hey guys bowler here yeah it's been a while since I've done that to be honest the other day I saw a really cool video from Aaron showing off all the costume references and origins in Smash ultimate and by the end of it I was thinking man someone should make this for Smash Flash and now here we are every character in Super Smash Flash 2's costume references in fact every character has 12 unique costumes which when compared to the 8 in Super Smash Bros ultimate it makes for a lot of references and also makes it really hard to find some of them also all the characters who have basic color swaps we're not going to be doing so all of these characters say goodbye alright so let's jump right into it with Mario's costumes first up is the red and white palette which is an easy reference to when Mario picks up the fire flower power up and turns into fire Mario the blue and red costume most likely resembles his original look in the Mario Bros arcade game however with the blue and red color swapped next is Mario's yellow and purple outfit which is a one-to-one match to Wario's default costume even having the green boots Mario's Black and White costume is most likely resembling in the same costume he had in melee which seems to likely be a melee original Mario's next costume this green one is likely a reference to Wrecking Crew on the NES specifically the depiction of Mario on the Japanese cover this purple Mario is actually a reference to the original costume that Mario had before he got real costumes and was just a simple Hue adjustment pink and blue Mario is a reference to the Japanese box art for Mario Bros with the colors for the shirt and overall swapped next is a really cool reference to Mario Golf being Mario's fourth alternative costume swap in that game it also looks fairly similar to smg4 but a little bit off after that is a costume that closely resembles the B Mario power up from Mario Galaxy Mario also has another great reference with this costume being the look that shadow Mario has in Mario Sunshine and Lassie is a retro style costume for Mario which references his appearance in Mario Bros 3. moving on let's check out Luigi's costumes just like Mario Luigi has his own fire flower power up costume after that is pink Luigi which seems to be a reference to the original Smash Bros pink Luigi which looks similar to his in-game Sprite in wrecking crew light blue Luigi seems to be a reference to how Mario was depicted on the North American box art for the original Mario Bros arcade game next is orange Luigi which Bears the most resemblance to the North American box art for pinball on the NES and once again Luigi has another costume referencing a Mario appearance rather than himself a reference this time being to Mario's appearance and the DK Jr box art as for yellow Luigi it's hard to say for sure but it's possible as a reference to this box art of The Game and Watch Game manhole Brown Luigi seems to likely be an ssf2 original as we couldn't actually find any clear references the next costume for Luigi is definitely a reference to his Mario Golf costumes specifically his second and third one were combined into this single outfit purple Luigi as I mean come on it's Waluigi this costume is a very cool reference to Mr L an antagonist version of Luigi in Super Paper Mario and just like Mario Luigi has his own retro costume which references his Sprite in Super Mario Bros 3. let's move on to the one and only Princess Peach first up is this red costume with some darker reddish brown hair which seems to likely be a reference to Pauline this orange and yellow costume represents Princess Daisy specifically the look of the older design after that is a blue and blonde peach which again is a close reference to another Mario character this time being Princess Rosalina from Mario Galaxy her other blue costume with white hair seems to be an ssf2 original to fill in for her blue team color the origin for this green Peach costume is actually a reference to coup Peach sometimes called bowsette by fans which is a Bowser and Peach Fusion of sorts that was an early development for Mario Odyssey and was later released as an official early Concept in one of the art books golden Peach is a reference to the same costume that appears in smatro's Ultimate which is a smash original the next costume seems to be based on Tanuki peach in Super Mario 3D World and the white dress Peach seems to be a reference to how she appears with her wedding gown in multiple Mario games the next costume resembles how the shadow Queens possess Princess Peach form was in Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door and lastly is another retro style costume this one being how peach appeared in Super Mario Bros 2. with her turnips appearing the same way as in that game okay let's move on to the king of koopa's Bowser first up is this brown color that also appears in Smash ultimate and roughly references the same color scheme as boom boom next up is yellow Bowser which again appears in Super Smash Bros with the no actual real references after that is green Bowser which closely resembles the color scheme of Bowser had in Super Mario World next is another Smash Bros costume