[Music] all right well I'm really fortunate to be with Marcus Muller today he is the founder and I guess presidents right of II calc and also evey calc which are two really cool sites and I want to get into what they do so first you started I think with a calc tell me what that site is what it does yeah II calc was found back in 2004 a friend of mine came to me and asked me if there is a possibility to calculation electric propulsion for RC models of remote-controlled models mainly in the aviation part of the Hobby and yeah that's how it started so so you mean like if I want to design my own let's say RC helicopter I need to figure out you know the weight of my batteries how much power they put out how much power the the bat you know the motor puts out and that those are pretty complicated calculations that I might not be able to do myself yes it's correct so you basically you just have a battery you have a motor you have a propeller or rotor depending on the type of airplane or helicopter and now you want to know what is the performance of the vehicle and what current may I have to expect how long is the flight time and so on awesome so I go to your website and let's let's be clear what this website is because it might be hard for some people to find if they don't type it incorrectly it's a calc dot CH because you are in this looks like it's uh basically for all different types of things helicopters airplanes whatever yeah so we do calculators for fixed-wing airplanes for helicopters for multirotors and for electric chats that's great and now that has led you to another site that you started called evey calc I bought my first Tesla three years ago and Stan our household joined the BMW i3 and thus the BM w i3 is not as much sophisticated and the Tesla you never know when you will end up with the battery especially when you visit the mountains here in the in Switzerland I was just curious can I do a trade ending up in the mountain and and what state of charge I will have and couldn't find anything about such calculations and so I go to evey calc and I put in my - you know my trip points where I'm from and where I'm going and then this will calculate things like what is it take into account so it takes into account the route you are entering because basically it's a map application so you can define your starting point your ending point what car you will use some environmental data you can choose temperature road conditions and so on and then you will find if you can make it how long it takes how many time you have to recharge and so on now you have a database of cars in your program that is quite amazing it seems to be every electric vehicle I've ever heard of and you seem to have pretty good data on even ones that haven't come out yet yeah I hope to cover the entire range of electric vehicles having this database is quite amazing because I don't think a lot of people realize this but if they're thinking of buying an electric car and they're kind of between two or three choices they could go to your site and kind of check out the comparison of of these different electric vehicles because you've got the data yes correct so it's not only for evey owners but also for somebody who thinks about changing to EVs and then you can check if the EB you have here in your in your mind will fit your needs so yeah now how many people are using your EB calculator that you know on a normal day it's about 400 visits I have laughs there is something special then it goes up the maximum was about eight thousand you are basically paying for that you have to have the servers and the in the computers to handle that and I this is I think of a free service right I mean people can just go there and and not have to pay to use it but should they can people donate to you to help offset your costs yeah I basically want to keep it free of charge so to reach as many people as possible to also accelerate the transition to sustainable transportation so that's my big goal to keep it free of charge but however as you mentioned there are server costs there are other costs and they are always happy to to get some donation or become just a patron for one dollar so that is also a lot so you set up a tree on page not the same as now you know it's it's just a repetitive payment of one dollar a month okay so yeah people if you go to the site and you use it donate some money tell me a little bit for going back to your ikaw site you've done some more things with with calculating for things like airplanes and stuff like that you're now getting into actually making some products can you tell me about that I am a partner of a another company called Leah motion we are doing electric motors for the RC community yeah we I can show you some example so this is an electric motor basically you have the housing with the stator in it and here is the gear gearing planetary gear now when it's open oh cool you see it yeah so here you can see the stator with the copper windings here is the router itself it's from the US the stator is from Mexico rotaries from the united states with some reinforced carbon here to make sure the magnet stays in place even on high rpms and here we has two we have the bulb bearing they are from Japan and the planetary gear is our frontier it's from Germany Wow so you basically source parts from all over the world that fit your needs for the motors you're making and then you put them together now why not just buy a motor from China because of the efficiency itself so doing an electric motor is not very complicated but doing an efficient motor that is not easy especially when we have a look on the on the stator so the feeling great of the copper here in the stator that's the the key point of being very efficient on the electric motor side now when someone gets started in this is it best to just start with a premade say airplane or helicopter or maybe a kit so they're basically there are kits for the airplane itself so they are called a or F kits so almost ready to fly you just put into the propulsion and RC stuff and off you go so basically it takes about five hours to build an airplane like this but to get optimized drive for the airplane it's not that easy for a newbie I would say so I take it's going some attract us and yeah I don't know it takes some practice or then you just go through the different forums and check what what's the best propulsion for my specific airplane and you must be in touch with a lot of people in the RC world but also a lot of people in the evey world because you've got both of these passions what's that been like in the past few years as more and more people have been doing kind of both both Electric RC and electric Eevee so the electric or C started around millennium so about 2000 and was growing very fast and and now I when I'm on the RC Airport now there are only a few gasoline powered craft most of them are now electric the battery technology improved a lot that that was the main the main breakthrough for the electric or C community so when you were first doing this it was almost all gasoline engines right so before 2000 machina who are using getting all gasp and and then you've seen this transition right over time to to electric do you think that that's a similar transition that we're gonna see to electric vehicles I think there are a lot of similarities yeah I think it will accelerate over the next year's even and I hope I really hope that we get to sustainable transportation soon because that's that's one of the main thing to to contract the climate crisis shall we do a demonstration of EB Cal come