[Music] [Applause] life and as you speak is [Applause] hi my name is nicola holmes and last year i was a part of the ebr gospel choir well i never actually had a chance to be a part of the choir and everybody knows i love gospel music so much and i felt as if it would be a good part of my high school experience to try and be in it my teacher told me that this would be a good experience for all of us he understands that some of us couldn't make it some of us could make it to the practices but if you could it would be a great opportunity for you to try well my experience i can say i made a lot of new friends some from tara some people that i knew from my middle school um it was it was great it wasn't a really it wasn't really a lot of extraness going on it was just what it needed to be my mother raised me up in the church and i i just get this feeling when gospel music comes on i gotta a praise them you know what i'm saying um that my god is good that's that's the feeling i get my god is good a lot of stuff during black history and um excuse me the slaves you know they the way they made it through the day they sung hymns they they did their work songs and you know some of the black artists they use gospel beats right right as we speak some of them use gospel beats to you know make their songs it was amazing clap your hands [Music] i [Music] [Music] i'm sarah mcgibbony and i teach at wedgwood elementary school when i first heard that our district was offering gospel choir to elementary students um the fifth graders at my school would be able to participate and i was ecstatic that they would be able to be a part of such a diverse group of of people coming together all different age groups singing music in harmony that they don't get to sing um with other students in our elementary school so it was a really big draw for me to be able to include some of the kids at my [Applause] school [Applause] [Music] [Music] oh [Applause] [Music] i feel that um being a part of this actually allowed my students to see a different aspect of performing period because um there were not only high school students there but middle school and elementary school students too and a lot of those students haven't shared the stage with students that were of different ages different ethnic backgrounds different walks of life and so they're kind of used to being with who they're used to being with and some of my students uh i had they had to sing around other people that they're not used to singing around so that encouraged them to hey now i have to use my ears because i'm not sitting by whoever and i gotta hold my own part down and i'm not being surrounded by the people i'm used to so um it was enlightening for a lot of them very much so enlightened [Music] [Music] [Applause] when i think about me like coming from a musician's point of view and i'm a musician as well whenever i perform gospel music most times it's more challenging than other other music that we've played or that i've played before but when i think of the intricacies and the melodies you know the the challenge and things that we play or or even that we sing a lot of times what you're hearing and what what we're playing is the story is the story of black history if you listen to it a lot of times you can hear tension you can hear release you can hear dissonance you can hear the struggle you can also hear you can also hear you hear praise you can hear worship you can hear triumph so everything that we're hearing in gospel music in my opinion is black history because what you're hearing is the experience that we are that many of us have lived [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so initially when i heard that mr joe freon was putting together a district mass choir i thought that this undertaking was too large for someone who was just starting in this position he had been in the position not even a year and he knew that this was something that he wanted to do he put a proposal together and he made this come to life when i attended the event it was far less than stellar it was perfect not only were the songs appropriate for students and teachers but it was great for the audience and it was at the perfect time when we had many divisions within our community he was able to bring us all together through song he gives me oh [Music] yes
