say hello to all of the people uh who have tuned in to smalls live this afternoon thank you very much for watching our music and i'd like to mention that this is concert number 50. this is our 50th concert in a row that we've done live from small since the pandemic has closed us down oh it's a friend of mine here and so we endeavored to get musicians working again creating revenue for them and also of course funds to keep the space in our possession by paying the rent and that's been our get the cats working again fund and that's uh kind of been successful we we funded june and we funded july and now we funded august and so we have a patrons of our foundation the smalls live foundation who are contributing to uh sponsor bands to perform from the club and we're gonna try to our best to just uh stay afloat here until uh we do get the option to start running again for uh the people again open our doors so if you're interested in sponsoring a banner and some information about that why don't you email us foundation smallslive.com and uh just to let you know we are a not-for-profit 5013c here in new york i'd like to mention that today's show has been sponsored by the catskill jazz factory under the direction of piers playfair good friend and patron of our club we thank him for today and that's okay that's okay that's budding drummer but let me introduce you to the members of the trio we have ben street on the base now she waits playing the drums and it's our great pleasure to have ethan iverson playing the piano enjoy the music thank you for listening terrific uh welcome all of you out there watching these are two of my favorite musicians i regard them as masters truly creative innovative personal musicians and i originally got them to agree to this set by saying we'll just play tunes but then as all the gigs for 2020 cancelled i got a little more ambitious i thought maybe this is the last trio gig i'll ever play who knows so i actually wrote a suite of original music um that i'm really looking forward to hearing how they uh interpret it today i know it's gonna be great uh the first piece is technically acceptable [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] do [Music] foreign [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] do [Music] so [Music] [Music] thank you thank you very much for your enthusiastic applause all over the world that's the incredible sheet weights on drums the marvelous ben street on base i'm ethan iverson we're here streaming from smalls this afternoon playing some original music that was technically acceptable and we're going to continue with the blues in g called praise will travel so so do [Music] do [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Applause] [Applause] so [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] do [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] so [Applause] [Music] do [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] too [Music] so [Music] so [Music] do [Music] [Music] do [Music] do [Music] do [Music] thank you again i must say it feels like we're playing a gig down here even though uh we just have piers and heroku in the audience and nobody else is here but it's we feel you out there internet lawyers we know you're out there checking us out and we appreciate that very much this is a again the 50th 50th concert at smalls since the start of uh kovid and it really means something to the community that there are gigs happening here in the afternoon and again tonight is uh co-sponsored by smalls and the catskill jazz factory and piers play fair it's very cool and it's going to keep going we were talking to spike it's there's no end in sight for smalls for just hanging on he called it a hail mary which is about right and yes it's a sad truism that you don't always get what you want in this life and i wrote a song about that very sentiment this is called you will never be mine [Music] [Music] so [Music] do [Music] so [Music] do do [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] do [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] do [Applause] [Music] [Applause] do [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] this next one is at the bells and modeling [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] do [Music] do [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] to [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] hey now sheet weights on drums incredible bend street on base incredible when i play a kind of a complex cedar walton style diminished harmony on b flat seven ben plays an a that's what i'm talking about right here tonight it's smalls that's what i'm talking about that's fantastic uh this next one uh great composer johnny mandel passed away and i thought well let me let me try to write a sort of swing tune a little bit in the johnny mandel tradition and so this is him to the old i'll play along [Music] so [Music] so [Music] do [Music] do [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] do [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] do [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] do [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] him of the old i think we're gonna mix it up and i see we're actually running quite uh quickly these we're going through these songs in a nice smooth fashion which means we'll add in a couple of uh numbers perhaps probably play um something a little faster i play confirmation changes but maybe in like an e flat [Music] do um [Music] so [Music] my [Music] do [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] do [Music] so [Music] so [Music] do [Music] do [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] now she waits ben street we all do things we regret this next piece is called i confess [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] we've got another swinging number for you this is uh i was walking in the park and this just came to me this idea and we'll see we'll see how this goes it's called hand and hand [Music] so [Music] do [Music] do [Music] so [Music] do [Music] so [Music] my [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] do [Music] [Music] so [Music] do [Music] hand in hand we're going to add in another bonus number now uh to fill out the set uh thinking of johnny mandel his most famous song was the shadow of your smile benji feel up for a shout out your smile indeed um there's a nice story about this song for the uh for those that love the jazz stories in the mid-60s the jazz musicians were beginning to lose their natural easy relationship to popular music so if there was a song from a movie or a show that seemed like it could fit the style everyone got excited about it and uh this song by johnny mandel was from a sort of a mediocre film frankly called the sandpiper but it was a hit song almost instantly and probably 20 or 30 of the most iconic incredible jazz musicians all recorded the song almost immediately like by 67 or something there was 20 or 30 amazing jazz renditions of the song almost the first was one by eddie harris on the classic record with cedar walton ron carter and billy higgins and ron carr tells the story that he was working in boston he got the call from eddie harris oh let's do a record date on monday but i need a chart for the new song so ron went to the movies and transcribed the song from the silver screen and then brought in the chart for everybody to play at the session um they played it in like a swinging style i think we'll uh we'll try for something a little more evocative two choruses pretty straight thank you johnny mandel [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] um this next piece it's the last of the official set we might play a quick encore afterwards um something that was really written for this gig like it couldn't have been more written for this gig to the extent that i i called it smalls was there something i didn't leave out of tune did i no darn it i thought there was maybe one more tune in that pile uh this is called small so that's the incredible nashik weights on drums the incredible ben street on base and this is some rhythm changes [Music] so [Music] do [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] do [Music] [Music] do [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] so [Music] do [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] do [Music] so [Music] do [Music] do [Music] we're going to do uh one more that was small that was the technical ending of the set originals but uh it's been just flown by here my eight uh new compositions so um nash you wanna call one oh man did we played that one horror silva today you remember yeah you're calling an obscure silver twin wow but you know what we could do we could do a song for my father which we recorded i wish with ron carter um and we play a version of a song from my father on there so yeah we'll do that right now why not that's a good idea good good idea what was the name of the one we played though that's right sweet sweetie d sweet sweetie d i this is the hardest darn horror silver units i never could learn the form i don't have to have the chart on the bandstand because it turns around in the most awkward space but i like your style calling that on me now she that's uh yeah i thought you were because i know the type of person you are you feel like you like those arcane obscures my father [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so so [Music] [Applause] so [Music] so [Music] what a great set but the amazing ethan iverson and this wonderful trio thank you so much for listening tomorrow we have the great sasha perry coming up around 5 p.m thank you to the catskill jazz factory for supporting uh swan's jazz club and of course sponsoring this set um
