EFAP Movies #44: Saw

foreign [Music] one of the top comments was like they should do soar and I was like that's the whole idea this whole plan oh this was actually movies that were coming out consistently around Halloween time right for like one per year for ages every year one through seven was one per year down right became now as is another tradition we'll probably go around little align people doing like a what is sore to you I would want to open with the people who know the least about it so I assume that would be Rags what I know about saw or let what I allegedly know about Saul is that it's got a fun little puppet and there's some spooky weird things he makes you do that's it that's all I know I've never seen any of the Saw movies the saw spin-offs the saw extended Universe I have not seen I'm not into like Gore so I hope that's not too strong you'll be fine because you can look away and that'll be great is metal the next up then for knowledgeable I guess so it's basically this is just in general or with regards to saw with regards to Soul hey it's the same for me as this works I'm vaguely aware what's going on in those movies we got all these Trapper rooneys and the puppet I think those movies get like weirder every time well a lot of exercises do obviously we're not gonna want to confirm it to anything at this point yeah that's basically it it's just this weird gory thing apparently and that's why I never really watched it all right but now we are all here and I'm super excited uh I can hear the excitement in your voice yeah shut up go left to right on the remaining five which is so cap first you want to go what's what's sore to you I think I've seen five of them I remember there being lots of wacky situations characters wind up in and lots of twisty twists and turns and so I'm looking forward to that that's the best kind of twist all right how about you Bronco I'd say that I am familiar-ish I have watched some of them and I couldn't tell you which ones they were so it's more like a broad understanding of the series like the premise that as it goes on it starts to get more crazy and kind of deteriorate and stray away from what was like originally a pretty cool idea that's yeah that's basically what I've got Jay Longbow uh yeah basically seen all of them and the Chris Rock one uh just recently which I hated uh maybe I saw the first one in theaters when it first came out with my cousins just imagine uh the twist at the end and like a a theater full of stereotypical Negroes going ape [ __ ] over over all right John you're up same as Jay I went to see it I remember in theater it came out in like the small town I grew up in and it was like it was like the date movie to go see really and yeah except I didn't obviously didn't have a date at the time I just went with some friends of mine or I might have even just gone alone to see it I don't mind it that much the first two I don't mind if the first one reminds me of a really good student film you know there's some clever things to the script bogged down by overacting particularly in the second half but we'll get to that anyway that's my take on it I guess Pro tip next time take them to the zoo yes it's much better than taking them to saw Seoul is one of those movies that I remember because I was like I got into seeing this and now I'm like how did I get into this I was 11. how the [ __ ] um but I was very tall for my age and I'm pretty sure my dad was very fine with me seeing horror movies because I just they just didn't really I found them more fun and interesting than scary most of the time yeah I remember seeing this in theater and being like whoa this was really cool I really like this and then I know the first second and third pretty well and then four five six seven question mark I think all of them I could tell you the results but I can't tell you which ones are which so it was always fascinating to me such a strange set of movies for many reasons I think we'll get into them as we progress through them but yeah sir I remember the first one being pretty solid I'm curious how it's gonna hold up since it's been such a long time since I've seen it I don't know if I'm a fan or not of Saw I'll find out I think I'm not a fan of saw one thing I did know and it'll be a way to move on to the last person is that I very much enjoyed the coverage of souls stuff from certain reviewers including but not limited to IMS over here what do you think of oh thank you there's going to be points where you're all very confused about the timeline and I am here to help so if you ever if you ever get confused about what the [ __ ] is going on in these movies don't worry I've got you covered I can help don't be scared to ask whiteboard with all the names of the red lights it's crazy it is that's one of the things I'm kind of excited about I'm not gonna lie the reveals well there you go if anyone was curious about what kind of roster we got here got a whole set of different familiarity levels which is kind of what I was hoping for I really don't know how this is going to turn out so is everyone right with soul I'm ready spaghetti yeah oh oh man alrighty then three two film that made Lionsgate it gave them enough money to change from that shitty looking logo Twisted pictures I've always thought had a neat little icon yeah oh I love it it's all twisty James one's first film right yeah I think it