[Music] hello there human male sean here and welcome back to another long youtube video about video games specifically marvel ps1 games and today we are going to review every single one of them in order of release and then rank them all from worst to best a few months back i did a video covering every dc comics game released on the playstation and that was a fun four games i'm lying it wasn't but during that video i also said that i had plans to cover every marvel comics game released on the ps1 and after sitting on 200 gigabytes worth of video footage for the past six months i figured well now's probably the time to do that so here we are similarly to dc marvel sure liked releasing video games based around their properties although i think at least during the 80s and early 90s dc games probably eclipsed marvel games in terms of overall quality although there were some definite highlights throughout the years and also silver surfer for nes that that came out too but today we are going to narrow down the scope and take a look at every marvel game released on sony's little grey box that could so by the end of the video we should be able to determine what is the very best marvel game released on the playstation as well as everything in between now as i mentioned earlier dc comics had a grand total of four games released on the playstation and not a looker in the bunch so take a guess how many marvel games do you think got released on the playstation during its lifespan if you said the number 13 congratulations you've been cursed with bad luck for life but you are also correct so i don't know maybe it balances out we're going to get into the games in just a moment but first i'd like to cover just a few quick disclaimers an emulator was used to capture all game footage so if you see any weird visual errors please be aware that may be the reason why for consistency all games shown today will be the north american versions while the end goal here is to offer a critical review and ranking of each game this video is mostly just for fun so if i'm not a fan of a game you enjoy or likewise i enjoy a game that you hate just remember it's only somebody's opinion on the internet so don't take it too seriously we're all just here for a good time at the end of the day and lastly i appreciate the video is quite long so if there is a particular review you'd like to watch or just want to skip ahead to the ranking the timestamps for each are listed below so feel free to skip ahead if you like don't worry you won't hurt my feelings and with that out of the way true believers it is time for a review of every marvel game released on the ps1 in order of release i hope you like the spider-man theme [Music] [Music] the first marvel game released on the playstation is iron man xo manowar and heavy metal which was developed by real-time associates and published by acclaim in 1996. this game is a crossover between marvel's iron man and valiant comics exo manowar i read a few exo comics over the years and they've always been really good he's a character that could really use a bit more mainstream attention in my opinion the main thing you need to know about this game though is that iron man has a big heavy metal battle suit and exo manowar also has a big heavy metal battle suit and when you get two heavy metal suit boys together you get iron man and xo man of war in heavy metal this game is a one or two player run and gun made exclusively for home systems gameplay is pretty typical of the genre you'll run through level after level shooting everything that moves dodging enemy fire and fighting the odd boss from time to time you have the choice of playing as either iron man or xo manowar but outside of a few minor ability differences each character plays pretty much the same so it will be a similar experience regardless of who you play since this is a marvel episode i did opt to play as iron man rather than exo but before we leave him behind i would like to highlight exo's silly flight animation i feel like this is what it'd end up looking like if i could fly as far as the gameplay goes you have access to an energy shot that can be aimed in multiple directions this weapon can be upgraded up to four times by collecting the appropriate power up but you do lose a power point upon death if you double tap the direction pad up or down you can fire directly into the screen or perform a double side shot and you can also perform a stronger unibeam attack that uses up a weapon charge upon each use there's also some basic punch and kick attacks but these aren't really used much over your basic projectile attacks unless it's needed for a particular enemy or a boss you can of course jump and also fly as well for a short time flying drains the energy meter below your health bar but charges back up automatically when not in use it's a pretty stereotypical run-and-gun at the end of the day and when i first started playing it i was actually having a pretty good time with it you're just blasting aliens with iron man what's not to love well quite a bit as it turns out because the further you get into the game the more our old friend mediocrity begins to sink in controlling iron man can be a bit of a pain the character's movements feel sluggish and heavy and i mean he isn't a big suit of armor i get it but it's not really good for a game of this type your default speed is walking and you can double tap a direction to start running but all the inputs just feel like they have a slight delay before they execute on screen it's not exactly a deal breaker but in a game where you want to avoid getting shot it's going to lead to you getting shot a whole lot and even though you will die pretty frequently the game does at least give you a generous pool of lawyers and continues to make your way through the game although this is one of those games that strips you of your power-ups when you die and while this game can be pretty fun when you're stomping two levels as a max power iron man with his triple shots and homing attack when you're stuck dying as a weak level one iron man struggling to make your way throughout the levels a lot of the phone gets replaced with frustration instead and once again thanks to the sluggish controls causing unnecessary debts well you're probably going to end up on lower power most of the game it also doesn't really help that the game is pretty ugly too like even by 1996 standards this looks pretty bad it looks like a hybrid mess of a late 16-bit game and early 32-bit game stuck together with bad 2d and treaty art throughout there can be some nice variety to the locations with jungles volcanoes and cities to fight but i'd be lying if i said any of them actually looked any good the enemies and bosses don't look the best but there is some good variety to them at least most of the bosses have pretty simple patterns to follow but they can take ages to whittle down if you don't have your weapon powered properly they can also stun you into corners which can be a bit of a nightmare to deal with considering the delayed character controls as well on the sound front i actually like some of the tunes that the game has it's full of heavy metal tracks with some good riffs that complement the action on screen the problem is that the quality of the instruments the recording the sound levels everything is done atrociously in this game any hint of a good composition here is just buried with the lowest budget sounding mixing a claim could afford it's it's woeful [Music] to be honest my favorite thing about this game is the brief horizontal shooter stage where you're flying throughout the jungle with iron man i mean this looks kind of trash but i would definitely play a whole game of this easily you get to fight an attack helicopter iron man doesn't have any frames of animation this is great a plus so look this isn't a running gun you'll be looking to hunt down for your collection anytime soon it's not a particularly great ironman game or an exo man of war game it's ugly and it sounds pretty terrible but if you ever came across this game and weren't looking for some dumb co-op fun you probably end up having a pretty good time playing this all the time hell i knew it was pretty mediocre but the game kept me wanting to play level after level so maybe it's a little better than i give it credit for not a good game but you could certainly do a lot worse [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] have you ever just played a game and no one in the first 20 seconds that you're gonna hate it the incredible hulk the pantheon saga was first released in europe in 1996 and then later in other regions in 1997 this game was published by idols and developed by a studio called attention to detail now at the time attention to detail had recently moved from developing games on the ill-fated atari jaguar after developing one of the console's most popular series cybermorph and its follow-up battlemorph attention and detail would later go on to develop the popular rollcage series of games on the ps1 so we at least know that the studio is capable of turning out some quality titles in between that though we have the incredible hulk the pantheon saga a great example of how not to make a hulk game or any game at all really for that matter the pantheon saga is an isometric action platformer plenty of early 32-bit games adopted this style of gameplay and very few of them hold up well today although hulk doesn't really have to worry about holding up well today though because anybody who played this back when it first came out would have known this was awful even then so the hulk we know we love him big green guy very strong very angry like smashing things also has gamma powers nice guy well they put him in a slow moving game full of switch puzzles and lots of platforming platforming with terrible terrible player movement really the main issue is that nothing in this game makes you feel like you're playing as the hulk the game doesn't feel like it was made for the character it's like i bought a hulk game and i'm placing boxes on switches i don't get it like i want to smash bad guys and break down walls but you're throwing out tiny ineffective kick and punch combos instead hulk does at least have a few gamma powered specials that he can use but most of them are really difficult to hit enemies with outside of the spinning lariat which thankfully at least gives us one op move we can use to breeze through most of the combat sections the levels you explore can run the gambit from pretty long to really really short each new location usually has two or three levels including a boss level before you can move on to a new locale the locations lack any real visual flair or variety each of the areas have their own little gimmicks but the gameplay is just so bland throughout it's really a struggle to keep moving on the opening level is a great example of this you start as the hulk after just escaping capture on a ship so you need to find six elevator switches to get you out of this level now the level itself isn't that big but navigation around it is just such a chore there's traps all across the level and trying to get around them using hulk's weird momentum based movement is just the worst it doesn't help that getting hit by anything stuns you briefly so it's easy to get stun locked in traps as well you can take damage pretty quickly in this game but thankfully hulk's health does automatically regenerate if you don't mind standing around in a safe space and waiting for a little bit you will come across plenty of enemies at most stages now in the game fighting enemies on the ground is a little awkward but it is fine for the most part but this first level has tons of flying enemies too and trying to fight these things it's just one of the most frustrating experiences i've ever had playing a game it's just easier to run away from them whenever you can so you kind of just fumble about this level getting hit by everything getting to grips with the controls hitting switches you know hulk stuff there are items to find but there's nothing unusual just health gamma energy for your specials double damage etc so when you do finally get out of this level you can then move