the hike to Everest Base Camp has been on our bucket list for years it's one of the most iconic high altitude tracks in the world the classic Everest Base Camp track starts in LCA at 2,800 M then makes its Ascent through remote Sherpa Villages beautiful Pine and roaded dendr and forests and Mountain Landscapes including Amed blam and the kumbu glacier finishing at ever bace camp at 5,365 M the views along the trail are among some of the best in the world one of the biggest challenges of this track is not necessarily your physical fitness level but rather the way your body adjusts to the high altitude and lack of oxygen follow along with us for 15 days as we conquer Four Peaks above 5,000 m and find out why we failed to make it to Everest Bas camp this is our failed attempt to track to Everest Bas camp on our way in the now thr all Security checks and a little Lounge stop yeah now it's a three and a half hour flight from Bangkok to cat V do where we'll get off and go to our little Guest House spend a few days before we fly to Lop CL H Vista [Music] ciao welcome Neal welcome to Neal y we arrived in CMU the busling capital city of Nepal sitting in an average elevation of 1,400 m above sea level it is the first stop truers typically make on their way to the Himalayas we took advantage of the few days spent here climatizing by exploring the sights sounds and local culture of this busy ancient city getting to experience how the 1.5 million people who call it home live life on a daily basis [Music] in order to lessen the chance of delays we decided to take a helicopter for our journey to LCA in hopes of starting our track with no hiccups it is a common occurrence for prop planes to be delayed or canceled for days due to the unpredictable weather at LCA one of the world's most dangerous airports it was quite the sight to arrive and see how short and dangerous the runway really is it definitely leaves no room for error thankfully we made it there safely I don't know if you can hear us or not but about a 45 minute flight helicopter was pretty cool super cool the runway is the shortest thing ever yeah if you're on a plane this is the first time we got to meet our our two Sherpa guides Pang Nuru and Cami Sherpa and our three Sherpa helpers shinuk ratna Kumar and Suz day one hour one minute one so where would ever be from here up that way ever that's the river okay we follow the river we follow the river in ever highway right over here okay our journey started in Luka at an elevation of around 2800 M the weather wasn't ideal but the hike was still beautiful okay Jose we put on the old score attacks she's a little miserable Danielle's bundled up like a little snow Mexican yeah little mits we got her three layers on a toque oh four layers four layers in a two at the gates at the gates at the gates let's go passport office re finally got through kind of sort of we're still waiting tourist police we uh we had to do pictures over there pictures then pay some money they gave us some cards and then take the cards and go to there did the back breaking labor before [Music] but suspension Bridge number one Danielle's favorite yeah see what happens I'm just going to look ahead look ahead don't bounce it Jesus M I will help you may look at that she needs help like an old woman how high is this one so scared of 8,500 M right 8,500 M no that's this is joke I made it sort of next one we go halfway next together and the one after that I will run across by myself yeah that easy peasy lemon squeezy easy peasy lemony squeezy yeah how many suspension bridges uh in the up there is a three four Bridges more in N three or four more okay one the really high one was the one underneath that one but the bridge is a tall high but very strong very strong just like her very strong very short but very strong good girl good girl another song Nepali song okay okay okay somebody tracking somebody rating ra you are a donkey I am a monkey some uhuh that's a good one too yay Namaste you know what we call that a cow smooch kissing [Laughter] cousins hear that mister that's your cousin she gave you a smooch for these guys it's the Corral the old Saloon here everyone Corrals up their uh y Yaks for the night home sweet home day won lunch when we're getting a little spoiled they brought a whole big plate of rice I'm still eating the soup which is really actually good as well it's Mr Noodle so it's great my friend loves a little Mr Noodle so what are we learning about these guys it's not actually a yak it's a job key okay and a job key is a mix between a yak and a cow because Yaks can't really go very well below certain elevations we're told so they bred them um to create a job key and that's what these are well it's about4 after 8 in the morning and we starting out we're heading to wherever it was that I said at breakfast I don't remember what it's called but somewhere in between here and ah yaku nampi yeah it's uh we're at 2500 M it's May the 2nd uh and it's not raining so we're H we're happy that's a good thing and we're off day two day two uh we were told we're walking too fast we're walking so slow we're walking ridiculously slow like just like 45 minutes to a kilometer yeah I think let me check here we are That's How Far We've gone in that long so for us this is it's very