[Music] author Michael Minh do know who first coined the term technical diving is also known for the following quote every dive is a decompression dive and every dive is a solo dive this is likely one of the truest statements in diving this video had its genesis in a thread that appeared on a discussion group page on Facebook the topic was solo diving and as you can imagine there were no shortage of comments now some people seem to think that so what iving was just fine where others insisted that it was the first step in the downfall of Western civilization who's right well I'm not even going to attempt to answer that one in fact I'm not even sure that there is an answer no matter what you think the fact remains that diving by themselves is something many divers choose to do and that's not going to change anytime soon my chief concern is that if you are going to argue this issue one way or the other you should at least be honest and accurate now I cringe whenever I hear somebody say well I never solo dive the fact is they do they just don't acknowledge that fact because they happen to have other divers with them in the final analysis it's not a matter of whether or not you should solo dive but rather whether you should so go dive by yourself or with others so one thing you should never do is buddy up with someone who is not as self-reliant as you are well of course you're a professional and getting paid for it will delve into the dangers of diving with someone who is not self-reliant shortly does your training agency offer a solo diving certification well the fact is it does it just may not go by that name in most agencies this course is known as the open water instructor course think about it when diving by yourself most of your attention is focused on your own survival when diving with students you are primarily focused on their survival and no one is looking out for your safety as any assistance you may have are also focused on the students first a dive instructor who is unable to ensure his own survival will almost certainly be unable to ensure his student survival as well the problem with discussions of solo diving is that they seem to be based on the assumption all divers are equally competent and of course they are not there is in fact a hierarchy of risk based on diver competence it goes something like this at greatest risk is an incompetent diver who is standing by himself the second greatest risk would be to incompetent buddy dependent divers diving together and possibly dying together the third greatest risk would be a competent self-reliant diver who happens to be diving by himself and certainly the least greatest risk would be to competent self-reliant divers functioning is a well-coordinated team that of course is a broad generalization there are many variables that come into play in any individual situation what is significant is that a competent self-reliant diver diving by himself can easily be safer than two in competent divers diving together so if you want to jump into one of these online discussions regarding the merits of solo diving or the lack thereof at least be honest odds are you to our solo diver you just solo dive with buddies