on to the next visually identical level where you get to fight tree bosses which as you can imagine isn't exactly a good thing thanks to the game's combat only here the level decides to now add platforming into the mix and look you've got to believe me when i tell you this here is absolute dog once again hulk's movement operates on momentum which is a bit awkward he also has three different kinds of jumps depending on how you input the command when you jump and this basically means every jump i make it's a hail mary who the knows where i'm gonna land and the worst part is that you don't even have to make these jumps i struggled through this platforming section for so long and it turns out you can just tank the damage from the liquid below and you know what i'm not even mad i got to skip the section this this is good this is a good thing so you make your way through the level you defeat the two bosses and then at the very end you have to fight a flying boss and this is where i was just about to give up on the game the hulk just struggles to reach the boss as he gets battered with arrows i ended up having to make do with these tiny little jump kicks and i mean they work but look at this it's just it's just so sad even though i wasn't having a very good time at this point i was at least curious to see how the game progressed so i kept playing and look every single problem in the first area is present in the new areas only now they're even worse more out of place puzzle sections tons of janky boss battles and jays is the platforming sections they get harder and more frustrating every level and eventually they're like you know what this game needs ice physics and tons of platforming sections with said ice physics on top of hulk's already insane jump physics it's a great idea game some of these platforming sections are genuinely some of the greatest accomplishments i've ever completed in a video game like i have no idea how i made some of these jumps but in spite of it all every time i made it through these sections the game just kept getting worse and worse and worse i finally gave up at the bit where the hulk drives an iceberg around the maze which is not as great as it sounds believe me i can't say for certain if this is the worst hulk game ever made but it is easily near the top of the pile is this the worst marvel game on the console however well that remains to be seen either way you should steer well clear of the pantheon saga a boring mess of a game that just happens to have the hulk trapped in it for some reason if you've any doubt just try it yourself for about 20 seconds someday believe me you'll know what i mean [Music] [Music] [Music] mr fantastic [Music] [Applause] next up we have the fantastic four released on the playstation in 1997. acclaim are back on publishing duties and on development we have probe entertainment software this game to my knowledge is actually the first fantastic four game ever released unlike most fantastic four games that would follow it it's a four player beat em up and as far as beat em ups go this is certainly one of them it's your standard arcade style side scrolling game the characters and sprites behave like it's a 2d game but the environments are fully 3d so while the game will feel familiar if you played any other titles in the genre the level design does allow for a bit more openness and depth across the game some areas even let you full 3d movement while the camera rotates around it's kind of weird but it works well enough as for the character roster you do get to play as all members of the fantastic four as expected but she-hulk is also here as a nice little bonus perk this is a four player game but there are a few different options depending on how you want to play you can of course play this game solo which works fine most of the time but even whatever juice enemy count some of this game's bosses and mechanics are clearly suited to having four players so you will run into some pretty poorly balanced areas before long and it kind of makes single player an overly frustrating experience to play through you can of course try solo but this is definitely not the recommended way to play this game from my experience thankfully the game does allow you to play with up to three ai control partners called drones who are pretty competent most of the time and practically suicidal the rest of the time there's still no comparison to playing with four human players but the drones do at least make the game somewhat beatable compared to struggling alone on the gameplay front this is a very simple beat em up with a few cool gimmicks and also some really annoying acclaim jank that just makes the game more difficult than it needs to be each character has a basic combo string that's executed by pressing square or triangle a few times and to the game's credit the combos feel nice to execute and you can even get some juggle combos off on airborne enemies each character also has two airborne attacks with the square and triangle button as well so as far as bread and butter attack options go this game is simple but satisfying enough to keep you engaged outside of that your character can also block grab and also knock enemies into the background or foreground which only really seems to be useful for damaging certain bosses of course you can't have a superhero game without powers and each character has four at their disposal three standard special attacks which can be executed at any time and one super special attack which drains 50 of your special meter on use these powers are really useful and will probably be your main attack options throughout the game considering how strong they are it's a shame then that one of the game's biggest issues is how unnecessarily complicated it is to perform very simple actions this game opts for a moral combat style input system for your special moves and even simple things like picking up an object for example if you wanted to pick up a car any other brawler would just use a single button command to do this but here you've got to stop and tap up and down on the d-pad to lift it which just feels really unnatural to do and special moves are even worse you've got to stand still and hold down the or 2 button and then input a command to activate your special now every character has their own unique commands for their 4 special moves and it's one of those games that i hope you have your manual ready for if you want to figure them out for your character of choice now some of these commands aren't too bad human torch for example activates an aoe by holding down or two and tapping down down on the d-pad and his fire rain is activated by tapping up up both are very easy to execute but for his two other moves one of which is a very useful fireball projectile it requires you to press up forward and then down and not in a half circle motion it needs to be tapped in each direction and it just feels really awful to execute for such a useful ability there's also this kind of useless dive attack that requires you to press left right down and up which is even worse again stopping in the middle of fights and trying to input these awkward commands with all this hectic going on around you it just does not work well at all modern game design would just have you hold the or 2 button and then tap any of the phase buttons to execute the moves which would make this a much better game but games in this era used to love implementing complicated tap commands to execute simple moves and look this just dates the game terribly it's something you will obviously get used to but for how important these moves are the system just holds the game's already very simple combat back and it also makes it kind of impossible to just pick up and play without reading the manual beforehand either way i'd be lying if i didn't say that the game had a kind of rough charm to it though combat when it all clicks can actually be pretty fun there's only five levels in the game but they are pretty long and there is a lot of visual and enemy variety as you play through them the actual locations themselves look pretty rough but the character and enemy models have this really weird style with tons of individual movements on their limbs i can't say for sure if this looks good or not but i kind of like it some of the animations for the characters mr fantastic especially look great even when they're doing basic things like blocking or dashing the enemies also look ridiculous as well like i mean look at this buff whale that can one hit you no joke this guy took about eight of my continues away in about 60 seconds truly the buffest boy both in and out of the ocean now unfortunately as the game goes on the difficulty kind of ramps up to levels this is when your ai partners stop being a help and kind of just serve as an efficient vessel for draining away your limited continues so even if you're having a good time with this game eventually if you're playing by yourself or with the ai the cheap enemies are just gonna smash your entire team and with no saves no passwords or infinite continues this game will be a struggle to get you on your own although nothing will compare though to the bonus levels that you sometimes get in between stages where you get to fight either dragon man iceman or the hulk and believe me these lads will absolutely bait destroy out of you i've managed to beat hulk once by cheesing him but every other fight was me getting mashed almost immediately it's kind of funny how brutal it is one final thing i have to mention about fantastic four is the game's really strange soundtrack every level in the game kind of has funky jazzy background music that feels so out of place but it's kind of low-key amazing at the same time [Music] like this is what i'll remember about the game the unnecessary amount of saxophone and how janky everything looks i kind of love it i really wish the controllers and game balance were tuned a little bit better because i do actually think he could have a really good time playing through this with four friends who are at least willing to put up with a little bit of jank but as it stands this ends up being just another mediocre superhero beat em up on the playstation even if it does have a top-tier jazz soundtrack [Music] just like [Music] [Music] marvel super heroes starting off a string of capcom fighters we have marvel superheroes this game was originally released in arcades in 1995 and found its way over to the playstation in 1997 with the port being published and developed by capcom internally even though this is the first marvel fighter released on the playstation this is actually the second game in the series chronologically for some reason the first game made its way to playstation after this one but we'll get into that when the time comes so marvel superheroes is a fast-paced flashy mid-90s 1v1 2d fighter courtesy of the kings at capcom after the huge success that was street fighter 2 capcom continued to flex their knuckles by releasing tons of amazing 2d fighters in the space of just a few years as arcade hardware improved so did their games and at this point the games capcom were pumping out looked spectacular full of bright colors with fluid sprite work and animations they still look great today and of course we were lucky enough that capcom partnered up with marvel to bring some of their iconic characters and storylines into fighting game form because these here are some of the best fighters and comic book games ever made but how did they hold up on the playstation well let's start by taking a look at marvel superheroes just as a heads up it's probably worth noting that i'm not the most technically proficient fighting game player out there so while i've played a ton of different fighting games over the years the normal way around most of the standard fighting game commands and terminology are nowhere near serious enough a player to get into the deeper aspects of the games you know frame data combo strings infinity counters etc there is always a ton of technical depth in here for players to study over if they wish but for me i'll be mostly looking at how enjoyable the fighting games are from a casual perspective this particular game is based