hard to walk this slow Cammy told us it's a competition now so what's the competition who can walk the slowest oh yeah between us three oh okay Tammy already went to Catman doing back so he lost competion so on this we walk to the left again yeah left we have to going up left hand come back right hand that means pray good luck for the Buddhist culture whatever we think good success yes the prayer you say every time you spin the wheel yeah how does it go again H that is [Music] oh this is Danielle's second uh bridge I one she's doing it second bridge for the trail yeah probably the smallest of them all but that one was definitely not 100% strong the like things were going like this when you step on them no it's a cable Bridge the metal was going like this oh my goodness we stopped at Herman helmer's German bakery and pacting for our usual honey lemon ginger tea and the best donuts along the trail this Bakery is a must stop for anyone with a sweet tooth offering freshly baked pastries and cakes for sugar craving trekers so we got a chocolate donut some pot of tea that she thought was a good idea and apple strudel lemon ginger honey tea ginger honey SE like that an apple got a little bit of uh beach volleyball down there it's one of the many shops along the Route you're everywhere get yourself anything some little jeans get yourself some little jeans Snickers they love their Snickers everywhere lots of fanta they love Fanta Pringles so there's these little cute guys everywhere but we were pretty told with them not to feed them specifically and even pay attention to them just for the simple fact that they will then follow you for long periods of time and follow you into other dogs territories and then they get attacked so it's the border of the national park Tammy take care of us took care of us we're good right okay yeah 100% good 100% good okay now we're going into the park Bridge number Bridge number five on the trail look at how she walks she walks like a little teapot short and stout but there's the view of bridge number five up the valley the little teapot in the back there she's doing it we're done for the day yeah Nana Lodge it's about 3:00 in the afternoon started at about 8:00 had a couple good breaks day two trkking complete pretty good yeah here's our another one of our little buddies and what did we order for dinner again um we ordered fried Momo this time yeah Zach's favorite Momo I love the Momo um and chicken curry chicken D so that's our chicken our dinner for tonight well yeah she's all snuggled up ready for bed it is what 7:30 going to bed at 7:30 we got to cross the super high bridge tomorrow yeah I'm not looking for to that not looking forward to that so super high bridge tomorrow oh this is the end of day two give me a smooch you got your own smooches good night good night we woke up on day three in jerus Al at approximately 2,950 M and started our hike to Nai Bazaar located at around 3,440 M today was the day that we crossed the Hillary Bridge a 459 ft long suspension bridge that sits 410 ft above the dude Koshi River the white colored River the rain finally stopped for us and we enjoyed blue skies we even broke a sweat as we pushed the pace a bit with our Sherpa Cami once in Nai we would be spending two nights there to let our bodies acclimatize to the increase in elevation morning butter and jam honey butter and jam I got fried eggs and toast so we've kind of decided to put our stickers everywhere we're staying to get our seal of approval you see our sticker when you come through you know we stayed here and you know we liked it two snails app two snails up why remember snails on Everest oh yeah we snails on Everest yeah Cho Chico She these are our jockeys job Keys job Keys uh do they have names tick tick TI chuu fa good job boys we buy them drinks moldo do you want a beer we get you a beer buddy beautiful views up the trail this morning it's clear it's crisp they said we're going to have to wear masks today because of how dusty it really is it's not only the trail dust you have to worry about but also a lot of animal poops so realistically you're breathing in the dust and the animal poop so you really want to wear a mask but we locked out with that rain those past few days and it's the first glimpse of death Bridge foric there's the old one there's the new one old one old one 50% strong new one 100% strong la la la okay this is the big bridge for Danielle yeah I just want to get it over with so we're going to go she wants to get it over with okay so how are you feeling though uh I'm feeling okay right now I'm just focusing on the other side how many met up 300 M up 500 M down yeah 300 yeah 300 M up forward she just wants to look forward no it's okay I don't know if you can really see down through there's the old bridge down there this where the two two rivers meet actually too this one over here comes they say from Tibet and the one we're crossing over up through here comes from Everest so how was it it was good Cammy and I sung songs the whole way across down hoodie chicken C be happy why not coconut easyy lemonque so she did it I did it my five yeah I didn't look down once all right high five five five yeah thank you it's first time we really got our heart rates up good broken a good sweat wow you