelihood that the Congress will move forward on this uh seems relatively slim as we get ready to go into the holiday recess major Nicole Killian on Capitol Hill thank you very much that does it for today you can stream America decides Monday through Thursday at 5:00 p.m.