on the infinity war storyline so you're at least likely to be clued in on what's going on and appreciate some of the loose story content on display here the game features a roster of 10 playable characters of course you've got captain america spider-man iron man the hulk four x-men characters which seems like a high amount but you'll understand why there's so many later and some lesser-known cults like black heart and schuma goron the game also includes two boss characters who fight towards the end of the arcade mode doctor doom and of course thanos who are both incredibly difficult to take down but great fun to fight this game is a 1v1 fighter unlike many of capcom's later crossover games which feature tag battles over the traditional 1v1 style so if you're familiar with capcom fighters of the time like dark stalkers street fighter alpha hell even just regular old street fighter 2 you should be able to pick this game up fairly easy each character has a unique set of special moves and supers which look great and of course give the characters their own strengths and play styles combos are generally a bit easier to pull off in this game compared to something like street fighter this game allows you to easily perform air combos by launching players high into the air and if you wanted to put in the time to practice a character you could be pulling off insane high flying combos in no time one of the features exclusive to this game is the infinity gem system players can collect one of six different types of infinity gem in battle which can be activated mid fight to boost your character in some way for example power will increase your attack time increases your speed soul grants you help regen and each of the character has a preferred gem as well which gives them a little extra bonus like the power gem with spider-man which doesn't just increase his attacks but gives him a clone as well to really amp up the damage of course you can stock up on gems mid-fight for important moments but your opponent can also take the gems from you by hitting you with a special attack and then taking the gem while it's out on the field i actually really like this gem system but adds a nice bit of strategy without feeling like it hurts the game's balance in any meaningful way the fighting here is just so satisfying and fluid it really strikes the sweep point between the older capcom fighters and the insanity of capcom's later games there's really very little to complain about here regarding the gameplay itself it's just it's fantastic thankfully the presentation here is also off the charts for the time the amount of detail put into the backgrounds and character sprites just looks so good capcom games will only look better and better over time but for a game released in 1995 and then ported over to the ps1 in 1997 this still looks fantastic even today i especially love the way the characters just jump off the tvs right before the fight and then pose in front of this flashy background oh it's so good it should also go without saying but capcom as always kills it on the sound from whether it's the sound effects and voices or pretty much every single song on the soundtrack if you like good video game music you will not be disappointed here [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] so look i think the game itself is great that's pretty clear to see but probably the most important thing regarding the ps1 versions of these fighters is the quality of the port itself you see while we were edging ever closer the arcade perfect versions of fighting games the home console ports of these games usually featured a number of cutbacks so they could run well on the inferior playstation hardware the rule of thumb generally is that the sega saturn versions of all of these capcom fighters while still inferior to the arcade versions did perform much better on sega's hardware compared to their playstation counterparts because while the playstation was a competent 3d machine easily eclipsing the saturn the saturn's strength was that it was a 2d powerhouse so generally speaking if you like these kind of games the arcade or certain versions will always be preferable to the playstation games for a variety of reasons the good news is that the playstation port of marvel superheroes is one of the good ones capcom looked after this one themselves now the characters and backgrounds do have less frames of animation compared to the arcade and certain versions which is unfortunate there's also a few stage effects missing and longer load times overall but thankfully the gameplay here is pretty much rock solid there is some minor slowdown during gameplay which usually would be a big issue but thankfully it only ever really happened during special attack animations so it's nothing that will really interrupt the flow of gameplay modes are pretty limited with just an arcade and versus mode on offer but this was the expected number of modes for an arcade port at the time overall the menus and options look clean and polished up for the console edition so in this case even though the playstation port is still inferior to the arcade and saturn counterparts this is still a great version of the game and definitely one worth grabbing for the system overall marvel superheroes is a great 2d fighter and a fantastic start the capcom string of marvel releases on the console it looks great it plays great and it offers a nice combination of old and new capcom gameplay to satisfy comic book and fighting game fans alike here's hoping the rest of capcom's games on this list can match or even exceed the quality on display here with marvel superheroes [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] just like [Music] up next we have x-men children of the atom which is the first of capcom's marvel fighters the original arcade version was first released in japanese arcades at the end of 1994. interestingly the first home port of this game released in 1995 but it was exclusive to the sega saturn for a little while and when capcom eventually attempted to bring it over to the playstation they found that they had some difficulty trying to convert it over to the ps1 hardware so guess who they ended up contracting to do the port none other than our fantastic friends over at probe entertainment software and guess what they had some difficulty porting the game over too so even though this is the first game in capcom's marvel fighting series x-men children of the atom ended up coming out on the playstation after its follow-up marvel superheroes due to numerous development issues can't really say that happens too often so how is capcom's first marvel fighter well it's still a capcom fighter released in the mid 90s so you know it's it's amazing it's great this here is another one-on-one fighter with a roster of 11 playable characters and two boss characters to fight against only this time it's entirely x-men focused and if you're a fan of the 90s tv show you'll be pretty happy with the roster here the voice cast from the series even provides the character voices in-game unsurprisingly the roster includes characters like wolverine storm and cycops but characters like spiral silver samurai and omega red are great choices for antagonists too the game even allows you to play as a massive sentinel who towers above the other characters and hits like an 18-wheeler truck the two boss characters in this game are juggernaut and magneto who once again you'll come up against towards the end of arcade mode you may have noticed that four of this game's characters also appeared in the roster for marvel superheroes and i suppose this does make sense since they put a lot of effort to make these guys so you might as well transfer them over to another game the four characters chosen were wolverine psylocke juggernaut and magneto now wolverine and psylocke were apparently this game's most popular characters and juvenile and magneto weren't actually playable in children of the atom so they might as well have been considered new characters for when they were eventually added to marvel superheroes once again the character sprites and animations all look fantastic all up to the standard of capcom's other fighting game output during the era now this game doesn't look as good as marvel superheroes but that is to be expected seeing as this game came out in arcades nearly a year earlier in 1994 but regardless for a playstation game this all still looks really good of course we've no infinity gem system here but newly added to this game was the ability to knock enemies into different parts of certain stages it's always fun smashing enemies into the ground and watching it shatter from the impact you'll love to see it this was also the first game to really introduce the high flying combos into the series so a lot of the gameplay here is very similar to marvel superheroes but that game is mostly building off of the groundwork that was set here in this game so if you're into the gameplay in marvel superheroes well it's safe to say that you really enjoy this one as well that being said though i did notice the difficulty in this game was tuned way higher compared to marvel superheroes now i'm not sure if this is to do with the fact that this game was ported by probe instead of capcom but even on the lowest difficulty the ai in this game is especially unforgiving now if you do manage to make it to a boss they will genuinely make your life a living hell it's rough so if you're a newcomer you might find this game a bit tougher to get into compared to marvel superheroes unfortunately so do keep that in mind if you're gonna try this one out now once again the music here is really good i wouldn't say it's quite as catchy or memorable as marvel superheroes but it's still capcom so it's a cut above most other fighters on the system either way [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you might remember me saying earlier that there were 11 playable characters in this game but there are only 10 here on the character select screen well that's because there is a secret character and if you input a weird obtuse code at the character select screen you can also play zakuma which is a nice touch playing as akuma didn't stop me getting demolished by the aoi but if you're looking to play as a character with a more traditional street fighter moveset his inclusion here is a welcome one so as far as our first entry in capcom's marvel fighters this is a pretty great game probably the most traditional of the lot but that's not necessarily a bad thing unfortunately though as mentioned earlier for whatever reason this game was a nightmare to port over to the playstation and this particular port of the game is one of the worst of all the games that we'll be looking at today once again we have the expected loss of animation frames background sprites and certain visual effects compared to its arcade counterpart but on top of this we have some much bigger problems too this port features a ton of slowdown and frame drops all throughout the game and look i'm not the biggest framerate guy in the world i mean look at me i play trash daily and i enjoy it but fighting games are the single worst types of games that have frame rate issues with because it completely messes up the timing of inputs and commands this won't be a deal breaker for casual fans but if you're trying to play this game competitively it makes this version practically unplayable it's by far at its worst when the big characters are on screen so if you're fighting with either sentinel or juggernaut you're gonna have a bad time it's really quite unfortunate because it's a huge black mark on the game and it makes it pretty hard to recommend when there's just much better ports available out there honestly this whole port just feels kind of low budget and taped together in some aspects the game's menu is incredibly bare bones and look as mentioned before it's not unusual for fighting games of the time to feature just arcade and versus modes but even the game's option menu resembles something closer to an arcade dip switch menu rather than a normal polished console game menu it just looks and feels kind of off to me even the game's opening intro is