guys are very tough very tough strong this like Marathon you know yeah I don't know do you how a p Nepal how this is strong oh I done good good Canadian legs oh my God we arrived in Nai just before lunch planning to rest and acclimatize here for the next two nights nshi is located at approximately 3,440 M at its lowest point and is considered the gateway to the Himalayas it is a major stopping point for trekking groups and those climbing in the area for lunch we ate at the infamous Sherpa Arista where we had milk tea hummus and even a slice of home with a delicious ham and pineapple pizza definitely recommend this spot if you're passing through napi as it was one of the best meals we had on the trip it's actually pretty good better in some pieces of pizza is up at at home for sure actually it's good this is a room in the old Nami hotel for the night yeah it's nicest hotel in Nai Bazaar well I think so anyway we've kind of already settled in settled a little bit cuz we were uh it it's got pretty chilly fast but look we got a full and a hot shower we had a hot shower hot shower yeah we had a nice hot shower but it's kind of deling luxury what is this I don't know somebody wrote something on the window no there was a little welcome present steamed it up and there's our there's our view see the clouds just rolled in we had a nice sunny day right view from our room 6 p.m. we got to go down for dinner now yeah let's go get some dinner so we're at the point of the trip where we're checking our uh2 levels our show so mine keeps going up and down kind of on a little bit of a recovery mode from today's push but for the record right now after some deep breathing that's what I'm at uh maybe we'll check Danielle's real quick again we can't check mine because I have mine when we did my reading was jumping all over the place my oxygen was still high but um my heart rate was like jumping from 60s to 90 but I didn't feel like that anyway we Googled it and I have black gel nail polish on my fingers so affects the reading but on the Apple watch it said my oxygen levels was still mid99s and my heart rate was in the 60s so I'm doing good little snuggle bug's already snuggle bugged in I'm waiting for you to get in bed it's 8:30 now bedtime night three great day you can see your breath in the room though yeah it's cold out there it's cold out there come get in bed yeah uh night from namshi on our rest day we woke up to partially clear skies but a chilly morning we had a delicious breakfast of musle and eggs before heading out on an climatization hike to a Viewpoint in the mountains behind Nami unfortunately Mother Nature had its own plans and the clouds rolled in before we made it to the Viewpoint we did get the chance to hear another one of cammy's trekking Tunes though more okay yeah hey good looking what guys cooking how about cooking something with me great nepes song We also got to check out the Everest Museum where we got to see what a traditional Sherpa home looks like as well as view various climbing stories and Relics from Years Gone by that afternoon we found the last post office along the trail and mailed a postcard home we also stopped for drinks at the world's highest Irish Pub where Captain Canada left a little piece of Canadian art on their wall it's going to get a guides to Adventure seal of approval for uh [Music] beer what happen it's the altitude theud but either way you know what to do when you see our sticker go in there get in there send us a [Music] picture we woke up on day five to crystal clear skies and sunshine we hoped it would remain this way as today would be our first opportunity to get an unobstructed view of Everest up the kumu valley we had a delicious breakfast of mule with yogurt and an omelet before heading out on our way to Kum Jong so Danielle thought it'd be wise to purchase a Yak Bell so we're going to be listening to this they're looking at me like I'm one of theirs yeah so she's going to go say hi to our our team morning do you see what she did look yeah see up yeah she got the Bell so now the job key is going to attack her no I'm their friends or we put more bags on her she can carry three bags c c work 10:30 we left at about 830 I think it's day five day five uh you know we're 2 km in but we spent an hour and 20 minutes to do those two kilometers yeah but the views are [ __ ] yeah that too I mean you got to stop and like look at this guy look at this guy just everywhere it's literally 360 how you feeling good how are you feeling pretty good what are these things called again stupas or something yeah stupa oh man nice deep breath there it is back here should be honest our quick day brought us into Kum Jung around lunchtime a town often overlooked by trekers it is home to the Edmond Hillary School and the kundi hospital for lunch we retreated to some delicious Sherpa stew prepared by a local artist and his family and afterwards had a chance encounter with our first Wildlife on the track a Himalayan tar similar to a mountain goat after lunch we got the deluxe tour of the Edmund Hillary school from our Sherpa helper dangu who attended the school from grades 8 to 10 the school was founded in 1961 by Sir Edmund Hillary the first person to Summit Mount Everest it provides the educ ation and Healthcare