coming up i cast the spell the m5 gets a botox the right way and the back of the m5 is absolutely please such a lovely place welcome back to part three of project riley we are starting by washing this thing for the very first time since 1998 and that is a lie since this car is from 2007. it is clean still 58 shades of gray but clean so i was thinking to repaint this door and that door and then kind of have one color but the problem is everything from here is one color and then everything from back is different color so even if i blend in these two doors front and rear gonna have different color and that's pointless because the front bumper needs to be painted hood has some chipping on it roof is not that great either trunk needs to be polished rear bumper needs to be painted has some marks on it and there's some marks on the right side as well so we got the point where the whole car needs to be painted to look perfect i'm not aiming for perfect i don't care about that i just want to enjoy the car but it doesn't make sense just to paint those two doors on the front bumper when we're still gonna have well maybe 55 and a half shades of grey so it doesn't make sense so what i'm going to do is nothing i'm gonna leave it exactly like it is right now and enjoy it for what it is a v10 six-speed manual and then in a couple of years when i saved up enough money we're gonna paint the whole thing and then it's gonna look perfect we're gonna polish this stream that's easy and replace windshield seals because those are perished and then upgrade headlights we're going to do that now and then it's going to look really decent i hate having it like this but you know you have to have your priorities straight for me the most important thing is that it's mechanically perfect then the interior is perfect and then comes the exterior in the meantime i'm going to have rims repainted as well so that's going to look perfect but when it comes to exterior it's just going to have to stay like this for a while if i were selling it then i would have to fix this but i want to keep this car so i really don't care if it's several different colors of gray outside moving on it's face lifting time and we're going to replace headlights and tail lights for two reasons one and the main one these are uspec headlights and i need euro ones in order to pass german to inspection and two i want to install lci headlights and taillights because they look a lot better than these old dated pre-facelift ones new ones have leds and whatever else and they just look a lot better especially the real ones with led stripes at night they just look spectacular these are the parts brand spanking new oem headlights and taillights made by hella in case it's not clear the taillights they're made in good old spain hola amigos headlights czech republic i could go for pilsner right about now oem wiring retrofitting kitty also pdf instructions which i printed out last night and successfully forgot to grab this morning with me so we're gonna use my laptop instead in case you're wondering why did i go with brand new parts and not used ones save some money because this is a used car after all the reason is very simple these are by xenon adaptive headlights and the going grade for decent pair is usually around 900 950 euro and i searched everywhere all of germany france poland spain wherever i could think of and that's the usual going great these brand new from hella are 1100 euros so it doesn't make sense to buy them use say what 150 euro and get pitted and worn headlights no sir brand new it is same goes with the rear taillights price difference between you and use is not that big just get them new anyway let's get cracking first thing i want to do is put ceramic coating on these parts make them easier to clean and protect them as well gonna clean them with some distilled water don't want to use alcohol and plastic gonna start in the front and whip out the old headlights brilliant design i just i don't understand the design this is just stupid how did they make it fit in such tight space there it is now we need to chop off these two connectors because new lci headlights use only one connector and this is what comes in the kit pins bushings and connector i already did the right side and now we need to crimp the pins and then connect them in the connector according to the instructions my car has adaptive headlights so we are following instructions for that snip them off so now we're going to slide this rubber protection onto the wires here's the pin now i need to strip the wires so i'm sure there's a proper crimping tool for this which i don't have so i'm going to use combination of pliers and just make sure this is properly crimped and when you pull on it it doesn't slide because we need good contact here this zevias then put this in and just ever so slightly crimp the rubber so the pin stays in the place get the needle nose pliers start crimping different pliers now just pull and make sure the wire doesn't move inside and then it's properly crimped which it is and then crimp on the rubber protection that is one pin crimped you can also see that they have like a fin on the side and you can use just pliers and kind of flatten it with the pin so you can slide in the connector easier and click properly otherwise you can create problems and kind of stop this pin from sliding in easily now i need to repeat that step with all of the wires did i mention that the battery is connected because it is very important all pin is connected you also have three thicker wires that use the larger pins now we can grab the connector and start connecting one by one pin one is green gray pin one is here correct the mundo click nicely inside which it didn't there it is nice seven gilbert schwartz good all of them connected and now the final check gonna go again one by one and make sure i connected everything properly blow green that's all properly connected a really key thing here is that you make sure that the pins click push them all the way in and if they don't want to go in grab needle