EVOLVER:62 Beatles and cakes in the village hall

this letter from brian epstein confirms the beatles will be playing a show in the village hall in irby in september 1962 on the 7th irby was a kind of nice rural village over the other side of the river mersey and the agreed phase 35 pounds which was pretty standard at that time for the beatles it so happens that we've got a set list for it it's paul mccartney's neat script of the songs that they played at the urbi village hall that night a few things to point out about six songs from the end they do forgot to remember for mal this is mal evans who would of course go on to work with them but at that time was a beatles fan who went to see them whenever he could not yet working for them and they would always play an elvis song for mel because mal was a big elvis fan note the fourth song down love me do and the eighth song down how do you do also known as how do you do it that and love me do we're going to be a side b side of the beatles first record now they really didn't want how do you do it to be their first a side but it looked almost certain that it was going to happen which is why they're playing it because they're promoting this is going to be our new record one of the very few occasions when they played how do you do or how do you do it on stage as history tells us a few days later they got the good news that it wasn't going to be their first record after all and that they would have to record another song and love me do would become the a side of their first record instead now whose songs were they well richie barrett doing some other guy a great way to open the show three songs from chuck berry little richard um who else have we got there arthur alexander doing shot rhythm and blues there at the end elvis presley of course very much a kind of american set that they're doing and in particular a kind of soul music set the beatles never said really but they were at this time playing a lot of soul covers and if you saw them play as you noticed from the vocalist depicted down the left you would see a kind of regular routine of george paul john george paul john george paul john and so on so if you saw the beatles play in 1962 you would see george harrison sing as many songs as john and paul the other thing about irby was that the organizers couldn't quite get the 35 pounds together that they had agreed to pay brian epstein for the beatles services so a couple of days after the event where it had happened in the village hall there in irby there was a cake sale and i find it rather poetic and beautiful that a cake sale was held in this english village hall to pay for the beatles having played there
