today I'm sharing four thrifted lamps that we're going to take from drab and out of date make them over with simple techniques that anyone can do turning them into high-end beautiful home decor in this thrifted lamp DIY [Music] video hello there everyone and welcome to today's video where we are going to take thrifted lamps make them over with some simple DIYs and turn them into fabulous new lamps for our home the thrift store is a great place to find vintage lamps lamp parts and anything you could imagine to make over a lamp into something beautiful I also like to find lamps from garage sales and yard sales not only are new lamps so expensive but when you Thrift in DIY your lamps you can create something special and unique for your home and that gives it a warm cozy lived in feel our first thrifted lamp DIY makeover is on this $2 garage sale find I am so excited about this I've been seeing ceramic floral lamps in stores with high price tags and because I like to know as much about my pieces that I Thrift as possible I looked this up and it is a vintage lamp it has seen better days and is quite Dusty from sitting in this lady's Attic So we are going to give it a little makeover and you will not believe how beautiful it is when we're done this first step is to clean the lamp and there is just no other way to get down in all of those crevices of the flowers except to get it wet as long as you keep any water out of the light socket and out of the cord you will be fine as you can see here I have it tilted over my kitchen sink using a cleaning brush that has antibacterial Dawn dish soap in it and I'm just very carefully and very gently scrubbing all the flowers on this lamp when I'm done I make sure to dry it off and remove any of that loose paint mine just slued off and came off very easily you can scuff sand any loose paint or blemishes on your lamp as well once your lamp is clean and completely dry use painters tape to mask off anything that you do not want paint on on this particular DIY we will be using spray paint so you want to make sure that lat bulb socket and the cord are also covered so they don't get any overspray on them I do this by using a sandwich bag and then taping it down my lamp is prepped and ready to spray paint here is my inspiration for my paint of choice I have seen these in and around online and in stores so I chose this rustolium paint and primer in gloss white I want that high shine ceramic finish on my lamp I also love this Rustoleum paint and primer because then it is all inone I don't have to do any other prep to my lamp before I start spraying it on I am doing three very light coats I will spray it once very lightly and let that dry and then repeat that process this is going to get in all of those cracks and crevices of the flowers it's also going to ensure that I don't get any drips and runs and that I get a good even coverage once my lamp is completely dry we can add a lamp shade and I found the perfect one at Lowe's I went with this navy blue lamp shade not only is it stunning with that white floral base but it will be perfect in my office that I'm slowly and methodically curating [Music] I found this broken and sad lamp at Goodwill for $7.99 our second thrifted DIY lamp makeover is going to be to turn this boring Goodwill find into a high-end Pottery lamp that is stunning and beautiful you can see by this original tag this lamp came from Kirkland's Back in the Day always make sure that the lamp Works before you start working on it don't want to put all that effort into a lamp that does not work thrifted lamps can be grimy and dirty so we're going to use a Degreaser and wipe it down make sure it is very clean before we get started although this lamp was nothing special to look at I was drawn to the shape of it I knew that this would be the perfect silhouette to create that pottery look to the lamp the next thing I want to do is to use a sanding block and scuff sand the surface of the lamp this is going to help our primer and paint adhere and be less likely to come off once you have it scuff sanded you will want to take a damp cloth and WP it down making sure you let it dry completely before we move on to the next step to Prime my lamp I'm using this folk art clear primer it was very windy on this day so I could not take my lamp outside and spray it with a spray primer or paint so we are going to do it inside you just brush on this primer it's waterbased it does not have an odor it works wonderful I have used it in the past and had good results with it you you can see that the primer goes on in the consistency and color of like Elmer's glue but it dries clear you can use this primer on all different surfaces to prep it for paint in order to achieve a pottery look and texture to our lamp we are going to mix baking soda with our black acrylic paint you could choose any paint color you like but I am going for a dark mood color on this lamp and have seen similar high-end versions on the internet for hundreds of dollars so I'm going to mimic that here your paint and baking soda mixture will be thick and that is what you want you want it to have that texture to it and you want it to have variations of thick and thin areas as you crosshatch paint it onto your lamp base or vessel I promise you this is so easy you cannot mess it up it is just paint you can always fix paint so don't be afraid to get in there and just start painting your lamp maybe you have a lamp around your home that you can upcycle and makeover you wouldn't even have to Thrift anything if you cross-hatch your paint thick enough you should only need one coat you can see all of that texture and variation that it creates by adding that Bak Bing soda to your paint I let my paint dry overnight and you can still see all of that texture here but we are not done we want to give some Dimension to that texture so I am using this quick set concrete mix you can also use regular flour like cooking flour but I did not want the white undertones I wanted this gray ashy look to my Pottery lamp base so I had the concrete mix on hand and decided to give it a try using a dry painters brush I am gently brushing that dry concrete mix onto my lamp base there again is no right or wrong weight of this you can use a little you can use a lot I combined those two together to give it depth and dimension where some places would have more of the concrete mix other places would have less less and you can just keep brushing at it if you get too much and remove some of it or add more onto your piece if you want it to be a little heavier or thicker it is this concrete mix that is giving it that aged pottery look though and elevating it to a high-end piece I waited for a day that was only slightly windy I covered up all of the parts of my lamp that I did not want to