located between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia lies one of the world's greatest natural wonders the Bay of Fundy this body of water is home to the highest tides in the world with some areas Rising 16 meters or 52 feet we've experienced the Bay of fundy's beautiful Acadian Forest rugged Coastline and waterfalls but we have yet to see the dramatic tides in action So today we're going to change that we're at Hopewell rocks a park located right along the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick and over the next 18 hours we're going to see The Park at low tide high tide and even get out on the water [Music] thank you [Music] it costs 15.54 cents Canadian per person to visit Hopewell rocks but one great thing about the fee is that it's good for two consecutive days so you can see both high tide and low tide you can see whichever tide you want first and we decided to do low tide first [Music] during low tide you can walk on the ocean floor among some crazy rocks and the ocean floor is typically open three hours before and after low tide and we're here two hours before low tide there are stairs to take you down to the ocean floor which is about a 15 minute walk from the main parking area or you can utilize their shuttle service which is two dollars per person foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] thank you so these sea stacks are known as flower pot rocks and they stand 40 to 70 feet tall and have been formed over time through erosion from the tides and they are constantly changing with really large storms causing some of them to collapse in the most iconic rocks are right when you get down the staircase and that is where everyone hangs out but we highly recommend walking down the coastline a bit because we're in this super cool rock Nook and there's no one else here it is way better foreign [Music] so you may have noticed that the water is really Brown and there are actually a couple different areas along the Bay of Fundy that have really Brown water like this and this is because the tides flow over the muddy ground and they turn up sediments which never really have the chance to settle and it kind of makes you want a big tall glass of chocolate milk man it's been so long since I've had chocolate milk sounds so good [Music] wanted to see how deep this mud gets um [Music] like that hike in Alaska crap both of them now oh no all fun and games [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Laughter] we saw some people out there that were almost knee deep in mud so if we could barely handle that little amount we are not going any further [Music] thankfully they have a foot washing station foreign [Music] it is now officially low tide and we have six hours until high tide and over the next six hours 160 billion tons of water will flow into the bay we can't even fathom how much water that is but to give you an idea apparently it's enough to fill the Grand Canyon the reason that the Bay of Fundy has such greater Tides than anywhere else in the world is due to the Natural rocking motion of the water called sage plus the shape of the bay we read that the typical tidal range in open ocean is one meter or three feet and today the water level at Hopewell rocks is going from 5.6 feet to 39.7 feet which is absolutely crazy and some days the difference is even greater with the highest tidal differences coming during a full moon or a new moon [Music] one big perk of the van is that we can easily hang out in here for hours while we wait for the tide to rise so we're going to use this time to get some work done and make some dinner [Music] foreign it's almost high tide let's go check it out we're walking up to the viewpoint but we're covering our eyes because we don't want to see it yet all right three two one oh my gosh we were down there earlier walking around that is crazy [Music] that wasn't the first time that we've seen some extreme Tides but it was definitely the most impressive last summer in Alaska we got to see the boar tide and the turnagain arm which is the second largest tide in North America and what's super cool about that one is that people actually surf the wave When the tide rolls in but this was a completely different experience because you get such a better grasp at how much the water has risen when you compare it to the Rocks but we're not quite done experiencing the tides at Hopewell rocks tomorrow morning we're going to experience it on the water [Music] all right foreign [Music] this morning we're going kayaking on the Bay of Fundy at Hopewell rocks we booked a high tide tour with Baymont adventures and since the high tide is around 8 15 a.m We have a very early 6 15 a.m tour I don't know what we were thinking [Music] baby wow that is so cool it's a little choppy this morning [Music] thank you [Music] that is where we viewed high tide yesterday [Music] [Applause] [Music] The Rock we have here is really quite soft it's called conglomerate Sandstone it's like compressed uh sandstone and a bunch of other big rocks throughout it uh so yeah it's really quite crumbly so all these will just very slowly erode now this next one is actually the next flower pot to form now what makes a flower pot a flower pot put that flower pot Rock I should say is that it's a freestanding rock structure with green stuff on top of it right so it doesn't fit the bill of being freestanding hence it is not a flower pot once it does become its own flower pot that's when we get to name it and there are some fun names including a rock named Jay Leno [Music] this is definitely the most waves we have ever attacked on we're really squashing and rocking all around [Music] [Music] getting to kayak between all these rocks kind of reminds me of kayaking of the Apostle Islands it's just so fun to get this long and narrow kayak just squeezing between these tight faces [Music] foreign [Music] getting to see the high tide from the overlooks was super cool but it is a way cooler experience to be out here kayaking right where we're floating right now we were walking yesterday that is just mind-blowing to think about [Music] thank you [Music] thank you kayaking was amazing if you come to Hopewell rocks we highly recommend walking on the ocean floor and kayaking on the water you just get the best perspective of the tides doing both but not only can you experience these crazy tides in New Brunswick you also can in Nova Scotia so we're gonna pop down into Nova Scotia to experience the tides and what should be a very unique and thrilling way [Music] laughs foreign [Music]
