Many or even most NASA rockets ran liquid fuel thorough the engine exhaust cones to keep them from melting and to preheat the fuel. Solves two problems at once.
This has been done for most rocket engines since at least the Redstone.
If you look at the nozzles on virtually any rocket engine, you'll see a fine pattern of grooves on the outside. Those are the tubes that the fuel runs through to cool it.
