hello everybody get off my long cards I'm Dan welcome in this is episode 56 and the topic today is uh the Cleveland site as a national and I've been watching a lot of videos as we're getting closer to the National we're just about turning the calendar into July um once we do then we're about three and a half weeks away from the national which is hard to believe you know you kind of looked forward to this all year and then it's here and you go there and then it's gone it's that's kind of the way it happens every year so um today I want to talk about Cleveland as a site for the national it seems to me that there's some people online that are not big fans of Cleveland and so usually that's my job is to complain about this type of stuff but I'm not going to complain about Cleveland uh I like Cleveland as a site uh I've been to Cleveland twice and I'm going to talk about some of the benefits of Cleveland as a site I'll talk about what some of the you know some of the haters say about Cleveland and you know they're entitled their own opinion but I I just kind of think that Cleveland's a really nice place to to be for this show and I I hope that they do it there once in a while not that they have to do it there every year but it's not a bad site especially for someone like me that lives in the midwest like I understand if you live on either of the coasts you know maybe you want to go to a city that's got a little you know maybe you want to go to a site that has a little more you know pizzazz around it um but as a person like me that I just like the show itself I'm I'm perfectly fine with where it's at so um let's talk a little bit about the complaints that people have about the national and Cleveland uh I tend to think that those complaints are pretty superficial they're pretty superficial you know people will talk about oh the Wi-Fi is kind of spotty out there um if you've never been to the Cleveland National The IX Cent where they have this is kind of out in the middle of nowhere and uh Wi-Fi can be a little bit spotty there but the remedy to that is you know if there's cards that you are looking for do a little research pre-national know the comps you know people use their phone usually for comps that's why they want Wi-Fi know the comps going in especially for bigger cards okay if you're going to drop $1,000 on a card let's say know what the comps are before you go to the show you know are the you okay the comps on this card about 700 bucks you know then you you know put it use the notes app on your phone or whatever you do for it and so you have it there at your fingertips even if the Wi-Fi is bad so problem solved um you know it is the The IX Center I will admit is kind of out in the middle of nowhere uh for for some people they don't like it because you know they want their hotel right by the the national and you know last year we had a great Hotel in Chicago that literally we walked across the street and uh could go to the National and that was nice don't get me wrong but that's that's kind of rare it's kind of rare to have that you know as your um as your possibilities it it doesn't always happen um the the negative of that if you have all these buildings around the national is that CRA traffic is crazy you know Chicago is nice but the traffic is just murderous it's murderous and you got to pay tolls to get there and you know when we go to Cleveland we don't have to deal with any of that stuff um the traffic there is so much less like we generally we don't drive to the National from our hotel but we could and it wouldn't be that big of a deal you know we would have to fight through a half hour of traffic just to get there we take a couple side streets and we'd be there all right so it's not it's not terrible some people complain at the national that prices are always too high there's always people that complain about this I tend to think that's a superficial thing because number one not all dealers have high prices um I've been this is going to be my 10th National and last year it seemed like prices were a little high but you'll always find dealers that are looking to sell the people that have PRI high prices generally have stuff that nobody else has or wants to take their stuff home with them because they're not going to sell it you know so I tend to believe that prices prices on good stuff are going to be high I think that some people that complain about oh the prices are too high want something like a Michael Jordan rookie for $100 you know oh I didn't get that Michael Jordan rookie for $100 oh the prices are way too high it's like live within the expectations of the hobby a little bit um and there's nothing wrong with saying hey would you take this for that card you know or would you take that you know now granted if you if there's a $1,000 card let's say you're interested in you can't say well would you take a hundred for it you're going to get laughed out of the building but work with people if you dealers most dealers you can work with and you can shave a little bit off if you have a $200 worth of cards you say hey would you take 180 for them they'll say yes 98% of the time you know I mean so you you've got to work with them a little bit and then on the other hand if you're a dealer you know work with work with people a little bit most dealers have been really flexible I I have been going to shows now uh for a good 15 years and I have not run in I've run into maybe you know bad dealers on you know the number of bad dealers on one hand in 15 years you know what a dealer decides to charge is really up to them but like I said you they're either going to sell stuff or they're going to go home with it and at the national it costs a lot of money to have table space there so dealers are going to be pretty flexible okay um like I said people talk about distance to the venue and you know yeah you got to drive a little bit to the venue but it's not like you got to drive eight hours to get to The Venue from your hotel might be 20 minutes might be 30 minutes is that unreasonable no like you know a buddy of ours he had some friends that came down from the up last year they rented a house uh in Chicago and it took I don't know probably 20 minutes for them to get there did they complain about it no they had a really nice place they invited us over for a cookout it was fun you know so you just you just got there's things you got to deal with uh when you go there and