[Music] hello and welcome to this video about visiting Petra Petra is one of the most awe-inspiring archaeological sites in the world located in Jordan it is a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the new Seven Wonders of the World Petra was once a thriving city of the nabataeans an ancient Arab tribe that traded with the Greeks Romans and Egyptians today Petra is a popular tourist destination that draws visitors from all over the world to explore its stunning temples tombs and monuments the history of Petra Petra was founded in the 6th Century BC by the nabatians a nomadic tribe from Arabia the nabataeans were skilled traders who built a prosperous City at Petra thanks to its strategic location at the crossroads of several trade routes Petra became a wealthy city with a thriving economy and the nabataeans built impressive structures such as the treasury the monastery and the sick in the First Century A.D the Roman Empire annexed Petra and the city became a Roman province the Romans added their own architectural style to Petra building a theater public baths and a colonnaded street however in the 4th Century A.D the city declined and was eventually abandoned due to a change in trade route and earthquakes Petra remained hidden for centuries and it was only rediscovered in 1812 by Swiss Explorer Johann Ludwig Burkhardt since then Petra has become a popular tourist destination and a symbol of Jordanian Heritage exploring Petra Petra is a vast archaeological site that covers over 264 square kilometers it is home to over 800 structures including temples tombs and monuments all carved out of the Sandstone Cliffs the most famous of these structures is the treasury a Monumental building that was carved in the first century BC the treasury is also known as al-qasna which means the treasury in Arabic it is one of the most photographed and recognizable structures in Petra to explore Petra visitors must walk through a narrow Canyon called the sick which is over one kilometer long and up to 80 meters high the sick is a natural rock formation that was formed by the erosion of the Sandstone cliffs walking through the sick is an experience in itself as visitors are surrounded by towering Cliffs that change color depending on the time of day at the end of the sick visitors are greeted by the stunning site of the treasury the treasury is carved out of the Sandstone Cliffs and stands at over 40 meters tall it is decorated with intricate carvings of mythological figures and animals and is believed to have been used as a tomb for a nabatian king beyond the treasury Petra is home to many other impressive structures including the monastery the Roman Theater and the Royal tombs the monastery is the largest structure in Petra and is believed to have been used as a temple or a monastery it is located on top of a hill and can only be reached by climbing over 800 steps the Roman Theater is a well-preserved theater that was built by the Romans in the 1st Century A.D it could seat up to 8 000 people and was used for theatrical performances and Gladiator games the Royal tombs are a group of tombs that were carved into the Sandstone Cliffs they are some of the most elaborate structures in Petra and are believed to have been used as tombs for nabati and kings and queens visiting Petra to reach Petra visitors can fly into Queen Alia International Airport in Amman and take a three-hour drive to the city alternatively visitors can take a bus or hire a private car to reach Petra once at the site visitors must purchase a ticket and walk through the narrow Canyon called the sick to reach the main attraction the treasury overall visiting Petra is an amazing experience that offers a glimpse into the ancient world the beauty and Grandeur of this city carved out of sandstone Cliffs will leave visitors in awe and wonder like the video and remember to subscribe to our Channel