get overspray on I'm using this Rustoleum matte clear coat to seal that concrete mix in this is a piece that you definitely want to seal because that powder will wear off as you dust and clean your lamp I am just spraying it with a very light coat that's all it needs if you get too heavy-handed with your clear coat then you will dampen down that concrete mix and have to repeat the process so just light-handed and here is what it looks like out in the sunshine after I have completed that full coat of matte clear sealant you can absolutely repurpose the lamp shade that you might already have on hand but I found this fabric pleated shade at allies for $7.99 it looks beautiful and fits perfectly on my lamp [Music] our third DIY is this mini Goodwill lamp I found for $4.99 and we are literally going to Pepper it with texture turning this plain beige lamp into a fabulous high-end inspired home decor piece you always want to clean your lamp good before you start I'm once again using my method Degreaser to do this just wiping it on and then letting it dry before taking a sanding block and lightly scuff sanding the surface so that primer and paint adhere to it and won't come off after giving it that light sanding take a damp cloth wipe it off and let it dry thoroughly before applying your primer I'm once again using this folk art clear primer it goes on thick and opaque but D clear you will only need to apply one coat of primer it self levels so you don't have to worry about brush strokes and there's no need to sand it before you paint make sure you let it dry completely before you start your painting process I am using Deco art all-in-one enamel eggshell finish paint in the color cream puff we are literally mixing our paint with black pepper and baking soda from our kitchen pantry to give our DIY a nice rich texture there is no recipe per se of how much black pepper or baking soda you add to your paint you just keep eyeballing it the more pepper will give you a thicker texture so it is up to your personal preference if you want a heavy or a lighter texture the baking soda is added in just to give it that element of a pottery piece and just enhances and thickens the base of the paint again it is all personal preference and I have used this technique with the pepper only and not added the baking soda and I like the way that looks as well so play around with it until you get the desired effect that you're going for I once again just thickly paint on my mixture with a 1 in paintbrush using a cross hatch method I don't want it to be uniform I want it to have that handmade pottery look to it when we're done I have shared a lamp previously that I've done this on in my decorating and y'all love the idea that you can get a thick Rich texture from black pepper you could use all of these DIY makeover methods on bowls vases or other decorative items they are not exclusive only to Lamps so going forward you can make over thrifted items or upcycle Decor pieces that you're kind of tired of in your own home turning them into new and exciting highend and inspired home decor you will want to make sure your lamp base is completely dry before we use our next Pantry item to add aging to our lamp and we are going after the cinnamon this time cinnamon is going to be the perfect color to age this cream colored base it is also going to smell fabulous I'm using my dry waxing brush to apply the ground cinnamon to my lamp base this is going to pick up the texture and highlight that pepper that we put in our paint you can go again as heavy or as light I started a little bit lighter and then I kept adding and building on the color of the cinnamon you'll want to be careful not to rub places that you really like too much because you can remove some of that cinnamon if you're not careful but you can always add it back this is full proof If you don't like the way it looks then just take a damp cloth and wipe off the cinnamon you can start over or completely eliminate the cinnamon step if that is not the look that you're going for you can see here how that cinnamon just accentuates the texture of the lamp base as well as aging it and gives it some more depth and dimension to an otherwise plain lamp you will definitely want to seal your lamp with this matte clear spray sealer from rum just lightly spray it over your lamp base I did two coats of sealant on this to make sure the cinnamon did not come off as I was cleaning my lamp and moving it around my home I am so pleased with how this $4.99 Cent lamp base turned out now I just need the perfect lamp shade I found it at Walmart I will link everything I can for you down in the description [Music] [Music] box our fourth DIY lamp makeover is so easy I found this chinoiserie lamp at a garage sale for $10 it was fabulous just like it was except for the gold base had a lot of wear on it it did not look very good it was scuffed up and tarnished we are going to remedy that today and we're going to do it in a very quick and easy way that anybody can use to refresh a lamp we are going to start by first cleaning it really good getting off any Grime and then to fix that base I am using this Deco art metallic luster paste I have not worked with this before I have used rubb and buff I really like this paste you can put it as thin or as thick as you want after starting this process I decided that I wanted to add some texture to this base I did not want to leave it smooth per the directions you apply this paste let it dry 24 hours and then you buff it to a lustery shine but we are nothing if not unique around here so we are going to make up our own rules and use this product to create a nice golden texture to our lamp base in order to get some texture down here and cover up a few of those imperfections I am applying it very thickly after several coats of just layering on that paste here is what it looks like you can see the rich gold color along with that slightly rustic texture I love the way that blends with the chinoiserie since I didn't buff and shine that gold luster I need to seal it and protect it I am using this high gloss varnish that I pick up at Hobby Lobby you will want to make sure that your gold luster paste has dried completely before you apply your varnish it is water base you just brush it on with a paintbrush let it dry and repeat if you feel it's necessary for multiple coats I did one coat on my lamp and it has held up and protected that gold luster perfectly I found this pleated mini lampshade at Target for $10 by the brand threshold it was the perfect size for my shinery DIY lamp makeover paired together they are a perfect match let me know what you think down in the comments about today's thrifted lamp DIY makeovers I'm so glad that you spent your time here with me today I hope you found this inspiring and