was first feature I think so this actually was a student film before it became a feature of course the big defining thing of the film is I didn't have a lot of money right is that kind of like defined scope of the projects and you can see I was gonna say the main character here or at least one of them is underwater this is foreshadowing Aquaman James who's also uh one of the writers collaborator with James one and he also directed The Invisible Man and upgrade was the Assumption there that he was put in the bath and he slowly slumped down until he was fully under and then it woke him up by doing that yeah otherwise he'd be dead who's that turn on the lights What if I I would have done that too I would have already I quite like the object being flushed down being the opening shot like to immediately throw the audience off balance where it's like wait what was that oh that might actually be important honey you don't want to just be wet you know just being wet just sucks that's true it does suck that's the real torture then they use this one for a scary movie skit there [Music] oh no this room is gross yeah this is not a good room yeah as much as everywhere so what comes into someone with an artist so they're just like how did that happen it's like you know old room man you know well they they kidnapped people before these people and they just you know it's like yeah [ __ ] I guess I would hold that you'd have to hold both ends and like scoop it and then pull it towards you like you'd hold the arms of the shirt and then you'd throw both ends forward so they have shoes kind of like Loop it tie the sleeves together or something no they don't have shoes okay yeah you need some initially at the end maybe take your shirt off and tie that into like a roll it into a bowl and tie at the end take your pants off oh that'll Wick too come on you can do it oh batteries are dead how do these work did I it's just baby shark and you can't turn air do you want to catch a flying song slide it across the floor I don't know that's not what I saw you don't that's that's ridiculous Madness way to go what was the budget for this I assume you don't know Adam I think it was uh like a million dollars right that was that was what they had and it made like a hundred million dollars so you know profit margin like return on investment God imagine how good that was feel as a filmmaker it's the reason why I became a franchise right now return on investment is insane quick another one another one another one another one another one and another one and another one there's more chance he wants us to cut through our feet I think I may know who's done this to us last I heard police still hadn't caught him the only reason I know that is because I guy was under yeah because the guy was underwater so it couldn't have been that long I still didn't understand the underwater thing to be cool he dropped in the water and that just straight out of the room again my explanation is he slowly sang until I think that's the only exploitation that you could have yeah everything else is a bit stupid oh that key I almost threw the [ __ ] away work it you'd think that you'd have enough practice throwing things to be a bit better at it at this point you know not even by this you're just like you're old enough to where you should have a basic ability to mask in particular they do the monster noises over it going uh Adam are you thinking on this like the in Seoul they do that and then someone goes up to someone then it's like they knock them out and you're like well what did they do it's like they knocked them I assume that they have like they do shows the movie Trope is chloroform but there's other things you could use pocket sand of course how did you know to turn off the lights who cares it worked yeah but how did you know Instinct Instinct yeah you're a terrible liar you want to know yeah I'd love to know yeah how long would you guess they've been in here here it is uh 20 minutes 30 minutes maybe [Music] why didn't you show me this before yeah [Music] maybe the fact it's it's that's how raw it is these raw emotions they actually took this family you will be in this movie absolutely that was better you don't need a gun the only thing left to do what are you gonna light it with it was lighter lighter yeah which would make me think ooh fire that's pretty good what can we do with that good thing he's not looking yeah they do that a lot with each other what are you doing nothing I mean the audio would still come through normally so I don't know maybe they're whistling yeah he was whispering the problem is it's clear that that's happening so you have to keep that in mind now for whatever happens next so you uh you still want that cigarette do you like already suspicious at all yeah if I were the killer I'd be like the guys dude he did it again of the throat the thing that couldn't possibly be destroyed by an overthrow some lighter why they choose the opposite what every time I wonder when cigarettes will be like a Antiquated thing you have to explain people whether they are like phone something wrong people used to do that what are you doing oh God what if it looks like your life depends on it yeah like the poison just it makes you vomit profusely and then die so jigsaw's just like uh oh whoops can you hear that wow no that's for us yeah one thing I was thinking if he did go with like a