poorly done normally the game itself would run the intro but this version here is actually just playing a low res video file of the arcade versions opening and the frame rate of this thing is terrible too it's just it's just a really odd inclusion the game also features some pretty long loading times compared to other versions as well this whole port just feels pretty messy i just get the feeling that this was pushed out the door as soon as possible because capcom already had another what four or five newer fancier fighting games out at the time so who was really even gonna buy a now a day fighter from 1994 over the newer ones available in 1998. i've no doubt that this game was probably a struggle to port over with the time that they had but it's still a pretty poor effort from probe i'm afraid look at the end of the day what we have here is a bad port of a great fighting game it's definitely worth tracking down and playing if you're an x-men fan and want to play one of capcom's more straightforward 1v1 marvel fighters but if you do just opt for the saturn or arcade version if you can because unfortunately the playstation version just has too many big issues to be really worth your time [Music] the human error is over the mutant era has come [Music] round one [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] x-men versus street fighter okay now we're back to the regular chronological order of releases so here's x-men vs street fighter the third game in the capcom crossover fighting series first released in arcades in 1996 before making its way up to the playstation in 1998 with capcom once again handling the publishing and porting duties themselves look i think it's fair to say at this stage all of these fighting games are very good there's not really much need to go into detail about all the general mechanics since the games here are all very similar to one another but with a couple of new features added each time this here is capcom's first versus game and that comes with one of the biggest changes to the gameplay so far with the inclusion of tag battles in this game you choose two fighters to take in the battle and you then have the option of swapping them in and out mid battle you can team up for supers use your second character to help you get out of counters it was a big shake up for the series and even though the gameplay here is more or less the same as the previous two games the tag battles added a whole new level of strategy in depth which is always great to see character wise we've once again narrowed down the marvel side to just x-men characters but this time we've got a selection of street fighter characters to choose from as well there's 16 characters overall with akuma once again selectable as a bonus a lot of x-men characters do make their return in this game alongside some newcomers like gambit rogue and saber 2. overall the character selection here is great once again and should keep fans of either series happy this game only features one boss character apocalypse but the scale of the fight has been dialed up big time with apocalypse taking up most of the game screen this fight feels very different than anything that came before it almost like a mixture of a boss and a bonus stage at the same time it's pretty fun as long as you've got some handy rain supers to take him out from a distance that is so once again we've got another phone call gunfighter but once again we've got to talk about the quality of the ps1 port and this one is easily the worst yet seemingly the ps1 had such a hard time handling the tag battles that the feature was completely scrapped from this version of the game so what we have here is x-men vs street fighter a game where the entire selling point was the new tag battles and they've just been dropped completely you can still select an additional character and use them during super moves and counters but switching to them during battle not a chance this here is once again a 1v1 fighter even the intro cutscene is trying to hype you up for tag battles and they're not even in the game and what's worse about this is that the actual arcade game took a hit visually with the backgrounds and animations to make sure that it ran smoothly with the extra characters on screen all these cutbacks also made their way over to the ps1 version of the game as well but now they're even worse and you don't even get the tag battles the usual issues we would come to expect are present here longer load times than other versions backgrounds the characters have again taken huge hits to their animations and this game sees the most severe cults yet to the point where the game just looks and feels choppy while playing it out of the three capcom fighters we've looked at so far this one genuinely looks the worst of the bunch the game does run smoothly most of the time but there's still some frame drops during some of the heavier attack animations i don't know this one just ended up feeling the worst to play out of all of them between the choppy animations dull backgrounds and occasional slow down it's hard to enjoy this one when you've already played two better games before not to mention the fact that it's missing the entire new gimmick and selling point of the game even the soundtrack feels like a big step down from the previous two games i mean there's still some great tunes here but everything just seems worse than what came before it [Music] at least they added a training and survival mode into it this time that's something i guess it's really weird to see such a steady decline in quality over time but it does give you some insight into how limited the playstation could be with 2d compared to the saturn which thanks to its ability to use expanded ram carts allowed this version of the game to be near arcade perfect on the console so look at the end of the day this is still a good fighting game and maybe a 1v1 version of the game may sound appealing to you if you're sick of capcom's tag battlers but looking at the game as a port of the arcade original this has to be one of the worst efforts capcom ever put in it's just so strange to see them release such a heavily compromised version of the game but hey you know one is a hell of a drug you do you there's pretty much no reason to pick up this version of the game today when it's so easy to play the arcade or saturn version nowadays this here is just another disappointing part of an excellent game and as things are going currently capcom's efforts are getting worse before they're getting better and with more games around the corner well we can only hope they start picking up from here [Music] yes [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] are you ready true believers capcom and marvel have joined forces once again to bring you marvel superheroes versus three fighters don't miss out on the enjoyment of a lifetime don't miss the most amazing fighting game ever are you ready for a new challenger marvel super heroes versus three fighter the fourth game in copcom's marvel crossover series is marvel's superheroes versus street footer this game was first released in the arcades in 1997 and then once again ported to the playstation by capcom in the year 1999. this particular game is probably the least exciting of the bunch we've seen so far at least in terms of content pretty much all the content in this game has been recycled from other games all the backgrounds are just palette swaps from x-men versus street fighter all the marvel characters have been taken from marvel superheroes and while there are some new street fighter additions to the game there's zero brand new playable characters created just for this game so it basically feels like x-men vs street fighter just with a slightly changed roster and a few updates here and there the arcade version is once again a tag team fighter but the big new addition to this game is that you can call out your tag partner in any time to do an assist move rather than just during super moves and counters this feature would be a mainstay in later games but here it feels like a pretty minor update compared to what was added into the previous games the boss fight in this game is once again apocalypse which is kind of disappointing he also seems much easier to beat this time compared to x-men vs street fighter thankfully they did add on an extra boss battle to this game and it's mecca akuma which is actually really cool even if he did beat the living shay oh major in every battle seriously mecca akuma is a beast unfortunately though this just kind of feels like the least worthwhile and meaningful addition to the series yet but maybe the ps1 port has been improved over x-men vs street fighter and ends up giving us an experience closer to the arcade version well once again all the issues prevalent in the port of x-men vs street fighter appear here the long loading times the missing animation tag battles once again are gone and new to this game the sound quality now seems to be all over the place background music is sometimes way too loud and some of the sound effects can be really distorted at times [Music] one nice improvement in the gameplay however while nowhere near perfect the amount of slowdown has been greatly improved over x-men versus street footer and also some of the new effects on the specials can look pretty nice definitely the flashiest we've seen in the series so far so if you're going to pick up x-men vs or marvel vs based on the gameplay alone this would probably be the one to go for it should be clear at this point that capcom's arcade fighters were just outpacing the capabilities of sony's hardware there's just too many cuts and compromises to really make it worth recommending any of the ps1 versions of these games although that being said if this was your only exposure to any of these fighters you'd probably end up still thinking these are fantastic games because the core of the gameplay here is as fantastic as ever in spite of all the issues it's just that when you're aware of how much better these games were supposed to be and have to grade them based on the port alone marvel superheroes versus street fighter is just another bad part of a great game but even then this game is probably the most forgettable of the bones due to how little it adds to the formula it just feels like capcom is throwing out a new game because well you know they can and money's nice so why not capcom does still have one more chance to stick to landing though so let's see if they can fix things up for their final marvel crossover on the playstation especially since the next one is by far their biggest yet [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] marvel vs capcom [Applause] [Music] marvel vs capcom well here it is the final marvel crossover fighter released on the playstation 1 and probably the most famous of the bunch marvel vs capcom clash of superheroes was first released in arcades in 1998 and later ported to the playstation by capcom in the year 2000. this game here is pretty much the culmination of all the previous games tweaks and gimmicks to create the biggest crossover fighter yet and not only do we get a new roster of marvel characters but we also get to see some of capcom's other franchises make their first appearance in a fighting game the roster here is actually the smallest of the versus fighters so far with 15 characters but with new additions like strider gin megaman captain commando war machine and venom there's at least some more variety here to shake things up compared to the previous entries the boss character in this game is onslaught which is really cool to see you don't really have him popping up in too many video games do you this fight is one of the toughest scene in the games yet it's actually a two-phase boss fight one where you fight him in a normal 1v1 fight and then another where you gotta fight a giant form it's really cool a fun feature is that when you beat the arcade mode you can actually choose to play through the game as onslaught using both his normal and joint size modes this is the kind of dumb content that i like to see gameplay in marvel vs capcom once again continues on from the previous games the arcade version is once again a