[Music] hey guys and welcome back to my channel I have a super fun tutorial for you today I have been wanting to make my own ironing board for a couple of years now and ever since I started quilting I needed something a little bit bigger that I could press like a whole quilt top on but then I can also kind of use as a work surface as well and so today is finally the day I had a friend of mine cut a piece of plywood that's exactly the same size that I need it to be and I'm going to show you how I'm gonna cover it and turn it into an ironing board so we only need a couple of supplies for this and really I'm not going to give you exact measurements this time I don't think because you can literally make this any size you want you can cut your more to be smaller larger I've also seen people use the backsides of wooden puzzles from their kids just pull out the puzzle pieces flip it over so you're putting your batting on to the smooth side and so they have like kind of little mini travel ones I've seen people do this with the folding TV trays that you use to sit you know in front of your chair to like eat dinner on while you're watching TV you can really use just about anything you want for this project all you need are a few basic supplies and then you can totally customize it to fit your needs so first off what you're going to need is some kind of staple gun and the only thing I have to say about the staple gun I'm using kind of a heavy-duty one here this is my husband's and the staples are a little bit they run a little bit deeper you're going to want to make sure that your staples aren't the prongs on your staples aren't deeper than the piece of wood that you're using that's my only tip there obviously if you use staples that are too long it's going to poke out the other side and you're gonna end up like you know having pokies coming up through your ironing board nobody wants that the other thing you'll need is some fabric and I just chose this pretty blue fabric it's pretty neutral and I think it'll match my room well and you're going to need some cotton batting and this part is kind of important you do want your batting to be a hundred percent cotton you don't want to use polyester batting because when the heat hits it it can melt and shrivel and do all kinds of nasty things so 100% cotton I think you can also use bamboo but you might want to test that out before you take my word on it and then your need gonna need some kind of a piece of wood now I'm not going to hold my nut because it's actually quite large I'm gonna put it where I showed you earlier it's on top of my 2x4 IKEA shelving unit and I'm just going to cover that entire thing with my ironing board that way if I need to set things on it I can but if I need to move stuff off and use it to iron a larger project I can do that as well and like I said you can make this any size you want so let's go ahead and get started okay now I just want to kind of show you the first thing I did was cut my fabric and I left about three inches my fabric about three inches larger than my board on all four sides and I'll kind of show you that when I get my board on here but first I just wanted to show you I went ahead and trimmed my fabric so it's about an inch or so bigger than my batting on all four sides so my project is kind of large you can't see it all on the screen here but on all four sides of my batting there is about an inch overlay and that way when you pull it around you just don't have your batting sticking out so it doesn't have to be perfect this project is super forgiving I didn't even really honestly I didn't even measure this I just kind of make sure this was big enough and then just trimmed around the edges so that my fabric was a little bit larger so that's what the first step is the next step is to just lay down your fabric face down on your work surface so that it just looks like this this is the wrong side right side so we're just laying that fabric down and smoothing it out and then make sure to lay your batting layers down and smooth those out and I have two layers of batting here now if you're using um you know real this is actually fairly thin this is warm and white cotton 100% cotton batting and I will try and put a link for it below but it is quite thin so I'm using two layers I could maybe even use three but just feeling this this feels fine to me if you're using a lot of your bed and you might want to use only one layer like I mentioned before you don't want it to be super squishy because when you're pressing your for quilting anyways you want a nice hard surface so that you can get really crisp seams so I think two layers of batting are totally fine but you do whatever you think feels best for you know whatever surface you're using so I'm gonna lay that down the next thing I'm going to do is put my board on top of here and then you'll be able to kind of see how much extra I give for that okay so I put my board on here and this was all nice and standard for me from a friend of mine but you don't really have to do that if you don't want to you can just use this is just plywood so you can use the particle board or anything like that and so I've laid that down and I've just tried to measure I kind of just eyeballed it but just to measure that it's about equal distance on all four sides and you can't see my other side down there because the same project is really big but you can at least see this side and then the next thing that we're gonna want to do is just make sure there's no crinkles underneath here because if you have any wrinkles in your fabric then you'll end up with a wrinkle in your ironing board and obviously don't want that happen so just make sure everything's nice and smooth before you get started but the rest of the project is super easy we're just going to grab our staple gun here yeah let me just get my safety off okay so the first thing that we're going to do is pull up all four corners and staple those on and then when we're done we're gonna come back around and kind of fold up the sides and staple those so if you have a lot of bulk if you feel like you have a lot of bulk in this corner I'm two layers of batting shouldn't be too bad but if yours is really bulky you can also kind of trim out some of the batting right here so it's just fabric so it lays a little bit smoother I'm personally just going to go ahead and leave it like it is I don't mind having kind of a cushioned corner right here that way if I happen to run into it right no big deal so anyways I'm gonna go ahead and do that and we're just going to go ahead and staple down the corners and I like to staple the batting first and then staple the fabric on top all right so there's one and then I'm actually just going to grab my fabric and staple that now if you have any like this one I wasn't pushing her enough down you can take a hammer and just hammer that in and you probably will want to do that so it doesn't scrape whatever surface you lay on you're laying your table on Benes we're gonna do the other four corners same exact way and then I'll show you how to do the size [Music] okay now that we've done the four corners all we have to do and I just kind of like you're wrapping a present I just kind of push that in right there and grab it and pull it around the top and you'll end up with this little crease right here if that if you have cut it too wide and you've got quite a bit like what I have I think I'll probably trim this just slightly so it doesn't overlap as much but honestly this is going to be on the underneath side and it doesn't really matter and then we're going to go ahead and just do this all the way down the long sides and the other short side and we're basically done [Music] okay now for the longer sides I realize you can't see my edges over there but I am about in the middle right here and I'm going to actually staple up the centers first and then the far corner and then I'll kind of do one in the middle and then one in the middle of each of those so you're basically kind of going here's an end middle and and then placing them in between just to kind of help so you don't end up with like if you start at one end and start pushing fabric this way it'll kind of can pucker on one of the ends so always start in the middle if you have a longer surface like I do and then work your way out like that alright and with my camera so here is my original here's my Center and then here's the edge of one and I'm just doing the same thing I did before where I'm kind of tucking it in like a present and folding it up alright and then I've got that one so now I'm gonna go somewhere here in the middle of those and then we'll probably put one here and one there and then that way I don't have any puckering and then I'm just gonna do that on the other side as well and then we'll be done [Music] okay so our board should be looking somewhat like this the edges don't have to be your perfect or anything because that's just going down I did take a small little hammer here and just hammer in a couple of these that I didn't get in all the way just from you know I just wasn't pushing hard enough for my staple gun and everything is good and bam we are all done we now have a lovely ironing surface that we can put anywhere like I said you can make these any size you want you can make smalls travel ones to stick in your sewing bag or you can make a nice big one like I have here and put it on to your you know shelving unit or even your work table and that'll turn you know any work surface into an ironing board alright guys so that is my ironing board tutorial I hope that you guys enjoyed it as you can see it is super easy you can literally use any fabric that you want to kind of you know spruce up your sewing area you can cut your piece of plywood or whatever kind of wood you're using on literally any size that you want you can really customize it to fit your needs and I have seen people cover entire you know like work surfaces down to teeny tiny ones that you can kind of just stick in your bag and maybe take two retreats so these are really fun and easy to make and I hope you enjoyed this tutorial if you have any suggestions maybe that I didn't mention below you're welcome to leave a comment or any questions like that and I'll do my best to get back to you but in any case I hope you enjoyed today's tutorial and this video thank you so much for joining me and I will see you next time [Music]
