hello hello there welcome to number fourteen answerers place this is where we am when we were writing the film we started off writing it in London in our office and basically there was a lot too many distractions in London and you know it's difficult writing with the internet and cell phones and poncey blackberries like the stupid media types we are and going off at regular intervals and so eventually when we're writing Hot Fuzz we said we have to get into the country and get out of London and switch our phones off and switch the internet off and that's exactly what we did we came to this little flat in Wales which the marketplace is just down there Oh dad I think I mean this is the flipchart that we did for Hot Fuzz and we haven't actually seen this since we kind of like wrote it and as you'll see there's just an enormous amount of information I think when we started this kind of them one of the first things we did was pulled a lot of ideas of things that we wanted to do and things about kind of the you know where we grew up and kind of what we wanted to do plot wise with the film and so you know there's just so I think it's interesting that the first page is basically going through the murders over how many different we were straight in there straightening the first thing is crying witness by angel accident fatal accent on the scene by angel disappearance woman wholly accident to Angel witnesses cops laugh it off going straight through the cliches immediately nick is pariah sense of doom it has realization about killers sight against tank danny attempt on his life goes to frank and your gaze at alone uncovers cult at midnight which is presumed dead Jane let's and go angel returns an avenging angel so it was all kind of as the last half a mile right ahead I think things into hey go Sanford yeah yeah we're trying to figure out all the right you know the various profession professions at the village trolley factory that never it's powerful things here yeah the Chinese chip shop that didn't make it over oh yeah we had an idea that they would also be fairly sort of Sano phobic and there wouldn't be you know they get rid of a Chinese chip shop because it wasn't in keeping with yeah chips chips in man Mandarin oil no that's the the Chinese family running the chip shop we're kind of right thrown out on their air well Sanford more stuff approximately five thousand population this is look it geez we procrastinate a lot no it's good we just tried to kind of like I suppose it was like having our own version of SimCity we tried to create our own little world the rose and crash I just lost this jets Barbara's porn what's that I think that's because the James Barr was that I used to go to was where he always used to have like a little um a selection of porn and saw like naughty calendars oh yeah here you go angel flees to London stops the services high noon moment goes back alone that would be like the thing of like you know Gary Cooper going out of town me going I've never run from anything in my life so I like the idea of like Simon's character doing that intestine services is what this is very epilogue Nicolas is the sheriff of Sandford ambiguous fascist nod I saw that was funny that at the end of the film I like the idea that Nicholas angel after being the most liberal cop in the last scene he's got black gloves on and leather bomber jacket you know sort of you know the sunglasses he's turned into the fascist Avenger I was like he's become Charles Bronson in death wish we did want it to be slightly dubious the fact that he was they were so keen to go and pick up some hippie types hey put the brother put accelerator down and go bust the mast it's funny actually looking at this when you look back at the Shaun of the Dead flip chart we really were six years younger because there's all things like Edgar is gay written on it and all bootylicious and things like that this is serious serious pretty much are those interesting I don't think we ever yeah we tried to have it of the NWA was thirteen people so it was like the thirteen and I think that I mean that's probably yeah I think that's probably is thirteen people around that table oh these are things yes is it reasons for punishment these are some of the reasons of what the NWA would kind of punish their sort of people for so he got bad and I'm acting lousy reporting and tigers in the newspaper the Gypsy encampment double parking do-it-yourself pornographer supply flowers to flower rival town that ISM that did have a nose ended up worked why they killed Leslie somebody's Xmas lights up too early making it look like a bordello oh I like that one Connie oh yeah there we go carnage as well as all the people that died in the film you hear of other people that have died that the cops kind of have them you know when they're saying about old people have accidents every day there was a whole thing in the script of them Ben Ben Fletcher fellas pitch robbery that's still in there there's the thing about Gary butcher goes through droughts drowning in a new septic tank and somebody got Ron Spencer hang his cravat caught in the mulcher but we wanted the idea that there was that this was just the tip of the iceberg this happened all the time and people were constantly sort of dying in horrific farming accidents and just assume that nothing was awry look no crime sheet rustling sheet wrestling as a co-host dealer too common but rarely prosecuted undisciplined beekeeping that's a good one and JCB excellent farmer kills wife that happened for real didn't it wasn't it from the papers so this is the this is the convergent in angels theory and what the truth is yeah so yeah so you got here the kind of thing about the castle town planner and then there being terrible actor and annoying wife which is then became kind of Martin Blair and Eve Draper getting ages wrong I think that was a bugbear but like I seem to remember that my mum had once had a the wrong age put in the paper maybe only brought back two years but I think sort of it really bug to any board up this weekend did you know she said to it but pretty over the premier ah Nicholas angel and of course because it's Simon I draw my traditional Pegg widow's peak when I call the back beak this is the character breakdown for Nicholas angel this is all this stuff kind of turns up in the opening montage is bilingual you know speaking to the to the Mandarin couple and the fencing and the the riot training the the NPA the MPAA record all this all this was is the judo we and of course for you but he's frowning even in cars this is the expression Edgar babe we do I think you see that all fellow film foreigner how I do that oh that's interesting there's like a spider-man thing uncle story failed to stop burglar who eventually killed uncle hey is that is the spider spider okay forget that doesn't own TV that was like a little detailer we did it Buddhist oh he only had a whole thing where we thought he should be a Buddhist um which we didn't