God I can't wait to get this
Iron Man was my first Dolphy album, and one of the first 20 jazz CD's I ever owned (back around 1989 or so). I know Out To Lunch is generally thought of as Dolphy's magnum opus (and pretty deservedly so) -- but Iron Man will always be my favorite Dolphy album.
And oddly enough, though I've probably heard it 30 times over the years, I never picked up it's companion Conversations -- so there's a LOT of this new expanded set that I've never listened to as often, or as closely.
Haven't ordered it yet, but I'm sure I'll get it in the next 4-6 weeks. It's about time this material was given the deluxe treatment, and I hear the nearly 100-page liners are phenomenal.
AND, of course, my beloved Woody Shaw is on some of this too, back when he was only 19 years old. Even though it was one of the very first jazz albums I ever owned, it's hard to imagine Eric Dolphy and Woody Shaw intersecting, since Dolphy died so early (in '64).
I'm pretty sure that Iron Man was actually Woody Shaw's very earliest recording, iirc.
