Electric Porsche 911 | Fully Charged

hello and welcome to fully charged this is a show about electric cars and the future of transport and energy and what you can see behind me is a classic petrol heads fantasy it is the Porsche 911 circa 1979 it is a classic classic motor except this one's a bit different [Music] [Music] so Richard this look at me dang it the beauty analytic Abhisek what era is this that is not the brand new under there by an American this is 1979 or was a 1979 st target which had a 3.2 liter engine in and yeah a very nice car in its day but when we got it it was kind of on its last leg was it a runner when you get was a runner just about right focus on the ish so we have to do a complete restoration on this but I mean it looks immaculate now so isn't just you've converted it to an electric art you've kind of rebuilt it yeah there's two kind of things that we do it we do complete restorations and then electrify or we take a pretty good car and then just do the electrification but on this one is a full-on restoration that we had to do new wings bare metal respray a complete ground-up restoration on this Wow and what we've also done as well as a little bit of styling so you'll see some things like the chrome headlights rims because normally these are color coded LED headlights so we've done a little bit of what's called the soft back date on this as well which has given it a little bit of a nice retro styling to it as well it's now pure electric it's not because often people say all oh is it a hybrid no it's not a hybrid I mean it can you is there any way of seeing the much because I love the way you fit the interiors is the motors are the motor is visible in this one or the motors and the battery packs are not visible because there's a cover on the motor and the battery packs obviously it's not safe to have people just accessing on the back so you need a tool to get to them this is different to the Volkswagen vehicle that we want it's different but it's kind of the same basics let's say so we've got a front and back battery pack so this is a 54 kilowatt hour battery pack using Tesla Roadster batteries right we've got you remember the red beetle that you came for a driving lesson this has two of those motors end-on-end Wow that's because that vehicle wasn't sluggish yeah this has two so we've got 54 kilowatt hours of battery pack which is good enough for about 200 mile range you drive in sensibly just like any other car petrol car if you drive like it like me yeah that range if I come down ascend sensibly you've got 200 mile range out of it and the north to 60 on this now with the electric motor is about a half a second to a second less than when I had the big 3.2 lump in it Wow so it's very comparable to when it was at its racing peaky absolutely burning up the road in your Porsche yeah because this really is I mean it support this is the sort of course that you would drive when you had a really big phone it's that area yeah anybody is owned or knows about Porsches oh when I do we're safer they will fall off their chairs now there's a boot yeah now I have seen in the back and that's full of very complicated German engineering elves and rasoi on drugs or even breaks down but now this is a boot so that the roof for instance is Targa roof so it folds up the roof the reason that Wow fit sandbags in there if you're going near to the coast for the day have you done this for a customers there's someone that correct yeah Thurman business of customer car that has been converted to electric restored to the highest standards and that is getting delivered actually and about weeks time so we're just doing final snagging on it now and we'll probably do another buff and polish on the paint and it's ready to go so is it what I want to see is how batteries have changed even in the time you've been doing electric cars good that is what was in the red that was in the red really we had last year this is a Tesla Model S right which in your car there is 16 of those in your car so this is kind of a Tesla Model S in the box yeah that's amazing so when they're in the Model S feds made absolute all slapper in the floor pan and then this is essentially what's in a Tesla Roadster or a Mercedes smart car electric cars I have reason as well so as far as energy density is concerned that's half a kilowatt hour right that's five point two five point three kilowatt hours I think it is and this is about three what's amazing is this one yeah what this is self power so it so if you do it that because it's roughly the same thickness right yeah but if you had one 1 2 3 that's 1 and 1/2 kilo hours correct and this is 5 so yeah it really doesn't show very clearly yeah if we had to get eighty kilowatt hours in the Range Rover which is what these are destined for the Range Rover 80 kilo hours with those we would not have much car less to fitted and I mean that is now probably two or three year old men and that's so like the 100 d same sized batteries but with 15 kilos more so clearly they're working towards greater energy density yeah because if you think about it the electric motor really hasn't been evolved since the days of Edison and Tesla themselves but battery technology is just going very good noise I like that noise the noise is part of the whole car seriously if we go now and women yeah that's much quieter than the window oh I like that oh you have lots of Porsches and lots of very noisy very fast ones