[Music] [Applause] [Music] good morning everybody good morning it's jpr and welcome back to another video well it's October now and you know what that means yep it's spooky time and what's spookier than discussing banned episodes of a children's television show The answer is nothing so don't even try to think about it here's the complete history of every banned delayed or canceled episode in the Pokémon anime app parents if if you have kids watching this video this might be a good time to go find something else for them to watch as not everything in here is completely PG you've been warned season one of Pokemon was a wild time and with context it's easy to understand why Pokemon wasn't an international brand at the time so episodes were made strictly for a Japanese audience with more mature themes and jokes than you'd expect from your average cartoon and I don't think any episode embodies this point more than episode 18 Beauty and the beach yep it did not take long for Pokemon to start stacking up controversial episodes this episode involves a myriad of questionable activities including Ash stealing and crashing a boat Misty encountering a very creepy old man a swimsuit pageant also involving Misty who is uh 10 years old yeah we're just going to look past that and the cherry on top of course being James entering the same competition wearing an inflatable bodysuit and um doing this in 200000 3 years after the original episode aired in Japan it was finally dubbed into English and aired as a non-canon special episode only a handful of times although with very revised scripts and with the entire scene of James in the beauty pageant being removed while this episode is technically filler as no major events occur such as new Pokemon being caught or evolving it is notably part of the Pokemon anime's first major arc that spans the Saint Anne sinking island of the giant Pokemon and Tentacruel attacking Port of Vista brutella also debuts in this episode and she appears again briefly in The Following episode when her twin sister NASA crashes into a restaurant so that minor detail of there being too nearly identical characters is never explained in English but that aside Beauty in the Beach's removal from the English episode lineup is almost unnoticeable however the beach Arc drama doesn't end there as the aforementioned episode Tentacool and tentac Cru was also temporarily banned following the events of 911 as the episode depicts the destruction of a city which may be traumatic for many people to relive Kids WB would never air the episode again following the attacks and only after Cartoon Network and Boomerang took over was this episode finally put back into rotation although this episode does notably feature a machine gun making it one of the extremely rare instances where a firearm has made its way into an English episode of Pokémon the same temporary ban also applied to episode 23 the Tower of Terror where Ash and Friends make their way to Lavender Town to catch a ghost Pokemon the only reason this episode is banned was presumably due to the title and nothing else although Ash does briefly die in this episode so that's hype so if you're keeping scored home that means that from 2001 to 2005 three of the first 23 episodes of Pokemon were banned which is kind of nuts to think about Pokemon would remain relatively clean for a little while until the Riders decide to go on another crazy streak a few months later episode 35 the legend of Dratini is the first truly banned episode in the United States this is because the episode prominently features firearms and I don't mean once or twice I mean like the whole episode enough to where're just simply painting over them like four kids do with the rice balls in later Seasons God that was stupid wasn't really an option unfortunately this is when the few important episodes to be banned as this is the episode where Ash caught his 30 Taos in the Safari Zone creating a pretty large continuity error in the English dub so don't worry you didn't have dementia as a kid Ash actually did catch those Tauros you just didn't get to see it and only a few episodes later we have the most infamous one of all episode 38 electric Soldier Porygon this is the only episode of Pokemon to be universally banned it only aired once in Japan and never again the reason is simple this episode s 685 Japanese children to the hospital with seizures yeah that's a pretty good reason for context the episode features Ash and Friends traveling into the digital world to help Nurse Joy figure out why the Pokeball transporter at the Pokemon Center has been malfunctioning during their stay Team Rocket shows up Porygon gets stolen and an antivirus program gets installed that shoots missiles at Ash and Friends thinking they're the cause of the problems Pikachu destroys the missiles with Thunderbolts which leads to this intensely flashing sequence which we're going to slow down for the safety of everybody watching at home the the aftermath of this episode was insane to say the least this incident labeled Pokémon Shock by the Press caused the show to be taken off the air for four entire months delaying the episode's holiday hij Jinks and snow way out officially making them special episodes rather than usual ones in rotation and the Pokemon New Year's Eve special ended up never being aired this was meant to be a 2hour long recap episode that has been lost to time every anime for the next several years would then be forced to include a warning at the start of every episode telling kids to make sure they watch anime in a well lit room and stay away from the TV screen and furthermore Porygon and its evolutionary relatives would all be banned from the Pokémon anime just to avoid bringing attention back to the incident even though Pikachu is the one who sent those kids to the hospital but I guess it would be kind of weird if he just ceased to exist after this episode although Pikachu's goodbye is actually the very next episode which I find kind of funny there is evidence that Porygon 2 and Porygon Z were potentially going to appear in the anime at one point as anime exclusive art of them does exist but timately neither of them have appeared in an episode yet the only appearance of the entire Porygon family since then was in the intro sequence of the 15th movie versus the Sword of Justice where all the Pokémon known at that time were shown well hey since you've made it this far I assume you're enjoying the video so why not subscribe to the channel it's free it makes me feel happy and you get more great videos so everybody wins well jeez after all that I could sure go for