nose pliers gently by the wire and just push it in wiring for the headlights done [Music] short interruption of the program to answer one question that i get asked a lot and that is where do i buy oem parts for my projects and the truth is i've been buying them from the same place for over three years now and that is the porto.de they are the sponsor of this video i reached out to them since i've been a long time happy customer of theirs and now i'm going to share with you how to get good oem parts at the best price the part is an online marketplace for car parts where you can search throughout stores in germany and compare suppliers brands and get the lowest price it's currently offered in these languages and english is work in progress but you can do what i do use google chrome then right click and translate to english you can search by selecting your car and then go through the main categories for this make and model i search using part numbers for example i need a control arm for my e46 touring plenty of hits but since i only buy oem i can tick premium and that will give me well-known premium brands only take one forder and it gives me the best price from this store i actually use this supplier a lot you can see prices from other suppliers and estimated date of delivery if you click on the store name you can see its basic info and reviews at the checkout it will automatically compare and calculate to give you the lowest price if you use different suppliers i scour the internet when buying parts and i always end up finding the best prices on the part so as i mentioned i've been buying parts there for a very long time and never had a single issue if you've been following this channel for a while then you might have figured that i wouldn't bring your company a product that i wouldn't trust myself and i know you'll appreciate the portal as it will help you save some money while buying good quality oem parts for your projects the link is in the description so check them out ninjaflip gonna start by removing the taillights european license plates holder which we're going to install a bit later perfect the box is falling apart that's what happens when you don't have space your car becomes your storage i mean there's nothing else holding you is there well never gonna find that again where did you go how do you no just forget about it first unplug it ouch free of any accident damage in the corners that's good both sides accident free good now we need to bring two connectors that come so now we have two connectors for the left and right headlight connects to the original harness in the car and this goes into the new tail light and then this wire goes all the way to the front of the car underneath the steering wheel to the lcm or lm module whatever it's called the light control module but first we need to verify something and that is that these pins are connected properly because i read online that you have to move pin six and four you have to swap places in order to get it to work and that's not included in instructions so i'm gonna compare that with the diagram that i have real quickly one is brown that is correct and indeed we need to swap wires four and six on the new harness that i bought from bmw for whatever reason it's put in the wrong way because these colors on the connector from the car and the new connector need to match and as you can see pin six here is green gray and on the original connector it's red and black so we need to swap these two wires here their places you can do it on the connector on the car as well or on this one i'm gonna do it on this one because the wires are well exposed easier there they are and that's all that needs to be done now all of the wires match on both connectors like that gotta do the same on that side as well and now it's the fun bit of running these two wires from the trunk area all the way to the front of the car gotta remove plastic fantastic here oh there's a socket here there's a screw there yeah there you go will you come up now or is there more stuff nope comes out get the zip ties all of that is professionally zip tied through here along the wiring harness of the car and now i can put the cover back and then we need to run the wires through here gotta remove this cover underneath the seat now the three dollar question how does this go back we're gonna remove this oh what oh no needle nose pliers oh there's more stuff in here cover for something for golf thing please something previous owner was a golfer the one that popped up earlier gotcha and you know what's also cool this car has rear folding seats love that like that hello remove the rear bench maybe i'll treasure here is there a connector there is these are the heated seeds i forgot take the seed out nothing interesting here just needs a vacuum where my zip ties at is that good it's absolutely place such a lovely place how did it create a knot there now you bastard gotta remove the seat bolster here something's breaking here's what we have so far professional zip tying continues from here here behind this thing up the loom there and then comes out here goes down here behind the seat and then under the sill and now i'm going to reassemble the rear seat and we can continue putting it down the sill all the way to the front gonna need more parts here this rubber seal is destroyed this door seal is destroyed as well come on just pop pop there it is nothing broke i'm going to zip tie these wires once i have the seats out it's going to be easier for now i'm just going to run them behind the trim now i need to remove the trim underneath the steering wheel and access the light module there's a screw there there it is disconnect cables throw that away to disconnect the hood prop thing throw that away as well continue running the wires that's interesting one is shorter than the other by a lot this is all disassembled and this is our lm module and the connector so i'm going to remove it and confirm that this is lm2 it should be because my car is december 2006 and instructions say that all cars after september 