tag battler and once again this ps1 port drops the tag feature due to the hardware limitations and since some of the new gameplay features are specific to the tag feature we actually miss out on a few improvements to the gameplay this time which kind of sucks there is one notable new feature though and that is the ability to select a support assist from a wide variety of additional marvel and capcom characters these characters can assist you mid-game with attacks and counters some of them are reused from previous games but there's also a lot of new characters here too their implementation in this game is kind of lacking unfortunately since they were really meant to complement the tag system but hey it's it's something while the porter course has the usual compromises we've come to expect from additional loading times the missing animations the game's visuals do look to have improved over the previous two games it's especially noticeable with the background they are a lot more active and colorful this time around resembling something closer to marvel's superheroes and quality the sound still seems to have some issues stemming from the last release with some weird audio cuts music starting and stopping in the store it's sound effects in some places which is all rather unfortunate but on the bright side the soundtrack for this game is one of the best yet the perfect music to battle too [Music] the port itself also runs very well there's minimal slow down and look even though the game is still missing tons of animations and features this does seem to be a nice improvement and an impressive port considering how old the ps1 hardware was in the year 2000 hell this game didn't even get a port of the saturn it skipped right over to the dreamcast instead so this makes the little playstation port all the more impressive is this my favorite of the bunch well that remains to be seen but i do think this is one of the better efforts we know they can't offer the full experience but what's here is a fun and fulfilling fighting game that honestly anybody can enjoy now with all the capcom fighters out the way i'm looking forward to playing pretty much any other genre after doing five fighters in the row i wonder what we got next [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] i swear a while ago when i was wishing for more fighting games to show up in these videos a monkey paw must have curled somewhere here we have x-men mutant academy released in the year 2000 and developed by paradox development with activision now on publishing duties not only are we entering the long-running activision era of marvel games but this here is also the first movie toying game that we're looking at now while this game doesn't strictly follow the plot of the movie or well any plot for that matter this game was released on the same day as the first x-men movie and does feature a bunch of content and costumes from a 2 so it's about as close to a movie tie-in as you're gonna get once again this is another x-men fighter and would you believe it the game plays almost exactly like capcom's fighters except it's in 3d kinda while the game itself is in 3d all the fighting here takes place on a 2d plane so outside of some cool camera cuts during super moves and trolls you really just gotta focus on nothing but the y and x axis here and while it would have been nice to try a fighter with full 3d movement the good news is that the gameplay on offer here is really quite good i mean yeah it is pretty much just a street fighter derivative but if you're gonna copy anybody you might as well copy the best the game features a roster of 10 playable characters four of which you gotta unlock through arcade mode now it's not a huge amount here but there is a good selection most of the characters did appear in x-men the movie but there are a few other favorites included here like beast and gambit each character has a choice of their comic book outfit or their movie inspired outfit and they even added movie style outfits for characters who didn't even appear in the movies which is a nice touch so as mentioned before if you played a capcom footer you can pick this game up no problem you've got light medium and heavy punches and kicks all the special moves are quarter circles and charge inputs and you've got a variety of directional trolls all of which look really cool thanks to the dynamic camera angles during them one of mystique's trolls is quite literally the most destructive ddt i've ever seen she's putting jake the snake on notice this game does have some unique features up its sleeve too and some of them are pretty well implemented one is that there's a counter button which will allow you to interrupt any move if timed right although keep in mind you've only got three uses of this button per mat so it's kind of like a panic button if you're caught in a pinch the most interesting addition to this game though in my opinion is the split super meter you'll notice below that each character has tree bars and each bar represents one of your characters three super moves these bars fill up depending on the attacks and the damage that you take light attacks for the first bar medium for the second and heavy for the last bar now some of these supers can be chained into one another and some of them even have additional time button presses to increase their damage output as well it may seem pretty complicated and involved on face value but it works really well with the gameplay i actually like it quite a bit another strategic element is that you can transfer meter from one bar to another so if you've got a little in one bar and another is almost full a simple button combination and bam you've got a full bar is the combat here as polished to say something from capcom or snk no not quite but paradox has made a weighty and fun fighting game here and i'm genuinely impressed by the quality of it this is also a really good looking ps1 game sure the ps1 era 3d ages the game quite a bit but for the time the 3d models in this game look fantastic the stages and backgrounds while not quite at the same level of the characters also complement the game nicely and i mean look i i appreciate any game that lets me fight magneto near a volcano the game's sound does leave a little bit to be desired the music is fine if pretty forgettable but this is another game where the volume for the effects and music seem to be mixed really poorly i would recommend tinkering with them a little bit in the options before playing as when i first tried this game some of the supers nearly blew my eardrums out another big plus for this game is the amount of content that it has now compared to all the other capcom photos we've just played this game has unlockable characters additional unlockable costumes for each character artwork trailers cgi cutscenes for beating arcade mode a whole tutorial and training section for each character and look i mean obviously all this stuff is pretty standard now in fighting games but it does put it leagues ahead of capcom's games in terms of single player replayability honestly this game surprised me i was kind of dreading playing another fighting game immediately after tackling so many in a row but even though this game more or less copies the formula from capcom fighters this game feels and plays different enough to make it stand on its own and when it all clicks the fighting here is really satisfying but if you're an x-men fan or even just looking for a good hard-hitting fighting game on the ps1 x-men mutant academy is definitely worth checking out [Music] [Music] [Applause] not even warmed up [Music] finally something that isn't a fighting game here we have spider-man released in the year 2000 and once again published by activision with never soft on developer duties this time around neversoft is of course famous for developing the tony hawk's pro skater franchise as well as the weird bruce willis game called apocalypse which is actually pretty good spider-man is an action platformer where you play through a series of linear levels fighting crimes swinging from rooftops saving hostages hitting switches setting aliens on fire you know spider-man stuff from the get-go you can tell this game was made by people who really got the essence of the character up until this point while there had been some other decent spider-man video games nobody had ever really been able to capture or emulate the feeling of playing as spider-man and look nowadays in 2021 we've got that pretty much perfected but back in the year 2000 this was the game that laid the groundwork for all the great spider-man games we've seen in the years since web slinging that actually works a wide variety of different web-based attacks and abilities simple fast-paced hand-to-hand combat the ability to crawl on pretty much anything in a fully treaty environment it's it's spider-man now there's no open world new york no crimes to solve on the fly hell you can't even see the ground because of all this fog but it's it's still spider-man now the game's plot is pretty good essentially a reformed doc gets attacked by an evil spider-man doppelganger which leads to the police turning on the real spider-man so you're basically trying to figure out who's behind all of this while avoiding the cops and other superheroes who are now trying to track you down spoiler it was doc all along also he flooded the entire city with a thick fog which is one of the few cases where a game covers for its graphical limitations through actual storytelling you'll love to see it throughout the game you'll encounter plenty of friendly faces from other marvel franchises and of course we can't have a good spider-man game without an equally good selection of villains and this game offers them up in spades of course we have doc ock but you'll also get the chance to fight scorpion venom rhino mysterio carnage and even a final fight against monster rock who was a combination of doc ock and the car in its symbiote which is such a good idea i can't believe nobody has ever revisited this in any other mediums he's terrifying each character is also written and voiced excellently it's hardly the most involved spider-man story you'll ever see but neversoft managed to capture the essence and humor of what makes spider-man and its cast of characters so memorable no other game on the list has even come close to this hey hey i got a bingo ha ha you guys think you're so smart but i won ha who's your daddy doc ock ha ha ha victory is mine you're always laughing at me but who's crying now huh wait a minute i made a mistake as for the game itself there's a lot of variety on offer open levels that promote a lot of web singing to get around levels that involve you being chased or working against the timer and plenty of indoor locations which definitely take advantage of spidey's abilities to crawl on walls and ceilings and this can lead to some pretty interesting level designs too the gameplay remains pretty much the same throughout the game but each level usually adds some sort of new gimmick into the fray to keep things interesting as you go on boss fights also switch things up often to keep things fresh all the villains battles are designed to complement their individual powers and while not all the fights are winners each battle does offer up something new and i appreciate the effort that was made considering there's so many bosses in this game combat really does make up a big chunk of the game though and thankfully you've got a lot of moves at your disposal most of the time you'll probably be using spidey's hand-to-hand combat to take out enemies combos can be strung together easily by using the dedicated punch or kick buttons and you've also got a variety of aerial attacks and trolls as well and of course the game does give you a wide variety of web-based attacks to take on enemies too you can tie up weaker enemies with a string shot fire a strong web ball attack protect yourself in a web dome that shatters the damage enemies or even bulk up your punching power with some web globes these web attacks are all performed using the triangle button with different abilities activated depending on which directional input you press alongside the