yeah that'll be great so first we go to a Cal points eh as you see here then here are the RC calculators and industrial calculator as you mentioned before and on the right hand side you have to EB calc okay we click you click on that so basically it takes the language of your computer so mine is German of course I have it in German and English for the time it's just acknowledged statement for using and then here we are so first if your browser is able to to have a localization inside so we can check your GPS coordination coordinates and you will see a I accept this here is the the car so that's my present position you have in the upper left corner you have for help so there is a lot of information about entry fields and some tips when buying an e V and so on so basically what I do first is I design my route I would like to do today I thought we drive from unique by clicking the enter is looking for this place if there is any place so here we start and we gonna go up to Hamburg so on the German Autobahn is always fun and the route designer in now route your routine and the numbers here you'll see these are charge stations and root of it's basically the first thing you do you can choose the road condition if it's fried am but if you have snow on it and so on and temperature now is pretty high 32 degrees here what charger you like to see n route so we take a Tesla of course so we we only want to see churches with on the kilowatts or more and in within what range of my route so not 20 miles of route dozen glasses to visit Georgia so they will take five kilometres but they're basically that's it second you can do is choose your car so we take a Tesla Model 3 depend on the right side comes up the picture of the car you can also choose a car on our electric vehicle overview so you here you see all cars we have in in the database oh that's so cool and this would be a perfect way to check out you know if you were thinking of buying a different model to see how it would do on this really don't we take this one and then he takes over the car here okay then you fill out some other stuff like accessory consumption so that's basically the climate control radio and so on so leave it normally to normal okay the BMS the battery monitoring system if if he has to eat up the battery in summer time it's normally off in winter time you can choose here and not a level okay if you have if you have already in a battery degradation you can enter here like five percent I have two battery degradation of five percent the payload include including the passenger so today we or maybe two guys doing the trip by entities and you always can enter it either in metrics or in imperial units the tires if your your car is wearing summer tires over the tires or winter tires and what pressure you normally use next you define your charge strategy so you we start now with the Honda percent here we will end up at the destination is 10% we start recharging 10% as well and we only charge to 70% so again we gain time because of the 50% model three drops the max power then what what a charge power do I accept expect it's normally under in ten kilowatts I would say and how long it takes to connect your car to the charging station so drive off the highway connect and drive to the highway again so then that helps to calculate entire trip time then we do the calculation takes about a second and a large hat then we have here the results table and I love this table because when you first glance at it you might be a little overwhelmed but if you I think you're gonna show us there's some really cool data you can pull out of this yeah that's that's for sure yeah so the the table is organized by constant speed here on the left so the if the speed increases up to maximum speed of your car that is in the database then the second column is the drag resistance so that's the drag resulting from air for assistance so basically if you increase the speed the drag will increase by a power of two so not not linear it increases expand exponentially mhm and the next one is roller assistance that's basically what tire are using what Street condition you have what weight the car has in total that is the main driver for roller resistance potential energy so if you end up in the mountain you will have a minus if you end up somewhere much lower then you start and you have a positive potential energy the accessory you have chosen that gives you a total energy you need to drive from A to B so this energy might be higher than your battery energy of course ah hello you know you need some recharging yep then the app will calculate how much you have to recharge and how long it takes 39 minutes here in this case and we have to recharge at least twice so then if this gives you a travel time of about 7 hours 25 minutes average consumption of 77 point 17 point one kilowatt per hundred kilometers and a specific range of your car of 417 kilometres so what's really cool here is that you can look at this chart and you can kind of it's a very good learning experience because you can see that you would think like oh if I just go faster I'll get there faster but no you won't because at a certain point like as we can see here on the chart let's see if I go yeah I go 200 kilometers an hour it'll actually take me longer to get there than if I go 180 kilometers an hour yes this is correct because you have to you because you need more recharging yeah but right somewhere you have a sweet spot this sweet spot is defined by the maximum recharge power and the higher the recharging power is the higher the optimum speed for the lowest travel time will be so here in the model tree it's here somewhere around 160 280 kilometres an hour but it's quite fast most country you cannot take advantage of this right but in Germany it will be possible so 880 kilometres an hour we would have to lowest travel time here even though we have to recharge five times right and so you can decide you know whether you'd like to only charge let's say three times which going 140 kilometers an hour or whether you want to get there you know 40 minutes faster it's really cool and then you've got this really cool chart below this can you talk to me about that your inch marking chart maybe first we can come when you choose here a line mm-hm so I I wanna go hundred and let's say 100 and third forty huh okay then you go up to the map then you have you can see the best places to recharge the Optima optimum place to recharge this or these green circles so here just before the green circle we have here at Tesla supercharger and then you get here the information you can even the route wire the charger if you like or you will see on here is a ayala t charger maybe you want to use this one yeah so then you just get an overview at which position i have to expect the recharge gotcha and yes if you're choosing here aligned as well then we come to the benchmark table here down here this chart represents the same route on the same speed with a function that the car will charge on the average of eighty percent of your maximum charging capability and this is so cool because now we can see you know other comparable EVs and see you know with all their different stats like how much total energy they would use or how much time it would take to travel with them and that way you can kind of pick a car that works best for what you know the kind of driving you want to do and as we can see here the model 3 does really well it's a super efficient car that's so great thank you so much Marcus for sharing this with us today I really urge people to go check this
