Elizabeth Holmes begins 11-year prison sentence

babies news legal contributor manager at the managing partner I should say at the Cochran firm Shawna Lloyd joins me now for more Shawna Elizabeth tried to delay her incarceration as she awaits a ruling on appeal but now that she's in prison does she have any legal options to get out absolutely she still has an appeal going because she actually had two appeals one was to make sure that she could stay out of prison until her actual appeal looking for a new sentence a new prison a new um trial would happen so that appeal is still going but she has to be in prison until that appeal is heard by the higher Court now what about future appeals she's a mother of two young children could that have an impact at all that's not going to have an impact on the court system and her appeal because let's remember her appeal is based strictly on the record of the trial court they're saying that there are certain errors that there should be a new trial and so that appeal will have no effect on who she is individually as a person more so worth was procedure followed did the court use proper discretion this is entirely a procedural question on to whether or not she deserves a new trial now how much of this 11-year sentence is she actually expected to serve so in the federal prison system 85 so we're talking about just over nine years which is a long time when you have young kids when you think about her family what does visitation look like for an inmate in a Maximum Security Prison so she will be allowed visits with her children but they're not going to be anything like what we know is visiting with our children hanging out a lot of affection a lot of hugs and being close a lot of that is going to be severely limited because she is currently an inmate she will be able to see them and visit with them but it's going to be very restricted now earlier this month Elizabeth and her former partner president of theranos Ramesh Sunny bawwani were ordered to pay 452 million dollars in restitution so what's the latest on that front so they're going to be looking into all of their assets any background any other dollars that they can go after to have to pay this restitution because it is required so she is going to have to turn over any money that she has saved or maintained since she was running thoranos so that money is going to now be used to turn over to victims that suffered at the hands and lost money due to her defrauding them all right Shawna Lloyd great to have you thank you hi everyone George Stephanopoulos here thanks for checking out the ABC News YouTube channel if you'd like to get more videos show highlights and watch live event coverage click on the right over here to subscribe to our Channel and don't forget to download the ABC News app for breaking news alerts thanks for watching
