[Music] let's talk eye relief and in particular how to set your scope up to get the eye relief correct first of all what is eye relief well eye relief in simple terms is a distance that you need to have your eye back from the rear lens of the scope to get a perfect round circle and a perfect sight picture it's often mentioned in the specs of the scopes that the eye relief is three inch four inch seventy five hundred mil but what often isn't talked about is uh with variable scopes and let's face it that's what most of us use now and in this case this is a 4 to 12 by 50. now what happens is that i relief distance will often change from 4 power to 12 power in other words the distance is going to get longer and shorter how do i overcome that well the first thing you need to do is ask yourself what am i going to do with this rifle now for argument's sake i've got my long range rifle here that's got a 5 to 25 on it it's only ever going to be shot off the ground or 95 of the time so i would set my eye relief lying down in a prone position move it backward and forward probably set it on where i would be around the common power in this case as much as it's a 25 power i wouldn't very often go over about 15 18 power so i'd probably set it somewhere around there just to get that backward and forward to get that circle perfect now in this situation this little seiko 204 this is a bit about an all-rounder and this can be where it gets a little bit tricky to get that eye relief right so two things that i've found have worked for well for me is first of all when i'm hunting or walking around with this rifle and something presents i'm most likely going to be on the lower powers a three or four power so what i want to do is just throw it to my shoulder eyes close pull it in and open my eyes if i'm not getting a perfect sight picture and i'm having to move backward and forward on three or four power i'd first of all lightly lightly tighten the rings just so i can move it then what i do is move down to the prone position put my bipod on and in this situation where i'm going to take those longer shots i'm most likely going to have it wound up to 10 or 12 power so when you're in the prone position i'll get myself settled in eyes closed settle in open up and again same principle if i need to move it forward and backwards on highest power just try it might take a few goes stand up prone position wind down to three power wind up to 12 power or whatever minimum or maximum of your scope is but it is time well spent the better that you get that alignment so when you throw that rifle up to your shoulder in a hunting situation or when you lay in behind this rifle and you're doing a bit of long range stuff the better you get this set the better you will shoot and it's all these one percenters that make all the difference [Music] you
