so let's check out this extremely advanced double strategy tactic so let's first watch this point two times in a row and then we'll analyze it so that's pretty cool that was done on match point so first everyone is standing in the exact correct spots we've got the server pretty close to the singles line the server's partner in the middle of the box the returner's partner just slightly closer to the center t compared to the singles t and we've got the returner standing behind the surface i'm sorry standing slightly behind the baseline to give him enough time to react to the ball so everyone's in the right spot love it so the first thing to know is that the server is serving and balling and the opponents know that so everyone knows that this guy serves in volleys why because this is match point so they've seen him serve over and over again they know he's going to serve and he's going to come forward the next idea when the return is hit typically the return in doubles is going to be hit cross court if the return is hit down the line it can run the risk of being hit to the net player who's going to hit through the middle or even better yet nail it at this person who has very little time to react and most likely going to win the point so this guy right here has to hope that the return is going to go cross court away from the opposing net player and that's exactly what happens the returner hits it cross court now at this moment right here you can see that the returner is making contact where should this player be looking he's got to look somewhere and he should be looking at one of the opponents who should he be looking toward and if you said this person you would be correct when the ball is behind you here's a really simple concept when the ball is behind you meaning it would this is you and the ball is being hit from your partner behind you you want to look at the opposing net player and the reason is they are the first person who can hurt you they're the first person who can hit the ball so you want to make sure that the ball gets by that person and then you don't have to look at them anymore you can turn your eyes toward the partner and that's exactly what happens the ball goes cross court and he notices hey i just heard the return this guy's not even moving his racket's not moving he must not be hitting the ball so he knows to now turn his attention to the servant volleyer the servant volleyer is coming in and this guy sees that he's hitting the servant volleyers hitting a backhand volley he's hitting his backhand volley which is typically the weaker volley and he's hitting from behind the the service line so those two things tell us you know what this ball is going to go across court he's trying to avoid the neck guy if you want to take your doubles game to the next level you have to be able to jump this shot the volleyer is going to hit this ball cross court and we're going to see this the returner's partner move in at an angle and jump this shot and he actually poaches you can see he's moving before the ball is ever struck he's already moving to get in the way of this ball now you could say but ryan what if this volleyer hits down the line and he makes this move well if he does i guess this partner better hope he can go over and get it or they're just willing to lose the point sometimes you got to put all your eggs in one basket here's another thing it's match point so the volleyer here is probably not going to do anything that's too risky too out of the ordinary he's probably just going to play solid strategy and tactics this player knows that and says no i'm gonna jump this expecting the ball to just go across court and he does and now he gets a volley that he can crush now you've got three basic places to hit this volley you can hit it to this side of the court you can hit it down the middle or you can hit it to this side of the court so we'll go you know option one option two option three i'll tell you that the best option in this situation is actually option number three now you might be thinking wait a minute ryan why wouldn't you hit it right down the middle there's no one there well you're right but in the heat of the moment it can be hard sometimes to know exactly what to do with the ball so here's an easy way to win more points when you're at the net and you've got a volley you can see this ball is slightly above head level when you're playing the ball above net level and you want to hit hard and be aggressive aim for the side of the court where the person closer to you is standing so he hits this ball to or toward the neck on you can see the neck guy actually turns his head because he doesn't want to get smacked because he sees that guys oh he tries to like get out of the way of the ball to not get hurt so it's important that you are not hitting this ball toward the person with more time to react but you're hitting this ball toward the person with less time to react what he doesn't want to do is hit it anywhere near the middle and in case he doesn't do much with the ball this guy might have enough time to react and hit it into this side is that a high probability no but it's higher than if he just hits it to this player who has no time to react and is literally dodging and turning his head to not you know um uh did not get hit in the face with that ball and obviously you know they pump their fist they do their little you know celebration high five it's such a cool thing so let's watch this point again one more time and then we'll diagram it on the big board now if you love strategy as much as i do and you're looking for new tactics and ways to beat your most frustrating opponents then i want you to get these singles and doubles playbooks from fuzzy yellow balls these books are unreal and they're strategies from the best players in the world the brian brothers martina navratilova gigi fernandez it's strategy after strategy and what's cool is each strategy and play that you can run both in singles and doubles comes with a qr code just take your phone open up the camera app put it over the qr code and up pops the video of will hamilton teaching you the exact strategy to get the singles and doubles playbooks just use my link in the description below i'm also going to pin it in the first comment now in addition to learning those strategies you also want to branch out and find new people in your local area to compete against to practice with and even find a coach who's going to help you use those strategies so join play your court using my link player court dot com slash two minute tennis and when you do you get 50 off when you join all right we're talking about poaching as the returners partner typically we think of poaching as the server's partner but to level up your game you gotta use this type of play so this doesn't just have to be done against a servant volleyer it just so happened that it was against a certain volume but let's say he doesn't serve in volley he serves he stays back if that's something that you're accustomed to seeing your returner is now hoping most likely to return cross court your partner when your partner is returning serve man down when your partner is returning serve you've got to focus and turn your head toward the server's partner looking at them because if your partner accidentally just hits it right to them if you see their racket go up and you're looking for it you'll know to start backing up to have more time to react if that player hits it toward you when you see this player the server's partner just watching the ball go like this you know they're not hitting it so that's your cue to then go forward so you can go forward and then just before this person hits you can jump the route right you can say oh you know what i'm going to assume this ball is going cross court especially if it's match point set point for you most likely your opponents are not going to be super aggressive they're not going to take risks they are going to kind of toe the line on strategy and do something very basic and because of that you can predict that that ball is going to go cross court notice i'm making him move or this player move in diagonally because you want to move perpendicular to the path the ball is going to be taking that's the shortest distance to poach that ball and when you do this you do not want to hit the ball back to the opponent who just hit and i wouldn't even tell you to go through the middle because it's too close for this person if you don't put enough on it they can get that ball so that's why i would say pick on this person really focus on hitting it to the person with very little time to react if you're the type of person who you never just poach you never just go then what happens is you play too safe your opponents always know what you're going to do will you sometimes go for that ball and the ball goes down the middle yeah look when you fall in love there's a chance you're gonna have your heart broken bad stuff happens but that's the only way you get the good stuff right i don't know why that analogy came to mind but here we go so so the ball is going cross court you've got to be willing to you know i'm jumping and you're going to have to go before they hit the ball and i'm not saying like an hour before where they easily see that you go and then they go down the line it's just before they hit you go and if you do it at a time like a set point for yourself like a match point for yourself chances are your opponents are going to be more conservative and when they do hit it cross court to hit that conservative shot you're already there and you can blast it right at the person with no time to react start using these in more advanced strategies you can't just say well this is my side of the court and that's your side of the court start jumping this cross court ball and poaching it and slamming it not to hurt them but slamming it to that side of the court aggressively and there's no doubt you're going to gain confidence with more matches and play much better tennis this is ryan reedy from
