cause there's a grace to be is [Music] we're at graceland i always love to start even though we started the other day out here i like to start out here before i go over and hop on the bus for the tour because i love reading about his history for the people that don't watch every time i'm here elvis was born in tupelo mississippi on january 8 1935 the son of vernon and gladys presley he moved to memphis in 1948 soon after signing a contract with sun records in 1954 he achieved tremendous popularity his musical and acting career and records movies television and concerts made him one of the most successful and outstanding entertainers in the world he died on august 16 1977 and is buried here at his memphis home in graceland which was not his original burial we'll go there as well but it was his beloved home moved into here shortly before going into the army and never ever planned on giving it up and is here eternally now let's go take that tour thanks for having us elvis week we're here a double lanyard day i feel like wayne and garth vip that's right oh so we are at the house i love coming here i never get tired of it just walking up to it you just think of how active it used to be with elvis here and all of his friends and all the invites now he bought the house in the 50s late 50s right before he was drafted so he only got to spend a little bit of time here and then went off to the army his parents talked him into buying it it was a hundred thousand dollars and he also purchased the name graceland off the former owners who are the ones that named it every time i look up there i just think of that's where elvis room was where he passed but now we're going into this historical landmark and uh you know you just you look around and like i said it was always full of people so it's kind of fitting that it still is as you go in you'll notice that it's done in that old original style it's white and this is the first room this is as soon as you walk into the right this room is pretty much the way it was when since elvis bought it you can see the the peacock stained glass was something he added but that room in there as a music room that he always would spend time in there's a lot of photos of him a lot of photos of him sitting on that couch there's one playing the base it was a custom-made couch for this room and that picture of elvis is about the age he would have been when he bought graceland you can just imagine him sitting in here having conversations smoking his cigar playing the piano playing some gospel songs on that piano of course and that picture of vernon was a gift to vernon for christmas from elvis one year so now we're walking back into the entryway looking up the chandelier and just thinking of elvis all those times walking up and down those steps he loved to spend time upstairs so it was kind of haven if he invited you it was a special treat to be invited up it wasn't something that everybody got to do when they came to visit now i noticed i have that pretty much that same mirror at my house made me kind of laugh out loud mine's silver but same style and i just love the way it's decorated of course now we're going into what used to be well once again looking up at the staircase this used to be vernon and gladys's room and then eventually became minnie mae who elvis called dodger it was his grandma and he used to come in here and visit her all the time that was her idea for the wallpaper and you can still see how it would have had elvis picture in there she lived up here believe until she passed away 1980 now we're headed back to that entryway and i laugh when i look at this because i remember lisa marie telling stories you could always hear elvis jingling everywhere he walked and he would always be doing karate demonstrations right there in the front and of course looking at the stained glass there above the door and once again right here under that chandelier is where he do his karate moves he'd love to do it for people now we're looking at the dining room and elvis would have sat at the far end of the table the uh family lisa marie they still have dinners here when she's in town and the silverware and everything that's on there the plates that's all elvis and priscilla's wedding china you can see it has little touches of all of us all over the place and then right there's the famous picture of lisa marie and priscilla and of course like i said elvis sitting at the far end of the table so you can see the tv now we're in the kitchen and the kitchen is trapped in time i mean absolutely trapped in time you can see his security tvs where he could keep an eye on the whole premises he was very kind of paranoid about people breaking in there's the staircase up to the second floor and walking down that amazing mirrored stairwell into his music room downstairs that's the bar for the music room and i just love the way it's painted you can tell he did that himself i mean that was his request was to make it look like this and you can see three tvs across there you can see that big giant u-shaped couch with the monkey in the center now the tvs were because he liked to watch sports and keep up with the other shows and watch them all at the same time of course and you can just imagine him and his buddy sitting right in here hanging out he had the monkeys because he had a pet monkey used to live here called scatter there's his record collection and that's the ceiling the entire ceiling is mirrored in there and then i like looking at this because he had an early off to the right ice machine now we're walking into the game room which is eye popping [Laughter] when you look around you probably first notice how the walls have this pleated fabric that was all hand done it took hours upon hours for someone to do this is the one room in there that i probably wouldn't have done like this but um it's very elvis he was very proud of this room and always had people down here laughing it up now we're heading back upstairs into the den that was the jungle room we know it as the jungle room and the furniture in the jungle room is unmistakable they actually recorded two albums here moody blue and from elvis presley boulevard in memphis tennessee and he loved to hang out here i remember ginger saying the first time she came they brought her in here and her brother and sister were hanging out in here waiting to meet elvis and of course more monkeys around