this video we're going to cover entering data into Stata manually we want to equate yourself again with this data user interface and to do this we're going to use the icon toolbar in the upper left hand corner of this data window now to enter data into data manually all you need to use is the data editor edit icon that is the one that looks like a spreadsheet with a little pencil go ahead and click on that what you'll notice is that you get a window that looks like an open spreadsheet very similar to what you would see in Excel and you can directly add data into the spreadsheet so now I have some data that I've collected I want to add it into data so that I can't analyze it I'm going to start by adding data into the very upper left hand corner data can be added into any spreadsheet in the following way we add our variables as the columns and our observations as the rows that'll become more apparent as we add our data in so the first variable that I've collected is the ID number for each of my participant so that's the first thing I want to add I'm going to start with one ID number two and after I add in each number I hit the enter button so three and the enter button 4 and the enter button you'll notice that every time I add in an observation value in the result window there is code that's written so now I'm going to add in ID number five ID number six and ID number seven you'll also notice that Stata has assigned a generic variable number of var one now I'm going to go over to the next column and I'm going to add in a new value for a new variable now I know that this variable is gender for participant one the gender was male so I'm going to type in M and hit enter then I'm going to type in F and hit enter what I want to bring your attention to is that these values are red because I've typed in character value status stores numeric values differently from character values and refers to character values as string variables participant number three was male so I'm going to type an M and hit enter participant four was male M hit enter participant five was female participant six was male and participants seven was female I just realized that I've made an error participant six I added in an N rather than M that's not a problem I can just use my cursor go back to that cell and type in the correct value and hit enter now I'm going to go to the third column which is going to be my third variable name and start typing in those values now this variable is number of T so the first participant ID number one had 20 T I'm going to type that in and hit enter now you'll notice that all the rest of those values were populated with missing or period the next participant was a 7 the next one a 28 the next one a 12 next 16 next 2 6 and the next 2 2 so now I have all of my variables for all of my participant I want to bring your attention over to the variables window which is at the far right hand side what you'll notice is that all of my variables are listed for one bar 2 and bar 3 and then you should notice that the properties of each variable is listed so if I click on var one down below under properties I see the name the label if there's a label for that variable the type the format and any value labels and any notes that might be there as well now these are not very descriptive names for these variables and I want to change that I can do that right here in the variables property so I'm going to change var one to ID and hit enter now you'll notice it was immediately changed in the column and immediately changed here under the variables window now I might want to give a little bit more description variable label is a place where you can provide more description if your variable name is not very descriptive you want to keep your variable names short and sweet and labels provide you an opportunity to give a little bit more description so I can write in identification and hit enter so for variable to bar to is not very descriptive I'm going to change that to gender and variable three I'm going to change to tea now here's where a label might be very useful I'm going to change this to face line natural teeth and enter now after you've entered your data manually into Stata the next thing you want to do is save it all you need to do is click on the Save icon find the place on your desktop system where you want to save the data set give it a name and save it as a stated data set and click Save voila you're done now this concludes our video on entering data into Stata thanks for listening