reference this one urgently appearing in Smash Bros brawl after that is a costume that looks very much like meowser the main antagonist form of Bowser and Super Mario 3D World red Bowser is likely from Smash Bros but with a change in the hair color and the blue Bowser is a reference to his original blue costume back on beta's launch black and blue Bowser comes from Dark Bowser one of the antagonists in Mario and Luigi Bowser's Inside Story this white Bowser that's on Dry Bowser a recurring variant of Bowser who's even appeared in Mario Kart pink Bowser likely references in mid fist another enemy from Mario and Luigi Bowser's Inside Story lastly is Bowser's retro costume which he Sports in his look in the Mario Bros 3 final boss fight next up is Yoshi which most of his costumes just reference the different Yoshis that exist in the Mario Universe first up is red Yoshi and besides referencing the goat himself it actually references of course just red Yoshi's which appear in Yoshi's story and Yoshi's Island games in fact that's the same origin for Blue Yoshi Yellow Yoshi pink Yoshi light blue Yoshi purple Yoshi Black Yoshi and white Yoshi orange Yoshi actually predates this originally being in the Game and Watch game called Greenhouse Yoshi's final costume is based on yube a lesser-known Yoshi villain from Mario Luigi partners in Time let's move on to Oreo first up much like Mario and Luigi is a fire flower powered up Wario based on an unofficial design Wario's second costume is a reference to Mario's iconic color scheme of red and blue this pink and blue one actually sees the depiction of Mario in the Japanese box art for the NES version of Mario Bros similarly the green and brown costume references the style of Luigi in the original Mario Bros this costume is a reference to form and Spike one of the characters in The Wrecking Crew game on NES he also appeared in the Mario movie I tried very hard to find the reference for this costume but it's likely just a Smash Bros original from brawl the color scheme for this costume is based on a very similar costume in Smash Bros brawl which is a smash original and this color scheme is based on the iconic biker outfit that Warrior uses in the WarioWare games this orange Wario costume according to the developers at least is a combination of a bunch of various different Mario costumes all put into one this very disgusting Wario which has golden teeth is a reference to Clarence lard bottom a character in a Flash game called clarence's Big chance and Wario has his own retro costume which references his appearance in Super Mario Land 2. okay time for Waluigi who was very difficult to get references for and he also has piranha plant costumes as well so we'll be doing those too just like Mario Luigi and Wario waluigi's second costume is a fire flower power up version of Waluigi and this piranha plant is a reference to the fire piranha plants which appeared in the Mario 3D Land and world games while Luigi's Red costume is Luigi's Red costume in the original Smash Bros but the overall in hat are reversed and the piranha plant shares a similarity to Big bungee piranha a boss in Yoshi's Island DS the green Waluigi looks like this plumber who appears in the Super Mario Bros show and the piranha plant's color scheme references the Retro look back on the NES now blue Waluigi seems to likely be an ssf2 original to fill in for a blue costume but the piranha plant is the same color scheme as the original underground piranha plants unfortunately both the yellow Waluigi and the orange Waluigi do seem seem to be ssf2 original colors yellow waluigi's piranha plant is based off of the Glad piranha plant from Super Princess Peach and the orange Waluigi piranha plants are based on the prickly piranha plants from Super Mario Galaxy 2. blue and brown Waluigi is a reference to Luigi's third costume from Mario Golf with a piranha plant that resembles the frost piranhas and Super Paper Mario this one is based on Jeff Boomhauer from King of the Hill but the piranha plant is definitely a reference to Bone piranha plants okay this next costume is likely a reference to waluigi's Alternative color scheme back in Mario Tennis with the piranha plant resembling the inky piranha plants in Super Mario 3D Land This Waluigi costume is based on these joy-con colors and the piranha plant is based on the putrid piranha lastly of course is a Luigi base while Luigi color Swap and the piranha plant here is based on the giant piranha plant on dry dry desert a Mario Kart Double Dash course now for some of my favorite costumes which are links first we have red link wearing his Goron tunic from Ocarina of Time then we have Blue Link wearing the Zora tunic also from Ocarina of Time and we have purple link playable in four Swords and white link is based on how link would look when he equipped the blue ring item in the original Legend of Zelda yellow link is reference to how link appears in Twilight Princess when he uses the Great Fairy tiers black link is a costume that was originally in Super Smash Bros melee and is based off the tunic that Dark Link wears orange link could be a number of things but it most likely resembles the spirit