I am a poet. I am a poet... ...and I am not going to die. I'm going to write... ...hundreds... ...thousands of poems right here in this room. I felt a funeral in my brain... The greatest poems ever written. I have never seen volcanoes. Kept treading... And there is nothing you can do to stop me. ...till it seemed that sense was breaking through. Wild nights. Wild nights. My poem... ...will be published. How dare you. Have I or have I not made myself quite clear? That I do not approve of a woman seeking to build herself a literary reputation Emily, and now you've gone and done it! A woman should receive an education to be sure... ...but that education should not be the same as a man's. Dad, I remember these- Well not well enough! What are they so afraid of? Maybe they're scared that if they teach us how the world works we'll figure out how to take over. Hmm. Hmm. Sue, I have an idea. Let's put these clothes on and sneak into that lecture. You realize what you've cost me? What you've cost this family, Emily?! My God you bring me another public humiliation! It's not my fault. That's how I feel sometimes. Like I'm frozen. Trapped. Why do you always take so long? White lilies aren't they nice? They're the symbol of death. Oh... I love them. It's not that I didn't want to find God, I did. With all my heart I did. But I wasn't gonna lie about it. I wasn't gonna say that I felt something in my soul, unless I really did. And every week that went by... ...I tried to feel it. I wanted to feel it but I didn't feel it. At least I didn't think I was feeling it. It seems like something you would know if you felt it, right? Well, we're definitely gonna have a war... ...and a million men will die. And then a million snowflakes will fall on their graves. I have one purpose on this Earth, and that is to become a great writer. Whoa. Okay, you're finally gonna let me publish your poems? You can't print my name. Why not? Because my father doesn't approve of women publishing. You're a genius, Emily. He has to approve of that. You will ruin the good name of Dickinson! My father will burn every copy if he has to. Anything to prevent me from ruining the good name of Dickinson. When will you come for me? To take me away from this place. What are you looking at? Most people would be glad if I never came. Death. Not me. I always want to see you. You're going to be a great poet. You're gonna write things that the world will never forget. Please... ...don't take him from me. Please! I take who I wanna take. I only wish I could live to see it. Don't say that, you're not gonna die. You've had your fun! You've written your stupid little poems! My poems aren't stupid. Yes, they are! We can find no scar... ...but external difference. They're important. They're meaningless. When will you accept it, Emily, you're not a real poet! Because the only real poems are the ones in books. Emily Dickinson was born in 1830, in Amherst, Massachusetts. You'll be the only Dickerson they talked about in 200 years. I promise you that. Aside from a few mostly anonymous verses, she remained unpublished. When she died her poems were discovered. Some of the strangest, most fascinating poems ever written.
