everyone knows entertainment is a fickle business and that's what makes Dolly Parton's endurance even more incredible she's been working 9:00 to 5:00 now for 53 years and with record sales of more than a hundred and sixty million she is the most successful country artist of all time helping her build an empire in excess of half a billion bucks dolly secret his ability to appeal to new generations of music fans who celebrate her unique sound and style and while she's more than happy to admit she puts a lot of effort into keeping up appearances I found out in Nashville Tennessee that her down-to-earth persona is not only enchanting it's entirely effortless [Music] Dolly Parton is famous for two things why there don't do not fancy I'm mistakable voice who's taking me to dinner after the show and her flirtatious personality there were you Tom it turns out both of those assets are still as strong as ever I've always been a flirt and I tease you to always love to kind of keep it you know I'm a very passionate person it's sexiness isn't as much about sort of how you own your persona and your swagger and you've still got an inspect I have young boy still pushing it at me I say I'm married but I need ed and I blind the dough pattern is quite simply an icon an unrivaled career in country music spanning 53 years [Applause] [Music] [Applause] collecting staggering forty-nine Grammy nominations with nine wins along the way or creating her own record label her own musical nine-to-five an opening road theme park Dollywood dolly incorporated it is just like a juggernaut you're the sixth richest singer in the world you've smashed the likes of Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift do you you worth half a billion dollars these days well that's what I hear but I count my blessings more than I count my money let's put it that way I know the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away but I'm very grateful that I've been blessed you're very much on a roll what about dolly for president ah ah can you imagine anything worse than being the head of a country I think we've had enough boobs in the White House Dolly's humility is easy to trace back to what were very humble beginnings growing up as one of twelve children all living in a one-room log cabin in East Tennessee it's where that thick skin and thick accent of hers came from I was never ashamed of my upbringing in fact I'm very proud of all that we were very poor but we were rich as my mama said in the things that matter liking kindness and love and understanding so it just depends on what you call wealth and success what is being one of twelve children teach you what does it do what does it teach you what I'm so used to your accent what did you try an Americanized voice why does it teach you Oh what does it teach me I'm sorry yeah I just I'm not hard of hearing I'm just hard listening Dolly's charm is infectious and she was always going to be destined for bigger things [Music] and so she set out for the home of country music Nashville with a heart set on a music career but it turns out two passions flourished when she arrived one in the recording studio and the other starting at a laundromat it's not often that someone can say their life changed forever at a place called the wishy washy washy Tyria well you know when I first got to Nashville back in 1964 I just graduated from high school I left two boyfriends at home had no intentions of finding a boyfriend I just want to work on my music I didn't want no boys know me or anybody sidetracking me so what do I do very first day we've been married for 53 years lovely 54 this coming May and we get along great and we've just had a really good marriage he's independent so am I he likes staying home I like staying going kaldane is famously reclusive but they do say of course that opposites attracting and doughy certainly is a contrast to her husband she has never shied away from being the center of attention and he's more than happy to own the fact she's somewhat obsessed with keeping up appearances you're looking very youthful well what's the secret well thank you for that I always say good lighting good makeup and good doctors you touched on the doctors there in your book in 1994 you said I've had nips and tucks and trims and sucks boobs and waists and but and such eyes and chin and back again pills and pills and other fields and I'll never graduate from college pretty much now that's what I do now I've had about all the nips and tucks I can have with that kind of just I don't know plastic dog but the good part with me though I have my own look I'm kind of cartoonish and cartoons don't really age that much you know even when I'm 90 I'll still probably look about the same way just a little thicker makeup bigger hair dollies unique looks have long been a source of fascination I'm actually not as big as people think cuz I'm a tiny little person in this interview on 60 minutes back in 1996 she famously told Mike Monroe where to go when he asked it question you'd never get away with these days you've always been very protective about your measurements of your striking figure may I ask [Music] Joey once said I've got a brain beneath the wigs and a heart beneath the boobs and that's very clear when you realize she's written more than 5,000 songs during her decorated career [Music] testament to her work is that generations of musicians have embraced it [Music] [Applause] the 90s saw Whitney Houston reinvent this classic but even nowadays her songs are still regulus on the radio [Music] [Applause] [Music] Joline but that's one of my favorite karaoke songs cuz you've only got to remember one word people love Jolene that you know I have had more cuts on that song more people have recorded that worldwide through the years that any song far more than I will always love you everybody loves to sing Jolene because it is like you say it's just Jolene Jolene Jolene Jolene you know how to work to are that's one that I'm really proud of it's just one of those songs just gonna live forever because it's so easy to sing and it's just got its own little sound this tribute at last year's Grammy Awards showed just how loved dolly is today [Applause] falling alongside her goddaughter Marla Sarris Stoli was named the music industry's Person of the Year [Music] of course singing is important to her but she wants to be known as much if not more for her writing and creativity you've got a pretty unique instrument dolly I do and when I wrote nine to five I used it because the whole story was about women with their typewriters and everything and I realized it with my [Music] this was my real instrument and when I recorded 95 actually played my nails as percussion Joey wrote that song is the theme for the 1980 blockbuster 9:00 to 5:00 Hollywood's first unashamedly feminist film hold it right there turn around a second for decades on the lyrics and this story which tackle the issue of workplace equality remain as relevant as ever ever say another word about me or make another Indecent Proposal I'm gonna get that gun of mine and I'm gonna change you from a rooster to a hand with one shot that signature song long hailed as the universal anthem for working women I can relate to all the things that women go through growing up in the business early on as a young girl having to put up with you know with all that but I was not afraid of me and I knew how to stand my ground do you call yourself a feminist well if being feminine is feminist I guess I am actually I don't know I don't like labels I always say I look like a woman I think like a man and I mean that I can think like a man and back then oh we were just secretaries in a man's world the movie was so popular 9 to 5 was reimagined for Broadway 11 years ago hey there Perth well don't you look fancy now the musical sensation is set to hit Australian shores for the first time next month no one is more excited than Dolly herself you better be there time after so like that dolly she's hoping the show's tour is slightly less eventful than her last visit to Australia when customs officials held her two gigantic tour buses at the border claiming they didn't meet Road regulations when you were last in Australia am i right in saying that two of your big prized assets well they were deemed too big for entry yeah I know what you talking about yeah we had when we did have some some kind of problem had to go to the the governor commissioner or whatever the Prime Minister Prime Minister that's what it to get some permission to use the bus I think he was very kind to us with that signature charm and unique voice it's so easy to see why fans will always love Dolly Parton a gentleman never asks a woman her age so perhaps I might ask what's the retirement age I just turned 74 and I plan to be on the cover of Playboy magazine again see I did playboy magazine years ago I thought it would be such a hoot if they'll go for it I don't know if there will if I could be on the cover you know again when I'm 75 have you gonna whip out that same outfit boobs are still soon Oh