a nice wholesome Christmas episode about uh Team Rocket kidnapping Santa Claus and um yeah this episode would also get banned as you can probably expect no not for Santa he's okay I assure you rather for Santa's assistant Pokemon Jinx shortly after this episode air Jinx was criticized as a racist depiction of African-Americans and while the actual origin of jinx's design is a hotly debated topic within the fandom regardless yeah it's not a great look this episode was pulled from rotation in 2000 and has not been on TV or pokemon.com since though it would continue being released on VHS and DVD on present day stream Services whenever this episode is available it's an updated version that features jinx's new purple skin Design This would also impact the next three Band episodes stage fight the Mandarin Island mismatch and the ice cave as all three of these episodes feature Jinx all mention of these episodes existing has been scrubbed from pokemon.com and even in the orange Islands DVD re-releases these episodes are no longer present for reference this band happened in 2013 so those orange Islands episodes did get dumbed they're just no longer available to watch anywhere today the the Mandarin Island mismatch in particular is a big ban episode because this is the episode where Ash meets Elite for laurelai in her only anime appearance though she's referred to as Prima in the English dub allegedly due to issues with her name having too many syllables to fit the lip flap several episodes in jodo and hoen although not banned also had to have any cameos of jinx completely cut out in the English dub late in the hoen and battlef Frontier sagas Jinx would finally be allowed to appear again in the English dub with its updated purple design but Jinx would ultimately be retired from the Pokémon anime after this of all the aforementioned episodes only episode 250 the ice cave would never air in English since Jinx plays a major role in this episode with its original design no less it's likely there were never any plans to dub this episode this episode has only ever aired in Japan South Korea and Taiwan the only other episode to be banned from the jodo era isn't even an episode and it's only banned in Japan oddly enough the Pikachu and Pichu short from the third movie has been removed from all DVD releases and online archives following the arrest of Sakai noro in 2009 who narrated this short hey people don't get arrested very often over there it's a bigger deal than you probably think after the numerous Jinx controversies Pokemon would keep its nose clean for a good long time and as a result most of the baned episodes past this point are the result of tragic events after a destructive earthquake hit Japan in November 2004 the decision was swiftly made to pull episode 101 of the advanced series from television titled shaking Island battle barbach versus whiscash as the title implies this episode would feature these two Pokemon doing an earthquake battle which is not a good idea to put on TV just after a good portion of the country been affected by a major earthquake doesn't take a PhD to figure that one out this episode is mostly unimportant but it getting removed meant that Ash never learned what the suis gym was on screen Minor Detail ever since this episode was canceled the moves magnitude earthquake and fisser became the first moves to be banned from the anime though oddly not bulldo which is rather similar episodes 23 and 24 of the black and white series would suffer the same fate as they were scheduled to air just after the 2011 Japan tsunami and earthquake although the moves themselves aren't used this episode does feature the medanite causing large Tremors in castillia city as Team Rocket and Team Plasma fight to control its power these episodes being banned would mean that the Team Plasma plot had to be delayed and completely Rewritten in the third season the end of the previous episode a Venipede Stampede also had to be altered in the English dub to make it seem like Ash and friends were no longer heading to the desert Resort where these episodes were supposed to take place another episode that was meant to take place in castia City a fishing connoisseur and a fishy competition was also delayed 12 weeks in the English dub all references to castillia City are removed and the ending is changed to show Bianca leaving the group as this was originally going to be part of the arc where she traveled with the main group the only major unexplained events that still occurred following these episodes is the medanite plot being dropped and Jesse and James returning to their old white uniforms the script for these episodes would finally be released to the public in May 2023 confirming that Ash was supposed to encounter Croc Rock again here before catching it and getus was meant to make his anime debut in this Arc there were originally plans for these episodes to be dubbed into English as well as former voice director Tom whan confirmed receiving the scripts only one episode would be delayed in the XY era an undersea place to call home where ash explores the wreckage of a sunken ship right after a fairy sunk off the coast of South Korea wow you guys are either profits of Unfortunate Events or just have really bad timing this episode would eventually air during season 2 of XY but is presented as a flashback as Ash's legender and Frogadier revert to their previous stages this episode also explains how Ash came up with his Rock tomb climb strategy to defeat Grant so there is a slight continuity issue with this episode initially being skipped and finally episode 64 of sun moon be banned outside Japan due to Ash wearing dark face paint in order to play football with a pack of wild pmans obviously doing that over here is a pretty big no no and you'd think after years of dealing with Jinx that Pokemon would be smart enough to avoid doing that but I guess not it's certainly certainly possible that they could have just recolored Ash's face in the dubbed version but seeing as how this is a relatively insignificant filler episode they probably decided it wasn't worth the extra work this episode did have its own English title on Netflix being called a touchdown for the team so that may have been their original plan so while it's a bit surprising that something with as good of a reputation as Pokemon would have this many banned episodes I suppose that when you produce over 12200 episodes some of them are bound to run into issues sooner or later but hey if you enjoyed this video make sure to leave a like And subscribe for more videos just like this one I'll see you guys next time