hole I will try to kill him if you had to be a cigarette it had a big paper splooge on the end of it I'd probably be like uh oh wait this is my blood it looks like the killer that yeah in front of you it's lipstick you only tried for a few moments it might you might have to be a little patient I remember how I got here oh this is a depressing place to live wow you live here oh God it's like a million dollar apartment in Los Angeles this is like where the serial killer should live this is like the serial Killer's house in seven except he's not supposed to be a serial killer in this context he's just like a photographer dude it was shot in Australia wow no comment from the Australian damn oh what am I meant to makeup that's literally true filmmakers are music makes me think that this is the end of the movie it's like wait yeah there's so much to do wow photography's really boring I fell asleep dude there's a lot of times in this movie where they need to show us what's happening but the character can't see anything until it creates a little bit of dissonance but they've done it several times you could do it better than this you know foreign if you can introduce the idea which is he's walking and taking photographs this would be way better if it was pitch black with a couple of Reflections and then only yeah yes you only ever see the frame yeah this I think they're losing out on the effect by making us see everything plus that's like jump scare waiting to happen What in that case I'm an instant throw something at him oh don't do that oh wow tell me who sent you who is that did you hit the puppet you lose if you hit the puppet why did you hit the puppy did you not read the note on the puppet oh [ __ ] uh I put it right there it said to you that's a horror movie dwarf I've ever heard one yeah yes this is a horror movie apartment they really waited for it to take the photo oh God we've been here for 16 hours daily dab so he was asleep you could have just got him but you waited for him to wake up walk around his apartment find the [ __ ] doll and hit it with a I think you also thought it destela was good okay like it's all right we've all been there okay if we were to just grant those things as true for the sake of this argument what does that have to do with saw uh Soul's better than both of them definitely I was hoping to get to the points of uh praise as well I like making fun of it but there's plenty I like in this the overall idea of just a new kind of serial killer quote unquote new and then all these big twists and turns and all the revelations that come one by one like yeah I could totally understand how an audience would be engrossed in this absolutely yeah I mean it's just like very strong yeah it's a nice small thing kind of like Cube was yeah where you can just film something really low budget small cast uh limited locations well then in this case it couldn't it have been better sure could it have been worse yeah for the problems that it has I think it's all right I like it and I think it's good uh yeah same jigsaw decided I'm going to plant them all in the room and I'm actually going to leave the key to the chains attached or at least floating in the bath so let's pretend for a second that anyone else character wakes up and he he doesn't immediately thrash so he opens up a thing just goes what the [ __ ] and then he in his hands move around he says oh what's this chain thing and holds on to it before he gets out yeah and then he goes right this oh this opens my thing cool this opens yours all right okay well like what what is the idea there it doesn't really cut to the core of the concept of Jigsaw does it okay I always thought that it was supposed to be a really great added on way of just being like see you're your own enemy or something it's like [ __ ] off how was he supposed to do yeah it's to add an extra layer of like oh I think that there's a fear in regret in these films where it's like oh I could have done this if only I had known this then I'd be alive but now I have to live knowing that I could have saved myself and I didn't yeah like that's a very common thing in these films and it's just a way of them adding that it's not it doesn't make any sense I think that's pretty accurate they wanted that beat so badly that they didn't think about the actual logic of it the the whole idea what jigsaw is because he's dying he's really upset about seeing people wasting their lives so he puts them in scenarios that are meant to test you know basically yeah decisions they make in it because they're almost they're supposed to be like appropriate to this story at least yeah pretty much I think that was exemplified yeah the guy was cutting himself despite having a life that's perfectly acceptable he's like so how much you're gonna cut yourself to keep your life just like yeah I guess he he has his philosophy but he clearly plays favorites a bit easier I kind of I kind of want you to keep living and I kind of want you not to but I'll pretend as if you all have a chance that guy who has to unlock the safe what were his thoughts yeah yeah sorry sorry buddy that's one of the things I remember when I watched this that I felt uncomfortable with I felt like if the choice of those three games we saw other than the the one that these guys are going through it's like well I I guess the one you want probably the one where you have to