2006 have lm2 so we just need to code this for the lci headlights and taillights and it slides right out yep it is lm2 it says on it so you can see there lm2 for e60x ahl adapt the headlights this is the light module connector with the cover removed and now we need to move some wires according to the instructions so move pin 25 which is green gray to pin 63 and pin 40 which is green blue to pin 11. that's 25 removed this is a kerfuffle so this is where having three hands would be useful that's 40 40 goes to 11. and it clicked excellent now we can connect these two that's it haha there you go now we can install headlights and taillights now mandatory cleaning much better these are so pretty perfect and out of the headlights we need to remove a couple of things from the old ones ballast and the adaptive thingy and also the igniter for the bulb turn this so i'm actually not going to bolt in the headlights all the way in because i'm waiting on new xenon bulbs i don't want to use the old ones we are just going to connect it and leave it not fully installed good that's ready to be plugged in leave it uh anyway that's as far as wiring and hardware goes next step is to connect the battery see what works and finally code the yellow module which it's it's kind of complicated it's not if you know how to use ncs expert but i avoid it as much as i can because i just i hate coding so i have a friend who's going to do that remotely for me it's going to connect through my laptop then change some settings in fa whatever ncs battery connected gonna put in the key turn the light switch on and see if we have any smoke flame fire sparks anything from the headlight oh yeah would you look at that this is why i wanted lci taillights they just look freaking awesome at night flip the switch one more time we got xenons i don't smell fire that's good these are flash to pass and high beams onto the coating i guess so a friend is going to connect now and he's going to dull of the coating i know basics and maybe i'll be able to make it work but it's going to take time and time is something that i don't really have we are using ncs expert to code the light module first reading the parameters of the car and then adding needed settings we need to change the spec of the car from the us by removing nb93 and adding nb 91 which is the euro version then language and country version 853 removed and 851 added for germany lastly adding the time criteria march 2007 which is for lci models and old 0906 removed go back click on process ecu and take the light module click execute and it will be coded and that'll be it it's actually super easy when you know what you're doing additionally since i have adaptive headlights and i reuse the old modules they too need to be coded with exactly the same parameters as before just this time you have to take smc module right and left one and code both of them after that no errors and everything is ready to go big thanks to oliver for his help on this and i'll leave his contact details in the description should you need assistance with tuning and or coding and that's it a really nice fella finished coating the things for me everything is working now angel eyes the stripe the mirrors the adaptive thingies he recorded that as well talking five minutes to do all of this i'd be struggling for days to do this and look how beautiful it looks i mean the lci headlights and taillights they're just spectacular one of the best things bmw did for this car i mean look at the old ones they look so sad all right the next step is the fog light not sure if it's needed for german tooth probably is but i want to get it in anyway and it's only one wire and i need to get different switch and run one wire from the switch to the lm module and that's it doesn't even need coating or anything and he also changed the spec of the car from us to eurospec for the light module so now he knows it's in germany in its home country and it's coated and set up as a eurocar yeah this looks so good i can't see it but i can't stop smiling because it looks so freaking good i removed the wrongly placed badge some time ago and it's time to reinstate it on the back of the car got a typewriter tape double-sided sticky foamy tape measuring device and measurements let's raise the car in the air make it a bit easier so first we measure from this line to here 24 millimeters or 310 inches pretty sure that's accurate and we take one long one make sure that's 24 as well that it is so then we have 33 millimeters from here to here 383 inches right about there my typewriter is not working so the funf is going to go here and then m is going to go there double sticky tape thingy on the back of it take your butter knife and then carve around it form a nice shape where this thing is going to stick and there it is right there straight as an arrow push it in it is nine millimeters between the five and the m which is here that's the one remove the tape ah correct batch placement done got the new bulbs night breakers really good bulbs gonna throw them in quickly so i was thinking i did put ceramic coating to protect and make headlight easier to clean but yesterday i was looking at the headlights on d46 and if you remember i bought brand new oem headlight covers when i refurbished them and they already have some pittings and stuff from driving on the highway so i thought it might be better to put ppf or like clear film on these brand new headlights because these are really expensive on d46 it doesn't really matter you can throw them away buy new ones for like 60 euros for this headlight you cannot do that so i called my buddy who owns a really nice detailing shop here in frankfurt and it turns out it is illegal to put any kind of film on the headlights in germany even if i put transparent clear ppf film whatever that's meant for the headlights it's illegal in germany they can pull me over actually they pulled him over and his car gave him a 68 euro fine and a one point and he had to remove it it's absolutely ridiculous that something like that is illegal especially i can