I've never been in one you know I now think this is what Porsches are like that's a good thing they're really hot here as well this connect up a steering this wouldn't have been built with power steering on it originally notice you put that in put that in right here because there's a little bit more weight in the front obviously we've got a front battery pack but it just helps with many parking yeah it's a smaller it slightly smaller steering wheel as well so but it's great for parking and as soon as you get above a certain speed the electric power assist literally goes to nothing right this is second gear we haven't like dipped the collector anything and if you put your foot down you still got a bit is that it's so weird with a electric car with gears if you expect it to run out way before it does you know in a pepperoni we need a rural and inhabited I was expecting a gear change two seconds before you usually when I Drive these cars I have them in fourth gear and I leave them in fourth here and you start in fourth gear you can go up 230 miles an hour and put in fourth gear if you're but normally if it were one gear unless you're feeling that way in climbing you want to get through it sporty and you can go up through down through the gears and you can feel those if you in rally mode a little bit feels yeah I can tell it's got sort of sports car right it's got a harder yeah right set this up the RAM you know a bit of a sporty ride it right required but not too sporty not like people that's more like a go-kart right so how many gears have you got going there are five yep once you're up for them you know 70 miles an hour whatever you put in but it'll probably do 150 miles an hour if you have the clue them is for the right we won't be doing that today though and I'm very grateful just in you yeah on this goddess two modes as if your mode of power mode so if you really want to get the maximum range out of the car you need to do in a 200-mile journey Prince proper nameko most you won't even know that it's an eco mode really when you're driving it apart from the fact that when you see something it's just more as regulatory just gen fire and so you reckon it will avoid you with with careful driving you would get around 200 miles an hour I did 200 miles and it's the other way around this will get me from Mid Wales to reading Wow I mean it's not careful driving either it's just like sensible I'm sure with careful driving probably get a little bit more if you think about it is the 54 kilo our backpack in a school in a cucumber sauce just aerodynamic now yeah [Music] what I'm trying to get it grunting but I guess I'll just quickly do that so do I need to put foot on brake is that on that's on me I should enjoy meat remote noises more you wrong wrong Bob let's don't pressure go pedal yet it's got a go pedal got a remember which is the gopal so now with the goat and it's got a handbrake oh yeah yeah oh yeah that's why I'm getting used it's the wing mode which I absolutely agree are exquisite in communitarian cutting I can do some road in that one and some car in this one there we go I like we put this up so like the sound note that one oh I see what you mean about power steering F is I remember there the VW was heavier I don't even know what you're on this leave in say I'm a second night actually go stop just yeah you don't have to worry about it clutch belts going stop not too much of the Gomes outrage Robert our cubbies go easy on or stopping home adversity surf which is the first of a drug report oh nice move it certainly got a little bit of spirit strong it's not the other thing that you're crazy chose must have is that massive punch in the back right from the get-go this one has a little bit of a slow build or what but what's frightening it is like you're going down a hill that starts shallow but then gets steeper because it just keeps bloody going with it we programmed the cars up to the customers so this right even though it's going to sing better because I guess the people of the trees while we're in midair my silver one not the red one they build mass when I've softened up the acceleration a little bit from the very from that's all because that's that brutal kick yeah I mean you'll still get if you put this in first gear it runs you'll still get quite a kick out of it but it's certainly not as crazy as on your other car yeah so I just programmed it to be a little bit softer on the air accelerator ahem break toward it actually I could have spun the back out I didn't think I should Henry's the year customer and he will be watching us sorry Henry I'm doing very careful and I'm very anxious alright let's try it let's try it Oh Merlin what about if I do that I changed gear an electric shock dear diary yesterday was remarkable so yes that has got some serious Willy when you put it in first so if you want to do if you want to show off at the traffic light you certainly can do Oh it'll keep up with it probably anything partnered Tesla bottle whatever is ludicrous mode yeah it's got some good punch I know it's very impressive [Music] it's not a fairy ground right mother was learning is that the more often I do it the worse so take the corners I know that's that's a tight racing line [Music] that's all we've got time for but I must say I've had enormous fun driving this the first portion of ever driven and it's electric it is a gold star in my school diary it is kicked off the bucket list what a privilege