the house and lisa marie used to like to sit on that chair in the right that big circular chair i love the floor ashtrays very indicative of the times and elvis would have sat right there with his feet up he liked that seat very cool room and he always had two uh telephones one that he could call someone in the house and one outside the house and jinger said the phones never rang they always buzzed when she was around you always heard them buzzing and this is the door that takes us outside of the house and as you can see towards vernon's office this would have uh also been the carport where elvis kept his cars and that's the back of the house as we're walking out to vernon's office just a wider shot at the back of the house and the big yard in the back where he used to play touch football with his buddies and the swing set for lisa marie that we always remark on that he shot a hole into just not at anyone just random shot around the property kind of neat to think elise marie playing on that though and here we go into vernon's office vernon took care of all of the expenses all the fan mail all that stuff he was responsible for basically elvis contact to the outside world and uh paying all the bills and all that stuff and there's elvis sitting in this room after he was uh discharged from the army and now we're going out to the stables hoping to see some of the horses but we didn't see any at this point we just kept looking around weren't sure why they weren't out but um kind of hit or miss sometimes whether they're out there or not beautiful property a lot of photos of elvis riding the horses around here this takes us to the trophy room where elvis and priscilla had their reception and the pool area where elvis is seen diving off that very diving board now we're headed off to the racquetball court and this is sadly the last place that elvis spent his time before he passed he was in here having a workout and those stairs actually take you up to the hot tub that takes you down to the racquetball court his last moments in here he was playing that piano playing um unchained melody and blue eyes crying in the rain this is one of the saddest stops on the entire tour for me and the racquetball court that he loved to spend his time so now we're going to elvis grave over here and this is where he was moved to because people had well they say people had disturbed his original resting place i've heard theories that some people say vernon put people up to it so that he could move elvis here you can see all the elvis week fan club stuff up but where elvis and his mother originally were buried this big statue right here was there and they moved that here as well when they moved elvis well when they buried elvis they moved his mom to where elvis was i believe in the same mausoleum and then eventually move them both here and they actually have gladys's original headstone here right over here that was originally out at the cemetery and we're gonna go right after here out there and see where elvis was originally buried where glass was originally buried and the reason we're doing that is because i hear that the mausoleum is kind of falling apart so i want to do it while we can i'll show you where this was originally placed before they moved it elvis loved transcendental meditation so he had this built for coming out here and becoming one again here's the honorary grave of jesse his stillborn brother there's his mother gladys which people always say why was he not buried between his parents i don't know there's gladys and look some of his belgium fans have left this and then there's a picture right in between of vernon and gladys together she was a great person a great wife and mother she was also loved by many we loved her dearly and she is sadly missed [Music] there's vernon [Applause] who passed after elvis in fact the theory of what people thought when they heard there was an ambulance coming from grace and they thought it was vernon originally not elvis [Applause] your presence we missed your memories we treasure loving you always forgetting you never and then this is elvis grave right here lots and lots of mementos here for him the king but he never never really cared for that people would shout out you're the king while he was performing live and he would say there's only one king and i'm about to sing about him he'd do a gospel song of course the number one thing people say in every video is why is his middle name misspelled well that's the way he he liked it spelled i guess they decided to go with the aaron we did notice when we were taking the tour that his doctor had spelled the aaron on his birthing notes and everything too so i had always heard that he didn't he didn't like the a-r-o-n spelling he preferred that's cool that little elvis logo but he preferred the a-r-n it's what i heard and there's minnie mae nicknamed dodger that was his grandma that moved in here to the parents bedroom but she had the nickname dodger from elvis try to hit her with a dodge ball when he was young and that name stuck so happy to be out here for all this week we'll definitely take in the candlelight vigil and all that as well then he put all these stained glass up here for his meditation as we make our way around we'll go visit his grandson who was laid out to rest a few months ago out here [Applause] somebody put some blue suede shoes here elvis getting a grammy elvis you light up our world they even put a glitter kiss on there for him [Applause] fan club so benjamin is right here which makes you think that lisa marie will also be here at some point as well when i interviewed angie marcasi the woman who basically runs the exhibits and everything graceland it was right before he passed and i said i asked her then are there any plans for anyone to be added out here and she said no there were no plans then literally two or three days later he passed right into the pool now we're gonna go around to the front of the house get a nice shot out front and head off to forest hill cemetery there's his memorial eternal flame all kinds of wreaths and various things out here it's amazing to think someone who passed away in 1977 on a daily basis has crowds of people coming to pay homage to his grave and home but then celebrating the anniversary of his death coming to be with him many people year after year and there it is gosh i would have loved to just driven up here to the