like I said I think a lot of those are just like superficial superficial things that don't have to do with the the the show as a whole like I said yes some dealers have high prices but there's hundreds and hundreds of tables to choose from not all of them will be high prices you can find great deals at the national every single year okay so that's the negative people about it and that's usually my job by the way like I said but I'll talk about positives of the Cleveland National I've been there twice this will be the third time uh the the aax center is a really big space there's a lot of room to stretch out my guess is is because the hobby has grown so much since they had the the national there last that they might be putting a few more tables in which means less space to kind of stretch out and sit down and and you know maybe eat lunch or something but the good thing is more dealers more dealers more cards more possibilities for buys you have to kind of balance it out a lot less traffic in Cleveland than there is in Chicago all right no matter what time we leave the national we usually we leave on Sundays from the national from from Chicago and no matter what time we leave it could be 10: in the morning could be noon could be 2: in the afternoon whatever time it's always an hour and a half to get out of the city always traffic dead stops it's terrible it's the worst thing about the Chicago National traffic on the way out Cleveland you take the exit you're on your way all right now it's a little further for us to drive but it balances out because there's usually less traffic all right usually quite a bit less traffic um the hotel that we have in Cleveland is nice you know it's more of a condo than a hotel and uh we've been there a couple times they've got uh pool jacuzzi they've had uh uh Hospitality hours where they have you know free food and drink in the evening they have that a couple days a week free breakfast in the morning which is nice our hot and it's they have a really good shuttle service that take that takes you right to the ax center um like I said if if we don't want to use a shuttle we can drive it's not that far I would guess less I would guess it's less than 10 miles probably closer to five miles um so if if we if we let's say have an eye on something bigger where we want to take you know my vehicle there we could do that it's not a not a big deal we just save a little money on parking every day if we don't if we take the shuttle um generally costs are less I I think like our hotel is less um if we want to go out to eat there's restaurants that are with you can walk from the hotel um you know they're not it's not Morton Steak House like in Chicago everybody talks about that like blowing money on a steak when you know if you have a decent Grill at home you can get a good steak um you know um like last time I think we were in in Cleveland there was a Chinese place that we went to that was really good so this the costs are kind of less you know in Chicago it's just crazy all the time um I in the two times I've been to Cleveland the deals have been really good we I bought a lot of stuff all three of us that travel together bought lots of stuff from Cleveland so you know the deals are there just like the deals in in in Chicago or if you go to Atlantic City I'm sure it's the same um going to the National also gives me ideas for what to look up on eBay some people say well I want to cut all the costs and just shop on eBay sometimes it's hard to come up with well what are you going to what are you looking for on eBay for me going to a show doesn't have to be National necessarily uh gives me ideas on uh you know what to look for you know there's so many different cards and variations and colors and all kinds of stuff that the national has so many options to just look at cards and that's that's the big thing I get out of going to shows is just like what's out there what's out there that I could buy and so um like I said there's been a in the aax center there's a there's been a lot of room the AA Center was so is so big they used to I mean the original um the original uh purpose of the IX Center was to build World War II bombers so to give you an idea how big that place is um traditionally there's been a lot of like I said a lot of places to sit if you want to take a 20 minute break from being on your feet on the cement for hours there's usually a lot more places to sit and relax than there has been in Chicago so you know the other option people are saying well I want to go to Fanatics Fest in August and and take that in and that's fine that's that's cool like if if I hear that Fanatics Fest is really awesome I might go there too next year you know Fanatics Fest is in New York City in August uh it's doesn't from reading the description it doesn't read like a card show it and I don't really know exactly what's what this is going to be but it doesn't read like like something like I'd be interested in like compared to the National but we'll see if people go to Fanatics Fest and there's lots of footage of it and it looks like it's really cool might go there too um Fanatics kind of Dipping their toe into uh card possibilities and and uh you know meeting people at our collectors and stuff and that's not necessarily a bad thing but with the national I know what I'm getting I know what I'm getting it's a Super Bowl of collecting every year there are a lot of really good shows across the United States um throughout the year I've been to many the ship show Lancing Midwest monster I was at a couple years ago that's a really good show but they they even the people that run those shows I think would admit that the national tops them all as far as size and scope um so I'm going to keep going to the National I'm going to keep going to the National if they have it in Cleveland you know for us you know it's a it's a few hours drive it's a little more little further Drive than Chicago but like I said there's there's a lot of positive uh in Cleveland next year I'd probably do a video on the positives of Chicago you know Chicago there's a lot of good things going on there um but for the the haters uh of The Cleveland Show I'm just I just don't see it and uh like I said the complaints that people have tend to be pretty superficial so hopefully you go to The Cleveland Show and and hopefully I see you there um until next time ketos thank you and we'll see you down the Trail