web button so they're all really easy to execute while in combat web as a resource is limited though so you can't spam web moves all the time but your web can't be refilled using cartridges littered throughout levels and thankfully using your web sling doesn't drain the meter so feel free to swing about to your heart's content honestly at this point in time this spider-man game was probably the most successful translation of a comic book hero into any video game yet the characters agility power skills they'd all been implemented really well into the gameplay and not only that it was fun and polished too at the time this wasn't just the best spider-man game it was the best comic book game period in my opinion and that's why it's interesting to come back and play it again today with a fresh perspective because while i think this is still a great game it has aged very very poorly in some regards visually the game was pretty good for the time although coming back to it you can tell the game was pushing the ps1 hardware a lot because this game is right for frame drops and stuttering and as soon as the action heats up the game just starts to chug the character models are pretty good but the static faces have not aged all that gracefully although they can make some of the cutscenes unintentionally funny the sound quality here is okay i mean outside of some of the boss teams the soundtrack overall is pretty forgettable there's a lot of hard rock and new metal riffs but it's nothing really impactful or memorable ah the old trusty spidey armor [Music] we have a winner spider-man also this game's camera is peak ps1 camera you can center it but outside of that you have no direct control and you're entirely at its mercy and with a game that often has you crawling up walls and into tight spaces the camera is just gonna fight with you the entire way through this game you will likely die so many times from the camera just with you out of nowhere and the camera only gets worse when you mix it up with spider-man's combat while the huge array of moves and attacks is welcome this game's combat remains very one note true and becomes more of an annoyance rather than a fun gameplay element before long a big reason for this is the game's lock-on system when you're facing an enemy a little red arrow will appear above the enemy if you're locked onto it now this is all automatic and while it works most of the time it's so easy to lose a lock on an enemy and just end up wasting your web attacks hitting a wall instead and when you're fighting more than one enemy it becomes an even bigger problem with the lock-on just randomly swapping around throughout the fight you'll end up getting hit so many times from either not being able to see enemies or your attacks just randomly changing direction all the time for the amount of combat that is in this game and how difficult some of the later fights can get at times the combat system here while simple is just not refined enough to keep the combat fun and engaging as the game goes on even if they eventually let you burn up symbiote to flame web which is pretty cool for every part of this game that's still good there's another part that's aged terribly and it sucks to say but i think playing the more modern iteration of spider-man makes it more difficult to return to this one because every aspect of this game has been improved immensely in the more modern releases and what was pretty revolutionary in the year 2000 feels like a very early prototype of what would come to be this was the best superhero game ever made in the year 2000 but now all of the amazing features and spidey abilities that made us overlook its flaws the first time around are now also old and out of date so you kind of end up with this fun but immensely clunky spider-man game i think if you can set your expectations right there is still enough here to make it worth playing true the late great stan lee narrates the entire game there's tons of collectible comic book covers you can find throughout the levels loads of replayability thanks to unlockable costumes which also give you game changing modifiers that can make the game easier or harder and the writing and voice acting is once again really really good and genuinely very funny there's also a baller remix of the spider-man theme on the main menu which could only be made in the year 2000. [Music] and maybe the best thing about the whole game if you type swear words into the cheat section spider-man does this hell wholesome spider-man is a classic case of a great game that's just aged worse than some of its peers but in spite of it all this will always remain one of my favorite spider-man games it's the perfect time capsule of the character prior to his big movie adaptation and a game made for fans of the old comics and tv shows and you could tell the team at neversoft who made this we're big fans too this isn't the great game at once wolves but even with its flaws it's still a very enjoyable game i think at the very least it will always deserve some respect for laying the groundwork for the spider-man games that came after it this is the granddaddy of good spider-man games after all it's a little old and janky but there's still plenty this game has to offer for fans of spidey and older games alike time to burst your bubble mysterious [Music] right now you're thinking if only you'd taken that giant act to vegas instead curse your endless battle spider-man [Music] you're nearly there now business is going to pick up real soon anything i should watch for keep your eyes open for the vines per leader big bastard so i hear vicious too okay i'll take it from here only break silence if you need to check blade was released on the playstation late in the year 2000 and once again published by activision this time with hammerhead studios on development duty hammerhead may not be a very familiar name but they were responsible for the playstation port of quake 2 and also jinx one of the last 3d platformers ever released on the playstation i don't blame you if you've never heard of it i mean i mean look at them so out with the entire marvel movie pantheon blade is probably in my top three marvel movies it might even be number one it's just it's just so good blade came out during a tumultuous time for marvel the company had filed for bankruptcy in 1996 and surprisingly one of the company's big saviors was blade the 1998 movie featuring one of marvel's lesser-known characters and this vampire action movie of all things was the huge hit marvel needed blade was basically the first step towards the creation of the whole mcu from x-men to spider-man all the way until it really kicked into gear with iron man in 2008 blade proved that the appetite was there for comic book movies as long as the people making them cared about the source material so with blade being the big hit that it was it's not surprising to see activision take advantage of the license and drop a blade game on the ps1 although it came nearly two years after the movie's original release better late than never i suppose although according to critics at the time maybe never was the better option blade for ps1 was panned critically receiving very low scores across a wide range of online and print publications because of this i've always avoided the game but since then i have learned that the game also has a small but pretty dedicated fan base so is blade for ps1 really bad as the reviewer say or is this maybe a hidden gem that we've been sleeping on all this time well it's time to find out so upon starting blade the game immediately leaves some strong impressions both good and bad on the good side the cutscene dialogue and voice acting is all excellent the majority of the game you'll be hearing blade and whistler bouncing off on another but even the minor characters here are voiced well and have some great lines the story here toying the game together isn't going to set the world on fire but the presentation and the quality of the cutscenes really are quite impressive on the bad side well you'll quickly learn blade on ps1 runs like absolute dirt a widely inconsistent frame rate sometimes dropping down to single digits texture warping and rough textures present pretty much everywhere in the game if you're the kind of person who can't stand games with poor performance blade is pretty much a ride off immediately out the gate now luckily i'm not one of those people i can criticize the game for its abysmal performance but i play ps1 games for fun so this is to be expected from time to time and surprisingly in spite of the game's terrible performance i can't really say the gameplay suffers too much because of it blade is a surprisingly slow-paced and methodical game that kind of plays like a weird horror themed combo of cyphon filter and metal gear solid the game is played from a third-person perspective with no camera controls the automatic camera does a good job sticking behind the character at all times although certain areas will swap to a fixed camera angle kind of like a rezzy game combat takes up the majority of this game and thankfully this is where the game really shines blade will take on a wide variety of different enemies across the game these enemies can vary from humans zombies vampires honestly any l monster might show up here you never know what you're gonna get but blade is thankfully kitted out with a ton of different options to tackle each type of enemy and you've got a wide variety of guns and ammo types each suited as well to taking out different enemies so for example if you want to take down a human use some standard pistol rounds you want to take out a vampire chop them up with your silver samurai sword or use some silver nitrate shotgun rounds zombies no problem use your machine gun kit out with carbide bullets or just karate people today whatever works for you so as you can see this game's enemies each have different weaknesses to different types of weapons and ammo and you'll want to take advantage of that because the enemies in this game can kill you in a matter of seconds if you approach a situation without being prepared mercifully the game pauses the action when you access your weapon or item menu now this functions almost exactly like metal gear solids inventory selection and it lets you swap ammo and heal up without taking too much risk blade thankfully has a very useful target lock system that allows you to shoot and strafe around enemies without too much trouble but on top of this and managing your ammo types for the appropriate enemies this game also has a critical shot mechanic which is almost mandatory to master in the top right you'll see a little icon that fills up as soon as you lock onto an enemy if you tap the shoot button exactly as this fills up to the max you'll land a critical shot the timing on this is very strict and does vary from weapon to weapon but mastering this skill is the difference between killing enemies with one bullet or six so it's something you'll want to do whenever possible since the enemies are so dangerous the game really forces you to take your time and assess every situation moving too quickly around a corner can end up with you dying in an instant but scoping out an area and picking off your targets one by one is a much safer and satisfying way to play bosses as you could imagine are also plentiful and incredibly deadly this is where some of the game's more advanced weaponry comes in handy with things like explosive ammo stakes and even uv grenades the game moves at a really good pace too the game seamlessly flows from level to level you'll come across the odd loading screen from time to time but you're rarely taken out of the action before proceeding to new areas outside of the combat each level usually features a bunch of puzzles to solve some basic platforming hidden areas and a ton of items and collectibles to find the levels themselves actually look pretty good the dodgy textures and warping aside blade can be a very dark game at times but i never found that i got in the way of navigating around the levels i wish there was a bit more visual variety to some of the locations but when the game does introduce new areas they generally look quite