front like a guest one time and i definitely need to get some lions for my house i think that's a given now and it's weird to think this is also where the ambulance would have picked him up that last time and the hearse to take him to the cemetery there we've got the horses so now we're heading down elvis presley boulevard passing winchester and we're about seven minutes away from forest hill cemetery elvis and gladys original burial place oh there we go i see something off to the left there's the building where gladys was buried in front of so let's go there first boy that's ironic isn't it what we're looking for is actually right over here this building right here they buried gladys in front of now this was this was huge because she was also young and she was in her mid-40s and elvis was in the army and he was so displaced during that time i mean a lot of people may not know this or may not think about it but he was he was the height of his career when he got drafted and he was scared to death that he was going to be forgotten he seriously thought that you know that he was going to be forgotten by all of his fans and he was going to be washed up when he came out no one was going to care about him and he would spend hours on the phone with his mom so when he found out that she was sick and i mean it happened quick she'd only been living in graceland for a year and she passed away he got leave and came of course to the funeral and there was a um if you remember when we were back at grayson that big statue i told you that was originally right here on there and her grave marker was actually in front of it right here and when she was buried there was a whole pile of flowers and there was a picture of elvis kneeling down and his friend from waco that he used to spend all of his time with he would go stay with him in the weekends they both came up here together and there's a picture of them right there and he even said he said that was like a changing point in elvis's life he knew that elvis would need someone to fill that void like a like a motherly figure and then of course when he was right after she passed away is when elvis was sent over to germany and know who he met in germany so this was her original burial spot now let's go find where elvis was originally buried and that's why you see the flowers people know that that's what was here and they removed this took it of course over to graceland but i know when elvis passed where they buried him here either they moved gladys or they were going to move her into the mausoleum also but eventually like i said earlier they ended up moving getting permission to bury elvis and gladys and the whole family at graceland and that's not hard to believe at all because everybody in memphis loved elvis i mean pretty much everybody in tennessee in the world loved elvis but especially in memphis they were great to him he could speed up and down the street and his motorcycles and they'd never pull him over because he was very generous and very loved always gave back to the community and uh it's just one of those things they did for security to make sure that nobody would ever bother his grave or gladys's grave again that's what we're looking for over there so i found a photo online that matches up right there and you could actually see the hearse parked right up here in the front entrance because elvis was buried right up inside this mausoleum i mean this is i mean we're seriously talking like status shock he was 42 years old was found basically dead on the 16th and they buried him on the 18th and even the day that they were having the funeral somebody hit some of the fans with a car and i mean it was just all it was all kinds of craziness morph i think every flower in town was sold and used brought up here it was laying across the yard up here actually i'll go from the other side and show you a shot i really can't do that overhead shot that they have but i'll match it up here so you can get an idea of all the flower arrangements off to the side as they were the pallbearers were all carrying his casket down straight down the center then there was a photo basically right about here that you can see all those flower arrangements tons and tons of them and then we had a shot kind of like this of the pallbearers carrying elvis inside so you might notice that the lock is on here we're gonna go around and see if we can't find somebody to unlock it maybe let us in but we did notice that over here on the ledge there are some flowers and once we walked over here and peered in we noticed this was looking right into elvis's grave his original grave you can see some of the flowers and everything are in here [Applause] let me go around the corner and see if i can see from the other window and zoom in well take a look there i walked onto the other side and uh you can actually see the original elvis crypt right there so even though they haven't locked up we could see it from both sides of the windows all you future travelers they must keep it open at some point because they got a guest book [Music] so i think the reason that it's not open is because i noticed when i got to this other door the ceiling is falling in i bet they're not letting people in because it's hazardous well what we showed you we'll have to live with because the offices here have reclosed because of covid you can only get someone to answer the door uh when appointment only so understood and the uh the whole place where he's in or where the original grave was is all locked up so just have to look through the windows when you come visit it's time all right we are at the sheridan for the ginger alden event and here it is what i had heard because i was wondering like why ginger hadn't ever kind of spoken out or anything it was out of respect for her husband her husband passed away not so long ago and now she's kind of feeling more apt to talk about and dispel rumors that she felt feels or unfair and mistruths they do have a sign over there at the entrance that says no photo or video during the event so we'll catch up with her after i think we're allowed to take photos with her after so i had requested to film little bits of this to help promote ginger and they said that they were filming it themselves they didn't want anything like that so i just decided you know just to be a spectator like you guys and the event was great i love ginger's book so pretty