in this episode we are exploring an abandoned soviet military base in eastern germany originally established as a zeppelin port in the early 20th century and later as a glider training camp for the first world war the current structures on the site were built in 1933 for the german air force to train engineers and mechanics [Music] after the war the soviet army took over and used the buildings buildings look pretty sealed up that's an interesting building yeah i think i spot an open door yeah the front door is open right there let's check it out so hmm these windows look like they're from some kind of zombie game and all the original windows are on the floor the original colors are showing behind each layer of paint i got the squatty potties [Music] since the outer structures were empty we decided to head straight to the main building let's check out this building so it looks pretty central to the whole facility [Music] wow this is pretty cool [Music] it looks like cars drive through here frequently so there might be security yeah right to the gate we should try to maximize our time spent inside the buildings and minimize the time spent standing right in the street so let's head in [Music] oh this is nice i was hoping we'd find stuff like this in here it has some stupid vandalism on it but it's mostly intact the way the ground slopes up makes me think this would be a theater yep the seats are still here it is it's really dark yeah there's no lighting in here whatsoever but it's pretty cool nothing on the stage not even any soviet art they probably would have just shown all kinds of propaganda films in here i think that's just the ceiling crumbling as we sit in here yeah maybe this mural is in really bad shape compared to the other one different kind of paint needs yeah this is interesting too this art piece this building's made of made up of sticks looks like they're just sticks not even wood slats [Applause] going this way because i like this mural the whole wall has been painted here yeah it would have been like you're walking through the mural well a lot of it is missing look this would have been a mural too down this whole wall yeah the entire wall the whole wall would have been a mural wow and this side too still see small details left 20 years ago this place would have been amazing more murals every wall in here would have been something it's amazing this could have even been a repurposed nazi building too yeah because a lot of the soviet military stuff here was not built yeah it was just repurposed after world war ii so who knows maybe underneath some of this paint there's even nazi murals and propaganda if the soviet stuff looks this bad there's no way you're gonna find anything underneath it was probably stripped away because you know yeah the soviets wouldn't want to leave any trace of that russian text looks like a concentration camp it does why did they paint a depiction of a concentration camp in the soviet military base yeah i mean maybe they were just trying to have like a reminder of what their enemy did and why they were the enemy and such that's part of the propaganda nazi it has an army yeah it's so it's depicting the nazis carrying out genocide so clearly this was painted by soviets that is my best guess [Applause] okay this wing is definitely used by the soviets as well here's a mural in the stairwell what looks like the russian space station some old winter jackets that's the u.s capital price propaganda against the u.s propaganda showing civil rights protests in the u.s this looks like a great um i don't know why it looks like a cell more newspaper do you know we can't read it what year are those i don't know 1990 i think i see up there i see 1919. that one says 1990 up here 1919. the why would there be such a no it can't be a printed date here's a 1990 right here also okay that's probably referring to something else maybe something happened in 1919 where this newspaper has been in business since 1919 yeah maybe it's a forest by the pond yeah with some russian text right in the middle of new york oh for an access panel 1976 we could probably take the basement all the way to the opposite yeah that's what i'm thinking wow there's a huge room under the theater probably just storage what would they use this for [Applause] [Music] this was a gymnastic theory but also a gym it looked like a factory from the outside well it has a gantry crane in their gym maybe it was repurposed at the gym yeah it's a mixture of gym and factory yeah because that ceiling over there definitely looks like a factory yeah for sure i think the soviets just repurposed the building yeah this definitely used to be a factory these structures at the flight school have no future plans and will continue to decay [Music] you
