EXTREME BREAKFAST NOOK MAKEOVER | DIY PICTURE FRAME MOLDING

hey everyone welcome back to my channel my name is Kristen and today we're actually remaking over this breakfast nook this was one of the first spaces that I transformed when we moved in here 3 years ago and as I've moved from one room to the next style has evolved and my taste has evolved and now this room is kind of feeling a little bit dated to me it feels a little bit messy and colorful and it's not really matching up to the rest of the house so I want to do a mini makeover in here transform this space bring it up to speed and make it look cohesive with the rest of our house I want to change up the seating situation in here and actually downsize it because we really only use the side of the kitchen to quickly have a cup of coffee it's like a little touchdown area it's not really our meal area or entertaining space we take that over to the dining area and living area so this is more of just like an extension of our kitchen that I want to make a little bit more functional I want to get rid of the accent wall I want to switch up the art neutralize this space and refresh it with some new furniture so I'm really excited to be partnering with Castle re on this makeover they have some of my favorite furniture and I've had my eye on these gorgeous dining chairs so we're going to bring them in here I think they're going to be perfect you guys will see more of the furniture later on but I want to take everything down get the space cleared out so we can paint and start from [Music] scratch all right I'm headed over to Benjamin Moore to pick up some paint supplies we need some primer to cover the green wall and a Fresh coat of paint I think I'm going to be going with simply white by Benjamin Moore because it's a Warm Neutral white that I think will work really well with the existing cabinets and just freshen up the [Music] [Music] space [Music] [Music] okay so that did take quite a few coats of primer a little bit more than I expected but I think that's a pretty good job of covering the green now we're going to be painting this entire side of the kitchen from this wall over with a nice neutral white I'm using Benjamin Mo simply white in an eggshell finish I always start out by cutting the corners and edges so then I can go ahead and roll on the [Music] paint [Music] okay so we're pretty much back to the way the room initially oh oh that was just such a big earthquake I'm like shaking I hope it doesn't happen again that was like so scary I just panicked and didn't even know where to go oh I can't believe I caught that on camera okay I just watched that back and I look so freaked out I am freaked out but that is hilarious that I caught that on camera like I just ran oh and didn't know what to do all my pictures are still hanging though that's a good sign um anyways let's try and recover here now we're moving on to some picture frame molding you guys know I love picture frame molding every time I do it I'm obsessed with the results it's affordable it's an easy DIY and it completely elevates a room we have pretty detailed cabinets we have picture frame molding on the pantry doors so I feel like it's just going to make sense to panel this breakfast nook so usually when I do this I plan it out with tape I've already done that and planned three rectangles across here the middle one is going to be the largest and then we're going to have two equal sized rectangles on either side we're also going to be paneling the entryway to this space and finishing it off on this wall as well so it looks really complete I already went by the hardware store to pick up 19 pieces of this trim it is wood very lightweight trim that's going to be super easy to cut it has a nice shape to it if you're looking for something similar I'll try and Link it down below so I've measured this W to be 133 1/2 in and then the height is 88 1/2 in so I'm just drawing out on a little notepad the measure measurements here so I can start creating squares dividing up the space and making this all fit I'm just using my level that has a measurement built into it to make little ticks along the wall so I know exactly where all my trim pieces should be and then I'll use my laser level to mark it even further I'm going to be using my miter box and saw to make these Cuts you just line up your wood to the 45° Mark that's already marked on this miter box and just start sawing and this whole saw and box comes together for like $15 so it's a very affordable quick easy way of cutting your wood line it up and then use the brad nailer to just attach it to the [Music] wall I've learned that it's easiest to work from the bottom up so as long as you have that bottom piece lined up and leveled it really makes it easier to place the other trim pieces correctly so always start from the bottom and work your way [Music] up [Music] I woke up this morning and finished up the paneling so now it's finally complete and we can move on to painting it this time I decided to install all of the trim first and then paint over top I've done it differently pretty much every single time I've done wall paneling but I thought this would save me a little bit of time and it allows me to fill all of the gaps fill all of the nail holes and then paint right over top so now we have the entryway paneled which I love it's framed out really nicely I finished up this wall here so it matches up with this panel I just installed and then we have the main wall even though I haven't even painted it yet it already feels fancier more put together blends with the rest of the kitchen it was definitely the right choice to make in here [Music] now I'm going over all of the trim pieces with simply white by Benjamin Moore in an eggshell finish as well so it's the exact same paint that I used on the walls so that it creates a flush even [Music] look all right it is furniture delivery day I just got a call from castley that they're around the corner they should be here any minute with the furniture I am so excited to be partnering with castley on this makeover I can't wait to show you guys what I picked out for this space I've partnered with castley a few times on some makeovers and the furniture has always been top tier quality extremely comfortable looks incredible the weight is always very significant and feels extremely highend so I cannot wait to have these pieces in the breakfast nook all of my cast pieces are here so we can start putting together the room I'm going to start out with this rug this is a 5x8 D rug it's called the lelu juk rug from Castle this rug is moisture resistant and durable so it's a perfect choice for a space like this there's something about a juk rug that actually makes the space feel casual and chill like especially when you're putting picture frame molding up that feels very formal and fancy a rug like this kind of helps balance out the space now before we had two storage benches here against this wall but I want to do a sideboard instead the kitchen island is also finished in a honey oak butcher block and we're bringing in Castle re's honey Oaks loone sideboard to really tie together that finish ooh I think this color is going to be perfect oh my goodness wow it's so beautiful we still have to add the hardware it comes with brass hardware which is going to be really