your phone can be an indispensable tool while traveling internationally but how do you ensure that you actually have service while you're abroad I've tried various ways to stay connected while traveling from relying only on Wi-Fi which is very inconvenient to paying daily fees with my home carrier which is really expensive and I felt like my options were always going to be either inconvenient or expensive until I heard about eims now eims are kind of like physical SIM cards you know those little chip things we used to put into our phones except they're virtual or digital the E stands for embedded but I feel like that's an easier way to explain it you don't have to take anything out or put anything in you simply purchase an eim online install it and then when you land in a new country you immediately connect to a local cell network without having to go search for a SIM card or take something out or put it in now in previous videos I've explained to you why Olaf has been my eim of choice and many of you asked on that video for me to give you an installation guide and so in this video I'm going to show you start to finish how to buy install and activate an olly eim on your iPhone I've gone ahead and put time codes on the screen for each of those separate areas if you want to skip around the process is generally easy but there are some specific nuances that you'll want to pay attention to like is your phone even eim compatible olly has a huge list of compatible devices on their site I'm showing them on the screen right now but if you don't want to read a wall of text let me just say if you're an iPhone user all the compatible iPhones are the ones that come after the iPhone x is it x 10 I was never really sure but that's not enough the phone also needs to be unlocked if it's not you'll need to get your carrier to unlock it being locked essentially means that it only works with your home carrier and we want it to be able to work with other carriers now if your phone is compatible what that means is actually has what's called dual SIM technology or two slots for SIM cards and this means that you don't have to get rid of your home carrier at all you're simply able to add a second one later I'll explain how to keep your home carrier but make sure you aren't charged for it while traveling Okay so we've got an unlocked compatible phone let's secure an eim you want to do this before your trip we can install it later but be sure to do this before the trip very important something else that you want do before your trip is make sure your iPhone is updated to the latest operating system you'll thank me later then you want to download the Olaf app on your device we can use this or olly.com to shop for the eim we need search for the country that you want coverage for and when picking your plan pay attention to what you're getting most destinations Olaf fly offers come with unlimited data but not all some include tethering or hotspots and some don't you just want to read what's available and in my experience olly.com will have more robust info on the technical specs of specific plans in preparing for this video I chatted with the Olaf team and they let me know that far more of their destinations are now going to offer tethering and hotspots which is huge news because I know many of you have been looking for that you can also search by region if you're doing any country hopping for example let's say you're taking a trip to Croatia Slovenia and Northern Italy instead of buying plans for each of those places consider just getting Olaf's Europe plan which offers services in over 32 European countries and reminder if you use the code away together you'll get 5% off your purchase check out and boom you'll be emailed and Whata your new eims and they'll be saved in the my eims area of the Olaf app okay I'm going to walk you through the installation process now you can wait until you arrive in the country you're headed to to install your eim but you will need a stable Wi-Fi connection to actually do it whatever you do don't activate your eim until you arrive now there's three different ways to install your eim automatic QR code and manual I'm going to explain each once you arrive and you're connected to the Wi-Fi open the Olaf app the Olaf app will pre-select the most suitable installation method based on your device and your iOS version let's talk about automatic first cuz this is the easiest one this one is only only going to work if you have iOS 17.4 or higher that's why I told you to update your iOS earlier if you're running 17.4 or higher the olly app should detect that and it's going to automatically recommend the automatic installation you'll tap install and activate click continue to begin the installation and then click continue again on the last screen okay installation option number two is QR code if you can't do an automatic install or if it's not working use the QR code that Olaf sent you when you purchased your eim it should be in your email you have a few scan options go to settings cellular add eim use QR code and then scan the code that olly sent you either from another device a printed copy or from a screenshot of the QR code saved in your photos installation option number three is manual finally if automatic or QR codes don't work you can install manually it's not hard there's just some copying and pasting involved you'll go to settings cellular add eim use QR code and then enter details manually then you're going to copy and paste in the smdp address and the activation code that olly sent you okay that covers installation now let's talk about activation remember you don't want to activate until you've arrived at your destination click continue to activate if your plan doesn't include calls keep your default line primary and iMessage and FaceTime primary and then choose olly for cellular data if it does include calls make Olaf your default line and then for iMessage and FaceTime choose Olaf if you want to use it for that purpose and now let's label it Olaf make Olaf the default for cellular data and then unless you want to switch between your two Sims turn off roaming for your home line turn off data switching enable the Olaf line and turn on roaming of the Olaf eim verify your connection and check your signal strength and sure that you have at least one signal bar now something isn't working you can chat with olly support via WhatsApp and they can walk you through step by step on how to get things working and to make sure all your settings are correct my first ever time using Olaf in Vienna Austria I messed up a setting somewhere and I couldn't figure out what I had done they were patient and very methodical and helping me get it all figured out I really hope this video was helpful to you and let us know in the comments below where you're traveling thanks to olly for sponsoring this video thank you for watching happy travels
