all right i'm going to give a quick demonstration on kitchen lithography and i think i finally figured out what we were doing wrong in the class we are going to wet our plexiglas plates so that the tin foil sticks to it shiny side up use your hand to smooth out any bubbles try to get out all the creases as much as you can flip it over i'm just going to fold this on the back so that the foil stays on the plate trying to make a flat surface all right then i'm going to grab a paper towel just make sure it's dry so that when i take the oil crayon onto the foil it will stick to it i'm going to do a simple drawing just so you can demonstrate the process of kitchen lithography and i think we all agreed we want to press kind of hard so you can see the line feel free to add some shading i'm going to add a little bit of design to my cup and add a simple handle and this time why don't i add a saucer and i'm going to experiment with just adding a little bit of texture on the negative space around the cup just to put a little texture in it and see what the ink picks up all right that's the first step the second step i'll move this over so you can see it we're going to put the plates in a coke bath and it's going to stay in here for about one minute and you can kind of see the bubbles and the the plates i'm just going to rock it back and forth check my time [Music] can you get in close to see if the bubbles okay about 30 more seconds making sure all the ink is covered with the coke or the cola it can be any cola okay it's been on there a minute i'm going to drain the cola off all right set it down here now we're going to just wipe the cola off a little bit next we're going to take oil and we're going to remove the oil crayon that we put on the drawing and in a minute you should be able to see to see a ghost appearance underneath it see how it's removing the ink and it's a wet sponge i'm not sure if you can see it can you see a ghost image on there now i think i finally figured out the trick to make this work for us as a class first of all your plate needs to be wet and the second trick i believe is that your ink cannot be too thick i think the area we're using up here the ink was too thick so it was inking the whole plate up so i'm just inking up the area you can see the image up here again then i'm going to take some water wet it down again roll the brayer in different directions and i'm pressing it on there pretty good if i see any scumming that i don't need one on there just take your sponge and wipe off the areas you don't want the ink to go and sometimes it takes a lot of trial and error before you finally figure out what makes a project work looks like you need just a little bit more ink and i'm starting to build up here so i'm going to stop wipe my hands off so that i don't get my paper full of ink take my test paper lay it over the print and use the back of the spoon and you rub the ink onto the paper again this is a type of print making where we're using kitchen materials to create a print that's called lithography but because we're using kitchen materials we call it kitchen lithography you won't get the same detail as you would the traditional print making but it gives you a good idea of the process and i'm going to pull it off and there's the print now i want to show you one more thing before we end this video i tried this you see how it was kind of building up ink right here i am actually going to wipe my ink off where you can see the ghost image again and then i'm going to re-ink it you can kind of tell it's a combination of ink and water trying to get a balance of the two you have to keep the plate wet or you're going to get ink all over your image and it's going to disappear printmaking is trial and error so don't give up too soon if things don't work out right the first time making sure i don't get too much ink that was my problem last time it kind of takes layers of ink better put a little water on one more time and again remove any scumming around the prints that i don't want to print all right i think i'm going to stop there it gets to a point where it starts to build up ink even though i was trying to get the ink in different areas remember my motto perfection doesn't exist we're just learning a technique and a process then i try to pull off as much water as i can so i don't get my paper all wet again wipe my hands off before i pick up the paper grab a good piece of paper lay it in the middle and then this spoon acts as a barren it's a tool used to press the paper onto the ink working in a circular motion and the reason printmaking is such a neat thing is you can make more than one image with the same drawing giving it pretty good pressure not ripping the paper though and i'm holding the paper on the plate so it doesn't move taking a check and there it is thanks for watching i think we figured it out