pretty but I love the height of this so this is the Salone sideboard they also have a Sloan media unit that's a lot lower and this is actually a limited edition color it works perfectly in here but once this sells out they won't be restocking it but they do also have it in a darker wood finish that is so elegant okay I am obsessed with this I love the movement and texture of the fronts and sides they're even soft clothes my favorite look how perfect and then I'm also going to be installing some shelves inside you can adjust them to different heights and installing the brass poles but wow this is going to be a piece that I have forever you can use it in every single space for storage for styling it's incredible you can always tell quality by the weight of a product and these are very very [Music] heavy all right now on to the dining chairs I'm so excited about these these are new from castley they're called the C slip covered dining chair and I wanted to do just two dining chairs in here and these do come in a pair of two ooh the fabric this is literally the perfect color in here see how this whole Space is just like vanilla creamy Chic I love it these are removable slip covers and they're actually machine washable so if you're scared about light Linens this is actually a really good option so this dining chair only comes in the bleached linen fabric but but if you're ever looking for anything else castley does offer free fabric swatches so if you want to plan out your space that makes it really easy so you pretty much just put the slip cover on velcro it down to the base I still have to steam it because it's a bit wrinkly from being boxed up throw the cushion on and wow got myself a very comfortable dining chair this is so cute the C dining chair also comes in an armed version which I think would be perfect to put on either ends of your dining room table this is what I was going for in here all of these castley pieces look so good together and these chairs are so comfortable this is the type of chair I've been needing something that you can sit on for a long period of time as you sip your coffee it's super cute if you guys haven't checked out Castle R already definitely check I'm reinstalling the same curtains that I used before they are pleated linen curtains that just really work with this new design as [Music] well good morning or here for another day I'm waiting on some products to be delivered so hopefully they come in today like new door handles for the pantry I want to swap those out for something better and then we're bringing in the table today finishing up this wall here we have details to add styling pieces and then we should be done so I'm really excited to see it all coming together it's already exactly what I was picturing but better really so I love the results I should have done done this a long time ago cuz this space kind of always bugged me when people would come over it's like oh look at all these pretty rooms and then you'd come into here and it felt a little like oh that doesn't really go or I don't know maybe it wasn't so bad but I am really happy with the results so let's get to it okay so we kind of have a table situation I have two table options they're actually the exact same table but two different sizes so this is the first option it's honestly such a cute table I love the marble top it has like a mix of warm tones and cool tones and then the base is that beautiful cast iron heavy base it feels very Parisian I feel like I'm in Europe at a cafe so this is the beastro size which I think is honestly perfect for a little table for two moment Coffee Spot the next option we have which is still in transit to be delivered I don't even know if it's going to make it here on time it's a larger size the only thing about that is I'm worried it's going to start interfering with the sideboard and then I'm like do we even need that big of a table this is just supposed to be that casual touchdown spot so I don't really know either way we'll figure it out but I love the way the style of this table works in here I think it really ties together the picture frame molding well and the black base with the black curtain rod and all the other accents that we're bringing in is just going to wrap it all up and tie it in a both these pantry doors definitely needed some new hardware the black finish is definitely going to help tie together all of the other details around the [Music] space this is something I should have done the first time I did this makeover and that's installing a mirror on this wall across the room here you have the lake view so I think we might as well take advantage of this Reflection Point and reflect that beautiful scenery up on this wall it will also help make this area look larger but look how cute this mirror is I always use this method to hang anything on the wall I use a piece of painters tape Mark where the holes should be bring that piece of tape over to the wall and just drill into the exact holes that you marked this will give you the perfect placement every single timeo okay it's always a little scary hanging mirrors because they're pretty heavy but I think we've got it all lined up ready to go let's see did I do it wow you just get to enjoy the views from the kitchen wherever you are now this is so great I love the style of this as well even like the nice rounded top it's subtle it works with the furniture this is just perfect I found this at HomeGoods I went out the other night to try and find the perfect mirror for this space and found this it's like we've totally added a window now I'm going to be reinstalling my wall sconces on either side just exactly in the same spot that they were before these still work with the design tying together all of the black elements and these are actually hardwired sconces that I don't have hard wirring for so again I'm using battery powered light bulbs I use these all around the house they just screw in like a light bulb they're rechargeable and they're remote controlled so you can turn them on and off with your remote I feel like they just add a lot more Flex [Music] ability there now our lighting is reinstalled super easy and quick if you guys haven't tried out this lighting trick yet definitely try it out in your home it adds so much atmosphere some Dimension to your flat walls it's such an easy thing to do so I'll have a few of my favorite little wall sconces linked Down Below in the description box you guys can check those out but I think it's finally time to start decorating I think we can bring in all of our finishing touches now and bring the space to [Music] life [Music] okay I think the breakfast nook is finally complete it's feeling like a Shau Cafe beautiful little corner of our home and I cannot wait to show it to you guys if you can think back to what our breakfast nook used to look like you might remember a half green accent wall a DIY bench lots of pillows a little bit can't believe the way it turned out I feel like I should have done this a long time ago but it is so elegant it really fits with the style of our house it has so much more flow it feels more spacious and bright and honestly I feel transported to a different place with our little mirror bouncing the view the gorgeous Furniture the lighting it just feels so much prettier so I'm so glad I did it now