Services to the local Sherpa Community while promoting education and sustainable development in the region honoring Hillary's commitment to improving the lives of the sherpa people we also got some extra exercise in with some of the local students thank you guys go give it to the kids see thein the din thank you thank you you're welcome here's our room we got home private washroom again and guess what we got separate beds no no designer sheets tonight wo this is day five dinner in Kum Jang Kum Jang Kum trying potato fried Momos today haven't had these yet no it'll probably be like a perogi we're hoping like a peri we'll eat up go to bed and go to bed as usual be in bed by 7 yeah 8 7:30 it's 6:30 right now 8:00 for sure we'll be asleep we'll be in bed by8 day six we left Kum Jung at 3,790 M to track 8.4 km to DEET located at 3,820 M we had a bunch of interesting animal encounters during the day from the fog horn cow to our first few of a yak and the Elusive and dangered Himalayan musketeer along the way we stopped at the monastery and the bakery in tenb getting into DEET early to guess what another double bedow good morning good morning day six day six we were just talking about how uh if you all the tea houses they have things that help you without to just naturally to eat like lemon tea is a diuretic helps you pee gets all the bad things out of your system and then ginger in the tea helps settle your tummy cuz sometimes when you get up to higher elevations your stomach feels kind of nauseous and yucky um and garlic soup helps with altitude uh sickness and different things like helps you to not feel like that too and they have lots of garlic soup at every tea house so eat those things and all there's no fog here I people are trying to sleep would you calm down adios amigos yeah I know on the road again Cammy yes please you're welcome so now we are go to today we go to deuch and uh so we see the tangu and the Buddhist Monastery okay and I hope you guys like it there what if we don't like it um then I will uh I will take to beach okay I like I always like the beach we tried the potato Momo yesterday for the first time and they were really good oh nice and potato is like one of the most popular thing we grow in the kumu or the down area and we have a many dishes of the potato yeah we reached the Tango Monastery at an elevation of 3,875 M around lunchtime we really enjoyed the colorful Buddhist paintings and sculptures set against a backdrop of mountains out of respect we didn't film while inside the monastery however we did get to spin a large prayer wheel with one of the monks outside we stopped at the bakery for a warm brownie tea and some awesome Mountain views arriving at the rivendale lodge in deos in the early afternoon Cammy checked us into our luxurious Suite equipped with a warm shower and a double bed we finished the day off with another large plate of dobot while Captain Canada enjoyed a plate of plain boiled potatoes pretty slick there toots how you peel potato it sure is day seven we left AET located at 3,820 M to trk about 10 km to fet located at 4,731 M we had another blueb bird day and crossed our last suspension bridge of the trip I think I may have even conquered my fear of heights well at least of suspension bridges as we get higher the wind really comes up and is very cold causing our noses to not stop running we are spending two nights in feret to allow our bodies to adjust to the increase in altitude luckily Camy helped push our beds together so we could keep toasty while we sleep breakfast this morning there's Everest way up there this is a beautiful day again once you get in the sunshine it's nice and warm it is warmer in the sun 7:30 can't wait for my full body massage that Zach's going to give to me tonight that one's ever right there right with the clouds coming over top of it uhhuh yeah muste cammy's tired um I'm not really tired but a little bit okay not too much yeah but uh is is uh so far so good and hey good looking yes what you guys cooking yes how about you cooking something with me yes thank you okay welcome guys we're on the trail everything by hand chisel shovel thck oh yeah you ready what ready there let go us no us no us here high five no high five he doesn't like me oh she likes me didn't like me at all well I made it here 9 just over 9 km and uh about 3 hours 15 minutes walking time phoh shet is a very small town very small they walked to the end of it in like two minutes two minutes there's a Snicker Hall and half a dozen hotels a bunch of job key poop right here they dry it all out so they dry all out the poop and they burn it like bricketts we're signing off we might go check out the river over there but it's cold it is cold day eight was a rest day in feret allowing our bodies to adjust to the increase in altitude as we jumped up almost 1,000 M from our last stop to 4,731 m today we broke away from the group with Cammy taking us up to nashan Peak which turned out to be the first of Four Peaks we climbed on this track that are over 5,000 m it's time to get up and get up get up come back to bed we're getting that she doesn't know what she's doing day yes I do day eight I day at breakfast oatmeal apple get and lemon ginger tea so Danielle's still having a little what runny poops little