Medallion from Ocarina of Time Light Blue Link is a reference to how link appears in breath of the wild with matching light blue bombs to match remote bombs the pink haired link is actually how he appears in A Link to the Past with his bombs and hook shot matching the color scheme of that game next a costume based on Dark Link one of the more iconic boss fights in Ocarina of Time and lastly is retro link based on his first appearance in The Legend of Zelda on the NES moving on to the King of Evil white Ganondorf is based on the same costume from Super Smash Bros brawl which according to the brawl Wiki is a complimentary to Dark Link as for ganondorf's blue costume it's likely it was added as a blue team color for Ganondorf as the only time he's ever appeared blue is Phantom Ganon which is a huge stretch to say to reference here bring gendendorf is based on the same costume in Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS which is a smash original red Ganondorf with the white hair is possibly a reference to the king of Red Lions ganondorf's next costume uses his iconic look from the appearance in Ocarina of Time after that it's a costume that matches how gendorff appeared in the Hyrule Warriors design the design of this costume is a reference to the Calamity Ganon in breath of the wild moving on is gendorf's costume that resembles yuga's color scheme in A Link Between Worlds Ganondorf next costume is debated between being a reference to midna for the clear distinct orange hair air or Zant who also appeared in Twilight Princess is the main antagonist of that game white Ganondorf heavily resembles the same color scheme as Princess Zelda and this golden Ganondorf color swap is a reference to King harkinian from the original Zelda CDI game that we all tried to forget about alright so let's go to Pikachu Pikachu's first costume is a reference to the color scheme of Raichu the evolution of Pikachu and the next costume is actually a reference to gorochu an unused design for an evolution to write to back in red and blue prior to the addition of Pichu as a pre-evolution the pink Pikachu is based on Clefairy as Clefairy was originally going to be the mask off of Pokemon before Pikachu as for the blue Pikachu it is definitely going to be Meryl who is considered to be game freak's Pikachu clone for Generation 2. there's even an urban legend based on them called Pika blue the next one is based off of apachirisu from gen 4. after that is a costume referencing tokodamaru from generation 7. and after that is a cool reference to Evie's color scheme boss possibly because of the let's go Pikachu and let's go Eevee games as for Pikachu's green color it has a striking resemblance to the substitute doll that appears when using the move substitute in Pokemon games as for this darker blue Pikachu I think it's most likely a reference to Gale of darkness and Shadow Lugia as it has a very similar color scheme and red eyes orange Pikachu is a reference to the look of shiny Pikachu and lastly is a retro costume that looks like the in-game Sprite of Pikachu back in Pokemon yellow and next up is Jigglypuff who was quite difficult to get the costume references for many of Puff's costumes are simply just recolors with no concrete references so it's pretty safe to say that red Jigglypuff green Jigglypuff and blue Jigglypuff are probably ssf2 Originals as they match pretty closely with their filtered costumes before 1.2 as for pink with green eyes it is a match to the shiny form of Jigglypuff orange puff shares a heavily resemblance to the in-game Sprite particularly puff back in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire the purple puff with yellow eyes shares the same color scheme as driftloon which makes a lot of sense considering that puff is also considered the balloon Pokemon the yellow Jigglypuff is likely just the same as her old filtered costume back in 1.2 this darker pink puff actually matches pretty closely with her in-game Sprites in Pokemon Crystal as for white Jigglypuff it's possible with the reference two radiant Jigglypuff a fan-made alternate shiny design or also possibly a reference to Mewtwo's color scheme as for the dark purple color for Jigglypuff it is very likely that this is a reference to ghastly and lastly is the Retro puff which is based on her first appearance in Pokemon Red and Blue now time to take a look at Pichu red Pichu again seems to be similar to the gorochu which is the unused Raichu Evolution green Pichu shares the same green and yellow color scheme as Electrike from generation 2. blue P2 also seems to share the same similarity as Pikachu with Meryl from gen 2. as for the pink costume it shares the most resemblance actually with impedimp but there isn't much connection between these two characters so I don't think it's actually the intended reference and it could be just an ssf2 original the orange costume is like their reference to to DNA from Gen 6 but also charge resemblance to the shiny Pichu from gen 2. light blue Pichu is very similar to Sphinx from gen 4. the next two costumes are really cool costumes that are based on Plusle and minimum from generation 3. as for white Pichu it's exactly what it