much most of the things that she talked about in the talk were things that she talks about in her book gives the same answers so a lot of the conversation was just kind of if you hadn't read the book it was a little bit of information but since i had read the book it was just her clarifying and her um her retelling the exact stories which is always a good sign because you can always tell someone's telling the truth when the stories are exactly the same she seemed to want to clarify two things that she had got a bad rap on that she said were not true and i kind of felt like a lot of this conversation was just to kind of get to those one being that people had accused her of not enjoying watching elvis perform or that she didn't enjoy being there whatever and she said that couldn't have been further from the truth she loved going to see him perform loved watching him perform and thought he did a fantastic job every time he performed and she said it was true that you know he had he would hurt himself he had hurt his legs and stuff and he would go out and didn't tell people that he was injured and so sometimes he might give a better performance than other times but she said it certainly was not for a lack of trying elvis always gave 100 effort every single time he went out and so she said she was extremely proud of him every time he performed and she said the second mistruth was that um that someone had said that she was over at graceland with elvis priscilla came over and elvis told ginger to go downstairs and that ginger waited hours down there while elvis and priscilla were upstairs talking and she said that that simply just never happened and i in her book she makes it a point to say that she only met priscilla one time at graceland and the story was that elvis was in the hospital he was bragging to his nurse about the great engagement ring he had given ginger ginger didn't wear the engagement ring because she was afraid something might happen to it so she always kept it locked in her part of the bathroom up at graceland and so he had called ginger and said ginger go get your ring and bring it here i want to show it to someone so she went to graceland when she opened the door when she was when they opened the door to let her in she saw lisa marie and said hi and elvis's friend that answered the door said priscilla's here would you like to meet her and she went in there had a nice brief conversation introduction with priscilla and left and said that was the only thing that ever that ever happened between those two in the house and then you know they didn't do a q a or anything like that and i get it you just never know what people are going to ask and what kind of taste they're going to ask so they didn't do that but then they told everybody they could line up and go over next door and take a photo with ginger now i know some people were trying to film things but they kind of made it clear they didn't want that to happen so i didn't try and plus they were taking groups of 20 in at a time lined up and we were four people in to the very front so i didn't want to be that guy as soon as the line was starting to pull out a camera and try and interview ginger for five minutes but i did say hello to her she was very nice and i did crack a joke with her i said do you ever allow yourself to yawn now and she stopped what she was doing and she kind of like looked at me for a second kind of confused and then it hit her that i was making a joke from her book that elvis would say he hated when someone would yawn around him and she told a story about how elvis was doing a karate demo for ginger and her family and her brother yawned and elvis kind of got annoyed and said am i boring you son and that she had also said that was the reason that elvis didn't want to do um the movie with barbara streisand it was because when he met with barbara and the director didn't like that the director yawned during their meeting so that got kind of a smile out of her and she looked up at me when i said do you allow yourself to yawn once she figured out what i was saying she looked up and she started laughing and she said i forgot about that thanks and then i said you know ginger do you ever have any interest in going back to graceland i mean i can understand why you wouldn't but do you have you know at least one more time in you that you want to go and she said i'd like to see it from the outside and i'd like to see the meditation gardens and i'd like to go on the planes again but she said as far as going inside i don't want to because most of the time that i spent there i spent with elvis upstairs in his room and that's the one place you can't go so it just wouldn't feel like the same place to me and i just don't think i want to change that memory so i thought that was a very nice response and i could definitely understand it she even said i drive past or i've driven past the the planes numerous times but i just haven't gotten to go in and i thought it was a real testament i found out after this event that um not only did lowell hayes the jeweler who elvis would always get his jewelry from and who made ginger's engagement ring not only did lol hayes come to this event and buy his own ticket but so did elvis pilot ron strauss they both liked ginger enough to where they spent their own money and wanted to come out and visit her and i thought that was an amazing testament to her i liked her book i i thought she you know told a great story and really kind of painted an interesting picture of elvis and it was really nice to meet her she was very kind and to my knowledge she doesn't do this at all i mean for her to come out and do anything else this week was kind of a shock to a lot of people because um she feels that a lot of her history has been altered with elvis and so you know this is one of those cases where the only people that know the truth are the people that were there and it was just it was a nice moment to meet somebody who elvis liked so much that he had proposed to at the end of his life and spent so much time with it at the end of his life so it was a great event like i said i could totally understand why jinger didn't do a q a but she did bring some of her clothes that she got with elvis and things that she was seen photographed in she had those on display and was very friendly to everybody that came through the line that i saw so there you go [Music]