trouble with the old uh tummy so we've been trying to rule things out but it could just be altitude hey you said you got to pay the price of the altitude Gods if you want to play up in the mountains and here we are now we're into the Glory Days we got uh one rest day here and then uh 3 days of this is what we came all this way for some hard hiking and some great views yeah rest Day hike I stepped in the biggest cow pad we've climbed up from the valley floor you know this mountain name amadam oh that's amadam that is wow different yeah close and you see down there is T and no k sorry and is behind that one okay and behind that one and then is and L peek and this is the Cami okay hi Camy yeah Namaste nice to meet you you guys are very very strong wow big mus and very strong and easy for me yes okay okay follow me follow you so we're at about 44 100 m right now he going to try and push us up to this up this Ridge a bit and see how we feel about 4600 M so definitely the highest I've ever been definitely the highest Daniel's ever been we're all breathing a little hard now we reached the summit of nakan peak in a little over 2 hours from fet it was the first time in our lives that either of us had been above 5,000 m and we definitely felt the difference in altitude being that highy good looking you got C Day nine omelets and eggs and Captain's having porridge day 10 C have porish yeah day 11 day 11 we're going to stick a sticker here at the edce lodge edce parache parishe um they have a hot shower they have nice rooms good food so come find the sticker take a picture send it to us and maybe you'll get something yeah starting day nine starting day nine 4200 M yeah May 9th fet to LA [Music] I said it for you so you didn't have to remember about 4 hours [Applause] maybe yeah Little River Crossing there yeah a little river crossing we're both a little dizzy yeah a little dizzy a little dizzy what's the elevation uh I don't know what the elevation is the H of Lu but we're at 46 46 46 4600 M man are we tired today first rest stop for today about almost 2 hours in an hour and 50 minutes just over 4 and 12 km we arrived at TLA pass Memorial an area dedicated to commemorating climbers and Mountaineers who lost their lives on Everest it features a collection of stone monuments and act bearing the names and details of climbers who perished on Everest it serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges and risks associated with high altitude mountaineering R labush yeah just over 5,000 m is this 5 5,000 m there something that so we're sleeping tonight where we climbed to yesterday we'll same Heights same right same elevations and we're pretty exhausted I just feel lightheaded have some lunch yeah kick offer Dusty boots yeah have a little snuggle probably not oh there's a beach look Camy you made a beach for us this this is where we stay yeah Himalayan Echo Resort we made it into a room it's actually probably the warmest room we've had I'm guessing just because of the Skylight and the sun coming in day 10 it's very very very very cold we're not doing base camp today but we still might try to do it actually um we'll explain more when we get outside of the meat locker of uh cafeteria that we're in right now and it's not this cold okay but day 10 it's freezing yeah it's pretty cold we'll explain when we get out into the sunshine we look really well rested too so well rested um lot change the plans supposed to go to base camp might not just going to Calabar for sure orp for sure uh we might go see this pyramid research station thing I think we're doing that for sure and then we might do base camp after yeah we might do a push to base camp today too or the plan will be to do it tomorrow morning that's where we're headed we wanted to see we always like to see things where no one else is high altitude Science and Technology Research Center 50 5,50 m in elevation this is the pyramid we weren't allowed to uh record inside but it was pretty interesting yeah down there yeah Kum GL so it's our first view of a ever space camp if you can see there's little orange dots they all the little tents it's very busy yeah so which one's Everest Everest is a little behind we don't see it right now maybe almost gr sh we see the Everest okay don't make R we see the Everest okay okay I will show you okay I'll run ahead yeah yeah still making our way to sh right the elevation not too bad when you're going like in a flat line you can kind of get it keep a good Pace it is pretty damn cold still yeah haven't really warmed up at all today even even moving it's cold Che sh yes stay here tonight local noodle soup and shipper stew trying to make it a I spacee camp and the top of uh calar calar today because we'd have to do them tomorrow and tomorrow is already at least an over 15 km day from here to G up to dush so we'll just have to fit it all in today just leing old gorbage heading up this Ridge here here they say to get the best views of Everest possible we're going to try and make it the base camp tonight too yeah we'll see how this goes yeah that's the valley that we're going way back down tomorrow as far as the eye can see we're going tomorrow we're at the highest we've ever been about 5300 M we're tired very tired we made it to the top of cipar the highest