understand if it's like tinted or whatever but like clear to protect the headlight it just doesn't make sense and if you complain how california is tough on cars with their smog and whatever just come to germany you'll see what's bad we cannot do anything fun or useful here anyway let's put these bulbs in these are going to stay as pairs i'm going to put them in the trunk but since the whole headlight is new i just want brand new bulbs as well because they're going to give the best light output and night breakers they're probably the best in the game here we are oh that scared me these will go in the trunk and spares not that you can replace them on the side of the road because you need to take the headlight out to replace these bulbs brilliant design now i'm going to quickly clean behind the headlight because that's mandatory i gotta detail the engine bay as well at one point but not now it's good enough so remove the cover make it easier to install connect the connector click and that's the face lifting done it looks spectacular if i might say so myself oh yeah [Music] and now onto the rear suspension if you remember in part one we found that the rubber on ball joints is perished on guidelines and i think also control arms so we're going to replace all of that because that's not going to fly with german tooth now let's do some wrenching up you go lock you down by the way a really nice subscriber sent me these gloves muxi flex and they're just the most comfortable thing in the world thank you andres zip zip [Applause] up there we are gotta need new brakes soon as well they're not horrible but they have a tiny lip minimum thickness 22.4 millimeters let's measure 22.64 millimeters so that's nearly on the limit 22.4 is minimum thickness so you're gonna need new brakes front and back first order of business whip up the sway bar because it's aftermarket and i don't have two certificates or approvals for it so it needs to go because it will not pass inspection with an aftermarket sway bar for which you don't have papers out it comes unfortunately bad boys bad boys what you gonna do what you gonna do when they come for you should really learn the words extract this sway bar i think only italians design cars where you have to remove subframe or something like that to remove the sway bar luckily bmw isn't like that what now you ask can tell you self-incrimination but you'll see let's kick off with the control arm remove the stuff on it there we are oh yeah gotta say suspension work on d60 much easier than on e39 actually let's leave the bolt in and break loose the ball joint these are the torn ball joints get some penetration fluid breaker bar and this is a breaker bar by the way it's extendable ratcheting breaker bar there he goes no something is slipping why are you being so stubborn there you go oh this is hard work yeah see the ball joint is actually okay in this case only the rubber is perished but bulging itself good fresh control arm going in click you bastard click the bushing gets torqued with the car on the ground next is the guidelinks and since this bolt is used for alignment this is eccentric bolt we're gonna put mark on it and we have to put it well pretty much in the same position or as close as possible so that this car can drive to the alignment shop it needs to get alignment after all of the suspension work is done but for now we just need to get it as close as possible there we are now we can loosen this bolt yeah come on you eccentric millionaire ah fingers see the ball joint is not too bad and there isn't a ton of dirt in it so it might be salvageable if i can find someone to fix this pop this in so torque wrench cannot fit in there so we're just going to give it a good good and tight actually maybe it can maybe it can finally find a use for my chicken leg extensions put it there then the torquing device goes in yep now let's torque that's it the bolt it's getting torqued down with the car on the ground that's what the repair manual says we're gonna listen to it the other side completed as well here's the new oem sway bar or maybe it's the same one and it was just painted can be sure i really can't be sure i just work here there's no way i can know you know but let's install it let's see if i made a mistake by putting the wheel on i think i did probably shouldn't have done that but let's find out all right all right all right there we are that was the ticket good and that's it now i can lower the car drive it back and forth torque the bushing and the guide link hmm [Music] how i'm gonna get my torque wrench in there that's negative there sir baby here there we are now we're in business and for a guide link we just need to line up the marks and then tighten it because that's going to come off again when the car gets alignment there we are and that's it rear suspension done everything else looks perfect all other bushings trailing arm subframe all of that looks in great condition so i don't see any issues here for the tooth inspection next time we're going to be back here is probably when we're going to replace the brakes and shock absorbers 220 000 kilometers they're probably tired but for now this will do this will do just fine because i just i need to pass that inspection so i can finally drive this car it's raining outside so i have to improvise but this will conclude the episode in the next one we are going to detail this disgusting interior take out the seats scrub the carpets even the headliner because there's ketchup boogers some white stuff on it i mean how do you even do that also replace the rims refurbish the tires no the other way around replace the tires refurbish the rims few odds and ends and this car is more or less ready for its clash with german tooth inspection and it's about time it's been way too long and way too much money and i just i need to finally drive it can't wait for that anyway mahalo for watching subscribe if you haven't it helps and i'll see in the next one the next episode is going to be on e39 m5 and we are going to do a yearly service on it adios you