hurt someone else but then again yes the Bob wire one that really seems possible to me maybe I need to be there to understand how much it's not possible at all or it's gonna be weird crawled along the ground really slowly yeah yeah if you go real slow you've got two hours to get across what looked to be like two meters maybe three I will say I I vastly prefer jigsaw as an antagonist to an amorphous death from the Final Destination movies nothing Well only because of the execution I would say myself yeah I suppose well here's the thing watching the Final Destination movies to work on the edits for him I was like oh so any [ __ ] nonsense can happen at any time cool but it's great but this you know the way he executes his plans are very kind of over the top but I appreciate that there's a character there that we can try to make sense of hmm I think there's a bit more motivation than just they should all die yes yeah honestly I think that's part of what Dave sword's character as well that that whole like that he does it for a reason but I don't know how well it carries through the bowl we go on so now I want to talk about detective tap he's the best detective oh I remember even when I first saw this I was like please give me something more than just like he just dies he kind of repeats too he dies though he gets his throat his partner killed so he goes on like the The Arc of like the avenging cop who's lost his ways unhinged but he's still gonna follow this case he's gonna put it through the end he just gets killed but he's crazy yeah it's just like oh he's watching the security camera like 24 hours a day for years he's finally got his moment he shows up with half a clip of ammo preparing for this moment like for years wouldn't it have been more satisfying just tweak it so that he and zap kill each other and then we get to think about how both of them are like under jigsaw's game kinda and they were they got the point of killing each other when that neither of each other were what they they wanted really something like that because like oh man I've always remembered being so unsatisfying they have a little boss fight he just gets killed you're like oh that just seems pointless we got goofed yeah it's like the least satisfying way to possibly watch that play out he's just two idiots fumbling around well yeah the way he gets shot is like everything I don't know it's all terrible uh if Adam knows this but I've played through it the soul the video game detective tap is saved yeah someone medically and then he's put into a series of traps that he's got to go through I forgot he was the main character yeah yeah I would like to uh just share like a one minute clip uh if if that's fine this is in the settings for the if you go to the game settings for saw the video game this is what you hear [Music] hahaha [Music] oh God [Laughter] this should have just played over the credits of the first movie yeah yeah the voice acting is so bad so held back I like this yeah it's not great not great [Laughter] I am I am constantly thinking about that voice acting like all the [ __ ] time almost sounds like Morty it's so embarrassing [Music] oh geez get me out of here out of curiosity what number do you give this little one I have it rated as a seven right now holy moly um I out of a million there's so much wrong with it and like the The Experience does dwindle the more times you see like I've seen it probably like 20 times so like this this time I felt like it was kind of more of a six but I don't know I I do have kind of like a bias and favoritism towards these because I you know grew up with them and yeah it's so nostalgic for me I don't know the the first one the first one has very humble beginnings and I appreciate it for that at least um yeah as Frankie said I like it more than I think it's good I can't even say it's a five like it's not on Big Star I think it's got too many problems uh and you really like how much of it takes place just in the one room with two people yeah we do a lot of flashbacks but all the stuff for most of the stuff I should say before the acting gets a little uh wacky wow it's just the two of them in the room I quite like it pretty sure this is the best one yeah yeah question mark I would say that oh my goodness yeah so that'll be interesting to see I depends how you're judging it if I want to put on another one right away just for my own personal enjoyment this isn't the one that I would put on first but I'll let you know when it comes up but yeah this is definitely the the one to most appreciate in terms of like its Legacy I guess uh that was Soul um I saw was there anything else you guys wanted to mention about this movie Before We Say Goodbye it was funny I found it more funny than I've ever found it and I think that's because I've been watching it with all of you that could be one yeah yeah Ally there's some clever attempts at plotting but it needed more work on it Carrie always is very funny in the movie yeah yeah I also think that the film has a style that comes through pretty clearly there's a lot of cool shots oh dude I would go as far as I say Souls a Series has a style that I don't associate with much of anything else got its own voice for sure so I like the little puppet puppet I hope he has his own movie puppet hasn't gonna appear real quick you could call it spiral as a reference okay I'm very clever okay bye
