hey guys welcome to Oz Great Wall we have some other people joining us today we have free shot ah yeah check out her channel we have the links I hopefully somewhere in the description box as well we have Mia Fidel and we have you okay whatever No today we're gonna talk about names all right cuz names are something that at least in Chinese culture this is a big deal what Han culture it's a big deal right it's your name is just aim right but but there's a lot of thought that goes into your name well again every corner goes where you would like to hurt sometimes in the Western culture they pick names based on like I named him after an athlete like there's some sometimes there's meaning and sometimes there's just like it right but an Asian in Chinese culture especially there's always like you were saying there's always some kind of like a lot of thoughts going to that yeah we can we go can we talk a little bit about the differences of names I guess and used really so first of all in Chinese culture are at least there's very rare instances that we name our kids after ourselves oh yeah that doesn't exist that really doesn't happen then death or something like that dick worry there's not even hello but do Chinese people have they done that in the past ever I I'm giving way to instance that has happened and I can't think of one if you name your kid after yourself now here's what other people's gonna say here's what you think other people can say that's gonna be true not even gonna be like aren't you for yourself yeah but in Western culture it's extremely prevalent yes so common all right when I'm not gonna start talking about the origins of it I don't know but look why do they do that a lot of times Kings like Henry the fourth of 18 it's a title right the title thing but then later on uh you know people are like hey you know what I want my kids to carry our name but also in Greek culture cuz Mike my cousin married a Greek guy so my cousin-in-law is Greek everybody has the same name because they take like the boy will be named after the grandpa so every second generation has the same name so alternate alternate yeah so like his father's name is Niko's so his son's name is neat hmm right and then his name is Jana so his son's son's name will be on it so always like that and then I know in like the Spanish culture you know I like Spanish to out like 12 like like Maria Magdalena Rodriguez de la Jorge whatever like yeah it's true cuz they have like kind of like Thai last names hey good oh yeah very long names and just have a lot of words like yeah but Chinese people do none of that also we don't name our kids after athletes or our celebrities we don't get first of all it's kind of hard because in America right like you want to name your kid like Brett Brett Farr after Brett Favre or something in Chinese like your game is like two characters returning and the essence of that was it doesn't even make sense like if you want to name yourself out kid after yell mean yeah so you're left to miss Qin so right kid okay Shen me like what does well don't even gets it doesn't make sense right in Western culture sometimes you will name them after a prominent figure a king or whatever and another thing a lot of Western names actually come from the Bible the Bible or um John yeah or the Old Testament New Testament depending if you're Jewish or your cat your Catholic and also other religions as well but Chinese people aren't like like name yourself like after you know me like this doesn't happen right yeah I think I was also respecting like right people don't want to be like alright I respect my grandfather so if I main view after my grandfather I would have to like think about that that I will have to call you basically my grandfather you know me like Oh your grandfather by their name so that makes it less is this - yeah there's no there's no respect there so that really doesn't happen hey yeah and and one other difference is uh while there's a lot of difference but main thing is like Americans in Western culture of an English name you have a middle name and usually um that that has meaning as well but it's usually after someone in your family right put it in Chinese names there's no middle name you're not like oh I'll give you a middle name after my no let's talk a little bit about Chinese names okay go back usually Chinese names have you know characters right rest characters so traditionally there are three character names right most names are three cartooning there's also traditional names that has four characters like suma something something or that's really rare though like boyoung is the last name right or summize the last name right usually our last names are one character crap in some cases they're two characters because everyone right now you'll really find a pony's person with 230 names most Taiwanese people have three character names and because that's more that's more tradition okay I'm just saying like there should character name sometimes like you know some people have them but it's not very common most gonna had three or sometimes four okay so now Chinese names are given more because of the meaning of each characters right right so like again that's different than like let's say Michael it's defined in the book of names that Michael means one who is like God okay but in Chinese there's no like book name so we're like your name you cannot find your name in a book a name and then I can't that's what it means every Chinese name almost every single Chinese name might mean something different right so it does mean something different yeah it's based either on your characters we're even on the sound of your cursor is that because a lot of Chinese names or characters sounds the same so for example okay let's get down to our names alright my name is Johnson alright so uh so here's my how my parents described you get my name like well we don't want you to Chen also means sink and some other Oh also sounds like sounds yeah medically right then she sounds like to rise so they said we don't want you to sing we want you to rise so that's where my name comes okay so my name is also surnamed Chen just like Mike's ten and then uh five you so big it basically means loud as hell yeah is that you did it's just really describes a person oh yeah yeah yeah it's actually bro it's not a lot of tech it's big music during its it also means that you know something's big shout it sound like you're laughs but we all before left yeah it's true so so why they call you loud well because uh the Thalian comes from loud zé's scriptures so my dad was a scholar so he the phrase comes from fagging shishun which means the sound is so vast that it's that you can't hear it anymore I really thought they named me after I was born cuz I was like that's our people do that actually changing no no you they could vote and