sounds like it is a reference to an unused version of Pichu originally planned for heart golden Soul Silver that was eventually replaced with the spiky eared Pichu the next costume is based on one of my favorite Pokemon mimikyu from generation 7. and the last P2 costume is a retro costume referencing Peach's appearance in Pokemon Gold and Silver time for Lucario who just like in the official Smash Bros doesn't have that many references unfortunately Lucario's costumes and smash are basically just recolors which were also brought over to Super Smash Flash such as green Lucario purple Lucario pink Lucario light blue Lucario dark blue Lucario and white Lucario who all appeared in smashed and were brought over with no references the ssf2 team did also add two more color variations being orange Lucario and black Lucario who again don't seem to have any direct connection to any Pokemon however the remaining costumes are references red Lucario does not appear in Smash Bros but does appear in pokken tournament as the alternate color for Lucario Brown Lucario shares the same color scheme as Evie just like Pikachu did and lastly this yellow one is definitely based off the shiny form of Lucario alright let's talk about Kirby's costumes first up is a color swap that is based on kiwi a fairly unknown character that was like a yellow Kirby from Kirby's Dream course Blue Kirby is a reference to how Ice Kirby appears in Kirby Superstar red Kirby is a reoccurring character in multiple Kirby games such as Kirby and the Amazing Mirror green Kirby just like red Kirby also appears in Kirby and the Amazing Mirror this monochrome look is definitely based on Kirby's appearance in Kirby's Dreamland on the Game Boy as for orange Kirby it made its first appearance as crash Kirby in the artwork for Kirby's Adventure this purple costume right here is most likely a reference to when Kirby uses the grape spray paint in Kirby in The Amazing Mirror Brown Kirby looks the most similar to the brown Kirby that's playable in Kirby's air ride and just like purple the black Kirby matches the carbon spray paint from The Amazing Mirror this next one is definitely a reference to how Meta Knight looks without his mask which is also a costume inside Super Smash Bros ultimate and lastly for Kirby's retro costume it is based on his in-game appearance in Kirby's Adventure next is my channel mascot bandana d as for this blue bandana D costume it matches the player 3 bandana D color in Kirby star allies green BD is very similar to the player 3 color for banana D and Kirby in the Rainbow Curse but with the red bandana instead of the green one yellow BD seems to resemble either key D or a waddle D costume from Kirby Battle Royale this costume could likely be an ssf2 original but it also shares the same color scheme as wopid or wapod from Return to Dreamland as for the other pink bandana D it seems similar to one of the waddle D costumes in Kirby Battle Royale gray bandana D is an original that was Loosely inspired by the toughness waddle D in Kirby Triple Deluxe this next costume is actually based on an unused costume for bandana D and Kirby in the Rainbow Curse which only appeared in promotional artwork with the bandana color swapped the gold costume seems to be based off of the gold waddle D's that appear in Return to Dreamland the next costume I believe is based on the Shadow DDD boss fight with a very similar color scheme in Triple Deluxe and the lastly is BD's retro color which matches the waddle D color scheme in Kirby's Adventure next is Crystal the only character of the Star Fox Trio who has costumes starting off as a reference to how Crystal appears with her Star Fox assault outfit this Crystal color is a reference to the one and only Fox McLeod the next costume is based off of Lucy hair a supported character in Star Fox command and alongside Lucy is Amanda who is slippy's fiance in Star Fox command and the last Starfox command costume is based on Kat Monroe's appearance in that game white crystal is a reference to Fey a new recruit on the Star Fox team in Star Fox 2. and alongside Faye is Miu who also accompanies her in Star Fox 2. I believe that this next costume actually references the color scheme of the demon sniper rifle that appears in Star Fox assault alongside that is another one that I believe references a weapon this one referencing the Homing launcher green Crystal seems to probably be an ssf2 original and lastly is a costume based off of Panther from Team star wolf okay let's move on to Samus first up is a reference to the iconic Fusion suit that appears in Metroid Fusion according to Sakurai himself this costume right here that was in Smash Bros is actually based on the gravity suit in Super Metroid but to be honest it more closely resembles the missile mode Sprite in the original Metroid this suit here is based on the dark suit in Metroid Prime 2 Echoes and alongside that is this costume which represents the light suit again in Metroid Prime 2 Echoes this costume is based off of the gravity suits appearance in Metroid Prime green Samus which appeared inside Super Smash Bros is definitely a smash original costume this color scheme is based off of Dark Samus