elevation of our trip sitting at 5,650 M although it was very cold and super windy the sky stayed clear giving us a perfect unobstructed view of Everest and base camp below well it's day 11 we were supposed to go to base camp this morning but uh the condition of uh some people uh the safety of the porters uh and the length of the trip that we have to take today which is from here to lab ding ding sorry it's quite far so um yeah it's been called off little disappointing because we are about 3 kmet away from base camp it's just around that corner over there does look like it might be socked in a bit um but it was kind of on our list to check off and yeah we'll just I guess have to make another trip back so we got taken to the the sign and there she is down that Valley again the clouds did roll in but that doesn't really mean much we would have gone thought we didn't we went to Calipari yesterday which is over 5600 M higher than base camp and we had a beautiful view but because of that people got sick and yeah our leader guide leader um is helicoptering back to a different Hotel today and yeah just made the decision that he doesn't think it's a good idea for everybody to go to for the people that wanted to go to base camp and then um do a long trk back to ding B today we could have done it but um there's other people in the group that probably couldn't have done it and would have been putting their Health at risk so he made the call that nobody's going to do it so it's a little disappointing because that's kind of the reason we came the view yesterday was beautiful and we got to a higher altitude than what we would have at base camp but it would have been cool to go and see base camp and I don't know talk to some of the people that are there and are going to be summiting soon so yeah but I don't know things happen for a reason and maybe we weren't meant to be there right now so we got to come back yeah but she was just around that corner yeah not very far we could run there but we're not allowed it's not that we're not allowed it's that it's just it's made the decision as the safety of everyone um it's not that close it's still about three and a half kilomet so return trip you know it's six another 6K added to our uh we got about a 14k day today hike to where we're stay um so yeah it's just long at this elevation it never really feels like you know that long until you start moving but when you start moving takes the breath away out yeah it's we are pretty high app we're over 5,100 meters right now so that's the highest uh we were been at until a few days ago so I don't know here we are there's there space camp it's breakfast time the clouds keep rolling in so it's really good we got up there yesterday and got the nice views because this morning when we saw groups going up that little antill at 4 this morning to get the views it's looking like they didn't get the views not that that we got yesterday anyway and who knows maybe we would have got the base camp and it would have been this and we wouldn't have seen much anyway I don't know everything happens for a reason we got some other good climbs we're going to do the rest of this trip so we'll uh you know post those and hopefully we'll uh have some awesome views too and some more Good Times definitely yeah with base camp out of the picture and the kumala path impassible due to heavy snow we headed back down the valley to dingbo for the night the next day we made our way to Chang where we got the opportunity to check off two more 5,000 plus meter hikes Island Peak base camp and chikung R the weather wasn't looking very promising when we arrived in shikang so the decision was made to head for Island Peak base camp first the 12 1/2 km round trip Pike was another beautiful one but by late afternoon while we were on our way back the weather turned and temperatures dropped fast as a heavy blanket of clouds rolled in we spent the night in Chang hoping for clearer skies in the morning and as luck would have it we got them our bodies and Minds were pretty exhausted after 13 days in the mountains but we were able to push ourselves to reach the top of Chung R located at 5,400 M we can't express how satisfying and exciting our trip in the himay as was we are so thankful to Ian Camy diang de and everyone else at Sherpa encounters for providing us with an experience of a lifetime it is a trip that we will never forget and we can't wait to go back the Himalayan Mountains and the sherpa people have found a special place in our hearts guys very much thank everybody thank you for all the help very very much thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you D thank you but I'm not joking as today I'm feel not tired but today I'm tired coffe sing C he'll strap you to jumy [Laughter] IDE up here in the Himalayas nothing quite protects me like neina can USA people see I'm put hour shower I can't wait until we can sleep in the same bed again I can't wait either to dance does he like to drink what's the one drink he like the whiskey the whiskey it up I like big bottle of Black Label Black Label oh jeez somebody taking cammy's not happy with us today I know I'm happy I'm happy why not come on okay why not if I'm not happy I I don't join with us not not together you know okay [Music] [Music]