end up playing in because we didn't want to like try and cover that in such a kind of brief form yeah but I think we spoke to Kevin elder didn't me cuz he is about it yeah so he got some kind of like a Buddhist insight which he then never used nice one there no spectacularly Anil huh the title of our next film okay this whole very dense page I think it's all pretty much pretty much talking about the first scene with those sort of Nicholas angel and his three superiors and there's a lot of things that we had in here which things that you know you can't just disappear people you know that they say the famous thing you know Robert McKee and Syd field always go on about life with Chinatown script saying that you have to set up the main premise of the film in the opening scene and in Chinatown they have that famous line of the star always say you know you've got to be rich to get away with murder and of course that becomes the theme of the film and this one of the themes is is angel saying you can't just make people disappear so that was our idea of like setting up the whole of the kind of the NWA story for later on by mentioning it in the first you know first see oh yeah so this is the this is the montage going into kind of that Sanford the journey he's gone oh yeah that was a joke that we we had this in there but we cut it out but it was just to kind of like too much time spent on it but on the train we had somebody reading Jack's return home in Get Carter you seem for cane reading and farewell my lovely in the first scene and so our idea for a little in joke was to get the the novel on which get Carter is better it's called Jack's return home and have something reading all right the white white heart oh yes one which became the Swan so we got mrs. Cooper the function room here this is that shows how little is in his hotel room yeah we couldn't even fill a page for the hotel room there's another little thing that you might notice sooner than a second or third watches that there's a lot of owls in the film because the neighborhood watch symbol is an owl and there were lots of little there were pictures of it yes owls in lots of hours in the hotel and owls in the am DRAM bar and just the sense of that of being eyes everywhere first night in the Rose and Carla there's a hoodie having a drink though yeah I ended up outside it's funny I it strikes to look back at this point and and see just terrible it was in place before we even started writing the script which we did in this in this row building this is the first night at the front desk you know like handcar set up said gonna rest the whole town are you which is obviously the grocery store angel eventually does kind of arrest the whole town or at least the the sort of luminaries of the time and all this stuff from the first day we really wanted to set up the idea that all of the kind of the villages you see very frequently so it has that slight kind of them you know almost like a sort of a Swiss clock kind of feel to it you know like I sort of like you know have tramps and on camera with green if everybody comes out at the same time and the idea that on the first jog in the morning when Nicholas runs around Sanford you know you see the same people so it kind of looks like in those old TV shows like The Avengers where you'd have the same kind of like extras you know you'd only have you know I like the idea that you know all the people that you meet on the street are all significance to Wilson Timothy Dalton mr. Treacher Lorraine he doesn't meet a single person in the film that doesn't come back later so I was like they're the only ones in the street I just must draw attention to one of the first jokes that had Edgar and I crime which never got into the film was a line from Simon Skinner when Angela said how did you know a policeman and Skinner says your shorts are tight I can see your helmet toodaloo should we work with reworking it for him but because Simon was a sergeant he ended up not wearing a helmet didn't make a lot of sense it wasn't because it was a crass joke it was we was real stickler for detail oh yeah my TV that's right one of there was an idea for a character who was a a yeah an officer called Mike who they called Mike teevee he'd once been on points west doing like a little you know pista camera about an incident and so he'd been on points with the local kind of news for like all the five minutes and become the resident superstar but they called him page white TV and also he'd repeat his own or repeat his quote wouldn't it everything about it the pub lunch Champaign is grave and the moustache joke my star show with it can still listen Nick the Nicholas conspiracy that's his when we rotate what he thinks is going on which is obviously wrong I'm learning through the professor's buttocks lots of arrows okay so this is some kind of crazy flowchart of all the different kind of factors of bizarre family tree of all the different and you know things to do with the conspiracy to do arrows very well always with a film with a section I'm drummer de midst mix action scenes smackdown it's interesting those things that didn't make it letting the finished thing like we had a thing with rugby boys I was gonna be like a team of rugby boys that were bad yeah we've got kind of like the Swan what was the wasp in hostage situation what was that that rings about wasp in a hostage stupid cousin huh I wasn't that angel was allergic to wasps or something oh yeah that was an odd little detail off oh yeah the nwa take it down so we got all other things here of like the different kind of character some of which names changed and how they got quilted into simon school yeah absolutely even hear things like so Terrence Weaver which eventually became like Tom weevils closing the landmines they're impaled on the bottle village the hanging baskets the ramming of the car the overpowering bike kids a lot of things very similar Oh necklace Victoria that went we're going gone beyond irrelevant never happened shooter and Sanford the porters fight in the bar a net Roper first of all window all this was Michael Meza who was that something he was the cycling proficiency yeah making everything so still to do that is hard to do list and it's amazing to know that this is probably normal stuff but the second of two flip charts because I remember the first one had loads trouble and here a lot of index cards with loads of stuff on if you go through this you can kind of see the entire the entire film in flip chart form this is now in the 21st century is now how they're going to release some films on the internet just like that so you can actually saw just download index cards and then people don't actually have to make the thing so you see by the time we actually got here to Wells to write the film we had all of this ready to go so when we say we wrote it here it's true in terms of the the first version of the screenplay but this is what we kind of kind of had as our arsenal of ideas you