nice i don't know i think the critics might be wrong on this one blade does run like absolute trash but it offers up its own unique style of slower pace combat that really helps carry the game through its problems but at the end of the day there's just something deeply satisfying about killing vampires with a samurai sword i never got tired of it blade also features a really odd soundtrack full of different electronic and ambient tracks the game is full of trip hop drum and bass break beats blade soundtrack manages to cover a ton of different styles it is really not the kind of soundtrack you'd expect this sort of game to have and i'm not even 100 of it suits the game all that well but it's one of the most memorable parts of the game in my opinion at least [Music] blade is a game that i genuinely really like it's a flawed gem there's so many things that would turn a player off almost immediately when trying this game out at the start from the difficulty to the awful performance but if you can overlook the frame rate and are willing to master the game's mechanics blade offers up some really satisfying and intense horror themed action on the playstation i'm only disappointed on myself for sleeping on it for so long [Music] [Music] oh [Music] just like [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] here we have the first numbered sequel to ever show up in the series x-men mutant academy 2 was released in september 2001 and once again coming from activision and paradox games i was a big fan of the first mutant academy game and the good news is that mutant academy 2 sticks to the same formula but just makes it bigger and better at first glance this probably looks exactly the same as the first game all of the major gameplay elements remain pretty much intact you still have your three super bars you can still swap meter freely between each of them and you still have access to counters and a wide array of specials and super moves for each character every character on level from the previous game also makes a return here so what's actually new well in mutant academy 2 we've got the addition of eight new characters bumping the roster up to a pretty impressive total of 18. havoc rogue nightcrawler and forge are the new additions unlocked from the start but there's four additional unlockable characters as well but we'll cover them in a little bit on top of the new characters this game also adds new stages new music new costumes new artwork to collect this really does just feel like a bigger better version of the first game in pretty much every conceivable way but the biggest changes actually come from small additions and refinements to the gameplay mutant academy 2's new gameplay feature is air combos and similarly to capcom's games you can launch yourself up in the air after an opponent for a brief opportunity to land some additional damage with a combo now each character had their moves and combos updated to play into this new addition and there really is some crazy depth and flexibility with some of the stuff that you can pull off here now this would normally be something that goes over my head while playing these games casually but mutant academy 2's character tutorials return here again and this time the game teaches you a small selection of effective ground and air combos for each of the 18 characters this means you can spend 5 or 10 minutes training with a character and without having to look up a guide online you can be pulling off crazy ground into air combos pretty much straight away training modes and game tutorials especially were very lacking in fighting games from this era and this one here is probably the most helpful fighting game tutorial i've seen in any ps1 fighter it's really quite impressive outside of this there's really no other additions to the game you've of course got versus mode for local fights but for single player you've still only got arcade and survival mode to sync your tee into but since this game features a wider range of unlockable content compared to the first there's plenty here to keep you playing for hours on end mutant academy 2 really is just a more mechanically refunded unexpanded version of the first game and honestly that's completely fine what was already a really fun fighting game now just feels better than ever the play combat is so much more fluid and satisfying with the expanded combo system the new characters are a ton of fun to play all of them featuring a wide range of silly over-the-top super moves something that this series really excels in to make things even better though we still have to take a look at the additional unlockable characters early on you'll unlock psylocke and juggernaut playing to arcade mode great additions to the roster but not the best ones spider-man makes an appearance as one of this game's secret characters probably thanks to some handy cross promotion from activision but the spidey in this game plays very differently to any other fighting games iteration of spider-man the spider-man and mutant academy 2 just pops off with pretty much every move he does i don't know what i'm doing half the time but it looks great and i keep winning so this is good i like this spidey but the best character i kept for last because they only went and put professor x in a fighting game straight up old psychic dude in a wheelchair in a fighting game pulling off crazy like this seems like it's a joke character yeah he has maybe a quarter of the moves of other fighters he can't jump because i mean would he jump but professor x can just batter lads with projectiles or even get the characters to beat up themselves or hit them with the secret wheelchair tornado technique i love this so much it's so dumb and it should not work but it does x-men mutant academy 2 still isn't a perfect game even though there are more stages included the backgrounds can still feel a little bit bland and lacking when compared to the excellent character models and the game's new music tracks are appreciated but overall the game's soundtrack is still a bit lacking for a fighting game in my opinion but with a much bigger character roster better gameplay and expanded robust training mode and tons more stuff to unlock what we have here is just a much better version of an already really good game the 3d graphics have aged it a bit and it still lacks the polish of a capcom or snk fighter but mutant academy 2 genuinely is one of the best fighting games i've played on the console it's fun it's flashy it's occasionally really dumb and it's definitely a game you should be seeking here for your collection seriously it's like only five quid try it you need more practice [Music] ah [Music] soon eagleoid viewers might have seen a teaser for our final game in the background of x-men mutant academy too spider-man 2 enter electro was released in september of 2001 published as usual by activision but this time instead of never sought returning we actually have vicarious visions taking over on development duty enter electro is a direct follow-up to the story of the last game this time you were tasked with stopping electro from becoming some sort of lightning god thanks to a very special vest hey it's something we'll roll with it if you're familiar with the first game and you should be we checked it out just a short while ago then you'll feel right at home here it's built on the same engine all the button commands and abilities are the same it's just more spider-man with new levels and bosses and once again more of a good thing is fine by me there has been some small additions and refinements to the game which are much appreciated they added a lock on button for targeting enemies and while the lock on here is still a little awkward at times it does end up making combat way more manageable in this game there's also some new training stages and tutorials that take place in the x-men danger room with professor xavier and rogue activision really trying to bank big time in the x-men movie by the way controls and combat in this game just feel a little snappier overall it could have just been practiced from the last game but it did feel easier to navigate throughout the levels with spidey this time around the camera can still be dog from time to time but just like the last game it's something you can learn to work around playing true enter electro really does feel like an expansion pack at times you see a lot of new additions thrown into the gameplay but for the most part this is just more of the first game although even with the improvements there's quite a few areas where enter electro performs much worse than its predecessor one key part is the game's performance now while the first game was known for running a bit slow at times spider-man 2 can sometimes feel like a slideshow this game features a lot more wide open levels for spider-man to get through and the game does not have a good time trying to maintain a steady frame rate in some of these locations whenever there's big effects or a couple of enemies on the screen just expect the game to go into panic mode while it's trying to keep up with everything spidey's more open-ended levels are also a bit of a disappointment too a lot of the levels are just open spaces where you get to swing around hit some switches and avoid enemies these levels seem to also take a bigger focus on stealth but i mean a lot of them are really just bland and designed like there's nothing interesting for you to do but just swing from one end to another and just hit a few switches most of the rooftop levels play fairly similarly as well they're just much bigger in scale but there's practically no set pieces compared to some of the cooler stuff we've seen in the first game that's not to say that some of the missions themselves aren't fun playing as spider-man still feels as good as the previous game if not better so it's still a joy swinging from rooftop to rooftop and crawling through vents some of the new levels do take great advantage of spider-man's abilities to make for some great platforming sections that definitely improve on the original it's just overall i find the missions in this game don't quite match up to the quality of what neversoft did instead of cool stuff like detonating bombs and safes or outrunning helicopters here you get a lot of terrors to climb and switches to hit and then more towers to climb and then more switches to hit the actual roster of villains here is pretty lacking compared to the first game shocker sandman hammerhead the lizard all make appearances here and of course the game's main villain electro gets a lot of time to shine the boss fights here can range from very easy but tedious to incredibly manic and difficult the first boss fight with shocker the dude's blasting at you pretty much constantly threat the fight from the word go the game gives you a hint to throw boxes at him from above or at the sides but the guy quite literally will not give you a chance to do so you end up just having to dive in and button bash him to death which actually ends up working quite effectively mind you there's also a level where you have to stop a plane which i'm going to count as a boss because this plane is in fact my mortal enemy this took me so many tries because the plane explodes within seconds of starting you've gotta run ahead and throw barrels out of the way and open doors to make room for the plane to stop but the whole thing is just incredibly awkward to do some of the fights are fun though the battle against the lizard where you've got to solve a formula puzzle and make a sedative web is pretty fun the dude's also like completely feral trying to attack you he's so fast electro unfortunately ends up being a really disappointing final boss too both his normal and god forms are really easy to beat and the god form especially is just so tedious it's just running back and forth behind generators for about five minutes supposedly this fight was meant to take place across the twin towers of the world trade center but uh being a game released in september of the year 2001 this had to be changed very quickly in the last minute so now you fight across two generic terror buildings instead can't imagine that was too fun for the