hello my dear audience today we're going to take a look at one of the most spectacular designs by john loner the lrod house this masterpiece in both organic and space-age architecture holds up with the very best achievements of john lautner's career together with the chemistry the orango house and the sheet goldstein residents the elrod house belongs to the top four of the most famous designs by john lautner the reason for its iconic status is not only the groundbreaking design but also its use in the james bond film diamonds are forever in this movie james bond is beat up in the house by two women in a stylish way the house was also used for many photo shoots including a famous playboy shoot called pleasure on the rocks as with all laundry designs this house is named after its commissioner archer elrod was a famous interior designer who designed the houses for the rich and famous including frank sinatra bob hope and bing crosby arthur elrod gave john lautner complete creative freedom over the project and joan lautner used this opportunity to experiment with a revolutionary concrete structure archer elrod was a flamboyant bachelor known for its extravagant society lifestyle and he needed a large house to hold his wild parties in the elrod house was especially designed for this purpose a house used for partying this explains the very large circular living room that can hold almost 100 part goers archer elrod called this house my pleasure dome let's take a look inside the elrod house is located on southridge a street that holds the largest and most expensive houses of palm springs the street is built on top of a mountain so it has a beautiful view over the city on the same street and only a few houses away is another famous design by john lonner the bob hope house bob hope gave john lautner in 1973 the commission for this house of the year was impressed by the elrod house what a great street to live in with two masterpieces of modern architecture that are built less than a mile away the house next to the elroth house was owned by legendary film actor steve mcqueen i always find it a funny idea an iconic actor who lived next door to an iconic house unfortunately south ridge is a gated community so it is impossible to even come close to the house however there are some very few occasions that the elder house is open for public but many of us will never enter the house in this picture you have a clear overview of the entire building the circular living room in the center the large bedroom the small bedroom the carport and the wall that surrounds the courtyard when the house was completed in 1968 it was much smaller than it is today four years later in 1972 a guest wing was added to the main building john lautner used in this building so-called free architecture this means that original nature is not removed to make place for the house but that the surrounding nature becomes part of the house in the case of the elrod house the rock the house is built on is not removed but the rock becomes part of the interior laudner could easily eagle eyes the rock but instead he chews the stones of the rock to support the roof on many places the rock breaks through the floor and rock even forms the shape of the windows when the house just was finished it looked like a futuristic bunker over the years plants in ivy grew against the walls making it look more organic and harder to recognize personally i prefer the more plain and minimalist look of the past [Music] behind the large bronze front door lies the beauty of the building a door made out of frameless glass forms the main entrance of the house when you walk through this front door you step right into the living room the circular carpet and two half circular couches are designed by r2 elrod and custom made for the house the shape of the roof looks like a flower or a sun with sunbeams the thickness of the concrete protects the inside from the extreme hot temperatures of the desert sun the triangular dormers provide just enough sunlight to prevent darkness because the weight of the roof is largely leaning on the rocks it is possible to have long rectangular windows between the top of the walls and the start of the ceiling a stair follows the descent of the rocks the stair leads to a lower terrace which is still inside the circular walls of the house this terrace leads to an infinity swimming pool which has the shape of a half moon the pool enters the living room and by doing that it mixes the outside world with the interior the huge opening in the living room make the house look like a large cave two enormous gloss sliding doors can close this opening the doors are curved and go partly over the swimming pool these doors are operated by remote control because no electric engine is strong enough to operate such heavy doors john lautner invented a system with chains and pulleys to reduce the weight of the doors behind this brown wooden wall is the kitchen which is formed in a half circle behind the kitchen is a storage room with an emergency exit and at the other side is a small bathroom this bedroom has its own personal bathroom here you see the outside windows of the small bedroom [Music] the large monster bedroom is next to the front door because the many rocks come through the floor it gives you the feeling of literally sleeping between the rocks the bathroom is placed between the bedroom and the carport there's a jacuzzi built in the floor of the bathroom not unimportant next to the jacuzzi is a cocktail bar a small door gives access to the cardboard so it is possible to step right from your car into your sauna let's now take a look at the guest house which is at the other side of the swimming pool the house has a very large gym so you can stay in shape every day [Music] from the terrace of the guest house we walk up the stairs that are connected to the swimming pool these stairs bring us back at the main house next to the house is a small pathway that leads to a garage that is lower on the hill we end our tour with a landscape view from the house a sunset and a desert of palm springs this was your tour guidance thank you for watching until next time good bye