who became her own playable fighter in Smash ultimate and black and yellow Samus is based on the armor of the power Troopers in Metroid Prime the yellow suit Samus is very similar to the look of the power suit in the in-game Sprite in Super Metroid I originally thought this Samus was based on the Dark Samus costume from Smash ultimate but it's actually Loosely based on the marauder armor from Ratchet deadlocked according to the devs at least and lastly is a retro costume matching how Samus first appeared on the NES Metroid after Samus is well zero suits Samus the dark blue zss is based on her appearance at the end of Metroid Prime 2 Echoes the red outfit is a smash original from Smash for Wii U and 3DS the next costume reflects the appearance of zss at the end of Super Metroid and then we have three CSS costumes that are originally from brawl being pink zss green zss and this sort of purple whitest CSS all of which are smash Originals white Zero Suit Samus is a reference to her outfit in one of the endings for Metroid Fusion yellow zss is likely a Smash Flash original color to give her a yellow outfit her orange colors most likely this is a reference to bad Rayman from the original Rayman this costume is actually confirmed to be a super smash Slash 2 original and Lassie is a purple Rayman that's actually based on Ed from tonic trouble another game published by Ubisoft for our first anime character reference we have Luffy from One Piece first up is a reference to Luffy's outfit in the Marine for it Arc blue Luffy messes his look in the saboti archipelago Arc the darker red with black pants Luffy is based on his appearance in the Annie's Lobby Arc the black and red outfit is based on its design in one piece burning blood this green costume for Luffy is apparently based on his Amazon Lily design but honestly it looks more similar to zoro's design in my opinion there's a few possible references for this purple Luffy but it's likely based on boa Hancock's purple outfit pink Luffy is definitely a reference to doflamingo a major antagonist in the series and this version of Luffy with the white outfit is based on his appearance in the whole cake island arc the Red Hat Luffy matches the same red hair from Shanks this costume is likely a Super Smash Flash 2 original and lastly is a costume from the Thriller bark Arc being luki's nightmare form next up are Naruto's costumes which references own anime Naruto pink Naruto is based on Sakura's design the green outfit reflects the same appearance as rock Lee's outfit blue is based on Sasuke's outfit specifically his original one before the time skip this Naruto costume is a reference to the original color scheme of Naruto pre-time skip of course this is the costume reference for the goat Kakashi the gray Naruto is a reference to Kiba inuzuka one of the supporting characters of the show dark red Naruto is based on matara Uchiha the best villain in the series purple Naruto is reference to Hinata who is Naruto's wife next is a costume reference to boruto's outfit boruto being Naruto's son green-haired Naruto looks like a certain my hero Academia character who may or may not be midoriya AKA Deku and lastly is a costume which resembles the same color scheme as one punch man although it's maybe unintentional and could just be an ssf2 original and the last anime character here is Ichigo first up is a reference to Yori who has a very similar color scheme and is a popular character in Bleach the dark green Ichigo resembles the same as nelio who has a very long name that I'm not even gonna try and pronounce light blue Ichigo is a reference to toshiro a character in Bleach known for their ice powers the orange costume with purple hair is based on yoruichi the pink costume is based on Orihime another sporting character who eventually marries Ichigo the yellow outfit most likely resembles the plushy form of Khan especially with the brown hair white and light blue is reference to Ishida this red costume pretty much matches exactly with the protagonist of the anime Rurouni Kenshin believe it or not this is actually a costume reference to final fantasy's Cloud Strife after that is a costume reference which is most likely based on ichigo's incomplete fullbringer form ichigo's final costume is based on the spirit zongetsu and the final character we'll be looking at is sandbag who doesn't have any references I mean seriously he doesn't have any Source material so he has one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven costumes which are just recolors so yeah definitely not the coolest note to end on but that does conclude all of the references as of June 2023 surely with the Meta Knight reach bright and the next Super Smash Flash update we will see even more references added such as these Chic ones uh so be on the lookout for those before the video ends special thanks to the dev team as well as Elvis ditto for helping fact check some of these references also shout outs to Crazy knot and all the contributors to the ssf2 wiki which was also a ton of help for research if you enjoyed the video consider subscribing because honestly it'd be pretty cool if I hit 100 000 one day and yeah thanks for watching