team to do if i'm being honest electro just comes across as a really lame villain in this game i kind of think electro is a pretty lame villain as it is i mean this is not a threatening outfit nobody can convince me otherwise but even the writing the story the voice lines the cutscenes everything in this game feels really generic compared to the first one it just doesn't flow very well the humor falls flat a lot of the time it's just it's just missing that spidey magic there's also practically no cameos this time around we get to see beast at the beginning because hey more x-men go see x-men but that's it outside of the last games villains popping up again in the ending cutscene the game entirely focuses on just spidey and the few new villains at least stan lee returns to narrate the game and as always he's excellent welcome true believers stan lee here to bring you yet another scintillating tale of superhero daring do even the new web types they added ice and electric offer almost nothing new to the gameplay ice freezes people in place which is like what your normal web kind of does anyway and the electric does more damage to machine enemies but you never need to use them in interesting ways like with the fire web for taking out symbiotes in the last game here they're nothing but damage buffs really i wish i didn't have to be so hard on this game but it genuinely does feel like a less polished expansion pack for the first game it's also a lot shorter taking only a little over two hours to be you've thankfully still got a lot of replayability with comic covers hidden within levels and tons more costumes to unlock there's plenty of new ones where even more fun game modifiers added and they even added in all the previous costumes from the last game which is a nice touch even with my critiques there is still a lot to like here the core gameplay remains a lot of fun and if you enjoyed the first game chances are you'll enjoy this one quite a bit too as long as you can overlook the rough performance and usual camera issues spider-man 2 enter electro is still one of the better comic book games released on the ps1 [Music] come on oh great more guards so there you have it we've taken a look at every single marvel game released on the ps1 wasn't that exciting don't answer that question look all things considered there was a lot of good games in that collection i mean sure they weren't all winners but at the end of the day the quality of marvel games on the ps1 the ratio is pretty damn high but which game is gonna stand tall as the very best marvel game released on the ps1 honestly that's gonna be a tough one to call but at the end of the day we need a winner and more importantly so let's get right into it it's time to rank every marvel game released on the ps1 in order from worst to best play me in beloved 90's x-men theme [Music] was there ever any doubt the incredible hulk the pantheon saga is a boring game with awful combat and even worse platforming it's a disgrace that this is the hulk's only solo outing on the playstation and it's a textbook example of how not to make a hulk game and the only game on this list that i have nothing positive to say about the pantheon saga in my opinion is the definitive worst marvel game on the ps1 [Music] if we were ranking this list based on the number of sak solos fantastic four would be a shoo-in for the top spot but unfortunately no amount of jazz phone can make up for fantastic four's numerous flaws whether it is the awkward special move inputs or the insane difficulty spikes when playing solo or with aoi this is not a fantastic game for solo players but if you can convince 3 friends to play this with you this brawler has the potential to be a really good time this is one of the few brawlers on the ps1 that supports four players after all and with some nice level variety and uh weird enemies well i'm sure you could do much worse nowhere near the same tier as the hulk but fantastic four takes its place just above it in the number 12 spot it's ugly as soon and has character movement that makes you feel like you're underwater but this is far from the worst game ever made playing it solo might lead to some frustrating moments but when it's firing on all cylinders there's definitely some fun to be had here plus it gets bonus points for the dumb horizontal scrolling shooter section iron man xo manowar takes its place as my 11th best marvel game on the ps1 i know putting x-men versus street fighter in 10th place may seem insane this is an amazing game no doubt about it but the ps1 version just features so many downgrades compared to other versions of this incredible game that there's practically no reason to play this version today long loading times missing animations and worst of all tag battles have been completely removed from the game don't get me wrong this is still a fun fighting game but the ps1 port is a disservice to the excellent arcade original and just not worth revisiting in modern times that's why it's my choice for the 10th spot on this list [Music] [Applause] you take all the issues i have with the previous game but at a slightly better roster and some better overall performance and well you get a better game but with nearly all this game's content reused from older titles in the series there's still not much that sets it apart from x-men versus street fighter if you were to pick one over the other this is the one that i'd go for but regardless this port is still a shadow of the arcade original once again there is very little reason to play this version nowadays but even then there's no denying the quality at marvel superheroes versus street fighter's core which locks it into the number nine spot while this is absolutely the best of the versus series on the playstation with an exciting roster beautiful backgrounds and a great soundtrack i just can't recommend a version of a tag fighter that doesn't have tag fighting even with improved performance over the previous two games this version of marvel vs capcom just feels lacking if you've ever played the original once again i can't deny the quality at its core but there is no way i would choose this version over the arcade or dreamcast version another disappointing port of an amazing game marvel vs capcom takes its place at number eight [Music] x-men children of the atoms ps1 port should have been better but numerous development issues lead us to another poor port of an excellent game this game is roy football to slow down ai difficulty that goes through the roof even at the lowest level and unfortunately the game just seems to be lacking that little bit of extra polish that you'd expect from a capcom fighter even with these issues the big difference between this and the versus games is that this is still the full experience it's still not a version of the game i would recommend playing but at least it's the full x-men children of the atom experience and even at its worst this still earns the number 7 spot on the list spider-man 2 enter electro is a really fun game it's more spider-man on the ps1 and that in itself is a great thing but with less interesting levels tedious bosses worse riding and some very rough performance issues compared to the original this game ends up being a little disappointing but even with these issues and its very short length the improvements to the combat and gameplay still make this a game every spidey fan should have in their ps1 collection and it's my pick for number six [Music] the most pleasant surprise for me on this list is blade a game i thought i would hate but ended up being one of my favorites of the bunch look there's no denying this game is rough around the edges but the game's slower pace and tactical combat genuinely make it one of the more unique action horror experiences on the console if you can put up with a little jank blade on the ps1 is a rewarding game that is very much worth your time and is my pick for number five [Music] another pleasant surprise was x-men mutant academy a great fighting game for players of all skill levels featuring a hard-hitting combat system full of silly over-the-top specials sure it's a capcom fighter clone at the end of the day but it does offer enough unique gimmicks to make it stand on its own as a quality ps1 exclusive fighter and with a robust training mode and lots of unlockables this is a game that could keep you busy for hours and for that reason it's my choice for number four [Music] what happens when you take a great game add more stages more characters and upgrade a combo system an upgraded training mode and even more unlockable content well you get x-men mutant academy 2 a fantastic game that might be the first game to ever include a selectable wheelchair user in a fighting game and not only that he's the best character in the whole game an absolute must-boy for x-men and fighting game fans and an easy pick for the third best marvel game on the playstation what you're seeing here is the potential the other capcom fighters had while the ps1 port of marvel superheroes is still lacking compared to the siren and arcade versions this here is still an excellent version of the game minimal performance issues no missing features just pure unadulterated capcom fighter goodness as it should be with a great roster beautiful 2d graphics an amazing soundtrack and the fun infinity gem system if you had to pick one marvel fighter for the playstation this is for my money the one to get marvel super heroes is my pick for the second best marvel game on the playstation [Music] i said during my spider-man review that back when this game first came out i thought this was the best superhero video game ever made now that certainly isn't the case nowadays but after careful consideration i still think this is the best superhero game on the playstation this is a game that makes you feel like the character the game is named after sure it's primitive nowadays but this is a spider-man game where you're doing spider-man things you're saving hostages you're fighting doc ock you're tying up bad guys you're scaling walls and you're swinging from rooftop to rooftop sure you can do most of this stuff in spider-man 2 but never sauce level design the set pieces the writing everything here just feels like it came from a development studio who understood and loved the character and the game is just elevated because of it it's got some frustrating moments for sure but it's got tons of replayability loads of great marvel cameos and most importantly it's just a really fun video game when i think of good marvel games this will always be one i'll count among the best and even if it isn't the best spider-man game it's still the granddaddy of good spider-man games and nothing will ever change that that's why it's my pick for the best marvel game on the ps1 so there we have it the best marvel game on the ps1 in my opinion is neversoft spider-man call it nostalgia call it what you want but for my money no game on the ps1 gives you the experience of playing as a superhero better than spider-man although let's be real if the capcom ports were anywhere near arcade perfect they more or less likely would have swept the ranking entirely like sure plenty of other games on the list have performance issues but like blade and spider-man 2 these are the best versions of these games that you can play all the capcom fighters on the other hand nowhere near the best versions of these games so as far as playstation versions go not for me although credit's to marvel superheroes it does come pretty close either way this is just the opinion of someone who plays ps1 games all day during a pandemic so i would more or less disregard everything i say but if you'd like to share your thoughts i'd love if you'd leave a comment below do you agree with my ranking or do you think i'm a big dumb idiot who can't say the letter h the last part is almost definitely correct regardless i'd like to thank you all for joining me here today if you enjoyed the video make sure to drop a like and if you didn't enjoy the video well there's a good chance you didn't make it this far so i'm not really going to worry about it i've got plenty more ps1 content over on the channel including videos