then wait wait and they're like oh western cultures I'm time yeah you have you have a period of time you can decide on Mia what's your Chinese name okay my Chinese name I don't really use it a lot or at all um cuz I use Mia um but my Chinese name is Jung quite soon I think the koi here means like kindness okay having a heart of kindness or to like a lot of people Oh starts to make sense he's appear do that what did you figure that out by yourself my kind of song as far as I could record that fine it oh I can't even say okay is it the yeah yeah it's not the moon it's not the moon it means happiness oh yeah yes oh yeah happiness yah means elegant and noble oh yeah oh yeah yeah so yeah not yeah I'm pronouncing yeah excuse me I uh well you wanna say it right because otherwise it becomes happy chief difference between happy teeth and like ability oh yeah so you're like happy and noble and elegant happy elegance I'm gonna tell you guys something you probably none of you know I should know okay you probably don't and language makes me sad okay um Chinese all have little names what do you guys know that a little there's a Solomon so I'll try music most Chinese they're not nicknames you're actually part of your names but it's kind of like a nickname as official know what a Chinese version has a shell mean I didn't know that two names yeah yeah usually have two names one is like we call a little name kind of like our like a nickname but it's also officially you're known as that so are you shaking no holding little bit like why would I be because you only have two characters I think there's always me like like like a like a shortened version of your name or like something like that it might be a completely different moon I did not know that you guys are right but what do you mean it's official like is it on your birth certificate is I look and who comes up with it yeah you just can't come up with it your problem is you're born you come up yeah your parents come up with your official name and they come with this yummy with a little bit tell me is like is something that your family will call you sometimes your your friends of the family will be like okay little little Mikey all right whatever what's his little neck no it's not showing it could be anything he's basically saying it's just son so Mike I've known you for a long long time and never knew you don't know my cell me you know what cuz it's probably so embarrassing like shushing oh is it shouting no no my little name is dawn doe the reason why I can't believe that was because don't as a winter okay winter winter because I was we were on a date I'll board on the winter solstice okay that's why my my my my grandma actually gave me the little name don't really knows except for your close friends for family so my parents don't call you that but okay right because I've grown up now when I'm younger than what they used to cover so I'd like to try it out my girls would be like don't don't yeah you know like yeah I should not have told us that don't don't sound like you're like a more cerulean because no no because like like even the name like let's say they called you shengshi like that's kind of youth they can call you that now but oh oh don't come here but something like you sound like you're fine that's the point that's a movie yeah I never had a little name yeah you know why why is that - cuz you grew up here no no no no no up here I was born in China I should have been given a little bit what shouldn't you should have a little bit yes your mom you probably have a little bit my sister has a little name so I know what you're talking about it's like it's not related to their name but they just somehow come over right yeah my younger sister has a little name um but she's the only one who has I got and it she's called home home it's like red Paul this is Reverend yeah when she was born like she has like red chubby cheeks oh yeah she's the only one I don't know why uh-huh for Chinese like we have a second layer which is we always pick an English name which is always waiting it not all not all of us you're right now all about all of us but a lot of people that have the freedom to pick an English name is sushi all right no but the three of us did wait who pick I pick my who picked her I'm not shaking my own name did you really yeah I picked a bar you guys I didn't pick my own Indonesian name is no no no whose name oh wait hold on you're like Miranda yeah no I don't think that myself my actual name is Miranda but no one really calls me Miranda because that sounds a little awkward to me okay um but everybody's called me Mia okay so that's like your nickname and you didn't pick you didn't pick your name either no so yeah so the first generation I think when those of you who those of us who kind of grew up here yeah but maybe we weren't born here I have an English name yet we got to pick our only like us like meeting you yeah but Felicia and a lot of other younger Chinese can I just parents probably I think we grew up people couldn't pronounce Chuncheon or bagging and we had to pick a nickname it was Ozzy zing crossing my word awesome chin mine was Diane for a whole year but Diane and I'd be like yeah and then one comes like yo that's a girl oh my god to my fellow Asians out there Cinderella is not appropriate name for you it is gotta stick with you sir oh I had a friends who came from Taiwan and she's like oh you'll love my English name I'm like what is actually it's boo boo I'm like like Yogi Berra head refrigerator not appropriate name refrigerator no that's actually way that's actual name no register that move it I want to see that register but the illusions giving she's giving them no name you'll have to register it oh just like they'd call me right call me refrigerator for all you guys out there who want a Chinese a lot of people do right gotta be careful right because a lot of times your name sound like other things so you want to eliminate the possibilities like those in front of ours right cuz he wanted to calm self big universe all right okay so you call himself that you it Oh like your job yeah but then no one Kiki pronouncing myself so he's like what's your shine is it like he's like he's like Xavier bitch yeah so you got to be careful about the way you pronounce it also like characters mean different things right and also I would suggest the people who wanted Chinese thing don't don't be lazy and just turn your name into the Chinese phonetic e yeah you know like that's just that's like then like but but like poopies like like go to someone you know go to your chinese teacher go to your friend and have them create a nice name free oh it also checked them because they might be missing exactly anyways guys thanks for watching don't forget to check out Felicia's new channel copy and kashmir hi guys thanks for watching later
