welcome back to the shop no this is not hoov's garage but today we're going to talk about a really sweet Chevy 1500 and this thing as you can see it's pretty tall let's get [Music] started wizard are you in there I I I barely see you I'm over here oh hi there you are Yep this one's pretty like I said is pretty tall let come around to you guys oh that's better okay there we go this is a 1985 Chevy half tone as you can see it's been lifted it has a small block V8 in it the customer just inherited her her dad passed away this was her dad's truck and she had some ideas of things she wanted to fix up and bring it back to its former glory but she really didn't have an idea how much things are going to cost so she listed out things she wanted done we got the estimate done and first of all it came in here not even running like you could crank it forever it will not start we did get that solved the customer budget did not allow us to go any further but let's go ahead and take a look around this thing and talk about these old square body pickups there is the beautiful iconic front of this 85 Silverado I remember seeing these new as a kid I have lots of fond memories and I used to have a Blazer actually a K5 Blazer so go around to the side you can see that it has been lifted got some big boy BF Goodrich allterrain on it one of the things the customer wanted since it's so high is a little step that could be bolted on here and a little handle that could she could pull herself up in another thing is she wanted the fuel selector valve fix because as you see there's a fuel tank here on this side there's also one on on the other side she's not able to switch between the tanks we did figure out what was wrong with that the actual selector valve was bad I believe it's been repainted I'm not for sure I don't know this was a stock color offer they were usually Browns and black and silver and white not metallic green but it does look very very nice as you can see on the passenger side here is the other opening to the other fuel tank like I said she's not able to switch between one side to the other as we come around to the front you will find there's a little bit of rust right here she wanted a quote on getting that replaced the metal fender liner which these are metal unlike today's trucks where they're plastic so you guys like to play the game try to guess what it is this vehicle like I said would crank forever will not start so I'll list four possibilities and you can let us know in the comments what you think it could be is it number one a bad fuel pump is it number two a bad distributor is it number three a bad carburetor or is it number four wiring with the ignition switch there's some issues going on there power not getting out to start the vehicle I'll let you guys choose and then we'll talk about what we found so both of my technicians that are here today no so both of my technicians are super good with computer stuff electronics and things of that nature but this old school stuff they still have a little bit to learn they really haven't messed with a lot of it once I showed them some of the tricks they easily caught on oh yeah I I get that now but they just really haven't messed with a whole lot of the older engines they're both smart enough they could have found out what was wrong they they would have found the problem but this is back from my era and even some of us that are older than me I knew my way around this I could find out what's wrong literally in 2 minutes the first thing we did is we crank it while we're putting a little starting fluid in the carburetor if it was a fuel issue it would have at least tried to start it did nothing so that illuminates the fuel pump and the carburetor cuz no matter if you get fuel or not it's just not starting next thing did is get a test slide out and check for power and ground at the distributor when we turn it on we'd had power we had ground we had everything we needed that it should start but further checking found out it had no spark let's take a look at what we found was wrong and just to let you know the answer is the distributor so again for those of you who are my age or older you know exactly what this is it's an hii distributor they came out with these in mid late '70s sometime and they used them for a very long time it's actually very good unit your ignition coil is on top of the distributor cap is no longer off to the side somewhere they put out a lot of power everything is self-contained inside of this unit one of the things we checked first was there's power and ground which connects into those terminals you see we had power we had ground we had everything we needed that should make this run but it still would not run so we did check the ignition module and initially we did find that to be a problem I'll show you what we found I'll take the cap off you can see it's got a little melted bubble right there these need to have a thermal compounds like a white paste on the bottom when you put a new one on this one did not have the paste and they burned it up so that was likely replaced before her dad who unfortunately passed away very sorry to hear that but it was replaced and it failed so it's easy to think okay well we'll put another module we'll put it in and it should start it still didn't I'll go ahead and take this rotor off and show you what we found here we have some weights that are used for timing advance but that wasn't the problem if you see there's actually an electronic hall effect sensor down here that as it spins you can see little teeth line up with poles that is used as you see the wiring here by this ignition module to do timing adjustments and what we found was is the actual sensor here the hall effect sensor was dead when the ignition module was replaced I don't know what happened maybe something got chipped or something I don't know but it died on her and we did find that it was that sensor you can replace just the sensor you can take this all apart and mess with it but I remembered from actually from a year or two ago you can get an entire distributor assembly for 50 or 60 bucks anymore I mean the whole thing the cap the coil the rotor the distributor everything I can spend that much money or more trying to fix this one why would I even bother so let's take a look under the hood what we did how you doing up there Mrs wizard good thing you got a stool otherwise I don't know if I'd be able to show this yep I've worked on many trucks where at the shop we used to have we actually had a Topside Creeper you could lay up there and work and everything I worked on a lot of trucks that way we don't do a whole lot of trucks here but if you take a look and you can see the red distributor cap there it is a complete distributor assembly so with a complete assembly everything's new for a lot less money than it takes to even fool with the old distributor and it worked I'll go ahead and start it up and let you guys hear yes it does run again but as you guys can hear especially gear heads there's an exhaust leak it runs good it runs really good but there's some exhaust issues and if you take a look you can see the headers were recently installed and it really needs to be probably reworked with new gaskets and bolts and things but it runs that's what main thing that she wanted is she wanted it to run again why won't it start now it does start and it runs very well so we've got that problem solved so of all the things that we went over we showed you all the things that she would like to do we got the prices together and it was 200 for this 300 for that it's really not that expensive but when you tally it all up it adds up really fast and the customer kind of looked at their budget and said well let's just get it running for now and then I'll come and pick it up don't do any other work and one piece at a time I'll bring it back and we'll do this and then we'll do that and I get that I totally understand so we did get it running unfortunately we can't go any further it does need some more work but it's definitely worth it and I'll show you why right here is a K5 Blazer which basically is this truck right here without a top on it $26,000 I've seen some of these go for even higher especially the pickup truck versions they can go 30 or 40 Grand and being she inherited this she doesn't have a lot invested in buying one it's definitely worth fixing it so we told the customer hey when budget allows bring it back we'll take care of the next thing and then the next thing and we'll get this thing totally sorted for her it is a sweet sweet truck I remember these old trucks I really like them they are very popular especially in the midwest you see a lot of these on the road they in very nice condition and there's still some that aren't so nice condition but they're still going so this definitely is technology and things back from the old days and some of the stuff I started working on and it's kind of fun to work on the older stuff sometimes unfortunately this stuff's getting really old and it can be really difficult on the older vehicles you got rusted brake lines or rusted things like that it can take a lot longer so back in the day at the dealerships when these were new a job that could take an hour now it takes two or three because they're old but like I mentioned this one is definitely worth putting the time into I'm glad we could get it running for her again she can go drive it she can enjoy it I'll be excited to move along further getting this thing sorted for her there's a lot of links in the description below a lot of things you want to check out there we have a lot of videos coming down the pike lots of cars in the shop you want to make
