hello and welcome back to rude english today we're going to be talking about the o and or sounds these sounds don't exist in american english so if your aim is to speak english with a british accent or if you just want to understand british people better then you don't want to miss this video [Music] you can see from the chart that the uh sound is part of the single vowels group and is produced with the mouth open and the tongue towards the back so open your mouth round your lips and pull your tongue down and back and then use your vocal cords to produce a short sound from the back of your throat the oh sound is usually represented by the letter o in words like clock and it can also be represented by the letter a in words like what occasionally it can be spelt with other letter combinations such as o u in cough a u in because o w in knowledge and a c h in yacht this sound is unique to british english and in american english it's more likely to be replaced by the ah sound so these words are more likely to be pronounced clock what because knowledge and yacht you can see from the chart that the or sound is produced in a very similar way to the oh sound but the two dots next to it tell us that it's a long vowel sound so open your mouth and round your lips and pull your tongue down and back and use your vocal cords to produce a long sound from the back of your throat or i bought some dvds from the pawn shop do you want to watch them no you pervert in that sketch i said i bought some dvds from a porn shop now a pawn shop is a shop where you exchange things for money so you can take jewelry watches instruments dvds and video games and you can give it to them and they'll give you money in return you can also go there to buy things that people have exchanged however this words can easily be confused with the word porn which refers to adult entertainment these two words are homophones which mean they have different spelling but the same pronunciation and they demonstrate an important difference between british english pronunciation and american english pronunciation the or sound doesn't exist in american english so when it appears before the letter r americans are more likely to shorten the vowel sound and insert the r sound so porn in british english becomes porn in american english when the word doesn't include the letter r americans are more likely to replace it with the r sound so porn in british english is more likely to be pronounced paan in american english the or sounds can be spelled with lots of different letter combinations in british english including o-o-r indoor o-u-r in poor o-a-r in board ar in warm a in always a-l in talk o a in broad au in autism augh in daughter and ough in bought in american english these words are more likely to be pronounced door poor bored warm always talk broad don't usually change in connected speech but they may be replaced by the schwa sounds in weak forms of function words i recommend you watch my video on weak forms for more information about this if you've already watched my video on rhoticity then you'll know that when one word ends in the or sound and the next word starts with a vowel sound we often insert the sound to make it easier to pronounce in connected speech for example for example i often say this phrase in my videos and if you listen carefully you should hear me insert the sound so when i speak naturally it sounds like for example i love your accent when i speak naturally i love your accent well that's the end of the lesson thanks very much for watching please remember to like and subscribe if you haven't already if you can think of any other words that include these sounds or which are pronounced differently in american english then leave them in the comments below and i'll read them and i'll give you feedback please stay tuned for more videos in the future and i will see you next time goodbye
